I dreamed I had my XJ with me on this trip.

I also realized that thanks to XjTalk, I made a friend out here in Moab, a long way from home, and there is solid hope I can get the Explorer fixed and resume our vacation.

Radiator Test day 1:
Highway with a/c = 210*
Sitting in the drive thru with a/c = 228*
Sitting in the drive thru with a/c off = 210*

I can live with that for now ;) We'll see the rest of the week

I have removed the thermostat and sit at 190 everywhere, with and without AC.

Some say no thermostat is bad but as long as the block hits it's spec'd 185 operating temp your good to go.

Lousy lower thermostat housing is PLASTIC, it separated during a serious throttle stomp passing a slow truck and trailer and stranded us in Cortez, Colorado.

The AAA membership I bought last week and Bob (bad luck on XJTalk) came to our rescue, waiting for " the real parts guy" to get in to work at the Ford dealership to get the part tracked down.

Ok....

The past week and a half has been crazy.

Last week I spent every night of the week sanding and scuffing on the jeep for my buddy to finish paint.

Friday night we put her back together. Saturday, we had to adjust the hood. That took about an hour to get it right. The new hood just didn't want to fit. (I'm starting to find out that it must have a LOT more damage than I thought, as nothing on the front wants to line up right:sad0147:)

This week, I have done a lot of small stuff. That has all turned into long drawn out issues.

Had to change the headlights and the front turn signal bulbs. The drivers side headlight adjusting screw won't stay put, and keeps falling.

Engine is overheating when idling, and the electric fan won't kick on. I have changed the relay and the coolant temp sensor. I have made 4 trips to the parts store for this issue. Bought the electric fan, ended up not needing it, and they gave me the wrong temp sensor once. :bang:

I changed the worn out struts on the tailgate. The parts house gave me an apparently used one on one side, which I didn't notice at first. When testing it out after installation, it flew off and almost hit my wife in the face :mad0090:

Took it back, got a different one, but it was a newer model. Ended up having to use a razor knife to cut away some of the plastic molding around the knob to make it fit. It looks funny because it is 2 different struts, but it works! :bacondance:

Starter started dragging the morning after I got it back from paint, and has miraculously started working fine this morning (after I had made arrangements to change it). Tonight I am going to my buddies house to change it. I was able to get a reman one cheap ($60) and opted for that instead of the new solenoid/clean it myself route. The solenoids locally were $45. I figured the extra $15 was worth my time.

Probably going to wire up a manual switch tonight to for the electric fan as well...

Crazy few days!

Oh and there is a popping when I do a sharp left hand turn coming from the passenger side... guess I will be looking into that. :P

I guess that's a plus considering the crud you found on the plug! I was wondering, did you spray down the inside with brake cleaner and wipe it out or just drain, wipe out the cover, and fill her back up? I've read some conflicting things about this and would like an expert opinion.

89Laredo
07-26-2013, 01:01 PM
Im far from an expert... I didnt spray it, the 8.8 has a "sump" at the bottom of the case that holds a couple ounces of fluid, I didnt want to fill that full of cleaner and then worry about not getting it all out. I just soaked up as much as I could out of that spot with a rag, and cleaned the gasket surfaces with acetone on a rag.

I think the crap on the magnet was pieces of slag or something from when it was welded (was done two owners ago)

Last night went to my buddies house... had a lovely diner that my wife prepared...

Then we changed the starter and the fan clutch.

Starter sounds 10million times better... fan clutch was a waste of $40 and an hour. Still having overheating issues at idle. :bang: HOWEVER, we think we figured it out last night...

The ONE THING I didn't check was the thermostat. As it was idling after we installed the fan clutch, we noticed it never seemed to cycle. The top radiator hose always stayed squeezable/built pressure.

Buying a new t-stat tonight, and will change it after I get back in town Sunday.

Okay so I put in a new radiator, OEM heavy duty 2 row.
I replaced the perfectly good Grand Cherokee Heavy Duty fan clutch with a stock one from O'reilys. Same one Matt just did to his.
Swapped out the A/C compressor, as I think this other NEW unit is the reason why I can't get lower than 58 degree cooling. My ENTIRE A/C system is new! Charged the A/C system.

Okay well this is what I WILL be doing today, probably get started in about an hour.

Okay I got started about 2pm, ate a big plate of BBQ, man wish I hadn't now, and took a little rest before getting out there in the heat.

