hope so, got a spare main leaf from friend and dismounted broken leaf pack yesterday. Today after work will assemble everything back. I believe some silicone seal and sheet metal helps for floor damage :D

Being super busy, just lurking here early morning everyday. Was no fabbing modding and wheeling. Drove hard last weekend on rough terrain with a load of weights in cargo, guess it may finish old crack. Leaf pack not touched since me completed bastard pack lift 7 years ago :d

Btw, how tight should be shackle and front leaf eye bolts? Guess, thay shall be not really tight, allowing circular movement. Am I correct?

What is your bastard pack like Od? The leaf configuration may have contributed to this. Can you post some pics later? The bolts should be good and tight. You want to tighten them after the weight of the vehicle is on them. The bushings need to be tight or you will get abnormal wear on the bolts and brackets

Yes, my 2nd leaf is cut main leaf. Both end is little over eye center. Crack is located at 2nd leaf end

Hey oderdene,
I'm not an engineer, but IMHO, I believe the second leaf may had a role to play in the failure.
I think perhaps the top edge might be too sharp ? The red arrow. Maybe a greater radius, as shown by the yellow lines, would alleviate the stresses on the main leaf. ??

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/misculanious/20150708_060834a_zpsrecfjlbw.jpg

As I said, I'm no engineer, but to me, a sharp edge like that would provide a great pivot point for stress riser.

cheers

p.s. unless the poor quality pic doesn't show, there is already a perfectly good radius there, therefor debunking my theory. :o Then I shall crawl back under my bottle of Rum....:smiley-taunt002:

Simple as.

A number '8' pool ball. I forget the size drills I used, sorry. :o
I used a stanley knife to remove the black rubber from the factory shifter, just around the base, and using a hacksaw, removed the section that fits onto gear shifter.
I found that a 22-250 shell fits perfectly onto the detent actuating rod. You know, the white plastic pleasure stick looking thingy. Perfect fit.
I drilled the pool ball, slowly getting larger so I didn't chip the ball, until it was a nice size for the 22-250 case.
I then turned it over to drill the bottom out until the bottom of the original shifter was an interference fit.

That's it. Make sure you orientate the mount properly, as they only go one way on the shifter.

It's MUCH more comfy to use, and the reason I attempted this, I kept knocking the trans into neutral with my knee, has been alleviated.

Replaced the light bulbs in the cluster, switch pods, and the console indicators. Not all were dead, but I changed them all anyway since I was already there. While the console was out, it got scrubbed. Fixed my parking brake light so it works now.

All the fresh bright bulbs and cleaning make a major improvement in how the vehicle looks inside.

Hey that was just after I was born... But I've looked into Yota's enough to know that it is still true.... especially in the US market.. at least in other countries they still offered the SFA's, and offered diesels and such... Heck can still get a SFA, diesel w/ the old late 70's-80's style bed on them... with modern interior... in some countries... Then again we always get the short end of the stick.. up until a few years back you could still go and buy and old school VW Beetle, brand new in Mexico... I thought that was so awesome, to be able to pick one up and get it back to the states and when someone is like, is that a 72?? You could just be like, nope it's a 2013... and see their reaction.. lol

Replaced another rock light bulb. Guess the bulb doesn't like mud... And over the past couple weeks, thanks to those wonderful drivers that use their cars for a living room while they should be noticing light changes, I've noticed my horn is sounding a bit hoarse. Knocked on the right one and the slosh of the ocean commenced. Pulled it off, and drained as much as I could and re-installed. I got up under there to listen while my brother sounded it. The right one wasn't putting out anything I could tell. So, looks like a replacement is in order. I know ZJ horns are louder and I've heard caddy horns can have some noise to them.

I have always wondered how much glare those light bars give on the hood

The color of the vehicle makes all the difference. Mine isn't bad at all, and its a dark blue. Its like shining a bright flashlight on a surface in front of your eyes. White will make you squint. :D

Well with white paint its quite a lot. So bad it makes the light bar almost worth leaving off.

yep yep yep ... you get so occupied, staring at every scratch and swirl in the bonnet paint ... You dont see the tree you're about to hit .. :D

Matt black finish will help a lot.

Give some thought to that.

