On the road to work got a loud bang around @30mph when hitting hole on the road. No acceleration after that, rolled further and kicked to 4x4 part time, drove to next exit ~250m, left there. Called a friend and met afternoon, checked. Long story short, cross shaft and pin bolt was broken there.

After stopping, changed gearshift lever from D to R got a Another BANG again and no reverse. R to D - bang, D to R - bang :( she can not move at all. Called a friend for help and he arrived shortly. When I change gear, he inspect underside and said rear drives haft is turning, probably pinion gear teeth damaged and after short discussion we decided to open there. Opened rear diff and found a mess. The cross shaft was broken at bolt hole and cross shaft bolt broken also. One of spider gears smashed into pieces. Cross shaft slide to side and stopped against diff cover, so carrier can't rotate.

Previously I bought a ring pinion and master installation kit for re-gearing my rear end, now a time to install them. Removed damaged parts and we need to move to shop to repair. We can drive by front axle, putting t-case on 4x4 part time. The problem is, if we left rear diff without spider gears, axle shafts will move inside and c-clip will drop. Then tire will be free and move outside with the axle shaft. To prevent axle shaft movement, we have to add something between side gears. Found a solution and did. After short test drive, everything seems okay and we finally reached to workshop located 10km.

Bit of an online shopping spree today in preparation.
Set of 25mm billet wheel spacers to replace the scary/breaky cast ally things that are on at present.
3 carabiners. 2 x 25Kn locking screwgate & 1 x 25Kn straight gate.
1m x 1000kg lifting sling.
The carabiners and sling will be used for the planned 'winch entry' , I'll be ordering up the winch in the next couple of weeks, as there's no major rush (yet) but that could change depending on what mood the MS is in. :D
Hopefully get the spacers fitted at the weekend, I really want the nasty cast jobs gone !

I'm thinking my rear diff has an issue.

How to decipher between bearing and gear noise.??

Tried this, the noise persisted.

Sat the ol' XJ on some chassis stands and ran her in D while carefully listening around the axles and it appears the rear axle/wheel bearings are the culprits.

Thanks for the tips gents..

Been working on the jeep today to try and find the source of my wobbles. fairly new ball joints, rotated tires(helped a little), was at zero toe, put a little back in and that solved the low speed shimmy. But now I have one at about 50mph. I'm about to go and check my control arms....getting tired of not being able to drive it...

Had death wobble on both the 99 and the 03 TJ, replaced all the front end parts that had a TRE, including all the TREs. Rotate balance and alignment.

Frankly the front end parts was enough to fix the death wobble.

Tolerance is 3.7mm (0.146"), which means within spec 3.683mm - 4.318mm (0.145" - 0.170").

Started installation on empty differential case before bolting up of ring gear. If ring gear mounted to differential case, you can't install pinion (cross) shaft.

Actually this locker is for Dana 35 rear axle. Long ago I bought it but decided to upgrade my rear axle with C 8.25 and kept.

After receipt of new 4.56 gear set and differential case for my front axle, I remember this locker and checked. Once I read from forum, somebody installed Dana 35 lunchbox locker in Dana 30, but it was not an Aussie one.

Took Jeep for the required (every other year) California smog check. Passed easily. I'm $48 poorer.

Max allowed nitrogenous oxide is 571 ppm at 25 miles per hour on a dyno.

Minimum expected by state is 11 ppm.

Jeep blew only 2 ppm.

How is that possible? Catalyst is really working well I guess...

Glad it took me so long to get it done, got 35% off the part from Advance! :D They are coming from 3 companies in all, to get the best prices I could get. :rolleye0012: Including rotors, Ebc pads, parking brake hardware, gear oil, and I got the wheel bearings/seals since I am gonna have it apart. Also, since I was paying shipping anyways on one order, and needed to hit a certain amount for free shipping, so I picked up a 02 sensor, valve cover gasket, and 195* t-stat.

Still need to get the parking brake cable(s) though.

But I have now figured out that pretty much everything that works all the time inside the Jeep still has power, but the stuff that has to have the ignition switch turned on does not... so guess I'll be for sure dropping it off at the shop when I get back stateside in 3 months to get it worked out... if I don't find another XJ to build up first....

The old hatch struts can be used for the hood-lift mod. Provided they no longer support the hatch and are not leaking. New struts are too powerful for the hood.

Woo hoo!!! I can finally join in on this thread! :)

Took out this muffler:

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/17/agehutez.jpg

And replaced it with a Walker Sound Fit. The old one was fine, and is a good one, but too loud and too much drone. Guess I'm getting older:p. Not sure exactly what this one is. The number on it Googles as a Walker Sound FX, but that is a crimped muffler, not welded like this one. I really like the Walker Sound Fit though.

