Started out using the Jeep to haul off some logs from a tree we cut down. Got bored with that and started playing.....

Same battery I was going to put in my XJ, when the battery died... but unfortunately none of the local auto parts stores had any of the Optima batteries of any series in stock... So went with a AGM battery from Sears, which has pretty good reviews, especially for Jeeps and offroad use.. So we'll see how it goes!!!

I got some new parts today. New 33 spline G2 axles for my Dana 44 with the correct disc brake retainers. I learned the hard way that there is a difference when going from drum to disc. I still have the set for drum brakes all ready to go. Bearings are pressed on, ready to install. I might keep them, and look for another 44 rear for an XJ and just hang onto it for another project. I also got some cool new linkage for my transfer case. I got it here www.azzysdesignworks.com My hood louvers should show up this week as well. I got them from http://rodlouvers.com/

Yeah, that Sears AGM is a great battery. It's made by Odyessy / Energy Systems, so it should do very well.

When I bought my battery it was the only one that came in yesterday, and the counter guy was going to buy it. That is, until I came along. He bought the Odyssey and told me that most of the off roaders were switching to that battery. It's supposed to be one of the best.
Does the AGM have a gel type filling inside?

No, AGM is not the same as a Gel filled battery... it is Absorbed Glass Mat. I have read mixed reviews as to which is better then the other... But as the Optima was not an option for me at the time I needed one, I went ahead and figured I'd give the AGM Sears battery a try, since it is supposedly just as good as the Odyssey battery (as it is made in the same factory and line/process as they are)... not to mention found a few battery boxes I like that are built for the Odyssey battery, adn this one works in it as well... so that is a huge plus for me... figure it's worth a try, as I know Optima's quality has been in decline in recent years... so I know the current ones arent' the same as the one I bought many years ago, that held up for so long!!

The Optima batteries were the best in the business, made by Johnson Control. The auto shop I worked at use to sell them. (it's a family owned parts store, and not a chain), however, that company started having their batteries made overseas, and we saw a big rise in warranty issues, so the shop ended up dropping the Optima line. Maybe they have gotten their quality control issues sorted out. The shop then started selling Exide batteries, but then they moved their production to Mexico. The shop now sells East Penn batteries which are made in the USA. They offer an AGM battery as well. The shop can order the Odyssey batteries for customers, but they are not cheap. For my jeep and my boat, I use an AGM battery, they seem to hold up better, and last longer. I think you will be very happy with the Sears AGM. Just keep your paperwork handy in case you have issues and need to warranty it.

Changed my rear wheel bearings.

The passenger side started coming apart after about 6-7 pulls on the slide hammer. The driver side started squealing like a baby piglet a few days ago. Turns out it was packed with grease and when I started to pull it, it blew apart on the second pull.
http://i781.photobucket.com/albums/yy96/herein97217xj/DSC00535_zpsen6gzmur.jpg (http://s781.photobucket.com/user/herein97217xj/media/DSC00535_zpsen6gzmur.jpg.html)
So I got everything back together, fresh bearings in place. But I still had a problem.

The clips and pin were the wrong size and I had to put the old ones back in.

Took the Jeep down a trail I never should have tried. Ended up having to winch myself for an hour to get to a dead end. There was no way I was going back that way. So I blazed my own trail through the woods. Everything was going ok, plenty of new scratches and everything. Then I saw two trees close together. "I can make it between those, no problem." Instead of my jeep making the trees a little wider, they made the jeep a little thinner. Made it home though. And to think this happened after ive quit drinking (1 month today!)

Got the 33's and "new" rims mounted & balanced yesterday, and attempted to install them, but needed different lug nuts... So drove it to Pep Boys to pick up new lug nuts, but was unable to swap them out...

Drove it to End of Summer show & shine meet put on by local Jeep club I'm a member of... Wasn't going to bother doing the show portion, just enjoy the meet & greet and spending time with awesome folks.. But since it was only $5 that went back to the club... figured what the heck... Won Best Cherokee (not too shabby for a first event she's been too, and certainly not the last)!! Hopefully the next event will see my 33's installed, and hopefully even a few other parts!!