I made up shields out of 6" poly drainpipe halves, angle cut, for some round lights I had on a landrover or something,

Worked fine except the road speed wind,

...kept turning the lights into anti-aircraft searchlights ... the whistling wasnt real enjoyable either.

Most successful fix imho ... is just mount the lights far enough back - so that the roof casts a shadow, to the leading edge of the bonnet.

Ive hit that tree many times. A light bar isnt gonna stop that.

Had a busy day. Tightened up a loose track bar bracket and pitman arm on the xj. Then painted the hood satin black so the light bar wouldn't blind me so much.

Then i plugged a tire on one of my 4wheelers and my Nissan. After that i put a new clutch cable on the mustang and put on some new style 5.0 emblems on the fenders.

My thoughts too.... but I like the look of the matted out hood too.

Anyone in a hot climate ever use plasti-dip on the hood? Just wondering how well it holds up to the sun beating down on it combined with underhood temps.

In more recent news... FINALLY swapped my wheels out. No more rubbing on the control arms and sway bar.

Getting ready to fight the road salt eating up the jeeps again this winter, I had rust again on both front doors at the bottom on the 98. I decided to grind down to bare metal and apply truck bed coating from the plastic door guard molding to the bottom of the door as well as to the underside of the vehicle. I also did the underside of the wife's 01. I used the Duplicolor brand for several reasons: It was available in the gallon can(I did not need a kit and it is smooth and not textured. A gallon cost about $70. Before this summer, I would just purchase 6 cans of spray undercoating and blast away at each of the jeeps. I hope this method of getting under the vehicle and brushing it on good lasts longer. I don't see many posts about how others prepare. I assume they either garage their jeeps for the winter or live in Texas like many on this site and don't have the problem.

Installed a budget boost on a friends 01 XJ. The body and interior looks great but the underbody needs some work and apparently some of the suspension has some rust issues. Shackles were shot, rear tailpipe bracket was rusted shut, both swaybar end links broke off at the swaybar and several other bolts took some pb blaster to get them off. This poor young kid barely has enough money to do any of the work and there is plenty more that needs to be fixed or corrected. At least I was able to get him started on the long road to the jeep life.

Interesting, I've never got a grasp on how that cable is supposed to stop axle wrap. If the spring makes an S then doesn't that shorten the length of the main leaf, thus making that cable useless?

Well, the ol' girl didn't pass yearly inspection. Was expecting it.
Fixed the exhaust leaks, with the gassless hot glue gun.
Fixed the non responsive door controls, with loads of WD40. [emoji12]
Apparently, 15 minutes of friggin around with the door switches and key isn't satisfactory. [emoji53] humph. Go figure.

Now I'm in the process of fixing the headlining.
Received the fabric, but I'm going to wash it and iron it.
I feel it has some type of wax or coating from manufacturing, it may hamper the effectiveness of the adhesive.

I have until Tuesday before rego runs out. Plenty of time....[emoji41] [emoji41]

Decided today I need a bunch of mods for the little american station wagon.

I think one of those fancy vortex thingos for the throttle body that guarantee a 25% increase in fuel economy,
... maybe one of those expensive air filters that guarantee better fuel economy,
.... and maybe a ubeaut brand of thermostat - since Im sure some of those guarantee better milage,

... not to mention all the fleabay items that guarantee better fuel economy ..

$100 for 16 US gallons today at the servo ..

... must need a service ... only getting about 18mpg

While parked at the bowser I was looking at the back corner of the little Hyundai/Great Wall/Proton/Kia, awd wagon - on the other side of bowsers ....

... and thinking what a low, little car it was - with buggerall rear storage.

Had a look at the weirdarse front lights on it, while I was cleaning the windscreen,

... and thought,

... EWWWWWWW ... she bought a jeep ... "cherokee" ..

Decided it was finally time to start upgrades on my wiring. The factory grounds were in bad shape, the paint wasn't even removed below the terminal. Just grounding through a rusty screw.
http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh37/Atakicat/IMG_20150802_131917081_HDR_zpslgao66pr.jpg

So I made up some new, much better quality 4ga cables, and installed a grounding stud.

I can already tell a difference, the starter spins much harder now. I still need to fab a cable for the alternator ground, then once I take care of a few oil leaks, I'll address the Positive side.