Did compression check on motor. Truck has 214K on it, but I am pretty sure the motor is very fresh. First of all it is really clean. Plugs are very clean and nice tan color. With these compression numbers I'm now very certain this motor is fresh.

Cylinder 1= 165 psi

Cylinder 2= 160 psi

Cylinder 3= 160 psi

Cylinder 4= 160 psi

Cylinder 5= 170 psi

Cylinder 6= 165 psi

Looks like I'm on a roll ! One of the UK based Jeep forums (birtydastards.com) has been coming up with the goods.
I had fitted a used 3" lift a couple of years back, but it's all gettin a bit tired, not helped with the extra weight that's been added over time. First was a fresh AAL rear leaf pack at a bargain price of £50, then just confirmed this morning, a set of 4 rough country +3" dampers for £60. Next on the list is a pair of +3 coils, I can pick those up new on eBay for £119. It all seems to be coming together nicely. :)

Last week I finally got home from Afghanistan and had to get the XJ up and running again. It would crank bit not start so I took everyone's recommendation and replaced the crank position sensor. That thing is a bear to get to! It took about 3' of socket extensions to reach and a second set of eyes to position the socket on the bolt. I'd I ever have to do that job again in going to cut an access panel in the transmission tunnel. Once the new sensor was in, it started right up. Thanks to everyone that pointed me towards the CPS.

Trimmed the plastic up in the front wheel wells, painted the braces and remounted the horns. Also, took off the fender flares to repaint as they are fading.

Decided on working on taking my steering box off as a bolt broke off in it when trying to unbolt it to install my new bumper. Moving it away from the frame I realized that the only parts of the spacer that were still there were the parts that had corroded to the bolts. So I ordered a new one from Iron Rock Offroad. Figured the 5-7 days it takes to get here should be plenty of time for me to figure out how to get the bolt in the steering box out. Figured I could pry the spacer off the bolt it is corroded to, clean the bolt up, weld a nut onto it and then see if I can back it out. Bought new grade 8 bolts to use when I remount it.

I'm surprised you had that much trouble. I mean if you have the LAE (long ass extension) it's not too bad, you just have to be really careful not to drop the bolt into the bell housing. ;o)

Finally got around to getting a pitman puller, but due to the steering box half out and hanging around getting a good enough purchase on the but holding the upper part of the pitman on was a PITA. I needed a little hillbilly ingenuity.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/22/bymyrenu.jpg

Hooked the winch up to the steering box to help it not move on me and then needed to find the right size socket for the nut. Luckily I have a set laying around to work on some of the farm machinery that worked.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/06/22/usydeqej.jpg

At last I was able to get the but off. Unfortunately the but end on the pitman puller didn't allow me to get a socket on it so I had to use a tiny little wrench and breaker bar to get it to work right. Got it all off and had to take the steering lines off from the top but the steering box is out and ready to have the old bolt drilled out and hole tapped. That is going to have to wait until after fishing tomorrow morning. Can't wait for this saga to be done to start a new one with my Jeep. Still have to get more vacuum line as well to mount the reservoir on the other side of the engine bay where I can get it screwed onto the engine bay without removing a bunch of shit to get my cordless driver in there.

My partners son swung by the house yesterday, he's 21, just finishing his apprenticeship, and has just bought a house with his girlfriend. He's a young lad to be proud of. :) anyhoo, I seized the opportunity and asked if he was free today. RESULT, he was. :D as arranged, he turned up this morning ready to fit the new billet spacers to replace the very scary cast 'skeletal' ally jobs that had be fitted by previous owner. I was expecting them to have bonded themselves to the hubs, and have a right fight to get them off. Luck must have been on our side, they just slipped right off.

This made the job a breeze, and 2 hours later, old ones where off, new ones torqued up with a liberal coat of stud lock and job was done.

Jeep is in Humble now. It's that Chris guy on Facebook. I'm trying to figure out title stuff right now, Jeep is titled in Florida and signed by the original owner. He says it's not dated, because if it is I'm passing on it. Not worth the hassle. I'm not buying it to keep it anyways, was going to fix it and sell it again.

Thanks bro. The wife is cool with it as long as we don't loose a single penny on it. The fact that this guy is taking so long getting back to me right now about the title info bothers me a bit. I won't even bother transferring the title to myself, but if it's going to be difficult and expensive to title it, I won't be able to sell it.

