I gotta admit Eric, now that I see it on my computer instead of on Facebook on my phone, it looks a lot better than I thought it did! Nicely done! I think if I did mine red though it wouldn't look as good lol.

Thanks brother! Yeah that red might be hard to match. Bronze might look good!

Yeah trust me not by choice... apparently there are downsides to being military and trying to do the divorce thing... so the dually owned Jeep had to go... That's ok, I got an awesome looking truck that I am loving (although wish I could have afforded the diesel I really wanted)... and now I can pick up another XJ that can be hauled behind the truck to the trails!! I will return with a new rig as soon as I can, that is for sure...

Oh, definitely... Going through withdraws already... I found one I was looking at before I got home from deployment anyways.. It is not as new or as nice of shape as the 98 was... But it will give me something to build, play with and hit the trails with, and that is all that really matters to me!!

Got back to the XJ a little. Replaced one and added another to the front tow hook mounts, replaced a flickering LED bulb in the floor board with a 360° bulbs and matched the other side.

Also, i've been trying to change the t-case fluid but can't get the fill plug out. Can i put a bigger bar on this? I didn't just want to breaker bar it due to the case being aluminum without knowing. So far i've pb'd it for a few days and used a 1/2" rachet, but no go.

I had to put a pipe on a big ol allen wrench to get mine transfer case plug out. I wasn't sure how much to tighten it back up, so it will probably be hard to get out next time too. I'll use a socket allen and a breaker bar next time and it should be fine.

I didn't do anything to my xj today, but I did drive past it's place of birth in Toledo, OH. I had to drive down to Findlay, OH to open up a new store. Kind of sucks that I barely made money on the mileage they pay, but I cranked out 13.5 hours of overtime so it works out.

Changed out the t-case fluid. Its so easy and didn't even need the cheater pipe. The breaker bar gave me enough leverage.

It was about an inch below the hole, so i'm glad i got it done.

installed pressure hose. removal of old hose - steering gearbox end was pain in the a$$, break apart metal part first, near to gearbox and then used a socket+extension+breaker bar, finally turned it.

now I have a perfect working steering as before

Didn't happen today but Friday my son drove the left front wheel nearly off of the '98 (wheel bearing). Had it towed to my shop and Saturday we (me watching mostly) changed the wheel bearing and the axle u-joint on the driver side. Towing insurance is a wonderful investment!

Didn't do it today but I'm new so get over it.

Fixed the notorious drivers side speaker problem. Got tired of opening and closing my door 50 times while driving trying to get the speaker to work. Popped the door panel off along with the panel behind the hood release. Took the speaker out, fished some new speaker wire I found laying in the garage to the door, stabbed a hole in the rubber grommet (and myself) brought it through. Cut the old speaker wire a little above the connectors soldered it all up. Kept the factory speaker connector because poor people can't afford new speakers. SHABAM SHOULDA DONE IT MONTHS AGO.

Okay, Saturday i finished up the tie downs. Four total, one in each corner of the cargo area. They're rated at 300# each, so they should be adequate. On the backside i put some 1 1/4" washers, with a liberal coating of silicone to keep the liquid stuff out. Painted of course with stainless button heads, cause that's how i do things. :p

Made a ramp for the dogs my friend who will be walking them for me when I go to Cali for Christmas and New Years :)

I actually made it on Saturday night but today was the first day of training. It is a motorcycle ramp my friend gave me and I got some free 1/4 ply another friend was throwing away lol! And then I actually bought some self tappers and screwed the ply wood down.

I normally just lift in and out the older fellas since my jeep is so high off the ground. Helps keep me in shape :) but now the older fellas are bing ramp trained and when I get back I'll probably train all of them on the ramp just because! But for now it's just the older fellas :)

Good .. it made a great, drying rack, over the weekend .. .. :D

The amplimesh is great for tieing stuff down ... but I know from other similiar racks in the past ... It destroys tyre sidewalls and plastic jerrycans - so some padding is needed at times.

This was a quickfix until I get some new, locating brackets, finished ...

It's new alternator time for the '92...picked up a 140 amp (actually putting out 136 amps as tested)...so now the PITA part starts, getting the old one out! The unibody rails are right below it, so may have to remove the bracket as well...it's cold out right now, but it's gotta get done! Replaced my battery with a red top Optima as well...off to the wrenches!!!!