So far I have everything out, radiator, GC fan clutch and A/C compressor.

I have the stock fan clutch installed, the new A/C compressor installed and just started pulling vacuum on the system. Next will be getting the belt tightening tool (why I'm up here at the computer) and adjusting the belt, tightening everything down, then installing the radiator.

Should be done in less than ah hour, with the exception of the vacuum and filling of the system. Boy I hope the compressor was the problem. Looking forward to some nice 38-ish vent temps.

Have you tried to see whether or not your evaporator coil is bad? I don't know how old your Jeep is but if it's old enough it could have an accumulator as well which may need some looking into. If your evaporator coil is bad then you wouldn't be getting very much cold air into your car. I trust that you know what the evaporator does but in the off chance you don't, it evaporates the liquid refrigerant into a gas so that it can take the heat with it back through the AC system again. It's quite possible that it doesn't work as efficiently as it should which in turn would make everything else not work as efficiently as it should.

Changed the oil, transmission fluid, and transfer case fluid. Overfilled the transmission and had to dump some out.

Everybody says to buy a fluid pump for the transfer case, but I cheaped out and got what looks like a gigantic syringe meant for mixing 2 cycle fuel. It worked, but took forever. To make matters worse, the fluid looked like it'd been changed recently so I probably could have skipped it. At least I know now, though.

Hosed some of the mud out of the undercarriage while I was at it. It had gathered a lot.

Fixed the power door locks in my '95. Very easy job!
For those unsure how to do it, remove the trims, find the rod that controls the locks, and spray the plastic "junctions" (usually greased - the grease gets sticky over time and doesn't lubricate any more.) on the rods with WD40/Inox or similar.
Now they all lock and unlock at the same time, on command...

I didn't necessarily do this but I had my mechanic do it since I really didn't feel comfortable trying. As some of you know, my XJ blew the radiator almost a week ago. Well I wasn't comfortable trying to start it myself after that, so I had him fire it up to see if it would still start under its own power or if the pistons had seized up. We turned it on, it kicked over and it remained running so we're taking it as a sign the pistons had not seized and we're moving on to the rest of the problems that need to be repaired. Should have my XJ back up and running next week.

Who's workin on it ??

they are harder to work with, I have a pair, but I didnt use them. I couldent see the bolts for the stock bumper so everything was by feel and the space was so tight I could barely get my squatch hands in as is lol

ok , you at least remembered you have some ......my brand new ones lol lol . Funny to hear you say that about wearing gloves. I can't even use the surgical kind , need to feel whats going on, mabey thats why my big hands are one giant scar  bumper looks good , winch mount ??

Norcal Quality Automotive by Mize Tire Specialists and Jeannie's Consignment. His name is Brad. His family owns the shop. His wife is the receptionist. He's a good guy. Doesn't force you into anything and fixes only what you want him to fix. He doesn't overcharge and try to swindle you like other mechanics. He's even gonna let me help him fix my own car. I told him the radiator I need at Autozone is 102.99 which is really how much it is and he said "Alright we'll charge you that much for the radiator and you can pay labor costs." All in all it's gonna cost me about 250 to fix the radiator which is a damn good deal cause it includes the testing, fluids, and hoses. He's a good mechanic. I trust him with my car over everyone else.

I've never met him , strange I thought I knew everybody up on the hill but It's good to hear you have so much confidence in him and you two have a working agreement. I guess I'll have to stop by and introduce myself sometime . I just know there are several good mechanics here and some that I wouldn't take a broken wagon too !! Glad you found a good one.

Yeah I don't even have my money yet but my lawyer gave me a letter to give to him stating that he can work on my car and expect to get paid. I gave it to him and he said "Well I trust you just like you trust me so I'll start work on your car on Tuesday." He's closed Monday so he's gonna get to it the day after. $408 for a new radiator, flushing, hoses, fluids, and water pump which includes labor and diagnostics. Great deal I'll say. He went to Wyotech and graduated with honors so I'd say he knows his stuff.

I used Zello to call Matt back. No particular channel since I think he was the only one out there that had Zello installed. It's a pretty handy tool to have as long as you have cell reception! Jimbo did a great job of keeping an eye on me behind him when we went through the more hairy areas that my 3" lift and stock bald tires had trouble with. (As you can see) I pushed the limits of my jeep further than last time and went through a lot more stuff than I have before. It helps knowing I don't have to drive it to work on Monday! I was really impressed what it made it through! I did get stuck a few more times, but tire traction on my bald tires and height were my main downfall. I was really impressed with what my little jeep followed them through!

