Added some of this in it. Was reading about 42* at idle, but drove it on the highway and came down to 38* :D This is what I added...

Got a bunch of stuff done yesterday, going to do down stairs againg just to putter around the garage a bit before bed! (This means I did a sufficient amount of house work this evening lol!)

1909

Re bult that^^^ :)

1910

Attached that sucker! ^^^^

I wanted to have it all in but I had to much crap to do this weekend and I'd like to start down on a Friday night just incase something goes wrong! Then I have the rest of the weekend to figure it out!

It's ok though I have plenty of other things to work on through out the week, like getting my axle read

1911

Those bushings are gonna suck! And I have to re build the u joints for that too..
I have a bunch more parts to paint yellow! It's not my favourite colour or anything I just like the contrast with the red!

1912

And I'm throwing this one in just because! Lol

I'd LIKE a 6.5" lift and humongoloid tires. BUT...this is going to be my daily driver and used to travel to fishing tourneys. I need a slight off road capability at the kayak fishing tournaments. I also want to have a capable winter weather vehicle.

One of these days, I'm sure I'll add onto the lift and get larger tires, or even acquire another Jeep with all things huge in mind. Right now, though, I really love driving my Jeep and want it to remain a daily driver for my 30 mile daily commute.

I dd mine on 6"/33s with a 30/welded 8.8 (go back a page for pic)
It needs to be regeared pretty bad and drinks as much as an alcoholic at a kegger, but its doable. Doesn't handle much different from stock either, even with no swaybars.
Id drive it across the country if I had the gas money, wouldn't get there fast without a regear but it would make it.

One of these days, I'll go up like that with mine, but I'm on a D35 in the rear and a manual tranny. I'll need to re-gear, but haven't decided to what yet. Probably only a 4.10, maybe even not that deep. Don't know. First, though, I'll have to to wear out the 31's I'm going to put on it.

I figure while I'm on the 31's, I can begin gathering parts to do stuff.

denverd1

its crazy how another 2" of tire can make your gears seem like they're WAY off. Noticed it big time now that I'm on 33s.

bluedragon436
04-08-2013, 02:38 PM
Didn't really notice too much of a difference between the stock 28's and the 33's I have now really... but do look forward to seeing how it feels when I regear... And now that I am noticing my front pinion seal is leaking worse, looks likes I'll be moving that regear up the list of mods...

Okay, a combination of Saturday and today.

I started out by marking out my plans.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-06163350-1.jpg

Then i cut off the outer edge.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-061724340-1.jpg

Next i cut the typical slits for folding.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-06175701-1.jpg

After taking out my frustrations on pieces to be folded over i smoothed the rough edges with a flap wheel. And this is what i ended up with. Basically, with finishing work, this is what it will be like under the flares.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-08184849-1.jpg

Aaaand...

Looks like something took a bite out of it.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-061723240-1.jpg

That ^ was the result of cutting, no fault of my own. :D This v was the result of the hammering. Gotta love road salt. :banghead:

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-081847000-1.jpg

I knew there was some rust, just didn't know it was quite THAT horrific. So, out came the cutoff again.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-08193336-1.jpg

The remains...

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-08205910-1.jpg

So by now i have decided its time for the ol' cut and fold mod. The problem is the drivers side is worse, enough that the typical cut and fold is impossible. So i'm gonna have to improvise. In prep of this i removed the bumper end caps, trim molding, and cut the flare up to match where the quarter panel WILL end.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-08202743-1.jpg

Enough pictures? Didn't have a life other than this, did ya? :D

Yeah, this project might take longer than expected. But a couple days ago we went home for a bit and picked up my brothers mig while we were there. My minds gone crazy ever since... :p

It keeps piling up.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-09205333.jpg

Okay, i guess I've been being evasive so far, not sure why. I guess i'm tired. Anyway, the rust came up too high on the metal i felt it was better to cut out that section. And my plan is cut all but about an inch off below the body line, bend that inch up to the inside to create a flange to weld a plate on to seal it up. One problem. I've never spot welded, and especially using a mig. I figured i'd use the old trick of putting a piece of aluminum on the underside of the holes to allow the weld to puddle, creating a spot weld? Or should i drill holes in the flange but not the plates and do small rosette welds? Any tips? Its a flux core Hobart 125 ez that i'll be using. I'm also still a little hung up on what thickness metal to use for the plates. I know i can get 16 gauge quick and easy at the hardware store but i kinda figure why not go a little thicker for strength and longevity.