Well, my procrastination with posting here took over. Friday I did get the lug studs out no problem. I cleaned up the backing plates/caliper brackets and am surprised at the condition of them. Cleaned up nice with just a bit of scrubbing and some Goop/Gunk/IDK. Before and after.

5591

5592

And I finally got in all the parts I ordered for the disc swap. I do still need to get the cables for the parking brake and proportioning valve.

New rotors, calipers, parking brake shoes and hardware kit, Ebc greenstuff pads (which I paid most of thanks to the XJTALK Show! Amazon gift certificates :D ), as well as new Timken wheel bearings and seals, and replacement gear oil. I also have a, matching to the front, Riddler diff cover that will go on during assembly. I will be reusing the backing plates/caliper brackets, lug studs, and brake hoses from the zj axle. This is not cheap like I planned!!!

LOL alrighty. 1988 with a 4.2 Standard trans. 150k~ miles. I saw it on a Texas Jeep Parts page for $2500 and the guy had been trying to sell it for a while. It runs and drives but won't idle very well at all, plus it keeps popping out of 3rd and doesn't have a top. He had tons of calls on it, and numerous no-shows and tire kickers. He dropped his price to $2250 because he really needed the money. I asked him a few questions and talked to Matt about it. I offered the guy $1500 and he said if I'm serious about it, he'd take $1800. The wife agreed as long as I don't lose a single penny on the deal. I got the VIN and it came back crystal clear on the report too.

I showed up in the pouring rain and found a few things that weren't disclosed before hand. The rear driver's side corner had been hit, not bad, but crumpled a bit and had some rust. Easy enough fix really. The driver's floor pan is pretty rusted and needs to be replaced big time though.

Well, the jeep belonged to his father who just passed away and he doesn't have a job but has some court fees to pay (he's also in college). I knew his situation and didn't feel right offering him such a low offer and told him this and that he needs to take the $2800 offer from another guy. He appreciated it, but said that those are just offers that probably won't be followed through and he needed the money now and that he'd let me have it for $1500. After talking with Matt and figuring out the condition of the title, we made the deal.

I still feel guilty, but with the few issues it has and him insisting that deal was ok and that it would help him out immensely, I feel better about it. He thanked me so many times for helping him out. He was a really cool guy, he even offered to have his AAA membership tow it up to Matt's house free of charge.

We got it up there and checked it out and it seems one of the jets on the carb is clogged and that hopefully all it needs is a good cleaning and adjustment. We took it around Matt's subdivision a few times and MAN!!!!! Wranglers are FUN!!

Now it's a matter of deciding what to do with it. Sell as-is, spend a couple hundred bucks on a lift and such, or try to keep it lol.

Lol, thanks Josh. You know as well as many others on here do that my wife has me on a monthly allowance for a jeep fund. That alone tells me that she has nothing in her mind other than me getting rid of this thing, or selling my xj because she won't let them both exist in my possession at the same time. She's out of town right now and when I texted her that we are now the proud owners of a YJ, her reply was "okie dokie then". I know you can't discern inflection in texts, but I know there was zero excitement in that text lol.

I think the safe thing would be to put as little money into it as possible and sell it for a nice profit. That way you could show your wife that buying more Jeeps is a GOOD thing.

The fun thing would be to keep em both and have a blast riding around topless with the wife.

If it were me and I already had a economical and reliable DD I would sell the XJ for more than I bought the YJ for and use the profits to build it up a bit. That way you can still show the wife that it wasn't a mistake AND you get the fun of cruising around in a Wrangler with no top.

I have to agree, she may love it. Lots of women do from the groups i'm a member of.

But Jim, one thing to consider and one that has probably kept me away from wranglers a bit. They are much more expensive. There are none to get parts from in the yards. All the yards i've been to and not one ever had a wrangler. Some things are cheaper though, like bumpers. I have been thinking about flipping for a while and actually that have the reason i bought my bronco 2. If you can get a cheap 2-3" lift, some used 31-33s, clean it up, some corner guards for that damage, a light bar with some used lights if you can find a deal, and a few little touches will add up to a great re-sell. As you know wranglers typically sell well, and not cheap. And if you can make some parts that brings up the price but only costs the price of material... Like the light bar. But in my mind i don't see why you couldn't double or triple your money. :D

Good points, Jake. Bumpers are definitely cheaper, which I don't understand why because there's more demand for wrangler stuff than XJ stuff. Being a yj and not having coils, the lifts are pretty cheap too. Heck, I could probably even bastard pack some s10 leafs and get 4" for way cheap.