Drove to middle PA yesterday and picked up a rear bumper w/ carrier to throw on the Yeti... Not the one I ordered 8 months ago (same exact design except for mine was supposed to have the cutouts for flus mount LED's.. and this one was the first concept built by the same company)... Going to pull it out of the back seat of my Ram here in just a bit, as well as spray some PB Blaster a few times on the factory bolts...

Finally got the third brake light cover painted... and the remembered another piece that I needed to coat. Been trying to catch the humidity down and for weeks I've waited. Hopefully its still down enough Monday. Anyways here is some pics of the progress.

The main piece...

8371

The face plate...

8372

And a comparison of the cover panel and the top interior trim panel. It was the closest color I could find and I think it matches well. Had to paint the trim panel too, a bit of primer overspray got on it.

8373

And the other day I entered a photo contest on Bleepin Jeeps FB page and couldn't believe I actually won. "Your jeep with a fork" was the theme. And this is the pic that won. "Shortcut through cafeteria" I call it... :P

8374

And the prize... Factor 55 Flatlink. Fine piece of equipment. Never thought I could afford one. Now I don't have too :D... just need a winch to put it on. :hmmmm2:

8375

Oh, and washed it. Had to get the barbecue sauce of the door... still has a hint of the smell though. Who wants to grill?!?!

And started to flush/reverse flush the heater core (it was definitely clogged up, so will continue flushing/back flushing it today and see if I can get it flowing more then I was able too yesterday..) If not then it'll be the next thing on the list to replace (really looking forward to it) and will try to figure out a way to splice the two heater lines together to bypass the heater core until I can replace it.. Had to go and find a bushing for the pin on the bottom of the radiator, otherwise I would have gotten the radiator installed again yesterday.. Going to another AZ today to see if they might have a bushing if not, will find something else that'll work the same, and hopefully get her all back together today!!

Finished installing the new radiator, water pump, T-stat, HD fan clutch and new hoses.. Took it for a quick test drive, and realized that there was some clearancing to be done for the HD fan clutch, unfortunately didn't know this needed to be done, until it was all back together and there was no real room to work.. but managed to make due and bend the stupid bar that connects the upper and lower frame of the radiator (and didn't punch a hole in the new radiator, which is certainly good!!)!!! Also managed to clean some of the grunge the PO allowed to collect on the inner fenders as well as the side and under the hood (still got plenty more to clean under there)..

Also spent another hour and a half flushing & back flushing the heater core... (I have heat (finally)... Hopefully it continues to work...).. If not, then I guess I'll be doing heater core.. It was certainly clogged when I started yesterday with the flushing/back flushing, cause I could just bearly get any kind of water or air to flow through the core, once I got done it was flowing pretty well and free..

And since I just thought to check the tracking number for my 62mm TB, found out it was delivered today.. (well technically yesterday now, since it's 0235).. anyways... so that is what I'm starting today off with I guess... Is receiving my "new" TB... Now, I have to think if I want to install it or not today, as I'll be going back over to the "shop" and working on a few more items on it, after getting a couple hours of sleep.... (adjusting the sway bar disconnects correctly, wiring in the license plate light(s) for the JCR relocation bracket, checking coolant fluid level @ cold temp (and whatever other odds and ends job comes to mind while I'm there working on her...)

Went over and checked the coolant levels again today, still looking good, and the ground underneath it is still dry (amazing feat for a Jeep)... Tried to adjust the JKS sway bar disconnects, but they for some reason won't turn in enough to adjust the bar to the proper angle... so guess I'll be ordering a new set of those shortly.

Just got done filing my complaint with the BBB for the company that I ordered my rear bumper from 7 months ago. I really didn't want to have to do that, and tried every avenue I could to contact them and work something out either getting the bumper shipped out to me or getting my money refunded... and they decided they didn't want to play ball or be helpful... so I went to the next resort I have. Am still going to contact the state police as I hear they have a fraud department that will pursue that kind of matter... Was going to call local police and see if maybe them knocking on the door will help... but since it's in PA, and the local police (Township police) are usually buddy buddy with most of the people in the township, figure they probably know the owners of the company an edit might just cause more issues then it would any good.. so think I'll go through the BBB and see what I can do with the state police..

pulled the battery, going for another in a few minutes.. I even unplugged my CB :(

Finally finished the paint on the 3rd brake light cover assembly. Everything on the inside is satin black (only seen through the rear), and the outside is a grey to match the interior (viewable from the interior). My main goal was for it to look factory.

