Hey 4.3L XJ, I have a 90amp FCAW and I'm wanting to just cut out all the sheet metal in the rear and replace it with 16ga steel diamond plate.... is that a recipe for disaster or is it doable?

Work started on Sunday. Easy job first, got the wire switched for Dyneema rope.
http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a519/Philxj4L/BF3CB620-6105-4E9F-8BFC-8817B3F57990_zpszu5qvjbs.jpg (http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/Philxj4L/media/BF3CB620-6105-4E9F-8BFC-8817B3F57990_zpszu5qvjbs.jpg.html)

Then the proper work started, with the norm for Jeeos. Rear damper top mount bolts seizing/breaking, and after much swearing the dampers and sway bar parted company.
http://i1281.photobucket.com/albums/a519/Philxj4L/F014407C-8F26-4DE8-9AAE-C33F85CB2F5E_zps9oldgmdi.jpg (http://s1281.photobucket.com/user/Philxj4L/media/F014407C-8F26-4DE8-9AAE-C33F85CB2F5E_zps9oldgmdi.jpg.html)

Next on the list was the rear flexi hose, it was at this point the Jeep chucked a proper tantrum. The upshot of that being, it's now going to need all the hard brake lines replaced along with the extended flexis.
This may take some time...........

why do people swap out cable for rope? incase cable breaks? no rust?

Philxj4L

Safer if it breaks (no whip back) much lighter, a lot easier to handle, and size for size, much stronger than wire. :D

Im trying to trace out my vacuum lines. my cruise control and vents have stopped working. now i using my sun visor to direct cold air at me. ive heard that there is a reservoir under the front bumper on the passengers side. i found it and a two hoses connected to a T. the T has one open plug for lack of a better word. one of the lines goes to the back of the reservoir and the other follows the passenger side of the engine compartment and i lose it on the fire wall. Any advice?http://www.xjtalk.com/images/smilies/bang.gif

If that ball has a leak, a common thing it needs to be plugged up or replaced. The symptoms you describe are typical of a vacuum leak and it is generally the hoses or reservoir

Looks pretty good.. I wonder what it'd look like with the expanded metal going all the way across the headlights and grille... But I think that does look good like you did it... and should keep from having debris hit your lights... I've seen some put it right on the lights, and think the way you have it would seem to give that buffer zone if needed and protect better... Love the front plate too!!

Nope. XJ's go for between 400 (old, beat 94 - 96) and 700 (decent 97-98) up to 1200 (pristine 2001).

I got mine for 625

Not too bad. There's quite a few online Jeep stores here. And as the pound is stronger than the dollar, it's often cheaper to buy, ship parts from the US.

And there's a strong Jeep community to find Jeep Parts. I had a towbar sourced for the XJ about 1/2 hour after i posted on a UK forum!

Haven't done anything to my new to me (but mint) 2001 XJ for a couple of days as I've been sick, all I've really done since I brought it home on Saturday is to freshen up the faded exterior trim with the heat gun trick and swapped out the hitch cover (sorry, I just don't identify as a Texan):

http://i.imgur.com/DQMWHT1.jpg

I've also been working on removing those stickers but they are really thin so won't peel off and need to be scraped off, need to remember to get some GooGone at the store as WD-40 and vinegar didn't seem to help. I have only managed to get one off so far. The only other thing was a heavy duty cover for the rear bench seat so the dogs don't ruin the seats, I was expecting the Cherokee to be more of a beater so I didn't have to worry about things like that but I scored big time with a close to new condition jeep so have to keep it like that.

I have a new stereo head unit (Pioneer MVH-X370BT) on the way from Crutchfield with the install kit + faceplate so that will be the first real project this weekend. I was thinking about replacing the speakers too but I don't know if that is really worth it, anyone have experience with that?

I replaced both the doors and the rear speakers in my 98, I did Kenwood 3 ways all the way around, and loved the sound.. If I was to get another 97+ w/ the sound bar or even a 96- I'd replace the head unit and speakers with Alpine and run an Alpine in line amp behind the head unit to get more sound out of the speakers, even in my XJ I enjoyed having a good all around sound to the audio...