Took it to the junkyard yesterday and bought her a few goodies. My front shocks were completely shot, so I bought the nicest ones I could find to hold me over until I can piece together my lift. They were off a red XJ, but you know what they say, red jeeps make great parts...:smiley-taunt002: Installed them last night and took it for a spin today. It feels A LOT better, no more nosedives in hard braking and a lot less clunks when hitting bumps. Also found a replacement wheel cover for my missing one and a couple tow hooks off a ZJ. The girlfriend found a shiny Jeep wheel cover she liked off a Wagoneer so we bought that too.

lol, yeah this was the first time for her to drive it. We "practiced" driving it last night just to make sure she could handle it. I kept trying to persuade her to take the civic, but I think deep down she was excited as hell at the thought of driving the xj :D She's a much safer driver than I am and it was all back roads so it's ok.

Day 2 of decorations... didn't go as well as planned. Found a problem while working on the rear bumper.

4121

I check the brake fluid just about every time i drive it, was about 1/8" below normal today. Also, i drove it Sunday and it wasn't like this, i checked before. I did notice the fluid was down a little before, and added the needed to get back to normal but didn't find any leaks then. It must have started Sunday when i was driving it because it has sprayed around the tire.

Anyways i gotta figure out what i want to do. With all the decorating i'm doing to it, and really just sounds like a good time, there's a big jeep parade the 21st i want to make it to. Either quickly get the rest of the parts i need for the zj disc swap or go down and get a wheel cylinder for a quick repair. But wasted money because i plan on doing the swap soon, just don't have the stuff yet... or really a ton of time to do it. Decisions, decisions

That's a good point. I didn't realize they were only $10 brand new. I would prob do that. It sucks that you have to just turn around and rip out the brand new but I know I would probably rather do that rather than rush into a big job like a disc swap. Tough call.

I replaced my hatch struts and started trying to figure out how I should proceed on fixing my driver's seat. It's broken underneath (something metal underneath has broken in about 3 spots and the seat is barely hanging on by one spot in the rear right section and I'm afraid pulling the seat could kill it completely) so I'm looking at pulling the passenger seat to see how it's laid out on the underside and where the most likely breaks would come from.

However, it became frickin' freezin' so I stopped after swapping out the struts. The hatch strut replacement was pretty comical - I was actually trying to install them upside down, even though I was attempting to replace them exactly as the original ones came out. I figured out pretty quickly that the end I was trying to attach to the base was too large to fit next to the trim - and then it finally dawned on me that I needed to put the SMALL end there and the LARGE end on the hatch itself where there is TONS of room.

Fun was had by all...I did get pictures of everything done, I just don't think anyone here needs a howto guide on swapping out hatch struts. :)

Seat mounts are pretty basic unless you have electric seats. Four bolts and they are out. The only real problem comes if the floor board is rusted out where they attach. Crawl underneath and have a look see at the floor boards

The floor boards looked pretty solid, no worries there (so far) and I have basic non-electric everything in the Jeep, but my main concern is "what" exactly is broken under the seat. It's obviously metal, so it's the frame or perhaps the bracket the seat rests on. And that is where I'm nervous about pulling the driver's seat right now - if it twists or bends the wrong way taking it out...I'll be seatless (and not in Seattle)...which is where my idea came about of seeing what's under those seats by removing the passenger side first to see if it's possible to do a swap between the two.

However, when the temp hits below 32f, I stay inside. >.>

Yea ditto.... too cold for Jeep work out of a garage.
Your seat issue sounds like one that is typical of older Cherokees, in that the vertical supports for the seat get weak over time, and break. This usually happens to one side or the other first, and gives you that "gangsta lean" to one side. The only fix?... either swap out the whole seat, or you're going to have to strip it. Pulling the cover off, removing the foam, and get in there and weld the supports back together (might be a good time for a little reinforcement too!)
If your problem is lower, then it could be brackets themselves. I've seen it before, but it's not as common. If your seat is sound, then all you'll be needing to do is swap the seat to a new base. You could grab one from the junk yard with ease.

hey slut!! love the handle. Above 4/5" inches you start needing to mod the driveline. Slip yoke elim is necessary. as is different rear shaft (longer, double cardan). I'd personally use 6" springs instead of spacers, but lots of folks use them with no problem.

Today, my reverse projectors showed up. also sourced some Wrangler rock rail take offs I'm picking up at lunch. Maybe that welder really IS a necessity.

Of course I have the 44" coming in but I have plans for another 20" for the back and possibly 2 x 20" for the sides. That would require a roof rack though.

I'll probably stop at the rear light. Did think about getting a red filter to put on the rear 20", hook it to the brakes and use (on special occasions) as a 3rd brake light. :D

Probably in a month or two. I still have stock size tires and I'd like to have some 33's ready to go on so I don't look like I have roller skate wheels. It looks fine on the 3" lift I currently have, but probably not for a bigger lift. Problem as usual is convincing the wife to let me have $$$ to buy some tires :D

And those bumpers under there are off TimmyTXJ's Jeep. I basically took them to see if I could use the metal to fab something up so they'll be sitting for a while unless somebody else needs/wants them (free)

Denied!

