Installed a set of Rough Country shocks in the rear, found the bar pins were already an issue by previous owner, not sure how good his solution was.

Took pics to post, found out Webshots is now Smile and sucks, so need another photo solution.:bang:

I have those same shocks, they do well enough.
I also run JKS Bar Pin Eliminators. They're awesome.
For pic solutions, I use Photobucket for stuff I know wont see a lot of traffic.
For high visibility, or frequently viewed pics on forums, I use imageshack, ...but they have a 500 pic limit on the free accounts (I have two accounts now with them) :)

Both sites are very user friendly, and work well.

What's the reason for using different ones for high vs low traffic? Just wondering.

Got to take the jeep and trailer to the property in southwest Pa. for 3 days. Yes, from the pics,I had to put it in 4wheel drive. I took 6 bales of alfalfa hay, 200 lbs of corn, and a salt block for the deer. A good time was had.

I should have explained the PO's solution...it appears one bolt broke, so he drilled that out and ruined the welded nut, and then decided to use what appears to be M6 bolts dropped from the top, with regular washers and nuts. Not terrible, but not much "bite" on the bar pin either.

I guess I need to download the JKS instructions and check them out.

Photobucket limits the amount of "hits" or traffic, whatever you want to call it on any one picture from the free accounts... they'll then sever the link to that one pic, maybe temporarily, ....but either way, if its a popular forum/thread, and you have a particularly interesting pic... there's a good chance it will only be able to be publicly viewed "X" number of times.
Imageshack however does not put these kind of viewing restrictions on the pics in their free accounts.

:poke: Whatcha gonna do with the one you took out? :D

Well, today I installed my new rear wiper switch. Took all of a minute and a half maybe. Unfortunately, the wiper still didn't work so it looks like I need to find a wiper motor.
Also, I had to go be the boss today at a few other stores which are further away, and when I got home to the mailbox I heard some weird chirping/squeaking coming from under the hood as I checked the mail. (I own a house and I still have a community mailbox... I hate that.) Pulled in the garage and popped the hood... electric fan is making the noise. Seems like that's now on the list of things to replace.
I turned off the motor and I noticed that my coolant reservoir was loosing water from the over flow spout and I could hear boiling in the radiator cap for quite some time. The temps were about 227* according to my handy dandy bluetooth scanner but it never got higher than that the whole drive home. I'm thinking I need a new radiator cap... what do y'all think?

Before ya put out the cash on a new wiper motor check to see if you're getting a signal at the motor. Just to make sure its not a wiring issue instead.

With much helpful advice from some gurus on the site and the wealth of knowledge contained in the threads... I replaced the rear main seal. Now I'm pretty handy, and getting dirty ain't no thing for me (I generally enjoy it) but that has got to have been the most miserable job I've ever performed on a vehicle! I wasn't able to completely drop the pan but I was able to push it far enough forward to get the access I needed. Took me all day Friday to do it, but it HAD to be done!

To celebrate a job well done, I took the jeep on it's inagural drive around the neighborhood. (I haven't really driven it since I bought it for safety reasons). Everything seemed to go well except when I got it home it was spraying something from the front and hissing an awful lot. I didn't smell antifreeze, but I assume that's was it was. Looks like I'll be tackling the cooling system next!

So, after finding out my rear wiper switch was broken and buying a new one, my wiper still didn't work. Hadn't since I bought the thing. I figured I'd be buying a new wiper motor (especially since the arm was down past the window when I bought it and was stuck there pretty good when I moved it back up to the window). I took off the plastic hatch panel and unhooked the wiring connecter to the motor so I could use my circuit test light on it. No power. So I got to thinking that maybe the wiper wouldn't move if the hatch was open and I'd have to crawl into the back and test it closed. I really didn't feel like unloading all that crap, so since the PO had a bunch of fuse bungles even as I was looking at it to buy it, I decided to check there. I found the culprit and the wiper works!!!