So here's after bending up the inch leftover below the body line.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-09201715.jpg

And i went ahead and drilled the holes for welding.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-09203316-1.jpg

I'm going to do that too :) except I'm not going to cut too much off. Be wear,
That metal is thin! You'll easily blow right through it and welding aluminium is different, and hard to do. There are a few different types of wire you can use some better for different types of aluminum but it's not going to stick to the metal! I've tried to use metal stuff to fix an aluminum chair once and failed miserably! Only to find this out later lol

Thanks but i was speaking of this old trick i heard of a long time ago. To spot weld two pieces of steel, put a piece of aluminum under the two pieces, start welding around the holes and the aluminum kinda rejects the weld and it pools up to form a spot weld. ;) I've never welded on aluminum at all. :rolleye0012:

I'm gonna start a thread for it, maybe help others in the future too.

That's a Gas Welding trick from the old days. If you have a Mig welder, you can get spot welds with this http://www.eastwood.com/mig-spot-weld-kit-eastwood.html Or if you only have a stick welder http://www.eastwood.com/spot-weld-gun-w-2-electrodes.html

Today i got the plate trimmed up to go on the bottom of the quarter panel. I also cleaned up the welding surfaces so i get good penetration.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-11183733.jpg

Since it was getting late, and i don't have the best lighting, i chose to wait to do the welding so i don't rush it and mess up.

So instead earlier i found a dirty little secret the carpet and seam sealer toward the right rear had kept. So i took my wire wheel to it and gave it some primer.

Nice work Jake...no such thing as overkill. I gave my '92 a major tune-up yesterday...feels much better...Acceleration is noticably better, as well as response. I will keep an eye on fuel economy as well. I used the Acell Truck Kit and Super Coil from Summit Racing ($111. shipped). I gapped at .38 due to the hotter spark...I'll keep everybody posted, as these kits have a bad rep...but I've used Accel for many years with good results...time will tell. Just those big, pretty red wires take me back to my hot rod days!

I was surprised how much longer the new ones were. They're advertised for an XJ with 3 - 4 " of lift. Does anyone see an issue with the angle of the sway bar? I'm alittle worried that the bolt that connects to the sway bar will hit the body when the sway bar is connected.

I'm also playing with the idea of welding the nut on the back side of the top eyelet so I can just use a ratchet to remove that bolt and remove the nut om the sway bar mount to disco.

Today I replaced the fan clutch. I bought a regular cherokee clutch because I didn't want to compromise gas mileage with a ZJ clutch. This is the one I chose from autozone

Now when I compared the two... well, you can see the difference

Well, I finally got it back installed and realized that with its larger size, I couldn't get the shroud back in. So out it came again! I get it all back together FINALLY (It's very difficult to get to the nuts and bolts if the shroud isn't on... but WAY WORSE with it on!). I started it up to see how she ran and heard a tapping noise... it was hitting my shroud. I was bending the shroud back to get a look-see and POP! the top of the shroud broke off!! AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!! Here's the fix I came up with... it's sturdy as hell!

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/10b22665-5161-4aa8-872b-ba46920c9684_zps7a244939.jpg (http://s356.photobucket.com/user/thestalliontruck/media/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/10b22665-5161-4aa8-872b-ba46920c9684_zps7a244939.jpg.html)

The clutch did say it was a HEAVY DUTY clutch, but I was a little upset that it was so much larger. If it kills my mileage, I'll probably return it and try to find a different one.

Well the right hoses came in this week for the 1999's A/C system. I installed them this evening.

I'm still new to this, but I expected 40 low side and about 200 high side.
1979

Doors closed, A/C to max and fan on high...
1980

I can't argue with this!
1981

Now we wait and see if it stops working over the next week to two.

I have A/C work to do on the 1998, going to replace the drier, I think the other one is oil soaked.

Anyway the crank case to air box tube came in so I installed it. I'm getting oil smoke out of the tail pipe again, so while I was installing the tube I checked for any oil in the air box.

1983

The little hole that you see in the center of the picture is where the tube goes from the front of the valve cover.

I cleaned up this oil residue. We'll see if it comes back.

1-ton steering install...... got a late start on it Saturday, because the girl decided she wanted to go to a birthday party afterall....
Got the bars prepped, primed, and painted, and the one TRE reamed.....
Saturday night got most of the stock linkage off, and STARTED to pull the pitman arm off the stock gear box.....
3 hours later..... I called it a night and went to bed.
This morning (Sunday) started in on it again, and after two more hours, a 5 gallon bucket of PB blaster, a thermo-nuclear device worth of applied heat, and enough swings of a BFH to bring down the empire state building.... I finally got the damn thing to fall to the floor.

The rest of the day has been spent installing the new spacer plate, and durango box, reaming the knuckles, and hooking up hoses and such.
I STILL have the bars and TRE's to put together and install.....
Thats going to have to wait till later this week.