Again getting at it late killed progress. But using my new wrench i got the drivers side broke from the cylinder... but its seized to the line. Plus the passengers side started to strip and wouldn't come free. So, after a short mental debate i chose to just go ahead and replace the lines. With a little more looking at how rusted they are its probably best anyhow. Short story i got the lines tonight after church and need to cut, bend and reflare them tomorrow. And i just realized the flaring tool i got a few weeks ago isn't a double flaring tool, so i'll need to rent one.

It is possible to do a single flare. But a double flare is much better. The reason is that single flares crack at the edge on steel lines most times. That is why the ends are folded over, to keep the edge from cracking

Used to be dunes with some dirt trails surrounding it, and now they have started to develop  Long story short we drove onto an unpaved sandy-dirt road right after 2 days of straight rain not considering the fact that I have straight tread tires and the mud was deeeeeeeeep :smiley-taunt002:

It is possible to do a single flare. But a double flare is much better. The reason is that single flares crack at the edge on steel lines most times. That is why the ends are folded over, to keep the edge from cracking

This is true. I have found that if you take it nice and slow, the flare forms with no cracks.

Double flare is better, but saves from having to buy new flare kit. Most older brake lines are all single flare and they have held up for decades! ;)

Thanks guys, good info there.

Finally, a good day of progress. I got the wheel cylinders swapped out with only breaking one spring. So another $10 for a temp fix. And then moved on to making the lines. Drivers side was easy, and the right length. Passengers side being so long took a while and had to be cut down. I did end up going with the double flare since i saw the factory lines were done so. Also got the brakes reassembled, but ran out of time. Gonna bleed tomorrow. Now, just hoping they don't leak.

Just be careful, if the exhaust pipe isn't exciting out the side or something, the fumes can leak into the cab.

That being said, post a video of how it sounds :D

Finally did something with my pile of junkyard parts! Changed out my rear axle with a junkyard find Chrysler 8.25 LSD, same gearing (3.55). Can't wait to go hammer on that upgrade! Took the opportunity to change out shims and pins while I had axle out, no more driveline chatter...Also changed out the tank sending unit to correct downhill fuel leak. Put the speakers back in the hatch and reattached the hatch trim with nutserts. (Casualty of recent trip to Charlou's Gap) Last but not least I FINALLY installed my RE disconnects. Bought those things 2 months ago! Feel like I finally had a REAL day off; I'm goin wheelin' the next time that happens!:smiley-chores003:

don't worry about the fumes I'm going to get a 90 degree angle and shoot the exhaust out just before my back tire.

and I will try to get a video but last time I tried to upload a two minute video it took 3&a half hours and then it still failed.

and to the guys who were talking about just take the doors off for drive fast with the stock exhaust I really can't even hear the exhaust notes until about 3 grand. I will be taking doors off next summer

Actually, my XJ already had the 8.25, I just swapped in a unit that has Limited Slip with the same gears. From what I've read/researched the 8.25 is a stronger axle than the Dana 35; I can tell you in a side-by-side compare that certainly appears to be the case. EVERYTHING about the 8.25 looks beefier. Good news is that it's a straight swap and you get bigger brakes in the bargain. AND, the 8.25 is a readily available junkyard part.

Going good...

Got the brakes bled, and cleaned everything up so i could check for leaks. Took it for a drive around the neighborhood and after some a little tire screeching it seems to be doing well. And as of yet, no leaks!

Also replaced the rear exhaust hanger isolator. I have still been getting that clunking under acceleration so hopefully this took care of that.

I have the 35 in mine that's why I was wondering. Probably a different u joint for the rear axle and ubolts and maybe some brake line adapters is what I'd need. I was doing some research also and I'm still on the fence. There's plenty of guys out there wheeling a 35 yet with decent results.

Sorry guys, its been a LONG days so i'm gonna keep this short and elaborate in other threads tomorrow.

Storms were bad, so we delayed leaving a little and glad we did! Went to Jingle Jeeps 2013! 40 wranglers (mostly JKs, couple TJ/LJs, and 1 YJ) and 2 XJs (one of which was mine). So, not the biggest turnout but pretty cool none the less. Knew no one there, but made sure to talk to the other XJ owner. He now knows about xjtalk. :D Decorated some, met Santa, got judged, drivers meeting, and then we were escorted with two vans full of toys to the children battling cancer at Memorial Hermann. Then went to the sponsors store for cocoa and cookies, plus awards for decorations. Then went to a subdivision known for having a lot of light displays (that was a HOOT in itself!) for a few hours. What a day!!!