Here's the main cover panel...

That sucks that you have to go through all that just get something for your money. I recently had something somewhat similar happen with an electrical outlet adapter to hook my welder up to a dryer outlet. Ordered the pigtail and 3 weeks later it still hadn't arrived even though they said it would take 2 weeks max. I tried calling and emailing multiple times with no luck, but luckily I used Paypal to purchase and so I filed a claim with them to get my money back. Less than 24 hours later I get an email from the company apologizing for the delay and had it shipped that day. I will be sure to use Paypal whenever it's an option from now on.

Renewed the registration for another year!! I'm pretty happy about this, because I've been worried about it going through inspection with the CEL randomly popping up, and with having the LED headlights (that are not DOT approved)... But got an email stating it did not require an inspection, and that I could renew it online now... So I hurriedly jumped on that, and took care of it, before they change their minds!! LOL

Now if I can just get that lucky with my Ram (which is far newer, so would think it'd be no inspection as well)!!

Got the trailer light wiring harness in the mail today, along with the pigtail that I plan on using to hook the light for the JCR plate relocation bracket to the trailer harness, for now... so I can drive her at night again!!

Last night into this morning, I installed the Plug-N-Play trailer wiring harness I ordered. Then took a 4 pin pig tail to go from the trailer harness to wire in my license plate light, and wired it all together and then wrapped everything in wire looming, to give it a clean look. Installed my windshield banner, that has been waiting to go on for over a year. Did some more cleaning on her and then drove her home, so I can drive her to work over the next couple of days and see how she does.. She'll definitely need to see some re-gear love in the coming bit, that is for sure.. But other then that she seems to be putting out some good heat (so am happy my flush/backflush of the heater core seems to be working well enough)..

Still got a CEL, but now it isn't flagging for the coolant temp sensor, so guess the old water pump was either not putting out very much flow, or the t-stat was messed up or something, cause that is the only things I changed out was the T-stat, water pump, radiator, and then flushing/backflushing the heater core, and it seems to have taken care of the coolant temp sensor fault).. I tried to replace the other O2 sensor, that I haven't replaced since I got the Jeep... but it is stuck in there good... So for now will just leave it alone, but will bel looking for a new header to replace my cracked one, and a new downpipe anyways, so then I'll just put the new O2 sensor on the new downpipe...

Took the new jeep to Jiffy Lube to get safety and emission inspections done. Didn't pass for some small reasons, 3rd brake light is out, no reverse lights, something leaking in the back and i didn't put the mud flaps on. Now I've got something to do this weekend. :)

Also a day or two ago i fixed the exhaust which had completely broken off at q bad weld after the muffler. Used some autozone exhaust wrap stuff with some wire to hold it together (which actually worked quite well). But now it doesn't sound nearly as good which makes me sad. I wonder if i could get away with dumping the exhaust before the axle...

BlackYeti
10-16-2015, 12:29 PM
What did they nail you for leaking in the back?

I got questioned by a couple of inspection places about my bumper. Supposedly you have to have 4" of bumper height all the way across. Yeah I uh,... well technically i have almost a foot if you count the tube around the headlights.

I also made a set of removable mudflaps for mine. Quick pin and pull and they are off. Pretty handy but I keep em on while I am on the road.

Reverse lights might be tricky though.

TallGuyJeep
10-16-2015, 12:41 PM
Not sure, i haven't looked too closely at it. It seems to be brake fluid based on location. There was enough of a leak to drip on the rotor and down the tire. Will be looking at that first thing after work tonight.

I have some mud flaps with the same setup, just forgot to put them on. [emoji14] they are actually a semi mud flap cut in half so they are a bit too long and drag the ground which is annoying so I've left them off. Just need to remember for next time which is free if i go back within 30 days.

I'm just glad they didn't care about my exhaust patch.

Ya, I didn't doubt them but I have had the bumper on for more than 3 years prior without any hassle.

And, good thing you didn't take it to a muffler shop for inspections. Lol, I have had some experience with that on the wifes old car. They didn't pass a muffler clamp on the tip right after the muffler that I installed after I had installed a new muffler. But, she took it by herself and were fishing for work from what I could tell.

