Will have to post pics tomorrow, but got the Iron Man Andy's track-bar bracket and track bar installed, torqued down the rear suspension, installed the tires once more and put in on the ground to see how it sits...

Looks even to my eyes, but I know I need an alignment:rolleyes:

I tried to center the axle with the track bar via measuring tape, but boy is my steering wheel way off from center. :bang:

Oil change.
Valvecover gasket. I hate that ****ing job, and the fact that the damn gasket was almost 50 bucks.
Primed rear bumper.
Hopefully going to drill out my front yoke and do ubolts/put in my front driveshaft tomorrow.

Drove my Wife and Father in-law to their family reunion in Bowling Green OH yesterday, about 370 miles round trip. It was the first "trip" with my XJ and its 193xxx miles. First fill up 18.7 MPG the next fill up 19.4. At that rate, I figure 6 or 8 more tanks of gas and I should be pulling down 34 / 35 mpg! SWEET!!!

Checked out the coolant leak, it was just the hose. No worries.

And broke out one of my goodies i got a few months ago. :D

I didn't like the rough texture so i used a 120 grit flap wheel to knock it down a little. Later it got a coat of primer to hold it over.

since installing of 33x10.5R25 KM2s on 3.75" bs wheel, my tires are goes out nicely, but if I go through any type of water, mud etc she sprayed everywhere, from sides to top. Also i cut front fenders and removed inner wheel well protector/guard plastic, lots of mud collected around front door hinge area. Thinking about wide enough fender flares long ago, at last made them. They are made using conveyor belt, angle iron and screw. Of course spray paint and silicone sealant used there :D

Nothing. :bang:

Put up a new fence to contain the canine flower bed destruction unit after his last escape and wanton slaughter my many of my wife's favorite flowers, rosebushes and BOTH blueberry bushes, resulting in significant expense to replace said plants and many "yes, dear" statements to reduce stress levels.

Finished grading the gravel road to the back of the farm with the tractor, and since I already had the scape blade mounted, went ahead and cleaned out the ditches on both sides in preparation for the fall and winter rain.

Repaired the enclosure for the pygmy goat (he was using his horns to push UNDER the chain link fence), and went into the woods to cut down some holly saplings for the wife to use to create a natural arbor for an upcoming friend's wedding being held on our property.

Maybe tomorrow.

Yesterday i took advantage of 1/2off at one of the jy's. It was so brutally hot i just stopped at one point and couldn't continue. I was burnt to a crisp and ended up forgetting about several items i hoped to get. But i did get some stuff and got to hang out with Brasscatz and gladly accept his help. (Thanks again Jim!)

My main goal was to get the parts to do the disc swap in the rear and since Libertys are apparently scarce i had to go with ZJ parts. Figuring it would be easier and quicker to pull than each brake part, we disassembled a '97 ZJ for the Dana 35. Most of our time was spent on that. But we did get it out.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-08-31193138.jpg

So now i can disassemble it where i can take my time and study it well.

I also snagged up some xj waggy tail lights and headlights bezels, and a trim piece that only comes on xj Laredos. So that several YEAR search is finally over. Oh and sourcing tools there seems to work. I forgot to bring my lug nut wrench so the zj proved fruitful and had one, along with a bottle jack. The rear seat was nice while we wrenched too. :P I ended up getting the ZJs lug nut wrench to use when i head to jy's in future times. Its much smaller than mine for carrying to jy's and they didn't charge me for it.

Scored a trailer hitch, trailer wiring harness, and a seat belt buckle for $30 yesterday the the jy (half off also). It was very hot as well and by the time I got the hitch and wiring I was rather parched. Got the seat belt buckle and called it a day. Spent some time today grinding the peeling paint and surface rust off the hitch. Will paint tomorrow. Stopped by a fellow Jeepers shop where he was having a Jeep wrench party and had him remove a bolt I broke off in the "nut strip". He even ran a tap through all the threads to clean it out... will post about the "nut strips" tomorrow. :)

I installed the alarm system horn, it's not very loud though, but at least it might be enough to scare someone off before they vandalize my vehicle again. I'll be getting another alarm horn.

