Donovan why don't you just do a great job of sanding it down and get yourself a quality paint gun and re-clearcoat it

well I scored a decent commision check last week so this week I ordered my third fan for the radiator... also ordered a new radiator...2 row aluminum!!!
JUST wrapped up an order from dirtbound for his fan shroud!
HOPEFULLY with all this and a new water pump and t-stat I can get the dang thing cooled off!... if this doesnt do it then I guess I got to open up the motor and start the rebuild:sign0181:

Well, I spent some time rubbing it... well, rubbing the tops of my fenders where somebody put some nasty black marks down both sides  GooGone worked fairly well I must say. Took a lot of effort though. And I ordered a bunch of parts from RockAuto:
Thermostat
Thermostat housing
Upper Rad hose
Lower Rad hose
Water pump
Coolant Temp Sensor
$85 shipped. Not bad at all.

From what I've read and who I've talked to. Stroking a 4.0 is a bust and a waste of lunch money. I for the longest time have been wanting to do it. But If I can't get 200K miles out of it, then funk it. Stupid ass expensive too

If you can assemble an engine it only costs about 1400$ ;) that's with all parts machine work including .030 overbore, decking block, line hone for bearings, new cam and cam bearings. And all new internal parts... All that and the numbers are 245 HP and 320 on torque... That's pretty much v8 numbers.. :)

Its been slow... Very slow. I waited 4 months for my machine shop to finish the work on my stroker and in that time I literally did nothing to my jeep it just sat in the driveway. But I finally got the engine sitting back in there and the trans bolted up now I just need to finish my long arm crossmember so I can put the trans back up and finish reassembling the engine bay.. oh and also finish welding my frame stiffeners on. But I have a little more free time but less money by taking a reduced role at work and going back to school so maybe someday in the next week ill have her driving around.

So here are the updates.
A 2 hour fight with the exhaust manifold that resulted in puting it on and taking it off 4 times and using a carbide to clearance some holes since apparently the new head is a little different in specs and they were both on then from there I aligned the torque converter with the flywheel and bolted, then I installed everything down to the throttle body. A short trip to the parts store for an oil filter antifreeze and a throttle body gasket I came back home and bored the throttle body and spacer some more. They are now installed the only thing left to install is the starter and the wiring to the alternator which has to wait since I can't find my starter bolts. Other than that its put the radiator on fill with oil.... And turn key
And since I have a buddy coming over that I'm shortening a drive shaft for I should have a camera man for the first start up!

Use the large vacuum line for the brake booster (removed from the booster side) to SLOWLY suck in a little at a time. Too much, and the engine will die. Make sure you're at operating temp first, obviously doing this while the engine is running. Let it sit for a good 10 min with the engine off after suckin 1/2 the bottle in. Fire it up and enjoy the smoke show!

Started mine up and moved it over to the "shop"

Started removing things and found a few more small issues so it looks like I gotta replace the hoses I thought were fine... small thing thank GOD, also found the bolt I lost over a year ago while performing a roadside thermostat replacement... it was SOMEHOW stuck between the A/C condenser and the radiator.
so to put it in perspective, last june I replaced the water pump and here it is now

they are on a switch right next to my starter button... turning the fans on and starting the jeep are one swift movement, and leaving em on is not an issue either since they sound like a jet engine when the motor is not running.

as a heads up ... this is a feeble attempt at cooling a motor that has 300k miles on it, that of which I'm about 98% sure the head gasket is blown so IF i still have cooling issues then its due to the head gasket, as of right now the ONLY thing not replaced in the whole cooling system is the heater core and the head gasket. Im not worried about the heater core at this point as Ive NEVER had an issue with that and the head gsket is going to have to wait till I can buy a new head and all the other parts needed for a full rebuild on the motor.

well today I decided that , yes , the steering needs some attention as well so I read about thirty pages on Pirate4x4 about doing hydro assist and I built the confidence in the "how to" aspect of drilling and tapping for hydro assist.
so last night I removed the gear box and drained it all out, today I took it to the shop and sandblasted the housing
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-06121342.jpg
next I mustered up enough confidence to start drilling, pilot holes are made
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-06124625.jpg
and now tapped the holes
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-06130400.jpg
SO your wondering HOW this works, and I checked everything out as for the direction of PS fluid , here is a diagram that shows all the ports while going straight and turning left and turning right.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/PSoildistribution.jpg
after reading through pirates threads Ive found that the saginaw gear box pressurizes up to 1400PSI and the rams Im looking at are around 3000 rated so were in great shape for a hydro assit on the cheap.. muddy you may now pick apart my cheap upgrade!

tore apart the whole steering gear box, replaced input shaft seals and pitman arm seals and washers installed the steering gear box, filled the radiator noticed the power steering pump reservoir... the brand spanking new one... was loose on the housing... apparently the clips to hold the reservoir in em were not up to par so I had to remove em and bend em back a tad and then put a retaining screw in em...
put that all back together, started installing power steering lines... decided those could stand a replacement as well so called ALLLLL local parts stores and NOBODY has em til tuesday sooooo again twiddling thumbs waiting... I TOTALLY wanted to go wheelin today!86* today for the high..... 20 degrees cooler than yesterday!