I spent 5 hours Friday night and 12 hours Saturday rescuing my dad (4.3lxj) from the Fordyce creek area. It was an epic journey, involving sunburns in the day and near freezing temps at night, an xj, yj, tj, jk, chevy truck and trailer, septic pumping truck, refrigerator, a long walk, hitch hiking and a dozen how much longer phone calls. I am home now and he should be tomorrow. I am sure more of the story will unravel later this week

Had quite a frustrating time getting the trans cooler finished plumbed Saturday. Found a bad o-ring and of course couldn't find my supply. Spent hours looking but finally gave in and went to Advance and got 2 sets (1-standard, 1-metric). It was getting late by that time so rushed to get it put together. Got it all done and drove it later. I left the grille off the front so i could check for leaks and am glad to say there were none. Hopefully my transmission likes it as much as i do. And i can check off another thing I've done.

Superman??? lol and the radiator is out and the new one is in. Turns out the water pump was fine (had it replaced anyway), but the radiator is what came apart. The right side tank exploded and busted apart which caused the radiator to drain all of its fluid. So now the thermostat, radiator, and water pump are all new as well as the serpentine belt since that had a lot of cracks in it. Red is being way less temperamental now lol

Oh yeah definitely!Turns out that the water pump WAS bad. It was seeping coolant which is why I had to constantly refill the radiator with extra fluid. So I'm glad I was able to remove all of it and get it new. I'm also apprenticing under my mechanic who is fixing my XJ. So you could say it's been a pretty good day.

Yeah I'm hopefully going to go back this semester. I just hope that I get this job at AutoZone so I can say I've apprenticed under a mechanic AND have work related experience so they waive my first class. That way I can go right to the REAL learning.

In other news, I got my XJ back from the mechanic today. She runs great. No more overheating, no more seeping water pump and goodbye cracked drive belt. She did a great job on the road again with one minor hiccup this morning. I drove her about .3 of a mile to a gas station near my house, parked, then shut off the engine. I go inside maybe 5 minutes and buy some snacks for work. Come back out, try to fire her up and nothing happens except a sorta hard thud as if the starter wasn't able to move. Try it again and it tries to fire up for about half a second then thuds and stops. I wait 5 seconds and try again and she fires up as if nothing was wrong. Check Engine light did NOT come on so I'm unclear as to what it was (probably the crappy O'Reilley's starter). I'm going to call my mechanic on Monday and see if he found anything strange. As for me, no visible damage or leaks that I can see, and she ran great for over 20 miles with no problems. We'll see how she is when I try to fire her up after work today.

Also got some new shoes for her! BFG A/T tires all around! I think she likes them.

really stiff and won't return to center. Feels like I have about 10 to 20% power assist.
I'm leaning towards the pump I put it in, it was a used one off of a spare motor I bought. its whining, but I thought that was because of the pressure mod I did.
I asked odgreen and he seems to think it a restricted high pressure line though since it was the same issue with two pumps & 2 boxes.

Didn't do anything to it today but used it to go to an Estate sale. Picked up all this for $15! Highlights include: folding military-style shovel, 2" strap, soldering gun, assorted cold chisels, and lucky horseshoe to help me out in the shop (I'll take all the help I can get). :out:

Took the pressure valve back apart and cut a little bit off of the "Guide" (a step I missed when I had it apart before).

Had to cut the pressure line, couldnt get it off with a wrench :( Gotta pick up a new one after work tomorrow.

Started thinking about other causes besides the hydraulic system. When we changed the box friday we found that this joint was extremely stiff, had to use a prybar and alot of force to get it to move any. Could that be causing my issue?

Installed some quick disconnects this weekend. While I was under the Jeep, I noticed that there were no cotter pins in the castelated nuts where the steering ties into the knuckle... either they rusted off or the guy that swapped out my tie rod while installing the lift failed to put them in. Admittedly, I should have been more vigilant in checking everything over before wheeling it but quite frankly, when I hire someone to do I job, I don't think it's too much to ask that they do it completely. I can't believe there are people out there that are willing to put others lives at risk like that.