Fixed the rain gutter antenna mount. I had an old cutting board made of semi ridged white plastic. Cut a hung out of it and shaped it to attach to the clip, now I can unhook my antenna and work some DX on the way home!

If you recall I destroyed an O2 sensor by hitting it with the front drive shaft. It looked like the O2 bung the muffler shop welded on there was at a bit of angle to it, angled towards the drive shaft, the yoke specifically.

I could take it back to the muffler shop, or I could just replace the whole downpipe. I got the whole downpipe. Installed.

Finally got the new rear bumper ready to go on the Jeep. Took the stock one off and realized, with heavy new bumper in hand, I never received mounting brackets for the new bumper. Need to call the vendor today and try to remedy the situation.

In the meantime, adjusted the drag link to straightend the steering wheel on Jens Jeep (post lift install). No I gotta figure out how to wire up the steering wheel so her horn works again.

Despite planning to work on it this evening something else came up (as usual).

As the suspension work is getting closer to being done, I need to start ordering parts to finish things out.

I am looking at ordering a C-ROK Engineered Inside frame plate w/bolt kit:
http://www.c-rok4x4.com/#!product/prd1/976127514/c-rok-inside-frame-plate
This should complement the Detours Backbone.

As mentioned in another thread, lower control arms skids, and maybe even the pre-cut plate for the Dana 30 passenger side upper control arm mount.

Still looking at the Alloy USA outer seals for the Dana 30 too.

While removed, lengthened the Iron Man Andy's lower control arms per numbers given by Andy, and adjusted the new uppers per his spec also.

Got a chance to replace my d35 axle with chrysler 8.25. Met with buddy who bought 93 XJ with korean SUV engine, transmission and transfer case. And he feels lack of power and too much speed on highway. He have 3.07 and I explained 3.07 is much faster than 3.55 which I have and I am having bigger than stock tire and wants to regear mine. He asked to replace his with mine and I am in doubt.
Pros:
1. his d30 have ABS axle shaft, which have bigger u-joint
2. his rear is C 8.25, better than d35
3. no idea about rear axle, at least there is almost no sound

Cons:
1. his passenger side UCA mount is damaged and welded, need to fabricate new mount
2. his d30 pinion bearing (guessing) shot, pinion have ~5mm of play side to side and make humming sound when driving
3. both axles may have a bearing issue, he said no service for last 3 year, even not changed oil

I am on both front and rear axle replacement side, buddy wants to get my 3.55 set.
I will order 4.56 regear set when budget allows, but it may be next spring.

what do you suggest Bros? to replace or not to replace?

Od, if this is a 93 8.25 you won't be gaining much in strength with the small shafts. And I think there is enough wrong with these from abuse and neglect you might want to stay away from them. Since you are not locked and don't have any rock crawling available, the D35 will work fine for you. Personally I would stay away from it

I have the 4.56 gears, master kits, etc, but I don't have the spanner for the 8.25 adjusters. And I have not managed to buy a angle die grinder yet to shave one of the ring gear teeth on the 8.25....with C-clip axles, are there any other options?

Forget to latch the hood? You're not a real Jeeper unless you have done that at least once...its gets to be a competition to see how much it will cost you each time.

1st time is usually the plain hood, so when you replace it, you add lights, or something else, and then THAT gets broke, plus the damaged hood,

The next time, usually the glass and windshield frame bite the dust, PLUS whatever other cool accessory you thought needed to be on the hood. :bang:

Been there, done that.

Have a good buddy with a CJ-5 that had a tweaked windshield frame from a tree hit during a hill climb.

We come across a complete windshield with glass, I help him switch it out one morning so we can go riding.

I head home to get my CJ at the time, and run inside for stuff for the cooler, and the phone rings...

"John, you are not going to believe this...."
"What?"
"I needed gas and ice so I hopped in the Jeep to run down the speedy mart.....and I forgot to latch the hood after I checked the oil when you left...."
"Let me call you back in a few minutes, I need to go have a headache...."

The last few days i got... nowhere near as much done as i hoped.