LOL!!!! Glad to know I'm not alone in this. My jeep is still stock height, but I had the rear wheels up on ramps to get everything at a better height for working on. Incidentally, that was just the right height to facilitate excellent napping conditions. It was early morning (I had just got off of night shift) and the wife was still asleep, so I didn't even have to worry about getting caught. :bacondance:

Not really today but last week. Installed new lower control arms with new bushings. The old bushings were shot and collapsed. I did the whole arm instead of just the bushings because someone in the local Jeep club were selling both arms with bushings for the cost of a set of bushings. Ease of installation. New shocks also installed at the same time. Rear shocks just came in today so those and the upper control arm bushings are on the agenda this week before the weekend trip to Truckhaven Hills.

Next on the agenda after the front upper control arm bushings is to rebuild the rear suspension as well with new bushings as well as do some spring measurements to see if I need to replace the spring packs. If they're still good a 2in BB is going on. If not upcountry replacement springs are going in front and rear.

Big project is to repaint the Jeep in CARC Green with CARC tan highlights in places like the fender flares and bumper caps.

IMGUR is not cooperating with me today so no pics but over the last few days I have:
- applied the XJ Talk decal (pro tip: it is a decal so apply like a regular sticker, go over with an old credit card or other scraping implement and then peel off the opaque part of the sticker)
- got stuck for the first time on a sand dune that was slightly too steep, self extracted with TimmyTXJ's guidance and later found out that I busted the power steering pressure line hose while doing so
- diagnosed the odd whirring sound on the way home to be a lack of power steering fluid and discovered the power steering pressure line hose had leaked all the fluid
- ordered a replacement hose

New rear shocks. But for some reason one of the shocks I got was missing a lower bushing. But I didn't notice until I had already started to modify them for the poor man's bar pin eliminators.

So I pressed out the lower bushing from the old shock and put it in place for now. It's pretty mangled but will work. I fired an e-mail off to Monroe to see if I could get a replacement bushing sent to my PO BOX.

!!! Not best pleased. The Jeep had been running a second hand 3" lift for around 2-3 years. Having just got it back after replacing the lift and a few other jobs, unfortunately, it's gonna have to go back ! I got a pair of brand new Rough Country +3" coils, and I've actually LOST around 1.5" of height. The RC coils are soft as hell compared to the old ones. So back it goes to have the old coils refitted.

Yesterday it "wobbled" 90 degrees on me I thought it was gonna roll but I had space to regain it and this morning it wobbled again not as hard but with it getting consistent at 45 mph and above on any sort of unsmooth surface. I am starting with shocks and maybe a new track bar but I have no evidence of loose parts where there should be with the wobble.

The parts and tools came in today to swap out my power steering high pressure line hose, gave the threads a good soaking with PB blaster, took off the air box, swore a bunch, drank some beer and finally got the damn lower nut loose. Ended up needing both a 10" and 6" extension to get the right leverage, putting the new one on was pretty straightforward after that headache. Now TheWild is back on the road and the steering feels better now.

Replaced upper control arm bushings. Passenger side ones weren't too bad but still pretty dry rotted, but the driver's side ones were collapsing and coming apart. Guess that's where my thump noises were coming from.

Next on the list is Bumpstops. Then after that new springs on all 4 corners and new bushings in the rear for the new springs.

Dry rotted and some of them were collapsing
https://scontent-a-lax.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xaf1/v/t1.0-9/10704030_10205018625051447_719713721817826416_n.jp g?oh=0a4ab8173aa57ad05e268cf9937a997e&oe=54879F74

The new freshness, while I thought this one was going to be the easiest one and the one I did last it was by far the hardest one to do with the ball joint press kit. I spent nearly half my time getting this one back in out of the 4 hours I spent doing this job.

Had a little bit of time today so I finally swapped out the leaking heater control valve. The new Four Seasons/Parts Master unit had a small difference. The top connection is 90* clockwise from the original. A forewarning in case anyone needs a new one. I just cut about an inch and a half off and it hooked up well enough. I pulled my rear C8.25 axle from under my '99 XJ. Removed the Ruff Stuff cover and attempted to pull the C clip from the diff with no luck. I have the PowerTrax NoSlip "locker" and apparently this can be a PITA to remove. I ended up drilling a small hole (holes, really) in the C-clip and will attempt to pull it from the diff with a small screw driver or tap. I'll cut the PowerTrax from the diff if this does not work.

I'm attempting to install an ARB air locker with Viair OBA. I'm on this page because I want to purchase the locker and compressor through the Amazon link, but so far I have not been able to find it. It is almost as difficult to find the Amazon link (for the You Bought What feature) as it is to remove the C-clip ha ha ha.

