I snagged this from another forum and thought id toss it in here as well
I like the idea of a forum where everyone has the SAME basic vehicle and this will give everyone ideas on upgrades.
Rules:
doesnt have to be something YOU did but it does have to be done to YOUR jeep
meaning for instance I took jeep to shop and had new gears installed/
doesnt have to be TODAY but in recent past
no limit to how many posts and upgrades

I'll start
for instance if you did nothing on it for a specific reason post that
Today I took kids to school and picked them up too cold to work on it today

You can post pics as well I guess

Good Idea on the thread

Well today I cursed at it cuz I'm trying to replace my leafsprings and one of the weld nuts broke and another is stuck on the bushing.

Then I said sorry and that I didn't mean it

Well I spent 30 minutes getting my drivers door to unlock, didn't feel the need to have to start crawling in and out of the passanger side. I also started the hunt as to where my leak is that is causing the carpet in the back to become soaked every time it rains, no luck there yet though.

My carpet in the back gets wet as well.... or did.... check your weather stripping around the hatch, and then along the top of the hatch opening there is a built in little trough to redirect water out and down the sides, if there are any leaves or straw or anything like that in there it will cause it to leak.

FYI I thought I had the same issue even had a mechanic tell me that it was coming from the oil dipstick but come to find out it was actually the fuel pressure sensor whihc is just below the dipstick and it was spraying up to the basic area of the dipstick... my two cents the sensor was cheap like 15 bucks or so. like 5 minutes of work fixed a three month headache

it was 18 degrees where I live but still when it's -2 you dont wanna work on the jeep do ya?
anyhow today I had the wifey ask if she could take the coveted XJ to work cause of the snow an whopping 4 inches and I will say its dangerous for texans to drive in the snow cause TX DOT doesnt take the neccesary measures to ensure safety on the roads for motorists like sanding in a timely manner they wait til the snow is THERE THEN they hit the roads...idiots anyhow I opted to get my butt out of bed and drive her myself as I wanted a day to play in the snow before we move to houston where they dont get snow but once every few years.
Ill post pics of the snow and my jeep later.

FYI just cause your area has lots of snow doesnt mean its always SOO much colder
I lived in tahoe area for years but It STILL gets colder here before snow sticks I guess it has to do with the lattitude cause tahoe is closer to the beach than dallas is by about two hours
AND also TRUST me I have seen cold try going through basic training in new jersey during a blizzard we had wind chills at 40 below... that means I was able to SPIT and it froze and bounced on the ground...

I've noticed on my thermometer that if I am traveling at highway speeds it shows the correct temp, but just sitting there at an idle it will climb, and yes in the summer sitting at an idle I have seen mine reach 122 when its really only around 95-100 outside.

I have also seen mine reach -29

I had to repair a water leak on my XJ this morning at the top radiator hose easy job! just stuffed a old towel up under the hose where it slip's over the thermo housing to catch the water and slipped it off. Well my RF insulator came in Wednesday. I held off until today to install it. Basically it just puts a lot of insulator between the metal of the Jeep (the ground) and the antenna. Apparently at 100 watts you can generate 10,000 volts of electricty near the antenna and the body. 10kv will arc over, as in a mini lightening bolt causing all kinds of issues.

Well it's installed, and I even added a loading coil but I'm still having issues with RF getting into the Jeep. Some bands it actually shuts down the engine! :shocker:

So it looks like I'll be learning more about RF grounding, or bonding of the body parts together. I think I started having issues when I raised the Jeep body 7" higher from the ground. It seems that the RF ground is actually capacitly coupled to the ground from the bottom of the body. Increasing the distance to the ground changes the capacitance value and the ground.

After working on the antenna I made one call on 20 meters, and someone in Missouri came back to me. We spoke for 10 or 15 minutes. He was asking me about San Antonio. Apparently he is in a Corvette group that will be driving down to Texas in March. I told him about the River Walk in San Antonio. Very nice place.