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1172.jpg

The blade was all jacked up so it wasn't doing much good, so I remembered that I kept my wife's old wipers from when we switched her Jeep to the Rain-X Latitude wipers. One little snip down to size and voila! Nice wiper blade! Now I can't wait for it to rain again. I was like a little kid sitting there with the water hose runnin' on the back glass (giggling with joy) as I watched the little wiper that couldn't, turn into the little wiper that could and DID! rofl

Mine developed an exhaust leak this weekend... only at start-up and idle until it warms up, then ....good as new. I think it may be the doughnut coupler thing where the header meets the down pipe.... I'll be looking into it more this week.

Changed the oil for the first time with a "rapid change/flush special" - cheap filter, and "leftover" quarts of 10w30 from other oil changes. I'll run this for 500 miles or so (or a couple of wheeling trips) and change it to a decent filter and all one brand of oil, with oil treatment for the next 3K miles.

Checked the motor mounts, appear good, motor does not twist hard, but will change with the new one's PO left in the back. Noticed an exhaust leak I'll have to track down, and got to fabricate something to replace the exhaust mount that the PO broke on the cross member.

Made notes on what needs "real" repairs since the XJ proved it will work.

Also gonna install new transmission cooler connections on the tranny so i can eliminate the leaks goin on. Should be easy since the floor is still cut out on the passenger side.

New rotors and pads up front, rear pads and parking brakes, rebuilt the tranny, new fluids everywhere, new idle air control, ignition switch, 4 new tpms sensors, fuel system clean out, new fog lamp assemblies. Still to go... New used instrument cluster. Then I will have a brand new 2004 WJ.

I picked it up at summit racing a few years back. It's from Gale Banks Engineering. The one in the photo is a new improved model, the old one had a design flaw that made it crack at the weld. Here's the link you requested. The header has a warranty against cracking,if it cracks just contact them and they will replace it free just like they did for me.http://www.bankspower.com/products/show/415/97

Saw quite a bit of motor oil, tightened some oil pan bolts.

Changed O2 sensor on the front back to the one I had on before the engine change. See if this improves gas mileage.

Made a bracket and mounted the RAM gps mount to it and to the dash of the 98.

Checked oil, was about 3 quarts low, added oil.

Checked power steering fluid (it's been whining) it was low, added fluid.

Ok, so here's a 2 parter.

TODAY, I drained my coolant system and flushed it out with water because I only had straight water in there anyways, but it was starting to get rusty again. I then put the flush chemical in and I'll drive it for the week and flush it out next saturday and add actual antifreeze.

YESTERDAY, was motor mount/oil change day.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMG952012102295151832.jpg

I cannot thank TimmyTXJ enough for coming over and helping me with this... I never would've been able to do it myself, for the couple hour job turned into a 7+ hour job. My motor mounts were trash, especially my driver's side mount. OH! A special shout-out to bigjim350 for his advice on the phone while he was at work

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1187.jpg
http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1186.jpg

We started on the passenger side mount and the problems we ran into started almost right away. With the jack and 2x4 under the oil pan, we simply could not raise the motor and maneuver it the way we needed to. My engine was pretty far off to begin with. We ended up having to support the transmission and remove the crossmember and trans mount as well as using a spare jack handle as a makeshift bottle jack up under the passenger side to raise the motor enough to get the mount situated properly. Passenger side done. (We actually did not end up having to remove the oil filter adapter to do this side)

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1188.jpg

Now the driver's side appeared to be the easy side because there was far more clearance with the air box removed.... wrong. We ended up having to turn the transmission mount around the other way because when we put the mount in, my whole drive train was out of place. Once that was done and the crossmember back in place, we simply could NOT get the motor to move into place easily enough. So, with using an old mount as a fulcrum, we pried the motor up into what we thought was the perfect position, (the makeshift bottle jack wouldn't work on this side either).... Well, to make a very loooong story short, we noticed that the bushings on the new mount was hitting a small protrusion on the mounting bracket preventing the hole to line up perfectly to get the bolt through the bracket and mount. Bracket protrusion shown here:

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1185.jpg

We went back and loosened the passenger side mount, tried prying the motor, EVERYTHING... My buddy Tim working hard as I rested my shoulder for a few (old "motorcycle" injury)