Finished painting the front Riddler diff cover, and smoothed the rear cover along with near finishing its paint. :bacondance:

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-09-09180539-1.jpg

Just for giggles decided to peek under the cover of that ZJ D35 we pulled. More on that here... http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=15864

Trimmed the Laredo fender trim piece because of my flares being moved up, and prepped it for paint. Then looked at the other side to see i had trimmed the flare instead. No biggie. :banghead:

And today, spur of the moment i chose to start installing the JKS mini-skids (front axle lower control arm skids) that i've had setting around for over a year. Had to modify the skids a little, and bent back the wavy passengers arm mount. Got to the point of jacking it up, which showed me the downside of having an extra amount of droop. Took me about an hour to get it high enough. And the drivers side is STILL slightly on the ground.

Finally got the JKS mini-skids installed, well, except for one control arm is still loose to let the paint dry overnight. It took a lot more time than i had expected but after being up close and personal with the factory control arm mounts i highly suggest them to anyone.

Now, when doing my research i learnt the factory only welded the control arm mounts to the axle on the outsides. So in my efforts to give it some extra strength i welded along the inside too. But of course midway through the passengers side the welding wire ran out. After another day and some new wire today i got to finish up. I welded the skids along both sides, top to the axle tube, and a few stitches on the inside sides. While i was at it i cleaned up a portion of the axle tube and painted it since i was doing the rest anyway.

One good thing about being jobless, I have time to work on the XJ.....hopefully I won't have to sell it to pay the mortgage.

Did not get any pics though...:bang: So I'll link some to show what I was talking about....

Installed my Detours C3R's today..

http://detoursusa.com/images/c3r_main.jpg

These mount on your Class III hitch....the install went a LOT smoother than I thought it would. I had two Cobalt-coated Dewalt bits, and then looked at the new Drill Doctor....I got out my chipped, dull as :turd: 1/2" HF bit, set it up in the Drill Dr, and sharpened it per the DVD. That cheap HF bit that dulled and chipped drilling some 3/16" mild steel with the factory point on it chewed 8 clean holes in my Class III hitch cross tube with little to no wear, clean holes, and throwing chips like a......well, like a much more expensive bit.

That went so well, I moved to the front to install the C-Rok Inside frame plate for the steering box.....and promptly broke a mounting bolt.

So I will pick it up in the AM, and see what I can get done.

Thanks! It turned out to be more work than i originally thought. A tip. As you probably know you need to remove the lower control arms, but just remove the axle side. I was able to tilt them back into place without hitting the mini-skids.

I was using my brothers Hobart 125ez which is a flux core welder. So i got Lincoln 0.030 flux core wire from Home Depot. May have to try 0.035 in it.

It's been sounding like air getting sucked into a hose driving around lately so I checked the the bracket around the hose to the air filter and sure enough it was so loose I could just spin it around, tightened it and that fixed that.

Also added washer fluid and checked the rest of my fluids.

Nothing too much but it always feels good to get under the hood of my xj.

A little bit of propane torch work and a big pair of Vise Grips and the broken bolt spun out of the steering box.

I was about to bolt up the C-Rok plate, and remembered there was a Detours Backbone in the back of the XJ to install.....hmmm, might as well mock it up and see how bad the front panel is messed up.....guess I should go ahead and run the cabling for the wench while I am at it.....one thing led to another and....

Of course, after getting the winch installed, I had to see if it worked.....

Hmmm.....which tree? Need tree strap and some heavy gloves....

Spooled out all the cable, parked the XJ on a slight slope, put on the double-palm Wells Lamont gloves, had my son sit in it and ride the brakes slightly...

Re-spooled the cable on the drum under load, carefully laying the frist wrap and each one after, testing the winch and wiring at the same time....so it's ready to go.

It's not much of a test, but I like the Smitty Bilt X20 winch so far....magnet on the remote is a good idea. In-cab controls will follow once a job creates paychecks again.

Yes, winches are just too much fun :D

It was really nice to get it running, but I might switch out the mounting bolts and bolts for the fairlead.....the included stainless fasteners are a bit marginal for the thick Detours mount, not sure I have got enough threads engaged.