Put some orange stuff on the edges to smooth em out, letting it dry overnight.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-15164412.jpg

Had some more rust spots on the inside, just surface. So i showed them the business end of a wire wheel. And i thought it best, so i put some seam sealer around the tires. No, wait. The SEAMS, where else would ya put it... Rubbed it in good too.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-15214034.jpg

And also, since the new lack of metal hanging down to cover the frame... I took aforementioned wire wheel (among other things) to the visible (somewhat (really somewhat)))) area. I.e. "frame-shackle hanger-floor... If you don't know the area i may have done the wrong one. Let me know if ya know it, so i can move on...

I didn't do anything because of the weather. My WIFE, however, ordered me a new header panel. We missed the green one that was on eBay, but she scored a grey one and surprised me with it.

Now I've got to decide if I'm going to paint it green or plastikote it. I'm thinking of the plastikote because my green one is chipped up pretty good due to all the highway miles I drive. Plus, I think it would look cool.

Speaking of cool....my wife surprised me with a header panel for my jeep!

Yesterday (Tuesday)

Started out by removing the liftgate latch pin, and the trim panel that surrounds it. Its not much but the ugly thing has always bugged me.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-161553430.jpg

So i stripped it and coated it in grey.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-17193540.jpg

While i had the trim panels off i checked out below and found, you guessed it, more rust. Not bad, and mainly localized to the screw holes. So the rust was removed and painted it in semi-flat black.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-16230111-1.jpg

Gave the inside of the quarter panel the same black to finish it off.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-16225943.jpg

Put some primer on the floor/frame area by the shackle.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-16231550.jpg

And since its also gonna be so visible i stripped the undercoating from the wheel well and slapped some primer on.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-16201344-1.jpg

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-16231643.jpg

Today (Wednesday)

So technically today i re-installed the liftgate latch pin and trim panel (just thought a side by side comparison was better), and the interior trim panel on the right cargo area.

I also put semi-flat black on the floor/frame area by the shackle and wheel well.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-18030248.jpg

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-18030305.jpg

And since it was so humid and muggy i couldn't paint the glossy stuff, so i started work on the drivers side. I cut off the outer lip and cut the slits in the front and rear of the opening for folding later.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-04-17192150.jpg

Rainy out so i couldn't paint. I didn't want it to be a wasted day so i put some silicone on the folded edges on the pass. side fender to keep trash out. Then i folded over the drivers side fender pieces. Pic sucks but its the best i got.

Friday

Sanded down the fender lip and bottom quarter panel on the pass. side. And since the humidity really low (24%) i finally got to paint that side. No pics yet though, night time. I love painting with low humidity, rare for me. ;)

I also wanted to get some of the drivers side quarter off so i could get a better look at the fuel filler area. I forgot about that and it will make this side a bit tougher.

Told ya this side was worse.

I think I am more aggrivated with having to drive that far to legally wheel... or really to wheel at all legal or illegally... than I am to not have the view... if there were views like that it'd totally be worth the drive to me..

I have ok places close well bobcaygeon is really cool it's about an hour but my favourite spot is 3 hrs north! Google ardbeg Ontario :) I feel your pain!

Well now that I have moved back down to the middle of the state... there is a club that owns some land about an hour south... so at least I will have that... as soon as I take care of getting new tires and a full size spare... as well as front tow hooks... but the better good offroad spot is about 3-4hrs north...

Nope, unfortunately not... We have a few OHV parks... but like I said they are either about 4 hours north or south of me... local club has some land that they setup their own OHV setup on, and it is only about an hour south of me now... Either way I have to have a full size spare, and front tow hooks to make use of any of them... Which is/has been in the works...

04-21-2013, 09:33 PM
Yeah def not... but from what I've found over the years online... it was the owners fault anyways... well obviously for using the front axle as a pull point, but also for allowing them to pull it sidways up a hill, not head on.. but either way I def don't want that to be me.. I got the rear points taken care of... at least for now... Just got to take care of the front ones... never hurts to have when pulling folks out of ditches and medians during the winter too... instead of having to turn around anduse the rear hook...

Got rid of the old style 6 blade Efan and put a 96+ 10 blade in. Much better, pulls more air and doesnt shake the whole jeep when you turn it on.
Found out my trans cooler return line has a pretty nice cut/score in it, need to do something about that. Im buying a stacked plate cooler pretty soon anyway and will be putting it on the other side of the radiator in front of the clutch fan.
Found out I have self changing power steering fluid... Found a nice puddle and empty reservoir when I came out of work. Guess its time for a Durango box.

