Got a quote to fix my subframe. $150 to cut this mess out and weld in some 1/8th inch plate.

I'm going to pull the bumpstop, receiver, and gas tank skid ahead of time, and redrill any mounting holes for the bumpstop or nut strip and reinstall a nutcert for the bumpstop if necessary. Pulling the skid & receiver will give me an excuse to replace the factory nutstrips with some I bought from JRC awhile back.

On a related note, I really hate you southern guys sometimes.

This is another Jeeper from a local club who does this as a side job. I couldn't many fab shops that wanted to touch it, and the few that were willing to talk to me quoted bare min $400 just to look at it.

I've seen his work before and it's pretty good. I think I got lucky because I had scratched out in the under coating where he'd have to cut to get to good metal, and offered to pull the bump stop, receiver, and gas tank skid ahead of time. All he has to do is cut, form, & weld.

I also started installing the KC lights I won last Nov. Most of the clips that hold the bumper on are broken, so I have to order some new ones before I mount the lights.

I finished installing the other 2 mud tires that I got for free with wheels a few months back. Had been running the two good ones on the rear since I had a couple of flats. Having the same size tires on the front sure helped the death wobble issue I have been fighting.

I think thats a vehicle modders lament ... when doing stuff. :D

I know I've done stuff that could always use a tweak later ... :bang:

X 3 on some mesh for the cooler ... maybe bolt it rather than weld it tho ?? - to make cleaning mud & gunk out, a bit easier.

I'm thinking expanded metal would get smashed fairly easy, 2"x1/4" steel slats might be a little more sturdy. Just my 2 cents

bigjim350

Depends on which expanded metal you get. The steel supply store down the road from me has expanded metal thats made out of 5/16 steel, aint too easy to bend that.

I know Rockauto.com well. I always, always, always use Advance Auto and sometimes O'Reilly's over the Autozone that's by me... but believe it or not they had the best price on that TRE. The Autozone by my old house in Ft. Worth was actually really awesome, and now one of my best friends is the manager there. But I don't feel like driving 4 hours to go there! LOL!

The Advance Auto by me has AWESOME customer service, a great selection, knowledgeable staff, and prompt service too! None of which are part of this AutoZone's repertoire. Yes, since they go all the way down to the bottom they will need to be cut. I think when I do the cut & fold, I'll be doing a back bumper that follows around the side kinda like this one (http://www.eriejeeppeople.com/ejpforums/index.php?showtopic=15148&view=findpost&p=150239). Maybe I'll integrate an outcropping that mates up with the flare cut so it doesn't look so ghetto.

Knowing how far my bushwackers go down the rear quarter panel I thought I'd ask to see how you were going to handle it. Oh another thing you could do would just put some JCR armor on there. I'm sure there are some other vendors that sell these, but JCR comes to mind. I bet you've already considered this though.

Actually I hadn't given it much thought. After seeing all the rot and how far back into the fender well it went, my first thought was to cut it all out. I could make that armor pretty easily I think. Once I see how the other side looks, I'll decide what to do.

Then drove Shelleys 96 for the first time in a while.
The difference between Renix and HO is huge, and hers actually has BRAKES. After driving for a couple weeks with no brake booster, I almost bounced my head off the steering wheel the first time I stopped. lol
I think Im gonna rebuild my 97 block and put a Renix head on it... Eventually.

NO WAY I dont buy crap, I was able to locate a Memphis Car Audio sub which was DVC 4ohm which is what I needed since my factory amo is only 2 ohms anyhow thats all audiophile jargon so on to the pictures

No I read a wright up from Cherokee forum on how to do the swap, I haven't hooked the ebrake up yet have to save up for the cables but its easy, the whole swap was if a person can change oil they can do this swap that's how easy it was..

Made three T-handled valve cover wrenches.(used 11mm deep socket). I had made one for myself awhile back. We visited my son and upon checking and finding his oil low, I went and got my t-handle to check his valve cover. I had gotten the kids all cheap socket sets(no deep sockets). Now, all 3 will have a T-handle next to the PDC so They or I can check the valve cover bolts when doing other engine checks.