I went for the "above the spool" mount for the solenoid, with the idea of putting it in the potential "dead space" between the driven and electric fans, trying to not BLOCK too much of the air flow.

Yeah, i just had it on the jack too. The one side went all the way up till it stopped at the bumpstop but i still had several inches of droop on the other side, which would also raise the one side. And i want to keep it clear from hitting anything, but just barely so i get the most out of it. :D I need to flex it out!

Now I am feeling lack of power, but I have a plan :D

They are not so bad condition at all, welded front upper control arm bracket. Rear don;t have any noise, sound. Front pinion bearing humming a bit.

At least I've got bit bigger rear axle shaft and easier to adjust differential.

will clean 'em all and spray paint them soon

How long did that take if you dont mind me asking?

Did your lift kit get effected by this?

You can pick them up @ AZ and I'm sure the other chain auto parts stores as well!! We've installed them in horse trailers so you can keep an eye on the horses and what is goign on in the trailer while on the road... I've thought about if there was a way to setup two cameras on the same display to run one in the front one in the back for underneath the Jeep.. LOL

There are loads of back up cameras out there, some cheap, some expensive. Don't like wireless. I personally don't want one on my Jeep, but my wife would like one on hers. I was asking for details because knowing a specific make/model and how well it works is better than the crap shoot in just picking one for $35.

we started early morning around 8AM and finished 8PM with lunch and lots of smoking and discussion :D Me and my friend dismounted each axle from both XJ and mounted my axles first. next day he installed his axles alone.

nothing happened with lift kit, everything bolt on swap, I installed longer control arms, front axle position corrected and now she riding very soft.

Tuesday I went out to the garage to change the drag link and put on the old track bar from the TJ on the 99. I have my daughter run the steering wheel back and forth again and I thought I could get away with just changing the TRE on the drag link for now.

I also found out that my daughters weren't experiencing true death wobble. It was move of a wobble at 60 mph plus. I had my oldest test drive it and she said it was fine now.

I did hear a popping noise as she was backing out of the driveway. After having her repeat that several times I could tell it was coming from the front and most likely is the very common track bar popping noise.

So this weekend it will be disc brakes for the 98 and I guess I'll have to drop the track bar on the 99 and see if the problem is the built in TRE or the stock track bar mount's TRE hole is wallowed out.

Well, with the 90 XJ sold last Monday, it was time to get the 96 legal. Passed Texas state inspection today. First inspection since December 2010.

After I got home I inspected the front rear brakes. Both front rotors were trash. cracks on both sides of both sides...

Well I replaced both rotors and pads.

Test drive proved that now my calipers are not releasing and my front brakes are stuck. Takes quite a bit to move the Jeep.

Any ideas?

Today I took a look at the turn signal wiring because they are acting a little funky, nothing was loose or anything like that so I think it's the switch. Took a look at the drivers seat which was feeling pretty loose and well...how to describe this...some of the metal underneath at one of the bolts is just ripped off so I still need to locate a seat replacement.

Not being able to fix either of the things on my list today I decided to give the XJ a wash, inside and out, and cleaned up under the hood, then I went a little crazy with the armer all. Even if shit still needs to be fixed at least the dash is nice and shiney!

Alright well i have completely new front brakes... THe rotors for my 96 were different than those that fit on my donor axle. Two nights ago i replaced the rotors with what the auto store had shown for my jeep. After installation and attempted test drive i knew something was wrong, brakes would not release. So conclusion was that The calipers were toast. Bought the calipers last night and installed... Same issue, as soon as I tightened up the lugnuts, the wheels would not turn. So i dug my old rotor out fo the dumpster and compared...the "height" of the replacement rotor was talled than original. I then went back to the parts store at about 11pm(they're open til midnight) returned the wrong rotors and found that my axle on my jeep must be a 00-01 front axle. The rotors for that year matched the one i had pulled off.
So TODAY(little after 12:00am) i reinstalled everything, pads/rotors/calipers. then flushed my brake fluid for good measure. Gotta love doing a job 3 times to get it right.