I haven't, just foam? Also how does that work with a corvette or other sports cars, they have NO bumper.

As long as it doesn't leak they should have to pass it i believe. That's why i like going to jiffy lube or similar place, but it probably depends on the store/people working. So far I've had good experiences with them.

That's why I can't wait to get back down to SC... Where we don't even have inspections (currently)... But many years back when we did, they were done at Jiffy Lube's, and other gas stations that had little garages (how many of those are still around now days??)

Good points. Definitely a good thing in the big picture, even if it is annoying sometimes.

Turns out i have a bad axle seal on the rear passenger side. Hope to get that fixed late this week, early weekend. Spent some time chasing wires for the 3rd brake light and reverse lights. Not getting any power to the brake light, but when i touch my test light to one of the reverse light sockets it turns on?? Bad ground? The back of the housings were coated in dirt and the sockets had a lot of corrosion so i may have to replace them. [emoji14]

Bought it a pop up camper to tow around to events that have camping involved!! Got quite a bit of cleanup and work on the camper to do over the winter, to hopefully get her ready for next season!! Just will have to work on setting up the 7-pin adapter for the Jeep so that I can have the power wire, to charge the battery on the camper while on the road... Going to see if I feel the need to do trailer brakes or not... I'm not even sure if it even has them to start with... if not then I might just look into doing a 5-pin flat connector, and running a power line through that to charge the battery up.. we'll see.. Got to see if I can find a large enough drop hitch for the Jeep... or I might look into doing a tad bit of a lift to the pop up, so that it'll work better for any kind of terrain or anything that might be encountered at any point in time, not to mention maybe even matching the look of the XJ a bit more closely!!

I haven't been on here in a while due to work, my son's baseball schedule and the Jeep being out of commission for a few weeks due to several issues. I went wheeling about a month ago and had a blast but towards the end of the trip had my front left tire come off the rim causing me to go to my spare tire. On the way home somehow we must not have gotten the tire and lugs on tight because my spare came flying off damaging my rotor, brake pads, fender and leaving some gauges on the inside of my spare rim. I got it all put back together and was able to find a fender that color matched so that is all fixed. I went and finally to the hit in the wallet and put on new tires on the Jeep and cleaned up a few other issues yesterday and today, but it looks like I need to make it to the junk yard to find a new front driveshaft and pick up a new wheel bearing in the new future since it's starting to show damage from the incident. Ah you gotta love the jeep life.

Well, let's see a pic of it already! We don't care if it's dirty or rusty or falling apart, we just need some damn pics!

:worthlesspics:

Will get some pics this week.. Unfortunately will only be pics of what I can get of it sitting in the storage unit.. as I already have it semi popped up in there for cleaning... Have spent quite a bit of time cleaning it already, as the previous owner did not take care of it or at least not at the end when they closed it up with quite a bit of moisture still inside of it.. I've wiped everything down inside, and will be removing all the seat cushions and drapes and such this week to throw them in the wash. Have quite a bit more work to take care of cleaning the canvas on the outsides of it, as well as making a few repairs/upgrades to it... I eventually want to replace the canvas completely, but as that is an additional $1000.. want to put that off till a bit later, and take care of what needs to be done now... Picked up a new fire extinguisher, as the one currently inside of it, was manufactured back in 1998, and is the original one to the camper.. so it was a bit passed needing to be replaced.. now just got to work on redesigning the mount, to work with the new and much better unit...

I took the fender flare off to get it home since it loosened three of the lower studs when all the carnage happened. Now I have to search for a new front driveshaft since the oil seal on the slip yoke is shot causing me all kinds of vibrations at 50 mph plus.

If you haven't already check out expedition portal, they have a ton of really cool camper trailer builds.

I have been on there and checked it out... not since taking ownership of the PUT, but have been thinking about looking on there as well as a few other sources... get some more ideas of how to fix it up and bring it up to more modern & convince standards...

Replaced both rear axle seals, figured if one was bad might as well do the other when i have the tools and the diff cover off. Also nice to know for sure that it actually does have an LSD and 4.10 gears like the PO said.

Now just need to fix some baf wiring to get the lights working right and we'll be good to go!