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1183.jpg

We took a quick pizza break, which turned into a Jack in the Box break instead, and got back to it. We ended up having to trim the bushings by millimeters with my dremel to get the mount to fit past those ridges on the brackets.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1184.jpg

SUCCESS!!!! After 7+ hours of working on this thing, I couldn't be happier with the results. After Tim left, I put oil back in her and cleaned up. I went for a short test drive and my binding issue is gone!!! I do feel the vibrations more because of the stronger bushings, but I LOVE IT! I cannot express how happy I am with these mounts from ironman4x4fab.com, and the extraordinary assistance from Tim!

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1189.jpg

With these new mounts, I can come to a stop without it binding and having to pop it into neutral. I can also drive over the curb of my driveway without issue!!!! I'm almost ready to go wheelin... now I need to get that lift and the zj tie rods on :D:D:D:D:D

Well, as it always seems with me and Jeeps, I started on one project, and ended up working on another. And that ended up in a run to the Pull-A-Part for various stuff.

The power windows only work from the driver side master switch, so I dug into the passenger door to see what I could figure out. After finding out most of the plastic fasteners were already broke by the "yank until it gives" methods used by the former owner, I removed the screws on the inside and removed the panel, disconnecting the switch and lock handle. The door liner fell out, from where the PO installed the speakers and did not tape or glue anything back....:bang:
http://i.minus.com/iHsQhc7aqhTlx.JPG
I cleaned the inner panel and replaced the plastic fasteners with what I had.
http://i.minus.com/iZ1R30DLyCn3G.JPG
http://i.minus.com/ihUD6lYAsQNbM.JPG

And I checked the switch, and installed a spare, but the windows would still only operate from the driver side. I think the driver side "Lock" for the power windows is not working, gonna have to break out the meter and trace it down. And scratch my head over the Haynes manual wiring diagrams.
http://i.minus.com/igM3g4hjDJnhy.JPG

So I made a quick run to the Pull-A-Part and got a few more plastic fasteners, another driver side master switch, and various screws. And ran outta daylight.

Oh well. I need to locate a source for the plastic fasteners, because I know I will be in these door panels a lot. And I need a good method for attaching the door liner between repairs....tape?

The fasteners must be reasonably common to a variety of vehicle brands/models ... I bought a bag of 100 fasteners from, a supplier to panel & paint shops, down here ...

I swapped the driver side master switch tonight, no joy...not having luck with factory owners manual, got to locate a FSM. Is there a fuse or breaker for the child window lock switch? I may try to bypass it if I can clearly read the diagrams.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/IMAG1183.jpg

How do you find the vibration and noise transmission into the vehicle with these mounts fitted?

JJ

To be honest with ya mate, I had all sorts of vibes and noises from my busted mounts. Every bump things rattles and my transmission was binding with my motor at a complete stop. The bumps I hit made me feel like my suspension was loose or messed up.

More to the answer to your inquiry... I feel some vibes from the motor, I can feel my misfire a little easier. Noise isn't much different. Honestly, it feels like a JEEP! Everything feels tight and as it should now, the vibes are so minimal in my opinion that I kinda prefer them being there. One of the things I read was that if you want your Jeep to ride like a Cadillac, buy a Cadillac. That may be harsh and it's not my opinion because you CAN make your Jeep ride smooth if you so desire, I believe. Another statement I read about these types of bushings is that you won't notice the vibes after a week.

I took the back way home from work today because there are more bumps and more stops that way and every time I was going to go over a bump or come to a stop, I listened real hard and was beyond pleased. I kept fist pumping in the air LOL.

Having never even been in a Cadillac I have no idea what they ride like but as our Xj sees long runs, sometimes upto 8000kms (5000mls) on a trip I want things to work at their best and not be fatiguing....

Lol, well as I said, I don't fully agree with the cadillac statement that I read anyways ;). Those are some long trips! I think that these mounts would last longer because the rubber on oem mounts is softer and would wear out much quicker. were you worried about fatigue elsewhere on the vehicle?