Spent quite a bit of time putting on a new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing, coolant temp sensor, upper and lower hoses. I manually flushed out every individual part of the system as I went along and so far I'm pleased with the clarity of the water. So far. Also, while I was in there, I noticed just how bad my belt was looking, so I made a trip up to the parts store and got a new one. "Since I'm already in there", right? Anyways... got everything back together and started it with heater full blast, burping as much as I could as I went along and crap... leak around the t-stat housing. Tightened those bolts some more, checked again and it's still leaking. Finally re-seated the upper hose and the heater hose and got that leak to go away. Temp got up to 210* and stayed there! I left it running for about 10 minutes as I took my time putting some tools away still at 210. I turned off the heater and let it run some more while I washed my hands getting ready for a test drive, and it crept above 210*, but never to the next mark like it was. Drove it on a loop (u-turn to u-turn on the access road) about 8 times and it stayed above 210* but never hit the next mark. The real test will be sustained highway driving around 70-80 mph, but so far I'm.... not unhappy with the results. However, I am happy that I got it done myself and got it all back together and it's not leaking or blowing up :D I really need to get that OBDII bluetooth adapter so I can read actual temp. My hood wasn't as hot as it normally is, so maybe my needle is off because of the new sensor.

as a heads up ... this is a feeble attempt at cooling a motor that has 300k miles on it, that of which I'm about 98% sure the head gasket is blown so IF i still have cooling issues then its due to the head gasket, as of right now the ONLY thing not replaced in the whole cooling system is the heater core and the head gasket. Im not worried about the heater core at this point as Ive NEVER had an issue with that and the head gsket is going to have to wait till I can buy a new head and all the other parts needed for a full rebuild on the motor.

Just have the head looked at by a machine shop to see if it can be milled. If not clearwater cylinder heads makes a pretty decent replacement head. For about $500. Also if you choose to rebuild most will suggest have the bore checked, and only going to .030 over bore. Also have the block line honed because its a common problem with these blocks for the line hone not to be true causing premature bearing wear.

Jimbo's right. That's my tensioner pulley. Nice and easy to get to. I did find that the bracket that that pulley is on (also attaching the power steering pump and water pump) is a bit of a PITA when trying to get the water pump in and out. I loosened the 3 bolts on the PS pump and removed the bolt attaching the whole thing to the block so that I had about an inch more room to wiggle the new water pump behind the bracket.

took the jeep down the road... I let it idle for about 20 minutes to let the cooling system warm up a bit to give it a true test....
well the power steering setup works fine... no more leaks get same crappy turning radius so can't wait for the ram!
as for the cooling system I JUST replaced... I noticed that a few of the water pump bolts are loose and three or four pin hole leaks from the mating surfaces so before I crank those bolts down I wanna replace the bolts... Ive broken too many bolts in heads to have this happen again so that being an issue im replacing those bolts... I also think there is some air in the system as well...

Front tires are cupping pretty bad, so I rotated them. Not sure why they have started doing this.

The cargo mat came in right before going to Matt's to swap the engine, so I drilled some holes in it to be able to mount the mountaineer rack back in there.

Then while driving the Jeep to get a hamburger I noticed that the transfer case handle was limp. Had a look and it had just popped out of the pivot point.

532

While I was checking that I noticed this though.... Seems like there should be something connected to this?

Cupping tread would be a sign of tire pressure, I think.... not so much alignment. Now if you had uneven wear, or feathering...that would definitely be due to an alignment. But cupping i'm pretty sure is pressure related.
My T-case linkage was a PITA to get dialed in after the lift....even tried one of those linkage drop bracket thingys.... i used to have to crawl under there to get it back into 2WD, ...so i've had to pop that linkage in & out so many times I 've lost count. Its good now, just took an afternoon, and someone else sitting in the jeep to work the lever. But that linkage WILL pop back into place relatively easily, just hit it with a squirt of PB blaster or WD40, and use a small pry bar or panel popper to push it back into that grommet.

nickxj94

Cupping is mostly tires out of balance and lack of rotation, or worn shock or springs but mostly tires being out of balance for a long period of time.

My little gromet/plastic thing that goes in the bracket hole is gone. So pretty much every time I want to switch to/from 4wd i have to get underneath to ensure is in the slot for the pivot point.