Finally hit the junkyard yesterday! Been needing a few things since april but didn't want to deal with the heat. Got a good haul, but spent a bit too much. Although I hope to help the budget a bit with selling a few things.

Just laying on the ground! Research looks to be from a 00-04 Dakota/Durango 4.7l.

8472

96 window sticker, good shape too.

8473

A few of the things I needed for a bit. The kj brake cables to finally finish off my zj disc setup. And to remedy my horn problem (thanks to a bit of mud) I got a few to try. However once I got home and tested them I found two didn't work. :bang: But I think I can work with what I have for now. A stock 96 zj horn, a pair from a zj (always liked the one on our 93) and as suggested a pair from a 93 Cadillac Eldorado. One from each pair worked so I tried the zj (hi) and caddy (f tone) horns together... Sounds like a freaking train horn! Not as loud obviously but has that tone. I think i'm gonna have to try a few more caddy horns with different tones. Anyway, that got a smile out of me. :D

8474

I also grabbed a set of kj brake cables to finally finish up my zj disc setup, a pair of trim panels that go over the side mirror mounting bolts (been looking for a while for a set and three had em  ), a factory underhood "reel" light (first one I've seen in person, couldn't pass it up), and a few other things.

Today I tried to put on another junkyard piece, but couldn't make it work... right now anyway. I figured i'd post it anyway in case anyone wanted to put more work in and make it right. A shift handle from a range rover. Didn't catch the year I pulled it from but it was a 94-02 model. I had to open up the hole to 5/8" to get it to slide on the shifter but the ultimate unforeseen problem was I couldn't get my hand in between the handle and dash for the reverse lockout button. Just too close. Maybe a 97+ has more room. I am now enthused with finding another ball type grip to put on it....

Went JY shopping yesterday for some parts for my XJ, as well as a few other folks vehicles... Picked up a complete already white header panel without a hole in it, to replace my current one that has a hole in it.. White flares, to replace the jacked up painted flares that I currently have. Also pick up a new piece of trim that goes over the factory license plate location as mine was not painted very well and has the paint coming off of it.. Also on that same XJ I saw that it has a black interior (dark gray).. I started pulling the rear portion, and plan on going back to try and pull the remaining pieces of it, so that I can get rid of the hideous tan interior.. The seats from what I could see were in far better condition then mine as well... They are going to require quite a bit of cleaning once I do get them all out and home. And as of right now I'll keep them sitting around, until I figure out whether I'll be getting my old 98 XJ back or not... cause if so then I'll put the darker interior in it, and the gray interior that the 98 has into the 97 to get rid of the tan interior..

You got it. 2x6 for the rockers, 1.5" angle to go along the edge of the floor, and 1.5x3 for braces to the frame stiffeners. Getting a little concerned about weight... jus the 2x6 is over 100 lbs.

Yep, that's the exact plan I've been looking at. I'm hesitant because my rockers are currently pristine and it almost seems like a waste to cut them out. Not to mention I'm still not very good at welding, so maybe by the time I practice enough I'll also have enough gumption to take the plunge.

3/16'' wall?

Yep, 3/16". I've read of a few accounts of 1/8" bending. Although i bet they're using them pretty hard but with as much work as it is i don't wanna do it again.

I would definitely get some more practice in for this one. I'm still a bit uncertain with how its gonna go welding the door seal area to the tubing. My rockers being rusted is the main reason i'm doing this though. If mine were like yours i'd probably build sliders instead. But i do really like the thought of gaining a tidbit of ground clearance versus loosing a fair bit.

Got the brake cables adjusted and wow, these little parking brakes suck! I can't even get them to lock on grass. It did at first, on the left side, even on pavement. Then I guess I got all the rust off or something and now they just slow it some. Oh well, they are really small shoes.

I also installed the "new" horns to replace my pitiful mud-filled original parts. I plan on getting a couple more to try but for now I have a ZJ hi-tone on the drivers side...

8502

And a '93 Caddy Eldorado F-tone on the passenger side.

8503

Took a bit of persuasion but I was able to use the mounts that came with each horn.

Oh yeah, much lower than stock. Has more of a train horn tone, just not as loud. :p The air horns are just a cheap HF set, but not bad for $15.

I wanted to do the three, or even four horn caddy setup. A lot of caddys come with that. But I've read the factory wiring can't handle it and it just blows the fuse.