I will bet the leak is coming from the roof rack. Will do lots of damage over time. Open tail gate and notice that there is no roof drain or air hole. Drill one and either remove (I took it off and glued on a new roof) the rack completely or re-seal on a fresh install. Chaulking the rack probably wont work. Take it off and reseat, drill a couple of hole just under tailgate so it can dry out. Good luck, check to see if your rear floor pan is rusting.

I used it to go jump the wife's Jeep. Had to leave work early and I didn't have cables, so I took my battery out and started hers with it. While I was putting my battery back in, some kid in a new mustang drove up and asked me if I'd be interested in selling my Jeep. I said, sorry but I love this thing too much! He just drove off. I guess I don't blame him... If I had a new mustang, I'd be looking to trade it in for a XJ too :D

Yes please. So what is wrong in the first pic that you circled?

In that pic, the circle is to identify the Power Window lock switch, but if you look at the two solder connections for the lock switch, to the left in that pic, even at that angle, they don't look "right" compared to the rest.

In the pic with the solder connections circled, they are obviously broken.

I wonder if this may be my problem some times my passenger window will not roll up or down. And my auto door locks dont work on two of my doors.

My theory on this failure is the PCB was not stout enough for the frustrated parents punching the Window Lock switch in order to enforce the "STOP PLAYING WITH THE WINDOWS" statement delivered to the children.

I observed the two fractured connections with a loupe, and with the switch housing braced (as if it was mounted) the PCB flexed when the button was gently pressed by my assistant (my wife) and the broken solder joints opened up. Do that multiple times, and that's how the joints failed.

51 O2 detects lean mixture. Check sensor and circuit and for vacuum leaks.

Recently changed O2 sensor (BOSCH 15704) and resetted PCM, exhaust manifold (1AAuto) replaced on July, 2012. Gas mileage is not improved, stayed as before ~9mpg :(

What would be reason?

I know that when you reset the PCM it usually is in learning mode for the first 50 starts after you reset it. So I would say if you are still inside that 50 starts window it will continue to learn and reread everything after you replaced the O2 sensor as you drive it each time for the 50 starts. If after that it stil doesn't increase any... I'd be at a loss as to what other issues could be. But one thing I am thinking is, if it is still showing the O2 detects lean mixture is that you either didn't get the PCM to completely reset or you might actually have a vacuum leak that is causing it to run lean, causing it to get crappy gas mileage.

Agreed. Dont go with anything from autozone. Duralast is ok cuz they generally have a good warranty but definitely not as quality as some others.

Last week we put an intake gasket and rustys airtube on it. Im back up to my 21mpg now, got as low as 17 with the bad gasket.

Just ordered calipers, rotors, and pads for the 8.8
About 80 bucks shipped from Rockauto. Wagner stuff, private branded closeouts so it was all cheap.

Looking for a different shock mount setup for the 8.8, I dont like the way the PO did it.

Need to figure out shock length, buy brake lines, and get leaf bushings, then Ill be ready for lift.

Drove it to get front u-joints for my son's F150 4x4 and pick up pizza for dinner, but it shut off on the wife and I like someone killed the ignition. Would turn over, had pressure on the fuel rail, but it acted like no ignition. The wife and a friendly state trooper helped me push it off the road (33's have ZERO issues with curbs with a little gravity helping).

Got a friend to come out, but finally got it cranked on its own.

When to the parts store, and had it tested...a 750 CCA Optima was only reporting 350 CCA? Ended up replacing the Optima battery at the parts store :o but they did it under warranty :D

Oh, and I trimmed my front fenders, drilled holes in them, and realized I did not have a long magnetic extension.....but the holes are for a reason:rolleye0012:

Changed out blower motor resistor, liftgate struts, and lubed up the rear hatch lock mech because it was only locking about half the time and was gritty and bone dry.

Failed at changing headlights and rear wiper blade, the projects that were supposed to be easy. Wiper was the wrong size and could not get two of the screws out on the headlight that's really dim. Soaked it in breakfree, hopefully I'll have better luck in a few days.