Also received my new rear bumper/tire carrier from Dirtbound. My initial thoughts are that I still like the concept of their Mojave bumper but the quality is lacking, especially when compared to the JCR bumper I put on the front. There is a fair amount of weld spatter to clean up and many of the edges need to be knocked down because they're sharp (never dressed after cutting). The steel they used to fabricate the main part of the bumper has quite a bit of rash and some pitting on it. It's not bad enough for me to want to go through the hassle of sending it back though. I'll make it work but it'll take a little more time and effort on my part than I was expecting. I'm also a bit surprised that they didn't include any hardware or installation notes with the bumper.

Man Tim, can't catch a break! I've been wanting to build my own bumpers, but I need a welder, some material, and most importantly... I need to learn to weld! All that together means buying bumpers will be cheaper for me.

Had a local shop do some steering work on our '94 chevy 1/2 ton and didn't put a cotter pin at the pitman arm. Had the steering come loose on a four lane road and the truck turned right. Thankfully there was a side street it veered on to and stopped just before the curb. Just imagine if that was on I45 or something.

A welder is an investment. :D The money it costs will be made back with future fixes/mods. At least that's how i figure it when i'm deciding to spend money on tools versus having someone else do the work. One, you're paying for someone else's time. The other, you are owning another tool.

Worked on my steering some more.
I think one of two things is happening....
A: The Durango box is a thirsty bitch and needs alot more flow than a stock box
B: My pump is tired and Im putting a bandaid on it.
Im Ok with either one of these options. lol
Drilled the output to 11/64, stock is just under 5/32.Not a huge increase, but definitely noticeable going down the road. I can keep the jeep going straight down the road with one hand again.
Steering is still a little stiff at idle or when the engine is at idle and I am coasting making a turn, but feels almost stock going down the road.
I may drill out the outlet one step larger, we will see. Im going to buy some no4 machine washers and shim up the flow limiter to increase pressure first, since that is reversible.
The pump has quieted down alot too.

Got this in the mail too, gonna use it for an external trans filter. Need to figure out where to mount it. Are the soft sections of the stock trans lines 3/8 ID?

My Durango box was quite easy to turn with 31's I don't know what tires your running. The Dakota box I put in is a little stiffer and it has 1/4 turn more then the Durango box other wise it looks identical just sayin' but also I put a new used pump on it so maybe it could be that one is a bit tired the other one worked well nothing wrong with it except I broke the return line nubbin off and then I super glued it back on, big mistake lol! It was good for like 3 or 4 months and then it sprung a leak while driving and hit the exhaust manifold and caught my jeep on fire yes flaming jeep down the street. I'm glad I have a fire extinguisher in here. That was scary

I always thought it was kind of dumb to have the intake and exhaust on the same side, the exhaust will just hear up the intake right? So the plan for hero is that since I have to do the exhaust manifold gasket I'm going to make a heat shield to go in between them. I'm thinking cookie sheet! 4.3 comes up with some great ideas :)

I have been wondering this as well. I asked about heat wrap but the guys on here pointed out that could mold over. I think its a stupid design to have the intake and exhuast manifold interlaced. I have always wondered how hot the air is when it gets into the combustion chamber.

Saginaw boxes come in two sizes for both right and left hand drive vehicles. We have the small size. The Chevy PU box for instance is a larger box, but bolts on the wrong side. The Durango V8 box is the larger size that will interchange with ours, and the non V8 box is the same as ours

The trans filter is just a screen.

Coolant filters can help. Diesels use them, because their filters have the additives that the diesels need in the coolant.

The Trans filter in the pan is just a screen, like on an oil pump pickup. I bet its over 100 micron.
The filter I have on right now is a standard oil filter (21085, for 91+ Jeeps)and is rated at 25 micron. After like 5k I will change it for a true hydraulic filter rated at like 5 micron if I can find one that'll fit.
I might end up moving this to the drivers inner fender for more room.

I don't see a need for the coolant filter, just keep it clean and change it often.
Most of them are bypass filters and take forever to filter all of the fluid.
They also have the needed anti cavitation/anti rust/etc stuff in them for "wet sleeve" diesels.

With this compressor installed that means everything is new with the exception of the condenser and the evap. Matt put the evap in also from a 2000, and I really don't think it's the problem, but we'll see.

Got to get back on the XJ build....I had modified an older XJ fuel tank skid to work, but the modification "gap" bothered me...

http://i.minus.com/iTsKr4Pwxhofn.JPG

So I pulled the skid, and dug in my scrap bins...found an appropriate piece and cut it out with the HF portaband...