Where I'm at now is having all the parts needed to lift my XJ higher, then possibly be able to sell it for $4500 or so. That's 3k profit off what I bought this yj for. I probably won't find another wrangler in this condition for $1500 again, yet cherokees are plentiful and regularly around 2k here in Houston.

I've put a lot of work into this xj and I love it. I regret selling the last car I loved and the other one I loved got stolen. But the potential to love this YJ the same or even better is still there.

I'll have to spend money on the YJ for tax title and registration/inspection to even get it in my name.

Geez, I don't know.

You're going to have to title it to your name anyway, unless you know a dealer who will transfer it for you.

I had a thought that may work, depending on how you position this deal. Every woman should know how to drive a standard. Agree to sell it. Then start teaching her how to drive a stick. Go wheeling together. She may end up liking it. Best I've come up with.

Was to start the disc swap but forgot I needed to clean up the backing plates/caliper brackets and paint them, as well as painting the calipers and rotors (excluding pad surface of course). So after that I only had time to put the back end up on stands and get the shoes off.

Jim, the easiest and cheapest lift is the spring over on the YJ. But, since you are going to resell it, be sure to lengthen the panhard bar and hook it back up. Otherwise it will have bump steer.

Thanks Steve, Yeah I was looking at some of the spring over kits out there. Welding is not my forte unfortunately. I found a guy close by that has a 4" kit that has everything except the leaf springs. I'm getting it for $150. The shocks alone are worth more than that. So, the choices will either be 2" body and 1-1/4" shackles, or the spring over perches. Either way, I will buy from Mark because I owe him one big time and I know he can get me a good price.

I agree that I probably won't ever find another wrangler in this condition for that price. It doesn't need much, just a good carb cleaning and carb kit. (Would be switched to fuel injection if I were to keep it), it needs a new floor welded into the drivers side, and a new 3rd gear for the trans.

I would like to sell it later, like a year or so down the road, but we're going to be looking to buy a house possibly by the end of the year, so one of them has to go.

I did get her to promise that sometime in the future when everything is all set perfectly I can get another wrangler to keep. I'm ok with that.

My brother and I got a good chunk of work done to the brakes swap. Probably lost a few pounds in sweat too.

Old backing plates studs knocked out.

5645

Opened up the backing plates/caliper brackets to fit over the tube. Only had to get maybe a millimeter of clearance.

5646

Test fit the new bolts, and made sure everything lined up right. It did indeed, although I noticed the top two don't seat against the bracket very well. The weld is getting in the way a bit. Should I shave down the weld, or the bolt, or just not worry about it???

5647

Chris knocked out the original lug studs. I had to line one up next to a zj one. You can see the added height/length that helps with the thicker rotor.

5650

Cleaned up the end of the shafts, as well as the housing to paint them. Had a bit of rust built up I had to grind off to get the backing plates to sit flat.

5648

5649

I can feel the added breaking force already!

After getting monsooned yesterday I got back to the project at hand today.

I took quite some time trying to configure the routing of the "new" brake hose that goes to the caliper. With the leaf springs really in the way I had to pick a spot that is sadly going to put a little stress on the hose, hopefully no too much. Now, the ZJ axle had coil buckets, and that is where the factory chose to bolt down the brake hose. As you probably know XJs don't so I had to find a way to bolt in down. I looked around to see what scrap I had laying around... That old washing machine!

5667

So I robbed some of the structure, it was a brace that is a c-channel type metal almost 1/8" thick... Perfect! After debating exactly where to mount it for the least stress and not get in the way of the backing plate bolts too much I trimmed them to fit how I wanted.

5668

5669

Hopefully tomorrow i'll be able to get the welder out and zap these in. This is how they'll be placed.

5670

I also (for first time myself) got the sliding hammer out and pulled the bearings and seals out. Didn't put the new ones in so I don't ruin em with the heat of the welder. By the way, that seal puller didn't do squat! It just poked holes in the seal. I just let it come out with the bearing.

5671

I can really see why people truss or sleeve these things. Only about 1/8" thick! My light brackets are that size!

Got the made up brackets welded on, and actually in the correct spot! Our welding helmet isn't working right so the welds are lackluster at best. I wanted to use time now to get it right and not have to modify the actual hose brackets so if for some reason I need one I can just get a replacement and bolt it right on. That time may come and I may not have access to a drill or grinder.

Now all that's left is shortening the brake lines and mating them with the hoses, then comes assembly!