Durango box upgrade!!! LOL... And hit up some aftermarket exhaust to take care of that bang n bumpin'!! I got a Flowmaster 40 series 2.5" cat back setup through Rusty's offroad... since all my local exhaust shops wanted to charge me $300+ to do the same basic setup... and they refused to run Flowmaster, would only do the Magnaflow... and I didn't want that... so picked up the whole setup from Rusty's and installed it myself in the middle isle of the barn in a few quick hours...

I got my sway bar quick disconnects installed. Noticed I have a trans line leaking too. No puddles or spots on the ground but enough underneath to notice. Also noticed a bit of oil leaking from the filter, but hey oil change later this week anyway. Lots of work and parts to be replaced in the coming months.

Got them from Rusty's Offroad.

Rusty's has offered various forms of sway bar quick-disconnects over the years, but each design produced by other companies had some limitation of one form or another, so Rusty's decided to design and build our own! These disconnects offer ease of use, tremendous adjustability, unbeatable vehicle coverage, and major strength all in one package!

Rusty's Adjustable Sway Bar Disconnects fit JK, TJ, and YJ Wranglers, LJ Unlimiteds, XJ Cherokees, WJ and ZJ Grand Cherokees, and even CJs! Yes, they are that versatile, and hardware is included for every vehicle. As a result, you can buy these links for one Jeep and then swap them to another later as you move up in years and models! The adjustable design accommodates lift kits between 2" and 8.5" of lift, and they can be adjusted without removing them from the vehicle. The forged steel construction is exceptionally strong and has a similar design to our bulletproof Forged Flex suspension joints. Stainless steel and Grade 8 hardware round out these exceptional links. When hooked up and properly adjusted, they allow the suspension to function just as it normally would, but by pulling a couple of pins, you free up suspension flex for exceptional off-road traction. These disconnects work with all of Rusty's suspension systems as well as most other brands.

So, today i finished folding and straightening the bottom edges of the quarter panel. Stripped it of rust and paint for welding. Cut out the plate to go onto the quarter panel, then stripped it as well as smoothing the edges. And finally i got several stitch welds on to hold it on for now till i can finish welding it.

Oh, and put the bumper and one of the tail lights back on for maybe the fourth time this month.

The woman had a wee bit of a wreak last saturday and so she needed some wheels. Last Sunday i pulled a late night at Matts shop to swap rear axles in the 90 since the dana 35 was toast. (After two rear swapps due to bad Dana 35's, I think ive made up my mind on the dependability). I had a spare 29 spline 8.25 to put in it. Soon we will be taking the red one out to austin to pick up her Kia and bring it back to repair it. After looking at the Estimate. I can do everything except the paint myself.

I watched it rain, inventoried more new parts that arrived by way of the magic brown bus, and wished it would stop raining long enough to get something done.

Here's the header panel my wife surprised me with. I like the grill, but don't care for chrome on a green jeep. Trying to decide what I want to do with it as far as paint. I'm thinking plastikote, but I want to do something unique. Have to give it some more thought.

Now I need a fender. I'm thinking this one might make a good template for practicing trimming fenders and also up to the headlights. I think that looks pretty boss.

I drained and filled the trasnfer case. Only got 1.2 or so quarts out and it was just a dark red and put 1.2 or so back in until it was coming out the top bolt.

Seems like it is only a small amount of fluid but it is what it is.

We also checked the front diff, it was changed 20K ago and it looks fine which means I hope that everything is working correctly. I will change it in another 10K.

Only one tiny spot of surface rust. None under the black plastic part. Luckily the wet padding was above the patch of sound deadening, so no rust there.

I'm not saying anything.... My lil cousin got locked in my jeep the other night! HAHAHA

Yeah my passenger side rear door doesn't lock now and then... but the two times that I've managed to lock my keys in my Jeep (in the ignition both times) the door locked (go figure)... luckily the first time the windows were cracked, so I was able to break in using a coat hanger... I carry a Snap On master lockout kit in my Jeep... doesn't help me any when I lock my keys inside, but helps others... But I do carry a spare in my wallet now.. I never get out of my Jeep without my wallet either in my hand or in my pocket...

Locked my keys in it for the FIRST TIME :bang: I swear it was because of all the recent conversation about people locking keys in their Jeeps. I think there was some talk about it last night in the xjtalk show chat! &*()^%%&^*(!!!!!. Luckily, I was at one of my dealerships working and I went and snagged the service manager and he got his kit out and let me back into my Jeep. Whew! Dodged a bullet there! My wife would've had to drive a VERY long way after work with my spare :D

Power locks? Install a water proof momentary push button, like between the headlight and bezel. You'd have to have a long stick or something to press it. Hidden but allows you to unlock the doors quickly. You could also put it between the door and fender. Put heat shrink tubing on it so it will be all black. Same deal just stick something in there and press.