Yeah, you came right after we got pounded with flooding rains. The summers are always hot but this one is worse than the last couple. Be glad you weren't here in '11 though. Never want to go through that again. Texas had 100 days in a row hitting 100° or more with little rain. Needless to say, we lost a lot of trees. Wildfires were abundant. Hahaha, I only play when someone else buys the tickets. Prob why I haven't won in months...

I have mixed feelings on lotteries. I like that the proceeds tend to go towards schools and such but when you look at the demographics it's mostly the poor who are buying them. I used to have a friend that worked at a gas station and I would hang out there on occasion. It was depressing watching the same people come in, buy $40 in lottery tickets, go back out to their old rusty car and scratch away, and then come back in 20 minutes later and blow another wad of cash on tickets. Makes you just want to grab them and try to shake some sense into them, but as you said, "Its your $$, do with it what ya will"

The numbers aren't easy to find but a political friend tells me it's less than 5 percent of the total lottery revenue goes to education. And you're exactly right it's the lowest income level folks that sit there and buy that crap. Makes me wanna slap the shit out of ppl

Here in Central Florida the temperatures have been very hot. Running the Jeep in the 90's with a heat index of 100+ my temp gauge went past 210 and hit close to 230, I shut the A/C off for a few minutes to help that out since I was stop and go. My front right brake caliper was not happy and started to make the Jeep pull slightly. The pads didn't smoke but I know they got hot. I'll be pulling the brakes on that side apart to inspect and see if I need to replace the caliper since I've already replaced the driver's side. :bang:

Saweet! Are you running a case drop, or sye? If not, you may have driveline vibes.

I ran into vibes with mine (even with a drop and pinion shims) and due to internal issues, I had an sye installed in my t case when it was rebuilt.

The drop was removed when I had the sye installed. No point in running both.

I have a longer slip yoke. So far no vibes but time will tell once everything gets worked in. Infact I had some backlash before the lift, now it seems to be gone. If my I do get vibes I'm thinking about longer engine mounts to get my angles back instead of dropping the TC.

Best to install an SYE. Cheaper in some cases than modifying engine mounts.

They can done in the driveway in a day. The driveline will take a couple days to get manufactured though. Stock drivelines in XJ's will work for awhile, but they aren't the strongest in the world.

Motor mounts won't make much difference. Your pivot point is the trans mount with only maybe a foot and a half to the front u-joint of the rear driveshaft. It's 3-4 times that from the trans mount to the motor mounts. So raising the motor mounts an inch equals to maybe 1/4" downward for the u-joint connection. Just ballpark figures. Try holding a pen about one inch from the end with two fingers and lift the longer end. Note how much less the short end moves. Same principle.

Been awhile since I've posted on here. Last completed install on project snow ball was new motor mounts from ironman4x4fab. Was impressed by the quality of the mounts but was a little disappointed in the powder coating it flaked off the second a tool touched it. O well at least these mounts wont brake and on a side note they got rid of the last little wobble in the front end. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dzq6BVDV5x0PbM2AyrG-VqwCJlAigqrJ_ZZ9xL0Q-TgG=w1175-h661-no

Not to bad. The vib I noticed was at a stop at idle with ac on it vib at a high buzz. But I can live with that. The nice benifit was how much stiffer the front end gets. It's like a steering cross brace

Had some time recently to work on the third brake light cover. Got the main cover panel drilled and tapped to tighten it down from the inside of the interior trim panel.

8217

8218

Attached to the trim panel.

8219

8220

With it mounted, the correlation to the rear window. I tried getting it as close as I felt comfortable.

8222

To clean up the look some I started a template for a face plate to cover the internal bits and seal it up some.

8221

And replicated it in 16 gauge.

I tried it out the other day and it was much better on glare. I think i'm gonna slip some rubber edge trim on there once I finish it to seal it to the window. I still need to weld on some tabs I made the other day to mount the face plate, drill some holes, tap a few of those, and paint it. Hopefully will be done soon.

Finally glad to be back home and able to work on her, instead of just researching and purchasing parts... lol The below was actually from yesterday, but was so tired as I had only slept 4 hours in the last two days, didn't get a chance to post up last night...

