LOL this was all YESTERDAY but whatever.... Soooo I was driving the jeep home from work and I had a cart key word HAD anyhow I USUALLY have it on a hitch basket that I made BUT over the past few weeks I noticed stress cracks on the bumper cuase of insuffecient bracing so I decided that I really ought to beef that rear bumper/ hitch a LOT better soooo here is the progress so far
passenger side was a PITA thanks to the exhaust bracket but STILL got it in there and lil modifying to the exhaust hanger...

Its hard to see with this pic but that bent piece is a nut strip backing on the inside of the frame and the curved portion was to help tie in the bumper mounts But I need to revise that portion of the tie in
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo167/seivey/IMG_0670.jpg
Also you can see I had to bolt it UNDER the fuel filler hose
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo167/seivey/IMG_0671.jpg
but it all fit
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo167/seivey/IMG_0673.jpg
and Im a pimp casue check out how nice those cuts are with a sawzall and EYEBALLIN it
http://i372.photobucket.com/albums/oo167/seivey/IMG_0674.jpg
once I get everything bolted together I will fill everyone in and we will test it out with a nice heavy trailer.... and HOPEFULLY my dana 60's coming home from the junkyard!

Made upgraded battery cable:
- Battery to PDC - RED
- Battery to Starter - RED
- Battery to Block - BLACK
- Battery to Fenderwell - BLACK

I used 2AWG black welding cable and soldered heavy duty copper loops at each end and of course heat shrink tube.

Looks nice, that is alot of hear shrink tubing. How much did that run you? I recently up graded mine to 1awg.
Today, I'll be trying to figure out why my jeep won't start. You can jump start the starter and it will start. I have a good idea, just need to move some rigs around to take a look.

I equalized my shocks........

I'll explain.......I'm using 7" coils up front, the shocks are supposed to be for a 6.5" lift....lets just say I was'nt impressed with the length of the shocks, they offered 8.5" of up travel, & 3.5" of droop..........now keep in mind, the 35.5" tires bottomed out in the wheel well at 6" depending at very best.

Pic shows WAY to much exposed shaft.

I whipped up a set of our FSC's....(Front Shock Cheaters)....with a finished size of 2"....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/Detours/ShockCheaters008sml.jpg

And I obviously installed them........
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/Detours/ShockCheaters009sml.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/Detours/ShockCheaters010sml.jpg

Install takes less than 10 minutes per side, the FSC's are designed to cheat your shocks when adding height or actually taking the time to equalize your shocks for best performance.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v649/Detours/ShockCheaters011sml.jpg

My XJ's shocks now 'just' rub up in the wheel well, and I gained atleast 2 additional inches of droop.........the shocks are now tuned to the body as best as possible. Diggin it!

Mudderoy
12-30-2010, 05:50 PM
they offered 8.5" of up travel, & 3.5" of droop

So does this mean that you now have 6.5" of up travel & 5.5" of droop?

DETOURS
12-30-2010, 06:32 PM
In that range.......yes.
My droop was estimated by shock body and ammount exposed.
Basically, theres no waisted shaft in up travel, why bottom out with 2.5" of shaft still exposed on the shock? Dosent make much sense.

I drove my Jeep (since the Mustang is down) to pick up our girls. I drove about 50 miles down I-10 and Beltway 8. It was about 68ish today. If I drove about 65 miles per hour no heat creep. It I pushed it up to 75 the needle would get up to 210. I hit the aux fan switch and the temp dropped slightly.

I THINK the dana 60's have been down sized to 44's... Im having the hardest time finsing a 4x4 front d60... if its THIS hard to locate one to USE how hard will it be to find one for spare parts???? we shall see... Im going shopping this saturday for the axles, we will see what I come home with... I have already found a nice rear axle from a 95 f250 with the correct bolt pattern... cant read the tag to well to see the gears but that will most likely change anyhow... I will let you all know saturday night, that is if Im not whooped from the removal at the JY!

you have the d60's from all three of the major manufactures, GM, ford, Dodge, dont forget about the 1 ton vans for d60s in the rear. Also, if you stay under ~38s you should be fine with non-kingpin axles.