Took a wheel off the 99 so I could remove a rotor. Need to measure it to see if I had composite or cast iron rotors. Seems the 1999 can be either! I measured it and it is composite. I took my old axle wheel bearing and held it up side by side to the 99 and it is identical, so I ordered the same Timken bearings I installed on my 1998.

RockAuto.com shows them shipped. I'll change out the Dana 30 axle u-joints at the same time of course. Pads and rotor looked good, but I might change them anyway. Once the bearings are changed that should get rid of the noise.

Doesn't seem to be causing a problem, but I want to replace them before they start leaning at a 45 degree angle like XJ4IV's did at one point. :D

Also adjusted the lower control arms on the 1998. Took me a while to figure out that without shims I needed to move the control arms all the way to the back and just use the adjustable control arms to adjust the length.

The old bearings sound like they have sand in them. The one remaining one I have from the 1998 that has 100k miles on it is smooth like the new Timkens.

Not sure what they did to these on the 99, maybe it's normal for 147k miles.

I also fixed my nearly fallen off tail light lense. 2 of the 3 bolt holes had broken off, and the 3rd had a huge crack in it. The little foot part was also broken off. A tube of epoxy & a donor piece from a broke tail light I found in the garage trash and it's stronger than the driver's which is still mint.

Ran across a good deal mid week on a NEW ARB air locker for a Chrysler 8.25, I was the only bidder.

I'm jealous Tony, neither of mine came with carrier bearings.

Changed out my front wheel hubs w/ bearings. I have a grinding noise when I do hard left or right turning as the tire rotates. I hope this fixes it!

Sourced a set of the Canyon rims from a friends 98 ZJ.. That way I can find me one more and have a matching set of 5 rims for the tires once I get back from my upcoming deployment.. Just need to pick them up once this trip is over...and find a decent set of tires to replace my Baja claws, or at least the front ones.. LOL

Pulled the tailgate trim and diagnosed the spongy feel in the latch action.

Nothing busted ... just the whole mechanism getting tired and worn.

So ..... no pics ... :p

....... Until I replace the lot with the spare one ... and also fit an extra, in cab, release lever .. ;)

Put in some new door speakers today. The old ones were a bit rough.

Measured ride height, from axle top to bottom of frame.

front:
10.6" driver and 10.5" passenger side.
rear:
10.6" driver and 10.6" passenger side.

above measurement means ~4" up front and 4.6" rear. Is it correct?

rear driveshaft extended (out) .75" and no vibe up to 50mph, due to traffic can't go faster this morning.

Factory Service Manual says in a section on suspensions that gives the factory's OFFICIAL measurements by the "dirty" method. For the benefit of anyone who is interested, here they are:

-------------------------------------------------------
Checking Front Ride Height

Measure front ride height with the vehicle unloaded (no luggage or passengers) and with the fuel tank full.

Place the vehicle on a level surface and measure the veryical distance between the top of the axle tube (A) and the underside of the frame sill (B). Refer to Figure 1 for driver's side measurement and Figure 2 for passenger side measurement. Be sure each measurement is taken from the top of the tube and not from the axle or shift motor housings.

With Standard or Soft Ride Suspension, vertical distance should be 17 cm (6-3/4 inches) plus or minus 13 mm (1/2 inch). With Heavy Duty Suspension, vertical distance should be 20 cm (7-3/4 inches) plus or minus 13 mm (1/2 inch).

Checking Rear Ride Height

Measure rear ride height with the vehicle unloaded (no luggage or passengers) and with the fuel tank full.

Place the vehicle on a level surface and measure the vertical distance between the top of the axle tube (C) and the underside of the frame sill (D) inboard of the jounce bumper (E).

With Standard or Soft Ride Suspension, vertical distance should be 15 cm (6 inches) plus or minus 13 mm (1/2 inch). With Heavy Duty Suspension, vertical distance should be 18 cm (7 inches) plus or minus 13 mm (1/2 inch).