Spent some time trawling the bay of E this weekend. As you've probably guessed, I have a bit of a thing for LEDs. This is compounded by the fact, most of my Twitter timeline is made up of US Jeep feeds, with the accompanying stacked, twin 50" bars across the top of screens. :)
A 30" bar was on the hit list. I had a quick check on prices, and it seems on eBay UK, bar prices have gone into a bit of a free fall. I set an arbitrary figure of £70 (around $120) the hunt was on, and some cheeky offers and mails to sellers followed.
If you've seen any photos, you'll know there's already 40" x 200w and 20" x 120w bar fitted, so in reality, I have absolutely no need whatsoever for another one, but.... Well, ya know how it is. :rolleye0012:

I honestly can't see why this is taking me so long!

Rain delayed it a bit today, but I did get a few things done. I shortened the brake lines by about 6" and reflared the ends. The rental flaring tool had some really badly worn threads on the fork part, and on the last line they gave out completely. We'll have to see how that goes. But thankfully I had one that worked, although its not a double flaring tool. That's the reason I didn't use it, in case you were wondering.

5687

5688

Cleaned up the zj brake hoses to freshen up their look.

And with some much appreciated advice from Steve I installed the Timken bearings and seals. I must say, the Harbor Freight bearing and seal drivers worked great. Definitely recommend. (lame sales pitch over  )

Local laws is still valid, but he's half way around the world from us. Mongolia! :D

Put new tires on last week and got out on Friday and did a little wheeling finally. New job is going good but I don't get nearly the time to be on here. Gotta sell the new Bastard child Jeeps to the yuppies with more money than me.

as per regulation 2 rvm is enough, but I feel more comfortable with it, because side mirrors have very limited view :d

Drove it to work and wished for the money to fix the floors.... then wished the floors would fix themselves.... then wished for a rear driveshaft for my 4wd tranny and TC.... then wished it was already 4wd.... then wished that I wasn't going to work... but then realized without going to work, I would never have the money to fix the floors.

Now I'm back to wishing they would fix themselves.

So I've decided to put my new aftermarket bumper on today, didn't realize they hid half the damn bumper bracket bolts behind the rear left spring eyelet. Without getting out the saws all and going to town I'm not sure if I can get those bad boys out of there. To me this is shitty engineering.

I'm done. Honest. It's a nice step up, 20" 30" 40". The 30 should be just on rear view mirror height. :rolleye0012:

Alright, sorry for the delay. Had a few setbacks and had to postpone continuing for the last few days.

Monday...
My brother and i went over the process of putting the new parking brake hardware on the backing plates. I highly suggest taking plenty of pics before tearing apart the old ones. That is what we went by to get it right.

5725

Once they were assembled i bolted them up to the axle housing, with only a little drama. How come nobody told me grade 8 was so weak?!?! Tore the threads off one of the bolts tightening it down. Tough getting it back off, but thankfully i had spares.

5726

Happy i finally got these things on the vehicle i looked around them to check everything and noticed something that took away the joy i had just gained. The parking brake levers on the backing plates were contacting the new brackets i had just made for the brake hoses. All that time configuring it so i wouldn't have to modify the brake hoses wasted. So after some time mentally blowing up the jeep and and finding new nicknames for it i grabbed the cut off wheel and took a chunk out of both brackets and hoses to make clearance for the levers motion. And of course i had to fix the paint.

5730

Finally installed!

Check engine light came on last night as I took mine on a real maiden voyage. I think it has something to do with the sending unit. Need to get it to autozone to get the code checked soon. Also probably going to get the rear bumper off and start sanding the whole jeep to rattle can it with Rustoleum Bedliner.

So more driving today revealed that the passenger front window doesn't roll down from passenger controls, key fob unlocks all doors but passenger front. But the unlock buttons inside unlock all doors. Rear drivers side window doesn't go down from rear or front control. The brakes have a nice pulsating feeling to them. 2 out of 5 speakers work. Cigarette lighter slot won't power a phone charger. It is out of alignment. Last but not least it mysteriously takes on water somewhere on the passenger side. Guess after the bumper I will delve into the check engine light then rest of issues. I had a feeling a new vehicle would be cheaper, but less rewarding most likely.

Have you tried the ignition on/off/on/off/on trick to get the codes to show ?
(Or is that a UK market thing)
I can hunt out the code sheet from a UK forum if you can, and it helps. :)

So not long after my last post I looked at the weather forecast and remembered we lived in Florida and there is never a time in summer where there is a 8 hour block of time with less than 80% humidity. So we said, "screw it" ran to the store for more beer and started rolling. Here's a few pics.