And a few pics... again on other threads will be better and a much more numerous amount of them. Plus a video of the parade.

Well this was yesterday, fixed a small rip in the soft top for the tj, sewed it up with fishing line then covered it with a black canvas tent patch. Should hold up until a new soft top can be acquired, and it definitely looks better than the piece of the zebra striped duct-tape the previous owner used... Changed spark plugs and air filter on the TJ as well. I think the XJ was feeling a bit left out after all the attention that has been given to the TJ so she got new rear shocks and I installed a Christmas present that came early, new rear hatch struts! Found something out too, the girlfriend doesn't seem to mind me being out in the garage as much. As long as I'm working on HER Jeep!

Yesterday I used it to pick up another load of firewood. I had to drove through about 18" snow to get in to the pile. I brought the pull pal with me just in cad I needed to winch out but the ice was thick enough that I didn't really sink in as far as I expected.

Found new hood cable release, and center console mount at the salvage yard. Replaced release. Took the front front door panels off, thoroughly cleaned. Resoldered some cold
solder joints in the driver child lock-out button.

I have a 1997 Cherokee and my original alternator died at the 205,000 mile marker. I am replacing with an upgraded 130 amp version that is listed as optional for my jeep. The case is bigger, so I am grinding on the bracket with my Dremel tool as suggested to me by other jeepers to get it to fit. I upgraded my alternator cables too. Went with 6 gauge welding wire. I'm sure that some time ago you could probably find the correct size bracket that you don't have to grind on. Junkyard? I was told that Jeep Cherokees that were ordered by the National Forest Department came with these high amp alternators. Maybe one from PA Performance or Mean Green would bolt right in without any grinding needed, but those cost about $200 or more. I got a rebuilt one from my local parts store here in Lake Arrowhead. Don's Auto Supply in Rim Forest.

Thanks, I built the tail light boxes and those are optronics led lights. The orfab armor just has built in guards no lights.

Good work! I've been considering doing dikdik like this too. I was a bit concerned with the location of the tail lights, turn signals and reverse lights. I think some states require the lights to also be visible from the side.

I originally had the idea of getting the metal housing from Rusty's and the fitting additional lights on the side of the box. Thoughts?

Some states do require lights to be seen from the side. If you look the orf panels do have cut outs so they can be seen. Those things look awesome on there. I ordered the ones from JCR and I can't wait for them to show. I know that JCR has rear light boxes available for purchase if you don't want to make your own or whatever.

If you look at the rear of a semi trailer you will see 3 smaller red lights right above the license plate. I'm 99% sure IL requires side lights.

Jcr does make quarter armor with the tail light boxes made in too.

Jake, if you would let us know the quality on those. I'd like to know a real world difference of the two.

Thanks, I had some 3/4" led lights in my taillights, so I drilled the orfab armor and installed them there, one red for side marker and an amber one that flashes with the signal. Would be an easy install into rustys boxes.

Mocked up the LED bar on the front bumper. Gonna have to make some short mounts to space it out from the grille a little. This thing is BRIGHT! About the same size overall as my 55w Blazer driving lights (together) but put out probably well over ten times the light. Me = excited!

The LED bars are great. I fit a 22" inside the stock front bumper.
It makes the stock headlights obsolete, even with upgraded harness and high watt sealed beams.

That's nice. Have you thought about anything to keep rocks off of it? Also any concern about heat build up? probably not an issue with short running times.

Nice fit! I thought about cutting out and insetting the light into the bumper but i plan on a new bumper later on so its just easier to put it on top. And it actually fits very well between my driving lights.

I think I've stumbled into a new obsession.

Last night tried to put my license plate sticker on but it was too wet/cold to stick. When I got home from work I removed the plate washed it in the sink, then hit it with the wife's hair drier till it was too hot to touch. That sticker is going nowhere now.

Adjusted the right rear brake... been locking up on that side at moderate braking. But still does so even after putting it back to where it was before i adjusted it in the first place.

Also, replaced one of the heater hoses... The old one was a bit stretched at one end and leaked at the heater control valve. The odd thing is the hose i replaced it with was just about right on one end and really hard to slip on the other. x2

This morning I saw my neighbor struggling to get is 87 Chevy pickup out of the driveway. It's been buried in the snow for so long that the hubs were frozen and he couldn't get it into 4WD. So I threw a strap on his hitch and pulled him over the 2'snowbank with ease. I love that the XJ has HERO right in its name.

Might have been easier to take the hose off. Mines hard to get to, and its pretty straight.