Yes, the rears are refered to as STM's.... http://www.detoursusa.com/xjstm.php

The fronts will be refered to as FSC's when put on website.
They fit XJ/MJ/TJ/Rubi's with the D30 or factory D44..

Well lets see. Morning started off rough with a lower radiator hose blow out. Got that took care off then took a nap. Got up decided it was finally time to put on my valve cover gasket. Check did that. Then I decided to find out why it takes like 20 minutes for my heep to get to operating temps. Low and behold someone before me took out the T-stat. So, I hope to pick one up in the next couple of days and install that. Then, its time for a tune-up and possibly time to replace the rusted out muffler.

I put my jeep on the hoist to take a look at my front end growl, front pinion is toast, seals spewing gear oil and a little too much play.

Decided, I am not going to bother rebuilding the front pinion right now, got a lp30 with 4.10s to put in to match the 8.8 i have my eye on if that fails, Ill throw in the 4.10 ring and pinion til she explodes. The 30 is coming out of a v8 zj, so im swapping everything over to replace my setup, figure the tie rod is worth it and its just as easy to leave it all attached.

I installed my cupholders today! Purchased them from the dealer, accessory cupholder Mopar #55115020 just the other day, $19.75 + tax. It snaps in to the side of the console ( I have a '94 ), but I drilled out and put in trim screws for a nice, solid install. I have a starter and a valve cover gasket to put on, but it's too darned cold to lay in the snow!

It can be done but not worth the time. You would spend way more of you time to do the bearing swap than just swapping out the bearing. Just dont buy the cheep shit. Get the BWD brand has a life time warranty. Let me know what they get for them by you, and I will check my price. I have a Commercial account. Save you some $$ maybe.

Ok I wanna referees my info here. If you are replacing bearings on a trail rig only, then you can use the cheep $99.00 bearings. But if you drive it everyday. Go with a lifetime warranty. So no matter what you put it threw road or trail the place you got it from will (or should replace it) .. So I do all my business threw Orielys auto parts. Been with them for 8 years + now. So if you have a problem let me know. I can talk to the big guys there and put a bug in there a$$. Let me know if you have questions. :stars:

I believe there is a tool for that, or one that you can make. I'm trying to remember where but I believe I saw them use it on Xtreme 4x4.

I thought about a ball joint press. But, not sure that it has a big enough cup to fit the metal housing of the bushing.

I thought about a ball joint press. But, not sure that it has a big enough cup to fit the metal housing of the bushing.

This thing was like a metal cylinder with a bolt in it. I noticed it because I changed the really bad one on my Dana 30 but I did it with a hammer. Sucked!

I just did a quick search for the tool. Nothing. Basically it's a metal pipe with a diameter greater than the bushing, a plate that goes on the end and a long bolt that goes through the bushing. It goes to another plate on the other side of the axle UCA hole and basically using the bolt. One plate would be larger than the UCA hole the other smaller. The smaller one would allow you to remove the bushing, the larger one would allow you to install the new one.

Well, what we have been working on this week, I went to the salvage yard and some one who was parting one out. We rounded up lots of missing odds and ends. Like rear wiper motor and blade, stereo, valve cover, muffler w/tailpipe, front bumper, interior parts, I can't list everything. Bought a new heater resister, speakers, thermostat, transmission cooler lines.
We have been working on all this through the week. Also did the repair on the drivers door hinge. Got to get it back out on the road so my son can get some driving in. He is so stoked. We have been working on it together almost every night this week.

I had posted yesterday I though my slave cylinder had gone out on my xj,,,,,,well it wasnt the slave cylinder,,,,,,,was the Clutch Master Cylinder. It was bypassing and not holding pressure. I could put my foot on it and slowly the pedal would go to the floor and if it was in gear it would eventually start moving. Glad it wasnt the slave cylinder since its inside the transmission. But I changed the Clutch Master Cylinder when I got home from work today.