Anyway looks like I can talk on 80,40,20 and 10 meters now. So that means I just need to get 17,12,18, and 6 meters working. lol Actually 40,20,12 and 6 would be fine, but hell at this point I'm just going to fix them all! :smiley-laughing021:

Well I finally replaced the front Rough Country shocks with some that I bought from Ron at store.4wheelingplus.com (http://store.4wheelingplus.com/)last July! :rotfl2:

They are the Rough Country Nitro 9000 series shock.

:link: (http://store.4wheelingplus.com/proddetail.asp?prod=9000&cat=85) http://store.4wheelingplus.com/images/8100-shock.jpg (http://store.4wheelingplus.com/proddetail.asp?prod=9000&cat=85)

The Rough Country Nitro 9000 series shock absorbers incorporate self adjusting "Velocity Sensitive Valving". This revolutionary technology varies the resistance valving incorporated in the shock according to piston rod speed. This allows for a super smooth highway ride and outstanding control in rugged off road situations from the same shock, without turning any knobs or shock removal for re-adjustment

Specifications:
Performance Proven 10-Stage Variable Valving
200 psi Nitrogen Charged
Massive 1 3/8" Bore
Chromed Hardened 9/16" Piston Rod
Spring Loaded Piston Rod Seal
Military Spec. Fluid Rated To -50 degrees C
Limited Lifetime Warranty
White powder coat finish
Smooth Highway Ride/Firm Off-Road
Choice of boot w/stainless clamp
Poly-urethane bushings for long life

I was having some cupping issues with the front BFG MTs. That has gone away since, but someone recommended a heavier duty shock to keep the tires from bouncing so I ordered these.

Mounted my axe and bfh on the side walls in the cargo area, moved the first aid kit and mounted it in a different spot. Put in new headlights, nothing special just oem replacements. Now I'm thinking about converting to round headlights.

I did 3 radiator flushes. I did this by means of the lower radiator hose. I replaced the hoses with new ones from NAPA( approx $32.50 for the two hoses). the lower hose did not come with a spring in it. I found a couple in my misc parts drawer and put them in the hose. I also picked up my 30 oil filters from NAPA (by way of their promotion). the 1085 were $3.53 apiece and the 1515 were $3.27 each.

Here recently the old 4.0 hasn't been starting on the first crank. Second crank no problem. It's probably the fuel filter or leaky injector, but I had a coil that's been sitting around my garage for the better part of a year, so I decided to change it out just to see.

As you may recall my engine is running (according to OBDII data I collected) a little rich, and my gas mileage is in the 13-ish range. As low as the high 12's and as high as the high 13s. It's possible, but unlikely, that a poor spark may be contributing to poor fuel burn.

I may have a line on some different (not new/rebuilt) injectors. If they are as easy to change as I think the appear to be, I'll swap them in and recollect the O2 sensor data to see if my air/fuel mixture drops to where it should be.

If it does I may order those 4 hole flow/spray matched injectors I've been wanting for some time.

BTW, if you've never changed a coil on a 98 XJ, don't bother with the two small bolts that attach the coil to the bracket. Take the bracket off that attaches to the block. There are nuts on the back of the bolts holding the coil on the bracket.

if you havent already take that plastic shroud off thats covering the bottom side of your engine bay it traps heat under the hood and is one of the contributing fators to cherokee cooling issues... this is a neccesity if your doing the lower hose so might as well leave it off and save a little time.

Well the plan was to make some hood vents to let out some heat. Bought, primed and painted the grill-o-sheets, got the door edge molding and black silicone. (Using the write up from MRJCRod) But then I chickened out from cutting into the hood and just put some spacers in like a lot of others do. Maybe a little while later I'll go the vent route.

Solved my coolant leaking issue last night. I checked the tightness of the water pump bolts and two were loose. Tightened them all back up and a head broke off. It hasn't leaked at all today so hopefully the other 3 will keep the water pump sealed tight.(I really hope I don't have to deal with that bolt) Also put a new belt on.

