Mudderoy
07-22-2011, 10:50 AM
Well as already stated in another thread, I tested the new radiator yesterday on the highway. 75 to 80 mph for 16 miles and it got a tad above 210. Ran cool like a cucumber "a RED cucumber!" as soon as I slowed to 65. Actually it was still pretty cool at just over 210. It didn't smell hot.

Now what I need to do is get it to drive smoother. I think a SYE and new tires will do it. It drove fine at 80 mph but it was loud and full of vibes.

I did notice that my vacuum pressure is pretty low at that speed. I guess the engine is just heavily loaded at that speed and rpm.

I'm hoping the 33" tires will help the rpms a bit.

Had to put my drivers side door back on to roll up the rear windows. Took it back off and cut a tarp down to size so it will just cover the front doors to keep rain out. Finished rear bar. Washed mud out of rear brakes, cleaned under car mud and cleaned engine bay. Glasshouse Mountain mud is more like brickies mud, it is sandy and dries like rock. It striped the rear brake shoes, they are toast.

The impeller on mine simply was eaten away, and it was only 2 to 3 years old at the time. :(

Surprisingly, the impeller in my old one looked 100% intact, just dirty. It did, however, spin very freely, almost would free spin 2 revolutions if I just spun in. the new one is much stiffer. So far, no leaks and everything is good. I put just water in it right now with a cleaner so in a few days I'll flush it all out again and fill with some coolant/water and be good to go.

I did something I thought I would never do. I have got to stop saying that. :rolleye0012: I added GPS to my Jeep. I got a droid phone a few months ago to use as an internet car because it was cheaper and we live out in no mans land. Then I started finding apps that were all sorts of fun. Since it had GPS built in, I down loaded an off road topographical capability to the GPS. Then I got a car mount for it so I can easily see it while driving. This will be really cool when we go to Fordyce. There are some trails that go out on bare granite that if we don't find any signs prohibiting it, we will continue on. Here is a pic of it displaying Ishi Road, which I have posted on this site. It shows it as only a trail

Between cleaning up the garage looking for the extra set of t-case drop parts and the work on the 98, I was working in the garage from 4pm to 12:30am.

Installed missing t-case drops
Replaced rear tcase seal
Replaced notched speedo unit seal
Completed 90% clean up on the garage
Re-installed the transmission cooler, and poked a tiny hole in the process. (I didn't hook it up to the transmission for obvious reasons)
Added some BAW to the drop pitman arm and over torqued it to get rid of the steering slop

I didn't get the extended stainless steel rear brake line installed :(

The temps here dropped below 100 today. It was 90 and cloudy. It felt so good, I decided to work on the Jeep!

I installed a new aux electric fan. The old one was beyond shot. Now, it never makes it to 210, even sitting idling with the A/C on.

Chased down a vacuum line problem. Now, my cruise control works! Yayyy!!

Replaced a leaky pinion seal on the rear axle. Gawd, I hate the smell of gear oil!!

Repaired a leak in the A/C condenser and then drove over to my buddies so he could pull a vacuum on the system to see if my redneck repair worked. It did, he charged 'er back up and now I've got ice cold air. Hallelujah!!!!!

Oh, then I threw in a set of those rubbery pan type floor mats to contain the mud I plan on tracking in there.

Later this week will be the Hidden Hitch, fuel tank skid plate, and stereo.

Still trying to decide on a lift. Probably won't do that myself. I don't have the space in my shop and I don't want it down any longer than a day. Probably take it to a buddies house for that. Lockers? Well, that depends on if I decide to keep the D35 or do an upgrade. Gears? Same deal. Thinking of going to 3.73's with my 5-spd and 31" noodle slingers. Not sure yet.

Well, gotta hook some trailers together and get outta Dallas. Heading home to drive my Jeep around with A/C!! That makes me happy.

Hopefully it'll stay warmer through the night after the rain we're supposed to get this weekend moves off. One of my next projects is going to get some metal tubing and some canvas to make some storm doors to keep in the back. Just throw them on when it gets a little nippy and pull em off when the suns up.

Moved the front tires to the back and the front to the back rotating in the spare.

I feel like a beat puppy. That heat and my moderate activity don't mix!

One of the locking lug nuts wouldn't come off. I had to notch it with my cut off wheel and us a large hunk of metal as the blade of a screwdriver to get it out. That added a good hour to the fun.

I swapped them because i'm getting a pretty good shake at 51 mph, which means the MTs have worn uneven and need to be re-balanced. Normally I'd just take it up to NTB and have them rotate and balance but since I'll be getting some new tires soon I thought I'd spend the 45 minutes and do it myself. Well not balancing but rotating.