I have thought about doing this a few times... You'd be the only one to know it was there, unless you made use of it quite often!!

Do you have keyless entry? I was just saying last night i have never locked mine in because of my keyless entry. I HAVE to have my keys to lock it, er... at least the way i'm use to. Its just habit to use the fob to lock it and set the alarm. But i do like that idea Tony had too. Keyless entry might be a bit more versatile though, with an alarm. Especially where you live.

A bit discouraging today. I'm in the midst of fixing the rust on my quarter panels and what do i find under the carpet (which was a little wet btw), MORE rust. This part is pretty bad. Its the left side of the floor in the cargo area.

Several holes, especially surrounding the fuel filler panel and some by the "frame". :banghead: I just don't have the skills to fix this one, nor any real idea of where to start. Looks like it runs under the fuel filler panel, rear d-pillar, the bracing on the inside of the quarter panel and above the frame. My assumption is that i would have to remove several panels just to get to it. :banghead: :banghead: No telling what the rest looks like. Anybody know what all would have to go into it, just from like it is is the picture to being ready for paint?

Anyway, today i stripped as much as i could of the left side of the cargo area. Minus the areas where it would have ripped out more metal. And to help keep rain and junk out til i figure out what to do i put some seam sealer in the rust holes for now. Also out it around the seams in the quarter panel.

X2 on POR 15

They make a rust neutralizer and a substance that bonds with the rust so you don't to get to bare metal and will fill small holes like that. Then you can paint over it.

Pulled off the door trim the day before yesterday. It was falling off in a few spots on the driver side. Oddly enough, the passenger side was stuck on very well but the adhesive was way easier to get off on that side. Driver side was a pain.

Yesterday i painted the inside of the quarter panel. Took my grinder to the welds on the plate, and spread on some filler. Stripped the side of the "frame rail" as well as the shackle hanger. Then laid down some primer.

Looks great Jake...I finally got around to mounting my KC Daylighters I got for Christmas. I mounted them to my roof rack. I also cured my rough idle problem...my '92 would almost stall, then rev to about 1200rpms about a minute after I started it...was getting scary...I pulled out into traffic, hit the throttle...nothing. Almost got killed. So, I took some advice from Steve the Guru...O2 sensor! In the meantime, I've replaced my TPS, IAC, Coil, wires, cap and rotor and plugs (BTW...listen to the forum posts, and use Champion plugs...my 4.0 is running like crap because of the Accel Truck Tune-up Kit and "Super-Coil" I bought from Summit Racing...I'll be swapping them out soon). So, the 286k 4.0 is back to normal again!:D

Stripped the inner wheel well, ground down the edge of the fender, put some seam sealer on the folded over pieces of the fender edge, sanded and applied more filler to the quarter panel plate, put primer on the wheel well, got the flares mounting almost complete (just one more hole to drill, just have to get to the inside to do it), and began sanding and smoothing for paint.

Well, today I changed the oil, added Lucas, greased the steering, used white lithium grease on my leafs, searched for the source of my rattle/knocking in my front end with no real luck. I suspect that it's my adjustable trac bar, but not positive. This is frustrating! Also, on my wife's Patriot, I changed the oil and searched for her noise. Think I found it to be either the CV joint, or the whole driver's side CV axle.... stupid front wheel drive "Jeeps". Probably have to have a certified mechanic check that out for me to be sure. I don't feel like spending that much money GUESSING at it.

My jeep or my wife's? Mine sounds like loose steering parts when I go over bumps, but I can't get anything to move nor see anything other than the track bar slightly...

My wife's is hard to replicate. It usually happens around 30-35 mph. Bumps don't seem to matter either. I had the front end jacked up today during the oil change and shook the wheels side to side. The driver's wheel makes a slick clicking noise (seemingly from the CV axle) but the passenger side doesn't. However, when I rotate the wheels it's clicking and clacking seemingly where the axles go into the transmission. Is this the sound she hears? Don't know for sure, but it sounds like it.

4.3LXJ

What can happen to CV joints is that they get a little dry and get a worn spot in them in the straight position. Then when you make a slight turn, the balls in the joint bounce in and out of the worn spot. Not serious, but annoying

bigjim350
05-11-2013, 10:23 PM
CV's usually click while turning, have to be pretty bad to click while going straight. Bring it out the shop and im sure we can figure out the problem. A few shade tree mechanics equal one "certified mechanic"......