All but one lug nut would come off and I rounded it off with a breaker bar trying to get it off,,,,Finally had to break out the blue tip wrench and burn it off,,,,,,kinda screwed up my rim. They are the old Aluminum Jeep rims,,,,didnt mess it up so bad I cant use it though,,,it will clean right up. Sure made a difference,,,,the front shocks were shot,,,,,,,I took the nutt off the top and they fell right down under the fender well, I was pretty much riding on the springs.

went shooting this week end and had a little fun with the jeep in the snow/mud slush.... then I see this little hill that I absolutely have to try...
First attempt.... don;t make it.... so I go around and take some speed... get all the way to the top and do the stupid thing... I release the gas.... and start rolling backward.... no traction whatsoever.... turn out I was just in 2WD and the 4x4 didn't engage... I kind of suspected it based on the drivability of the jeep on the slush ....

Anyway I got stuck in a snow hole and had to be pushed out...

Once home I look around the jeep and internet and found this thread about a D30 CAD bypass (http://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/free-d30-cad-bypass-91-a-38629/)...

Took me about 1h (well really more like 2h because the fork would not slide to the locked side).... and now it looks like I have no problem getting in and out of 4WD...

I am sure that this is a temp solution that will remain for a long time and that more problems will develop down the road....

Took my son out driving in the snow storm today,:driving: made him drive half the time in two wheel drive. Now he knows how to slide around, counter steer and back off the gas a little to straighten out the Jeep. He also got to see how easy it is to lock up the brakes and go into a slide. (Coached him on how important it is to learn how to ease to a stop and to tap the brakes when necessary some to avoid locking them up on the ice.) He did pretty well for his first time in the snow and ice. By the way our tires have 1/4th their tread so he did have fun learning. (But the rears are studded so that did help a little)

went to change a brake light bulb... found out that there are 5 different bulbs..... OK I knew the brakes and the lights and the blinkers.... that is 3... oh no 2 because lights and brakes are the same.... so I started reading to find out what are the others lol... welll side marker (check changed the bulb on one side and cleaned connection on the other).... another driving lights... check just had to clean they all work...
i am left with the last one...

WHAT there are backup lights ?????? So all my bitching about the fact that "They could have put at least one backing light so I can see when I back up at night in the driveway was pointless ????)
both sides bulbs were shot so I changed them.... still not working... I read about the backup switch (never knew there was one... ) and now I am waiting to have tme to see where is the problem...

and I decided that it would be cool to have rear speakers so I installed them back....

changed the water pump, because it overheated on me yesterday. apparently ya need fluid in the system...go figure.

So today i finally get it changed and turn it on. I put antifreeze in the system and back in the reservoir. I start it and it starts fine. Im checking the temp guage and i have the heater turned on. So im waiting....then finally it gets just to the left of the middle mark, 210, but i still dont have warm air coming out of the vents...weird....

So i check the upper radiator hose...still cold...

So i go back and the temp is now in the normal position just to the right of 210. I go and check the hose again, now it is warm, and then the air is now hot.

But wait there's more... During this time i turned off the jeep just to check my bolts on the water pump pulley. When i went to turn the jeep back on, it would just crank and crank, so i was pumping the gas and then finally it started....weird....

So what could cause the air not to have heat, and me not being able to start it right up? Remember i just started it like 5 mins before and it started on the first turn of the key...

WHY DO YOU HATE ME JEEP gODS!!!!

It wasnt low on fluid but it must be bypassing in the cylinder itself or something,,,,,,,gonna change it before it goes out on me in Houston Traffic,,,,,,that would be bad.

Was lloking back and saw this... Mine does the same thing and has for almost a year.. I have allways just pumped it a few times to build the internal pressure back up and everything woes fine... I think its just leaking past the internal o rings... Should be okay

LUCKILY I had enough momentum to get the front tires back up the other side or I would have had to swallow my pride and call a tow OR Tony as an anchor point as there was LITERALLY nothing to hook onto within 100 feet!,
I didnt get pics cause like I said i shouldnt have been out there and I needed to split before the fuzz showed up! but needless to say the hole was DEEP and ALLLLLLL loose dirt so traction was a HUGE issue!

I got the muffler and tail pipe that I got off a Wagoneer in the salvage yard, mounted onto the Jeep this week. I decided to see what a shop down the street would charge instead of me trying to tackle it. They only charged $65 to do a great job. Since it is a little larger than the one I had on it before it still sounds throaty and better yet no leaks!!!