Today I flushed the engine and radiator and replaced normal coolant with dexcool...
Changed the oil with RP 10W30 and Mopar filter and new air filter... Also greased about 9 fittings, Anyone know how many there are in total?

do explain the one man brake thingy!

Open your bleeder valve on the caliper attach a hose to the bleeder valve and have the other end submerged in brake fluid pump it about 5 times then BEFORE you remove the hose tighten the bleeder valve then fill your master cylinder back up and repeat with other side and repeat master cylinder refill.
This can also help you get out any air in the lines that are persistent

That sounds like Advance Auto Parts here. Last year I told the guy at the counter I had a 4.0L Inline 6 cylinder engine when I was buying spark plugs and wires, he brought out the right wires but only 4 plugs. I told him I needed two more and he said I didn't. I told him again it was a 6 cylinder and he wanted to argue with me saying I had said 4. I asked him why he got wires for a 6 and he took them to the back and came out with wires for a 4 cylinder. I was actually dumb enough to ask if he was serious and he looked at me like I wasn't even speaking english.:rotfl2:
Another time about 4 or 5 years ago I was upgrading my radiator and looking for a 3 core. Another genius at the same store told me there was no such thing. He wanted to sell me their oem style. I said I was going to keep looking at other stores and he said he could beat anyone elses price. I asked him how he could beat a price on something he doesn't sell and says does not exist, he just stood there staring at me LOL.:smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021::smiley-laughing021:

rear wheel drive!

6cyl

a/c needs a refresh

sounds like the ujoint in the driveshaft is loose, i think there is a support that could be bad i need to do more research

no radio, it was stolen, they cut the wires, yey :(

the seats are in pretty good shape.

The tach and MPG indicator dont work, but i think i know the problem, after doing research on it.

the gas guage works when it wants

just behind the rear driver side door is a nice scrape, hit and run from PO (PO=previous owner)

the front end needs to have an alignment and then new tires, they all look to be dry rotting, cracks everywhere

but for $800 i think i got a screaming deal.

Replaced the valve cover gasket in order to save some oil!!! I also welded on of the ends on my rear bumper ,but I forgot the camera. Glad I did cause I ran out of C-25 for my MIG and I have been out of Argon for the TIG for months so instead of being smart and waiting I broke out the old buzz box and did some stick welding for the fist time in years. I now remember why I got the MIG, the welding was not that bad but I forgot just how much BS you have to do to clean up the welds so the are always ugly and have to be ground down instead of just making a good looking weld and painting it.

Added more rectangle Baja lights to the roof rack, 2 more at the front and 2 at the back. Also put 2 small round lights on the brush guard matching the ones on the hood (Optronics Platinum Burner series). Nothing special but they get the job done and look good. Still need to hook up the wiring for the new lights and install the rear light switch, a red rocker switch from Olympic 4x4. (Now when the idiots drive up behind me with their brights on I can give them a little something, just hope I'll be able to tell if it's a cop before I do it.) I was thinking about changing over the rectangular headlights to round, but now I kinda like how it looks. I'll get some pics up later. :camera: Got a red led dome light from www.oznium.com and replaced the front dome light a couple days ago. There is a place where the flange is on the header that is prone to cracking. Use a mirror to check this out. Inspection mirrors are cheap. Kind of like what the dentist does. Make sure all the joints are tight. It may not make much noise since it is probably sucking air in instead of blowing out.

I think that is the reason for the high non-pollution standards, and I believe the reason for the pollution is due to how the air moves, or doesn't in California. Mountains for example. If the pollution isn't dispersed about the only thing you can do is pollute less.

In all reality the Native Americans who lived in the LA basin commented on smog long before we had cars. The LA basin is a natural catch for the stuff and we can't forget that the leading producer of hydrocarbons is anything that eats grass, hay, ect ect