Thanks. I currently have the Jeep cup holder modified to fit the same position.

http://i649.photobucket.com/albums/uu215/warriorsuspension/IMG_0268-1.jpg

Will it hold something besides a pop can?

I usually have a 32 oz soda cup in there, just don't let it get knocked around or it'll be a pool party in your floorboard. The XJs that came with it have some slats cut into the console so it slips in, you'll have to cut those out to make it fit.

I had the same fear... just tell her that she should have the newer car cause that way she won't have to worry about repairs, if she starts to argue that just remind her off all the time you have been spending "working" on the jeep!... worked in MY divorce!

hey blue just a heads up you can do a conveyance of property which means you "sell" your jeep to another person, the other person has to pay taxes on it when they put it in their name and once the divorce is over... you and your pal reverse the transaction... best thing though is to do this with someone you can 100% trust with returning it back to you! I had to do this with my durango while I was going through my divorce, I "sold" it to my mother than after the divorce was finalized...mom and I went to county tax office and swapped the title back... its a little expensive but it SURE beats buying and modifying a WHOLE other jeep! as long as you don't owe the EX any money as court ordered then your good to go this route!

well yesterday I decided that my lighting situation on my trailer SUCKS!!! so I went to Carquest and went on a "quest" for slim lights that were cheap and easy to replace in the event I damage them loading or unloading the jeep,
first idea was this when my jeep would fit onto the rails and NOT hang over the sides
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.20.15_zps93a30e75.jpg

as you can see... once I put the axles under along with adapters and 37's... those lights didnt have a chance!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.22.40_zps4498adf5.jpg

Then I decided to go the cheapy route and get these magnetic ones from Harbor freight...
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.21.59_zps9b7a36bf.jpg

not a bad idea cept when Im in a hurry to go wheelin!!!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.22.56_zps10343780.jpg
I was backing off the trailer a little too fast and sent this guy flying and landed under the tilt of the trailer... Ooops
so that all being said/shown this is my latest version of what I HOPE to be success
I bought these side marker lights for 18 wheelers as they have cheap and fast replacements at 2.62 per lens which includes two bulbs in a "sealed" housing
the brackets that bolt to the trailer were a little on the hefty side of 7.50 each but again THESE guys SHOULDN'T break since the lens covers the bracket.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.23.11_zps611b2fb6.jpg
all wired up!!!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.51.23_zps29c5f004.jpg
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/2012-09-15%2013.52.07_zps62375413.jpg

then I realized HOW the wiring was done for the "kit" I bought... the brake light and the turn indicator were the same wire... meaning with my setup shown here... the amber lights light up when I hit the brakes... so I had to order another pair of red lenses but again... 2.50 each aint bad!

I must of have had a brain fart when i bought it cause i got a Duralast.:bang::crazy::bang: Hope it lasts long enough to get it down, then i'll most likely swap it for a better one. Not sure what brand the one i took out but i put it in 'bout 5 years back. Not bad. Didn't have enough time to put the new top rad hose on.

Oh yeah, need to get some heater hose to replace the one from the t-stat housing.

And i'm tired of dealing with a dead battery so i'm on the lookout for the best deal on an Optima blue top. The best I've found was Advance with 15% off and $50 certificate for future business. If you need a temporary battery, I can talk to my softball buddy at work who is the parts manager at one of my stores. The certified pre owned cars get a new battery whether it needs it or not, so they may have a few laying around that are good. Don't know what they would charge if anything at all and it may not be a perfect match but it'll work.
Let me know if you want me to talk to him., text me or pm me so I get your reply sooner. I don't get to check the forum very often at work lately.

Shyea, those blue tops have gotten INSANE. Had 2 in my boat, went to replace them this year, also about 7 years old. Needless to say, I found a better battery. Intersate SRM17 IIRC. about half the price and just as much battery. Will it last 7 years? IDK, but I'm going to find out!

Also, Costco had a decent price on them, still $175'ish i think.

:DI bought my Jeep on Wednesday, since then I've:

Degreased and powerwashed the engine bay and under carriage
Pulled the drooping headliner
Scrubbed every inch of the interior (previous owner was a smoker)
Replaced the air filter
Changed the oil and oil filter
Replaced the spark plugs
Replaced the cap and rotor
CORRECTLY grounded the battery
Removed 2 wasp nests
Installed the aux radiator fan
Replaced the valve cover gasket
Replaced all the exterior lights that didn't work
Installed a horn
and Cleaned the throttle body

It's been a busy few days - I'm ready to go back to work so I can relax! :D

Said the heck with the bench build of the 8.25 and pulled the 4.10 D35 from my XJ, and swapped in the 3.55 8.25 with matching junkyard driveshaft.

Had to pull the rear shocks, they were monroes, and just too short for the 8.25.