Also determined that I was going to wait on the windshield washer pump until I have replacement clips to hold the inner fender splash guard thing on, and figure I should probably replace the rear pump while I'm at it.

Yeah. :( I bought a case of purolator filters, and a bunch of 15w40 Rotella and Marvel Mystery Oil to start cleaning things up. Plan to do 3 1000mi oil changes with the Rotella and MMO, then pull the VC back off as well as drop the oil pan (it leaks anyways) and clean it out along with the oil pickup. Depending on how things look at that point I will make my decision. I can pick up a remanned head for less than $300 minus rockers so I may go that route if things dont clean up.

I would like to do a more aggresive oil change/motor flush but I'm afraid of clogging an oil passage, there was A LOT of crud on the head. :( :( :( I scrapped off everything I could and shop vac'd it up before replacing the VC. Otherwise it runs great, and has great oil pressure!

I wouldnt drive it like that, but it seems to be widely accepted...
I would let it idle for like half an hour and watch the oil pressure like a hawk. Let it sit for a while, start it back up and let it get to op temp and then drain the "oil"

Got my 8.8 brake parts today. Need to buy leaf spring bushings, brake lines, and shocks then Ill be ready for lift.
Gonna be running around with no rear shocks for a while after I get the 8.8 in, I want to redo the mounts so Ill have to measure after I get it bolted in. Im having a hard time finding shock mounts for 3.5" tube too...

Think Im gonna work on pulling my vac disconnect lines out tomorrow.

I washed it, and I did a good job. I take a wash rag, wet but rung out. The I wipe down all the seal, seats, dash, and the metal edges of the door and body. I get all the dirt off. My jeep is parked in the garage for the night.

Tomorrow I will wax with a spray on wax and armorall the seals on the entire car, like the doors.

I also washed under the hood to clean it up, its been a while since I have done that.

I also sprayed some pb blast into all the door locks and then put the key in and went back and forth for a bit to move things around.

I also put some pb blast into the little end part of the hood pull system. The hood wasn't closing on one corner. PB blast fixed it right up.

On a side note. Since I'm proud of myself I wanted to say this. I have sent in $1400 dollars to pay off a credit card over the last 3 months. $89 dollars will pay off the final amount on Nov 25th. Then I will be back on the cash system. Then I will be paying off another credit card within two month and my camper will be paid for in 6 months. IT's nice to get this stuff paid off. Just wanted to brag a bit.

I disconnected the battery so the lights would not stay on as it served as a tool bench for putting the front drive shaft in my son's F150 and installing a Rough Country leveling lift today. New lifted coils made that '89 F150 look a LOT better, looks like a 4x4 now.

But my son looked at the XJ on 33's (his is on 31's) and asked "How much lift would I need, Dad, to run 35's".:shocker:

Oh well, like father, like son.

Mine had Champions in it, who knows how long ago they were changed, the PO didn't like to do maintenance :P

Advanced didn't have Champions so I went with Bosch copper cores, but after getting home I noticed they were not true copper cores, they had some yrittium something or another but the Jeep seems to like them so far! They were relatively cheap too @ $2.29/ea

Changed my headlights today. Was still unable to get one of the screws out, but I carefully bent the ring out enough to get the headlight out and the new one in. Much better, my driver side was incredibly dim.

Also replaced both windshield washer pumps. Got all the plastic inner fender clips out without breaking any, but I'd bought 3 spares just in case I did. The old pumps were pretty haggard and non functional, and I managed to push on of the rubber seals into the tank. It was tough to get it out, but I eventually got it out with a bent coat hanger style piece of wire. Had to dump a full tank of washer fluid, which kinda sucked.

Replaced the paper air filter with a Spectre K&N style. Was going to get a K&N, but the Spectre was half the price and I'm sure will work just a well. The paper filter wasn't even that bad, but oh well.

My windshield weatherstripping was pretty dry and curling up, so I coated it with silicon grease. Hopefully it will make it better, but I kind of see myself needing to replace it before too long. I don't want it to hold water in there and start rusting and leaking.