Friday I drove around to a bunch of mechanics/welders to try to find someone willing to put a couple spot welds on the rail that the brake pads ride on because the pads wore a small groove. Nearly every shop said "no" as soon as I mentioned the words "brakes" and "welding" without even listening to the problem. Finally found a Volvo specialist who listened to me, looked at the pics, and agreed that it was a fairly simple job. Quoted an hour's labor which I think is fair although about the same price as a JY Knuckle but this way I don't have to remove the hub and the axle shaft. I've never done that myself before and worry about nicking an axle seal or breaking something else along the way. What would you guys do?

Took advantage (somewhat) of the cooler temps on Saturday. 80° feels great when you've had 100° for months. Anyways, i finally dealt with those '97+ mirrors we pulled at the jy a few months back. They were scuffed up some in certain spots. One had a little round mirror stuck to it, and the other still had remnants of glue from the same. So i pulled off the extra, small mirror and cleaned up the glass. Then scuffed them up to add a coat of satin black to get them looking like new. After some bad problems the first couple tries i finally got it right and they came out very well.

I now have folding mirrors in doing this swap, i know that will come in handy. And the newer mirrors are power, although i have to locate the wiring harness and see if can hook them up. I also grabbed the switch to operate them from the same jeep. And for only about $20 total. :D

It was an easy swap with only a couple things to mention.

The newer mirrors set on top of the window molding a tad so it creates a small gap at the top. A small dab of black silicone goes virtually unnoticed and should help.

The newer ones are power whereas the original were manual. And even though i have wired them up yet you have to squeeze the wiring through the opening by the mounting holes. That's just for power units though, ignore for manual ones.

progress on the 98 is coming along well. Got the new tires put on . The driving lights were also installed. These are similar to the ones described in cpttuna's mods also on this site. I included a picture of the switch. There is a lot of space for the switch threads to go through(the metal as well as the plastic). The push / pull switch from O'reilly auto parts had more threads and the push /pull option extended the switch the way I wanted it to.

Finally finished the "storage" brackets for the Rough Country quick-disconnect links for the front sway bar.....

http://www.roughcountry.com/sway-bar-disconnects-1128.html

I hate self-tapping screws....I really do...:bang:

I ended up drilling and using a two-flute tap to make things work better...

I double checked the instructions, but was not happy with where they wanted the storage brackets installed, so I installed them where they seemed to work with the Detours Backbone...

And lowered the rear suspension by using the .5" lift location on the Iron Rock Off Road Shackles, might actually get to wheel the XJ this weekend..

all were installed successfully. The trouble was getting spare relays. I can't remember where I got them from. I have not heard of anyone having trouble with the harness from LMC.

I am going to be trying to track down some spare relays for that harness, if I can't find any then I'm going to try and swap in a set of standard relay sockets so I can just pick up a relay at any parts store, or swap it from an unimportant system of the Jeep to get me home if need be!!

What sort of relays & plugs do they use to make life difficult ??

Have seen a few posts mention the relay issue.

There is a post somewhere someone modified the harness to take standard parts-store replays, that would be a handy mod.

I get to post in here again! Woo! Sunday, I ordered a ZJ pitman arm for the 1" drop from Amazon with my "You Boughten What" winnings, and today I just ordered adjustable lift shackles from Rough Country. They do still give a discount for xjtalk, but now you have to pay the full amount, install them on your Jeep, take a pic, put it on the forum, aaaand send the link to Rough Country and they'll give you a 10% discount. Good idea on their part so they make sure they get some advertising actually. Bad part is I'm not planning on putting them on for a while. Maybe I'll go ahead and install them and be at 4.5" in the rear and 3" in the front for now LOL!

Here's my latest "still need for lift" list

1. ZJ Pitman arm - ordered :check:
2. Disconnects - getting some from a BigJim :check:
3. Adjsutable lift shackles - ordered :check:
4. Bigger Tires - expensive!!!!

Spent the morning calling around for a new drivers seat and was able to get one for $50 from a local full service jy near by that also has a pnp across the street so I hit that too. I pulled a new bar for the roof rack and a gas cap with a tether (little thing like that make my life so much easier). I went for a blinker switch only to find it had star shaped screws and I didn't bring any of those drivers.