Drove it over to a member of local Jeep club's house... (the same guy who's shop I installed the full lift, TB and steering setup, during a wrench party)... to get up with a few other XJ folks and help them out with their rigs... Had one that is a new XJ owner, that since he got his 99 it's had a crazy high idle, and he's tried replacing every sensor on the TB, vacuum lines and other parts, I even changed out the IM/EM gasket, to no avail.. well picked him up a TB out of the JY a few weeks back, and I threw that on today, and all seems well again, as well we replaced the oil filter adapter o-ring. Another new XJ owner (his wife's XJ actually, he's a JK owner (but we won't hold that against him, he has an XJ in the house)).. who hasn't been able to get it to pass through inspection.. we took care of a few items he had flag through inspection, but still got a few more to work on in coming weeks..

replaced engine oil & filter, as usual castrol gtx 5w30 & wix 51515.

checked vacuum lines and spark plug wires to troubleshoot erratic idle, found following
- 6th cable has a loose connector & it tightened, actually connector remains on spark plug when I pulled out wire
- heard a hissing sound at oil dipstick, if push down dipstick it will mute. Is it a sign of bad rings?

Guessing it is time to compression test, :(

Seems it's not very common in TX since the registration stickers are on the windshield. In FL And MO at least, they're on the license plates and people will take some tin snips and steal your stickers or just take the whole damn thing!

I've known peoplw that have had their stickers just peeled off the plate. You can use a razor blade and cut some lines in it or an x so they can't take the whole sticker in one piece.

Oh yeah, I've seen that too. I think they now come with perforations, but my dad taught me to take a razor blade and cut through it a few more times to make it even harder to peel off.

FL stickers actually have your license plate number printed right on the sticker, but it's pretty small so I doubt an officer would notice unless they already suspected something was up with it.

Picture works for me! I've thought about those viair compressors seem pretty nice. Kinda pricy for the constant duty though. I think one day i will convert my ac compressor like Steve has done.

GoneWithTheWind

For some reason I can't see all the pictures when I post them. Some show up later.
The viair was more than I wanted to spend ( I got it a bit cheaper than what 4wd has it for) but I didn't want just a pump. The pumps alone cost enough. The ac conversion sounds worthwhile, and I believe if done right, puts out more air than I need. I've heard of people doing it in the past but never really knew the output (cfm). Any idea if it adds much heat to the engine bay?

TallGuyJeep
11-10-2015, 05:54 PM
I doubt it adds any more heat, no more than actually running the AC does. I'm sure Steve will pipe in and i think there is a thread floating around somewhere that he made. Here is a video Steve made explaining his setup and showing it in action. Fills that tire quick!

people steal license plates?? could tack weld the nut

License plate theft is pretty common here in North Carolina. You have to pass inspection, pay your property tax and have proof of insurance before you can renew your tags. It's cheaper and easier for the punks and thugs to just take a plate off a someone else s vehicle.
I put my plates on with snake eye screws. Yea, they can still get my plate if they want it. but They have to work for it.... and pray I don't wake up.

The process is pretty easy here in MN. Just have to find the time to get to the DMV and pay duplicate plate fees. Its a huge hassle. I may have to invest in some bolts like these.

Finally managed to get to the junk yard today, picked up new tail lights with the sockets and wiring and a front sway bar. Took the tail lights off an xj imported from japan so that was kinda cool. Right hand drive and the kittle warning stickers on the sun visor were in Japanese so that was cool.

Got one side wired and spliced in, works perfect! :D just need to do the other side now and we'll be street legal!

JY shopping is always a good time!! I picked up a few things the last time I was there, that I wanted, as well as a few spare parts, like spare tail lights, in case the current ones get broken... Going to try and go again soon, to see if the 01 I pulled some parts off of last time is still there, and if so going to continue pulling the interior apart, so I can rid my XJ of the horrible trashed tan interior..

Put a new battery on it. Need new terminals, Olds are corroded and bolts aren spinning like they shouldn't. But I had a solution. Pull an old 3 iron out of the bag and beat em on the battery. Cherokee fired right up.

I also recommend some plants in your grille. Sure to keep temps down! Speaking of down, yall keep her rubber side down now ya hear?