Update: Found the Amazon link. Maybe it's my computer settings, but this forum is full of ads and crap that makes finding links and reading info very difficult. Suggest moving the Amazon link to the top of the page and eliminating some of the clutter.

Nice upgrade! The No-Slip is suppose to be good but ARB is better of course. :D

On the link i usually find it either on the home page or at the bottom of any page if i remember correctly.

Sent via messenger pigeon - i talk, he types.

I found the link and ordered a Heavy Duty Viair on board air system. We'll see if it makes it on You Bought What on XJ Talk ha ha.

The No-Slip worked well for the October NAXJA trips to Moab and Big Bear in April, but it failed on the Sierra Fest run in August at Deer Valley. I've rebuilt the front D30 with the Warn hub kit and chromo shafts, inner sleeves, and Synergy ball joints. I'm adding an ARB air locker for the rear C8.25. Yeah, I believe it will be much better than the No-Slip. I'm looking forward to testing it on the trail soon.

I broke a few parts on my D30 a couple of years ago on the Rubicon and took the opportunity to upgrade to the Warn hub kit with 4340 shafts. This is the lighter kit with 27 spline inner and outer shafts and I upgraded the front driveshaft to a long travel HD type while I was at it. Had I known better, I would have went with the 31 spline outers with the stronger hubs but that will give me something to replace next time I break.

Checked all fluids. Added 1/2 qt of oil and topped off radiator and reservoir. Washer fluid too.
Finally put in the reverse projectors I've had for close to a year
Aired down to 16 lbs for tomorrow's ride and calibrated 2 deflators.
Painted rear quarters where the trim was removed.

downsy
09-26-2014, 07:35 PM
With a magnet mount I'd just stick it on the roof. Much better ground plane up there. Not to mention that will constantly interfere with the hatch and without a tennis ball mounted on it it's going to constantly bash into the hatch.

Roof is ideal because it gives your antenna a full 360* unobstructed view but is not always ideal on the trail depending on your area. I did mine in a hood/fender gap mount and have had it mounted to the side of the hatch before as well which worked pretty good for me.

What's that box on the right and how did you attach it?

I went over the hobby shop and tightened everything down in the front end cause I had a knocking that wouldn't go away when sawing the wheel back and forth, and also pulled all the fender flares and re mounted them on the stud plates.

I really wish I could meet the engineer who thought those plates were a good idea and give him a good swift kick. Those studs are too narrow and snap if you look at the wrong. One of my back flares is being held on with two studs now and one of the fronts is held on with 3. I broke 4 studs off today. :sad0147:

What's that box on the right and how did you attach It?

Got it from eBay: New Jeep Cherokee XJ Cargo Box Steel Locking Storage Camping Tactical Lido Box | eBay

Attaches to the steel backer under the trim, you drill through the trim to mark the holes, take off the trim panel, drill through the steel backer, attach the bolts to the steel backer, cut away some of the padding, put the trim panel back on and then bolt the box to it. There is an option to bolt to the floor as well but it doesn't need it and I didn't feel like dealing with that.

Now I can stop snapping a pic of my license plate whenever I need to remember it like when checking in at a State Park.

Yeah im trying to talk the wife into changing my stock headlights to the rampage H4 conversion.I've been spending money on the jeep lately so it looks like i'll have to wait for my birthday. Spent the morning crawling around various junk yards looking for parts to do the hood lift thing.Found some brackets from the rear window glass on an isuzu rodeo for the 10 mm ball ends.I've been thinking of what you said Jake and i think once i get it all figured I'll do a write up with the parts i used and the measurements etc. :D

Today i gave her a good detail, changed the oil got a k&n oil filter, fixed the vacuum leak that was keeping my a/c stuck on defrost, also maybe fixed the cruise control at the same time. i havent had a chance to test it out. i ordered a retractable engine compartment light to replace my old one. im planning on ordering some cup holders too. however the screws that would hold it in place are missing in my 94 xj. could someone advise me on the correct bolts to buy?

4.3LXJ
10-04-2014, 10:17 PM
The screws for that can be gotten at the hardware store. I believe they are #10 screws. I cannot remember what kind of head is required for that cup holder. I cut mine up to customize it. But the #10 sheet metal or wood screw if you need a tapered head

Sounds great man! I know it'll be worth it. Just not having to hold a hot hood to slip in the prop is worth it alone! I probably would have went the route you are if i had known what to use so a write up will be very handy.