Reinstalled the front drive shaft that has been out of the XJ basically since day one, and finally shifted the NP231 out of 2HI .......IT WORKS!!!!!!:gitrdun:

And for the 1st time since I bought this XJ over 18 months ago, shifted to 4LO and crawled a ditch:D...

No I can start buying parts in earnest!

Saturday; msmoorenburg came by and we...

fixed oil leak, found another, fixed it (main front seal was bad).
replaced thermostat with 160 degree, and found that the 195 was actually hitting the inside of the housing. Lucky it wasn't enough to crack the housing when tightening it down!

Checked compression on all cylinders. Same across the board. I think we couldn't get the rented gauge seated properly, 150 psi.

4,100 rpm limit on the new engine...
disconnected valve cover lines from intake/airbox. Same 4,100 limit.
swapped a ECU from Matt's 97, same 4,100.
removed downstream O2 sensor, seemed to raise and change how the 4,100 limit acted. Matt did notice that it wasn't heating up as bad. It was getting late in the day, I was really sleepy (4am bed time), so I told him I would drop exhaust system and try breaking the 4,100 limit Sunday.

Sunday;

Replaced the radiator in the 99 with the single core radiator that I recently took out of the 98. I guess it's about 6 months old. I don't think the old one was band, but I think it was full of rust, at least in the bottom.

I know the one from the 98 was clean.

After that I dropped the exhaust on the 98, removed the donut, but it back together, leaving a 1/8 to 1/4 inch gap. Cranked it up, whoa! that's loud!

http://youtu.be/4Y4hU_ctXYk

And guess what? No more 4,100 rpm barrier! Went up to 4,800 rpm and shifted into 2nd. Tried it twice, no mistake. Something is restricting the exhaust.

I have one in the back seat of the 98. Took it to the muffler shop to be installed. They did a "flow test" on the one in there, said it was fine. :smiley-whacky119:

Usually magnesium helps me when my exhaust is backed up....
But on a serious note, are you thinking of replacing the whole exhaust system or cutting it up until you find the section blocked? It won't look pretty that way, but it'll work. On the other hand, shiny new pipes/cat/muffler under the Jeep sounds pretty good too :D

Threw the beds on top,

Strapped in the passengers ....

I just ordered a muffler and some clamps. They'll be in tomorrow. Then the sawzall comes out. First I'll remove the cat and see if I can see any damage.

I have a one of those metal lines that you use to pull wires through walls. Can't remember the name. Anyway I'll push that through the pre cat pipe and check for blockages.

Worse case is I'll cut out the muffler and check the tailpipe. Right now I'm just planning on replacing the cat and muffler, we'll see what I find.

I don't think it's the cat since it isn't getting really hot. The muffler is getting hotter, but 100 degrees. 450 and 550. After an hour drive.

Hey Muddy, don't know why i didn't think of this before. I've heard of cats breaking up and the material going downstream to plug up the muffler. Since you're replacing the muffler that would be fixed either way. Man, sure hope this gets resolved soon for ya. I'm sure you've had just about enough of these problems.

You know I was thinking that this may be the case. That would explain why the pseudo flow test the muffler guy did passed.

made a map holder(from an old tractor inner tube) for the cherokee. I used a tractor inner tube because the rubber is thicker and holds its shape better. I cut a piece one foot by one foot, fold it in half and put the maps in. it fits nice between the passenger seat and center console.

bad luck

OK Shane. The base cup holder is the Jeep version that goes on the console and screws down under the lid. You can get the base holder from Quadratec. I cut the bottom skirt off with a hack saw flush with the bottom of the part that holds the cup. The base holder is designed for pop cans or XLarge fountain cups. The extensions can be made from a short piece of PVC or ABS 3" pipe and the fitting for it. I left room for coffee cup handles.

I took Muddy's and msmoorenburg's advice and moved my power wires from my battery to my relay box.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1161.jpg

I even got out my file and filed a notch for the cables to sit in so I could put the cover back on.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1163.jpg

THEN, I think I found the reason (HOPEFULLY the only reason) why my rear wiper hasn't worked since I bought the Jeep. I'm only about 2 years late checking that out. Gotta try to hunt down a new switch for cheap. This one was nice and broken.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1164.jpg

All in all a nice day to do yard work and some light work on the Jeeps. Felt great outside and my wife made chocolate chip pumpkin cookies :D Might have to fire up the coffee maker and enjoy my Sunday now!

Changed oil in the 98. So this is the first oil change after 500 break in miles.

My upper control arms were set 1/4" out too far, so I spent 2 hours adjust that 1/4" out. Geez!

I have spark plugs, cap, and rotor, but screw it, I'll do that later.

Still getting the P1391 randomly.