Have a bit of a saga going with the liftgate shocks. For the longest time, years, I wanted new ones but never wanted to spend the money on something I didn't need or really want. But last april I finally decided to ask for them as a birthday gift. (so I didn't have to chose to spend the money on them :D ) Well, when I went to try them they didn't have the correct end one side. Well, a long story short the person that ordered them never got around to getting them sent back so I just went ahead and bought some last week and tried them yesterday. One was seized... thought I was gonna crack the fiberglass trying to get it to compress. Even tried pushing it down with my brother and myself on it. Nothing. They are sending a replacement. And in trying to get them swapped out my brother wanted to see if they would fit his. But I noticed the end was loose. So, now feeling stupid, I figure out the ends are threaded and swapped them out for the ones off my old shocks. But the new-new ones are still stronger so i'll put the other on when it comes in and my brother will get the others. See, a saga! For something that's suppose to be so simple!!!

Ran the codes for the CEL when I got home from work this morning... Gave me three codes...

P0138 -- O2 Sensor (B1,S2) High Voltage Condition
P0141 -- Oxygen Sensor fault, right side, post catalyst
P0320 -- Ignition/distributor engine speed input circuit

I figure the top two are connected, and will replace the lower O2 sensor again, and see if that'll take care of those codes... Not 100% sure on the last one... Have been reading online, and some folks have said crank position sensor, but have also see camshaft position sensor.. so not sure on which one I should look into on that... If it's more the camshaft position sensor, then I'll probably just hit up a new distributor, as the current one has a laughing hyena sound, mainly when it's cold out.. so might as well replace it and get rid of what I'm hoping is the old bearing in the distributor making the noise... and take care of the camshaft position sensor.. if that is in fact what causes the P0141 code..

I must have been doing it wrong. No breakage! :gitrdun:

It was a ton of fun. I inspected her soft underbelly this morning and found lots of dirt and mud, one dead headlight (not sure how that happened), but no drivetrain, suspension or steering damage. Somehow the Pinion bearing even survived!

Haven't done much to mine since the flex plate. Till a few weeks ago, started getting this annoying humming and growling while driving over 55 mph.
So check the front hubs. They're tight no play, so check rear end, had lots of play in pinon bearing, so took cover off lot's of metal in oil.. Lucky i have a spare 8.25..
So Halloween i swapped in my spare rear end. 8556
Well problem still there...
So next thing i checked was front, well it has more play in pinon then the rear did..
So now I'm trying to save up and just regear to 4.56 like I've planned..

This weekend i swapped wheels with a buddy.
8557

He didn't like the 10 inch wide wheels on his. I've always like these Pro Comp Street locks. So figured I'll give them a shot.

Looked at it.... seems after getting the emergency brakes working again, the light doesn't. Got a call from daughter, "hey, there's smoke coming from the back of the jeep, not the front like last time, and not the exhaust pipe" then and "oh shoot!, I left the emergency brake on" and she hung up. I grounded her to the mini van until I get a chance to "test it out".... and fix the light. I take partial blame as I should have noticed the light was out.

Well, i am still fighting the intermittent dying at idle with the occasional p0340 code. I did a couple things. My camshaft sensor only had one bolt holding it in. I removed distributor, got the broken bolt out and put sensor back in with both bolts. Maybe it was slightly cockeyed or vibrating causing it to lose the reading on camshaft. I also installed a new aor charge temp sensor and put fresh dieelectric grease on all sensor connections. We will see in morning when jeep is cold if these things helped.

Check the swith connector at the lever. Mine is a tab right on swith that broke off. I remedied that with an extension with female spade on one end since the factory connector was cracked.

How's your RPM's look when up on the highway @ cruise?? Been debating between 4.56 or 4.88's on mine... I certainly need to regear mine that is for sure.. she does not like moving with the 33's on there.. Kind of sucks, cause my old 98 moved nicely... so am guessing it was regeared prior to me taking ownership of it.. The 97 definitely is struggling to get moving... so definitely don't want to try rolling her three hours north to even get to the trails, much less have a struggle out on the trails...

My RPM's aren't too bad, at 60ish, I am right at 2,200 on my 33 inch tires. I need to get a new speedo gear to figure out actual speed. I had the stock 3.55 gears in it, and it was a total dog on 33's. I'm happy I went with the 4.88's. I had thought about 4.56, but after talking to a few guys, I went with 4.88. If I put 35's on, I will still be good.