I've been having problems shifting I have a 94 4.0 5 speed. sometimes when i put it in reverse it will stick, ill push the clutch all the way in and it still wont disengage and i cant pull it out of gear by pulling on the stick, it also does this going in to third i think. if i let out the clutch all the way then re engage the clutch i regain control. however in tight parking garages reversing out of my parking space i have to just kill the engine. would that be clutch or synchronizers

Sounds like the master cylinder is going south on you. Easy to fix if you know how to bleed it properly

We don't have one here. But the procedure is to remove the old one. Then take the new one and bench bleed it by filling the new one and pushing the plunger in and getting the air out of the interior. To do this, put your finger over the openings for fittings while pushing fluid through until you get no air. Then quickly connect fittings and bolt in the new one. Then bleed the system by putting your finger over the bleed valve and have someone depress the pedal, and then seal it off while the pedal is raised. Repeat until all air is out of the lines. Make sure the reservoir does not run dry while doing this or you will have to start over

Went to the junkyard (a few days ago anyway) and picked up a passenger side mirror, 2 hatch struts (strong enough to actually lift the hatch when you open it), 2 OEM switch panels with 2 OEM switches each, an OEM clock, a washer fluid reservoir, and...... wait for it..... A SOUND BAR!!!!

Already put the struts in, the washer bottle (finally have working windshield washers after 3+ years of ownership), and replaced the mirror. I didn't realize that the 94+ mirrors were fixed and didn't have the spring breakaway. So on the driver's side I have an older style spring-breakaway chrome-housing power mirror (with no power hooked to it), and on the passenger side, I have a black fixed-housing remote mirror. LOL - it's definitely a Jeep thang!

The sound bar was the sweetest deal though. It has 2 6.5" Clarion speakers... I originally was just going to count it as a nice bonus if they worked... I just wanted the soundbar. Then I got to the checkout and the clerk said he wasn't going to charge me for the panel, just the speakers - $4.99 a piece - SCORE!!!! So now whether the speakers work or not, I got a soundbar for 10 bucks!!! I'll probably end up testing out the speakers and throwing it in tomorrow.

I told my wife about everything I bought and how it only came to about 50 bucks total.. she started laughing and said, "Did you have fun at Disney World?" It's true that, that place is like a candy store, a toy store, and a theme park all rolled into one. I'd rather go to a salvage yard than any one of those places any day. Always feel so happy when I come back home

Aired down to 16 lbs for tomorrow's ride and calibrated 2 deflators.

Curious what you cats think of my antenna placement. Does it need to be on roof?

Antenna is too close to the metal, probably will reflect RF back into the transmitter. Transmit and receive will be adversely affected. It really depends on what you use it for. Trail conversation between people up to a couple of miles you probably won't notice anything.

Getting "smokey" reports on the freeway, sorry that direction is blocked by a lot of metal and ugly bags of water. ;o)

Put a new oil pressure sender in the girlfriends WJ.

She was describing on the phone how the oil pressure was increasing when the rpms increased, and dropping down when at idle. I kept telling her that it was normal, and she is just used to having an idiot gauge. She insisted it was being weird and it wasn't like the times she has driven my XJ, but I told her she was just being hyper sensitive because it was HERS.

She got back, and I went and checked it out. It was jumping all over the place. Dropping down to zero, acting normal, jumping around, back to zero. So she was right and I was wrong. I changed out the sender and it's all set now.

Apparently, this WJ is not a fan of sensors/senders. Two killed in 4 days.

Finished my storage shelf:

https://i.imgur.com/KG0diaI.jpg

Decided to make it just a shelf instead of drawers as everything is still pretty accessible without them and the drawers would take up a lot of the storage space plus I don't like making drawers. It is just a sheet of 1/2" plywood cut to fit with three 2x supports covered in carpet from whatever auto parts store I was randomly at when I bought it.

The idea is to store most of my camping gear to make micro-adventures (instead of driving home after work drive somewhere to camp, camp overnight and then drive to work in the morning) easy, store my growing collection of recovery gear along with tools to do the majority of mechanical repairs in the field and standard get home bag kind of stuff. I lash an aquatainer on top so I have the most important thing accessible, however I need to look into pumps etc to see if I can make it more convenient to get water on demand as currently I need to unlash it, reverse the spigot, flip it and unscrew the air intake at the top.