When I got home I put in the new seat, roof rack bar and gas cap. I also set up my emergency stuff bucket and got that back in the jeep and finally put on the license plate covers I bought for my husband about 6 months ago.

In reference to some posts from earlier this week, it took some convincing on my part to get my HUSBAND to come to the jy with me but he had a good time in the end.

Here's pics. Top two show the new roof rack bar in the back replacing the old bent one, lower left pics are the old broken drivers seat and the new one installed, lower right is the new gas cap with tether.

I put on the new tires and wheels I bought from Discount Tire Direct. They have such good prices, I got the tires, mounted and balanced and shipped to my house for $1100. The reason I bought the new wheels is because I plan on building an offroad trailer this winter, if I have time. And I will want these matching tires and wheels for the trailer plus a spare for the trailer. And I put in the transfer case with the sye in it, and a new Tom Woods driveshaft that made the jeep run quite a bit smoother. The tires are Falken All Terrains, I talked to quite a few people who were running these, and they were all very pleased with them. So I guess I'll see.

Removed my two kayak carriers and bike rack from the roof. It's starting to get cold, I don't want to wreck them or pay the penalty in gas mileage on my new 20 miles each way daily commute. I miss my 4 mile each way drive to work as far as gas is concerned, but otherwise I like the 20 mile drive better. All freeway, and I get to drink my coffee on the way there, and wind down on the way home. 25 minute drive seems about perfect for that.

Tore into the whole notched knuckle problem, and decided to do the ball joints too....tore things down (losts of rust, but Kroil and a little propane heat helped)
No idea how to recover the dust shields, they are bad.

Axle shaft u-joints are missing at least two boots each, time to replace.

Got the notches in the caliper rails TIG welded on the drivers-side knuckle. Started dressing them down (pics later).

Used my HF Ball Joint Press with patience, grease and tapping with a hammer, and removed the upper and lower ball joints on both sides.

Would like to add a set of the outer axle shaft seals, but how to clean the tubes?

I took it out for a test drive and got the pads nice a warm so they can bed nicely to the old brake rotors.

All the tune up stuff was because I was getting codes for cylinder 2 misfire occasionally. Now it looks like I have to replace an O2 sensor. Anyone else feel like they are replacing an O2 sensor every year?

I haven't had to replace one yet. Almost did, the wires on one were frayed but I spliced in some extra wire and zip tied it up out of the way. No problems since. Do you think the wiring on yours keep getting pinched or something causing the malfunction?

Added a lot more new scratches to the jeep today. Me and the wife were out riding 4wheelers on the trails around our house. And since we havent been out there in a long time the trails had grown up alot, and we were sick of getting hit by tree limbs and small trees. So I took the Jeep out there and made several runs down each trail, to mow them back down. Was kinda fun. The trails are pretty challenging on a 4wheeler, but not that bad in a Jeep. My wife took a couple pics while she was riding behind me.

Yesterday, thanks to Matt, we fixed the lower control arm bracket on my axle. Also welded on some skid plates to the brackets so it wouldnt happen again. Was a good day. Had to flex the Jeep to try and bend the bracket up, so i get a nice new poser shot. And the real highlight of the day was watching Matt dance when he got a piece of welding slag down in his shoe...:D

LOL That shoe thing keeps the hot metal in there nice and close so it gives you the full effect. I had a 3rd degree burn the size of a half dollar just before I started work in the woods and had to wear heavy boots. Fun times

drove normally like any other day. While parking in front of home, suddenly lost all hydraulic fluid. Found a big leak at the steering gear end, around crimping of rubber high pressure hose. Ordered replacement and waiting :(

The puddle looks odd, blood red, spattered with lots of small air bubbles hahaha

I gotta admit Eric, now that I see it on my computer instead of on Facebook on my phone, it looks a lot better than I thought it did! Nicely done! I think if I did mine red though it wouldn't look as good lol.

Broke out the angle finder and tape measure. Gave the jeep the alignment that it desperately needed. Finally got around to replacing the blower motor resistor too.

I just cut mine off period. I'm not sure how people have broken ones. They're a PITA to take off completely.