Preparing for a 10 hour road trip back to St. Louis from Dallas this week. Changed the oil and filter, distributor cap, rotor, and spark plug wires. Then rotated the tires, checked the rest of the fluids, and greased everything with a nipple (yes, I giggled like a school girl while typing "nipple").

Also got to work installing the CB in my girlfriend's TJ. Welded a small piece of metal on the inside of the bumper to help reinforce the area where the antenna will be mounted, prob a little overkill but hey I already bought the welder and had a piece of scrap nearly the perfect size so why not! I was already going to remove the bumper anyway to make sure it has a good ground so it wasn't much more work. Repainted the bumper with bed-liner, routed the cable along the factory wiring harness so it's almost completely hidden, and got the radio installed on the center console.

Sorry no pics of this because my phone is acting up right now.

Received upgraded alternator I ordered online for it... Supposedly it's bolt on, which it look like it would be... just kind of interested to see if it is really upgraded or not...
Also received new headlight upgrade harness I ordered... cause I didn't feel the Putco harness was really working as well as it could be..

You might want to look at one of these kits. Not sure if your XJ is like the ZJ but the ECM handles the regulator duty and from what I have been told by different people that with a more powerful alternator it won't handle it. This place sells a kit to install an external regulator.

Swapped out the Putco harness with the new one I got in... Seems to be much better construction, and seems to work better as well, we'll see after a little bit of usage... Also re-installed my LED headlights, removed them cause they were flickering just a bit... Want to see if the new harness will help with that issue.. but if not, then I'll get some video of it flickering for the folks I purchased the lights through, so I can get replacements for them..

Completed my third viper coil -coil pack conversion. This one was on my daughter's silver 2000. I'm getting better at doing this. Coil was $32,Harness was $27, and Since I did not have any plug wires from the JY, spent $32 on new wires. I put new plugs(ZFR5N) in at the same time and she ran pretty sweet on a test drive. You do not have to use a viper coil. Other Chrysler coils will work according to the write up on NAXJA(in the modified section).

Thanks for that link... I have found on Amazon a full hardware kit with just about everything hardware wise for the rear drum setup for both sides... as I'm about to have to redo my rear brakes, since they are completely shot.... don't want to wear out my brand new front brakes any more then I have too, so figure might as well go ahead and replace the rear brakes, not to mention the added stopping power!!!

My old 86 Xj had 4.5" lift with 31x10.50's and I went EVERYWHERE the guys with 33's went, they hated me for it but it was fun. Lol
So I think the same with my Mj and I'll be good.

Where'd you buy the harness? Just hooked up one I bought. Didn't work on first try, it got dark on me so I put tools away and will check it tomorrow. Realized I didn't even checked to see if it came with fuses in the fused pos wire!! Lol. I'll check it out tomorrow.

Also, I wheeled the PISS out of it at Barnwell on Sunday. Hit quite a few 3s and a buncha mild cruising stuff. Took my buddy and his son out, trying to expose them to the bug. pretty sure my buddy got bit on some level. More on that later.

With all the rain we've had, doable 3 rated trails were playing like a 4 all day long. Couple familiar ones I didn't even bother with caused they're so washed out. Stood the Cherry Bomb up on the rear tires trying to climb a nasty ledge. Backed out of it and cruised on. Jeep kicked ass as usual. Really enjoying rear locked. At end of the day, we had a solid 2' ledge to summit with lots of mud and ruts that hardened down below. I kept trying to get left or right of the ruts but fell back in every time. Finally I backed up further and got aggressive on the wheel left of the ruts and she finally hooked up and held the line. Had to get on the pedal to climb out. Hooked up again and pulled out, Shit flying everywhere. Great time, really tested the rig and have a few improvements, as always.

went to look at the fused pos wires, no fuses there! I'll have to look and make sure its fused. What I saw was just a quick disconnect. pass side socket that feeds the relays voltage to switch them on was pretty corroded. I'll start there cleaning up the socket.

Its supposed to snow this weekend though, so she may get some play time in.

All this warm weather has me bummed. People are still out fishing in boats, when the lakes are usually ready for ice fishing by now.