Measured the door openings and picked up some really cheap plastic pipe (10' for a buck!) got about 30' of it. Going to cut it down and try it out as a tube door template. I want to get it set up right before I put the money into the steel tubing. If it works out I'm going to use some square tubing for the door frame and put some canvas over most of it. With a plastic or plexiglass window so I can drive with it in. But that will only be when it;s raining. Otherwise the doors stay off!

The DayStar I purchased for mine were too big. Using a Dremel tool I made them fit, but even then they would come out if I pushed on the end, so I drilled some holes and put screws in there to hold it in. Nothing massive just to hold it in place so they didn't fall out.

My OEM fell out, the other one pulled out. I don't like the design of this. I would recommend a good glue and screws. I think the longer ones will have more of a tendency to get knocked out when they hit the coil springs.

Replaced my CPS today. That's what has been causing all my problems with stalling and sputtering that some of you probably remember me posting about before when I thought my fuel pump was going out. Well, turns out the "former idiot" replaced it a couple months before he sold it to me, but didn't route the wire so it was away from the exhaust... needless to say it burned the sheathing off, and everytime it grounded out, like when I would turn left for example, it would kill the engine. Here's what was left of it when I pulled it out.

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj289/toebee97/338943_267424019936754_100000074732710_1143778_780 4932_o.jpg

I changed out my spark plugs today.... Opinions on how they look? What i was looking for is what Matt told me to look for, one that was much cleaner than the others due to water leaking into the chamber... Dont think any of them stand out more thatn the others.
The farthest right one is the front, number one cylinder.

I replaced the motor TWICE.:bang:
Well not in one day of course but over the last two weeks.
Getting my original motor out was what took me the longest (1 week)since I had never done it.
Then the 1st motor I put in was no good so I took it back and brought another one home and put that one in which was good.
All that's left to do is put the front end and hood back on.
Oh and flush the motor and oil change.

Eventually I'm probably going to get some sheet metal to fill in the holes. Had to trim a couple slots out of the stock covering, but they fit pretty good. I havn't been able to get the angle exactly right. They are straight for normal driving but when I hit the high beams the angles are way off. For now they are acceptable and I like the way they look.

lets us know what you think of that little mod in a few days......:)

Honestly, I have not noticed any change at all. I have the K&N cold air intake put in. I could tell a small difference with it when I first put it in but haven't noticed any change with the spacer. I've been off work the past couple days (PTO this time :D thankfully it wasn't furloughed) so I haven't been driving as much. I'll let you know if I do notice anything later in the week. I came across a post yesterday, but can't remember where, that said some people were having their throttle stick after installing spacers. I've not run into that either so I don't know if it's just a brand thing ( not sure how it could be that though) or if the spacer was a taller one. This one is an inch tall. I don't think I'm going to see any change until I do a little more to the intake system. Planning on moving the filter into the cowl, to get it away from the heat of the engine and to free up space. (I should of done this to begin with and saved the money from the K&N setup!) And I also want to get a bored out throttle body. Right now, I wouldn't recommend getting one of these spacers. It was just over $40 bucks if I remember right. If you could find one for about half that price it may be worth a shot. Hope this helps.

It holds pressure real great til it gets boiling and then boils. I think my thermostat and possibly water pump may need replaced along with a new radiator. The radiator is wet down the passenger side plastic tank. Only for a short period of time though as it evaporates quickly. Looks like a none home game football saturday will be my next day to make it up there aside from thursdays which I have off every week

Thought I would do a little mod to the chimsl (Center High Mounted Stop Lamp, it's sad that I actually remember that) I was doing a search on Google for a cover or a decal that would just have Jeep lit up. I couldn't find anything except on ebay. So I started thinking about just getting some stencils and painting the light. Then I thought, just get some of those cheap sticker letters in the arts and crafts section of Wally world and paint over them. Turned out pretty well, I just did two quick coats. I actually didn't have any black paint yesterday so I just used truck bed coating. I put the second coat on before the first one was dry. Then peeled the stickers off with tweezers so I wouldn't smudge them with my finger. It's a whole lot easier to get them out while the paint is still wet than waiting for it to completely dry and peeling up some of the paint with em. Here's a pic of it after the paint was dry.

I'm not to hot on the rims and sorta sad that traded my Grizzley's. But I've got plenty of other sets of rims in the garage to remount the tires on.

Got pulled over for a license bulb being out and found out that the @$$hat "salesman" I bought it from messed up the paperwork and the car is registered to me but in a town I have never lived in about 50 miles away. But on the bright side the cop was actually decent and tomorrow I pick up the rest of my lift kit (and change a bulb)