Wedged it in place..

A little flapwheel work, some flat black paint, and done! Did both sides, much happier with the modded skid now.

Last week I noticed a grinding noise fry the rear end. After driving it hard at the Vermont Overland trophy challenge, I want sure what to expect. Turns out one of the pads had written through ALL of the brake material.

I probably should have replaced the rotor too but instead just swapped out all the pads. Now it stops strong, doesn't pull and no more grinding!

Well finally went up in the attic above the garage to look and see if that's where I put the front skid. It was! Installed it, then went ahead and drilled the Dana 30 yoke out for the ubolts.

I spliced in adaptors for hooking up the stereo in my son's xj. The guy who removed the stereo from my son's old car, just cut all the old wires. The people at Crutchfield, where I ordered the adaptors told me that the color coding on the newer stereo units was all standardized now, I hope that is true, we're going to plug it and try it tomorrow.

Got to changing my water pump. Had a bit of a hiccup when removing the power steering pump and forgot how much getting the fan off sucks, so that and a couple non-jeep related problems slowed me enough to where i didn't finish. But the pump is on, along with a new thermostat (for those that remember my low temp issue, i finally got this done :D ), with both torqued, and finally a new lower heater hose. It was almost 10 pm then so i put my stuff up. Should finish tomorrow.

Aaahh, much better. Room to work now!

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-08-19195903-1.jpg

Found where, i guess an old, water pump had scored the #1 cylinder wall. The pump i took out didn't have any marks though, so i guess it isn't the original.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-08-19195839-1.jpg

The new pump was tougher to turn than the old one, which free spun. It doesn't hang up, just has a stiff kinda feeling. Is that normal for a new pump, like because of new seals or something?

I have changed a few water pumps but not on the Cherokee, yet at least. And I think the new ones were stiffer to spin than the old ones. So it sounds like a pretty hard job if things don't go smoothly at least. I hope this fixes all your running warm issues.

The last three I have done, two cheaper Dual head units, and a new Pioneer to go in the Explorer before the trip, that was exactly true, they have standardized.

Yesterday, i got the water pump replacement all buttoned up. And my temps are... worse. Now at idle it quickly climbs to 210, then slowly creeps to 220 when the fan cuts on. And i have no idea how but it still runs right at 160 when driving. :banghead: I put on the new water pump, inlet tube, lower heater hose, 180° thermostat, and a new belt. These things are :screwy: Ran great otherwise though.

I'm really sad that I don't get to post up in this thread much anymore.... so here's my sad story for today:

Today, I set yet another box of crap on it in the garage. It makes for a good place to keep my garage door opener that I bring in from my daily driver when I get home from work. Yet every day, I rub its header panel on my way in the house and tell it I'm sorry lol. I did get to pull it out of the garage this past weekend... so I could get to the shop vac on the other side of it lol. I let her run until she got to operating temp and sat in her the whole time to show her some love. I do miss driving it every day, but I'm saving so much money in gas that it almost evens it out.

Don't know how you feel about this but why not pick a day and drive it to work, say every two weeks or how much you feel like. Wouldn't make THAT much difference in fuel costs and keeps it from setting up too long. Had too many that sat and began to have enough problems they got neglected. Just a thought bro. ;)

had a DW around 30mph when driving over big hole on road. My boy helped turn steering wheels, we found:
- trackbar frame end have a play, but nut is tight enough. Suspecting ball joint like thing worn :(
- steering stabilizer bushing is worn, time to replace 3 year old steering stabilizer

rusty's adjustable track bar is $129, is it good for budget me?

I probably watch too much tv but if you live in the ghetto shouldn't there be a burned out hull of a car, plywood windows on the buildings. Shady looking rastafarian looking individuals casually exchanging goods from one hand to another all the while being shook down by cops driving a red and white torino looking for someone named "huggy bear". Oh and it does look like a police surveillance photo.

Lol, slightly different kind of ghetto here... although the vandalism to the pool area isn't in the photo, as well as the various drug deals I've seen go down around there. For a while, there was the tell-tale signal of sneakers tossed over a power line. They've since come down, but I have to admit that I have the local Sheriff non-emergency line on my speed dial lol. The neighborhood was built in '07 and was very nice back then. Then it all went downhill from there, and fast. I'm waiting for them to get more houses built (yes, it's been in development for that long) before I can sell our place.