Installed some hood spacers, and ran her a bit, and she is definitely cooler then she was before, still got hood vents that I plan to install shortly as well.. Any extra cooling is always good... and not like heating up for winter time is an issue for XJ's engines anyways... lol

Pulled trim off the hatch to chase a chaffed/cut wire that I had found prior to leaving for deployment, figured out what the wire went too, and have spliced in a new wire (properly, unlike whoever attempted it last time)... now my third brake light works, swapped in a spare rear wiper switch I had, now my rear wiper works again, now just to find a new rear hatch power lock actuator, so I can hopefully get that all working and button the hatch trim back up..

And installed my passenger side JCR antenna mount that just happened to be in the mailbox yesterday, and ran new coax to the front.. (not to get the rest of the CB installed and tune it for optimal performance)...

Anyone on here have the thread link for steering box upgrades? The Durango box is supposed to be a good upgrade. I run 33 and 35 inch tires, depending on where I'm driving. Thanks

And on the note of your Durango box upgrade question, ordered up my new Durango gearbox, pressure line, and return line... will be going to pick it all up this morning after I finish my in processing from deployment.. Can't wait to not have wondering steering anymore...

Got new Durango steering gearbox installed, along with both new lines, IRO gearbox spacer, front bumper tie in plates and new bolts. Had to take gearbox to NAPA machine shop and have them remove the pitman arm, and it was certainly not an easy task even for the professionals there... so I didn't stand any chance of getting it off using a pitman puller... But I certainly tried anyways..

Also sprayed lithium grease in all the hood latch mechanisms and as much of the cable as I could, and all the door hinges and latches.. (now if I could just figure out why the drivers side lock switch jambs up and I can't lock the door using the key without unhooking the linkage from the door lock rocker)

Got everything back together and buttoned up with the Durango steering box swap, got it all filled and purged and working pretty well.. Feels like the steering is still a bit loose, but far better the it was.. I think I'm pretty sure that once I get the tie rod and the drag link all aligned and good, that it'll tighten it back up correctly... Think alot of it is I'm just used to my Ram's tight steering, but just feels like it might have a little dead spot... but think it's mainly just the adjustments..

Also got the front stinger bumper out of the living room and installed on the XJ where it belongs... Unfortunately I scuffed a big section of the liner off of it, on accident.. but it looks good on there... Just need a nice warm day with no rain, so I can hit up the couple spots that were scuffed w/ liner again...

Nice work Jake ! I love to build my own stuff for the Red Lizard but the last two years have been barren for that. Far to busy building the farm Buzzard's Roost. My latest acquisition has been three hogs for our new Guinea Hog breeding program. At least I still get to wheel around the farm. One of the perks of living on the top of the ridge and making my own trails.

I was just thinking about messaging you! Glad to have ya back bud, been some time. Sounds like you've been busy though. I must admit I don't have much experience with hogs, other than that one that ran out in front of us a couple weeks ago... Sure would like to have my own land to wheel on... lucky! :D

Dropped a few more things off at the machine shop. Total cost of machining everything up to now, 270 bucks.

Ran my pressure washer over it, and gave her some hand scrubbing... Looks even nicer getting all the grunge and such from her sitting with the PO, and since she's been sitting a bit @ my house...

And I just got back from a sketchy drive over to a friends house to put her up on a trailer, to be ready to go in the AM for a trip to a shop, to have the front end alignment as well as a few other things taken care of, so I can hopefully get her ready to drive and flex out before the weather turns to cold days..

Hoping mine will too once the alignment is done.. figure it can't hurt anyways.. But between the Long arms, OTK steering and double shear TB.. definitely need an alignment for sure!!!

That looks a whole lot cleaner now. You have any more pics of the back seat area, what you removed and what you replaced it with? I've been considering doing the same thing.

I took out the whole rear seat and got another back rest from the wrecking yard. I took the cover and padding off and bolted some plywood to it. It uses the original mount. I support it for now w/2 pieces of plywood bolted to where the seat rested.

May be less of a hindrance, with the seatbelts removed. But, unless you have your XJ mod plated/engineered for 2 seats, you will get defected.
If it's registered as a 5 seat vehicle, it must have 5 seats and 5 seat belts, fitted.
Just a friendly FYI.
Cheers

As long as each of my passengers has a secure seatbelt, I'm golden. :drinking:
It must be rough dealing with those inspectors. :bang:

Controlled breathing is key, and it may help to get the cotton out of the way.:keegirl:
