Nah ;). I was hoping for a darker green color though more along the lines of OD Green. My Lowes doesn't carry the camo paints though i went with "matte Spanish moss" i think the matte otter brown would have been closer ha

Replaced the rest of the window seals and the lights i was originally going to put up front are too large to fit in the stock locations so im going to get another set for that and repourposed these as a rear and and undercarriage light. And wired up my fan bypass that ive been putting off.

Long ago my windshield washer spray nozzle sprayed overhead to rear vehicle :D and I added small metal shade on top of it to correct direction. Decided to replace with one from Toyota in original location.

removed old nozzle and drilled, filed a notched hole for new to me nozzle.

both nozzles replaced and now I can adjust direction :D

Got my first oil analysis on this Jeep back. Looks like its got a coolant leak at he head which is probably whats causing the increased bearing materials in the oil.

Im seeing no signs of losing or burning coolant though. No drops in radiator or resiviour levels, no sweet smells from exhaust and no evidence of coolant in oil. Im going to do a test strip test on the coolant and see what it says.

Looks like a top end refresh may be in my future. :/

I like the awning... I've thought of doing the same thing with mine... well if I ever manage to plan out camping trip again with the XJ... Haven't been camping in far too long... Little one is starting to get to the age now I think we can get away with going again... Going to have to look into some old logging road/trails and seeing what I can find in the mountains to hit up once the warmer season comes... if we don't continue to get water logged...

I installed the headlight wiring harness upgrade from KSuspension this past weekend. The lights are much brighter and work great. The only thing is now my right turn signal now blinks fast like it has a light bulb out. I’ve checked all the bulbs and they are functioning properly. Any idea what may cause this? I’ve read that in some of the 97 XJ’s you may have to replace/upgrade the turn signal relay under the dash but that was to correct an issue with the high/low beams. Mine are working fine. It’s a 2000 XJ.

I would just upgrade the flasher. If nothing else is wrong, the heavy duty flasher made for towing and extra tail lights works great. I have been using them for years. But beware they will work with only one bulb so don't expect it to tell you when you have one out by not working

Yes it makes a huge difference. I did a visual inspection in the day time so I have not taken the bulb out of the socket. Yes they are stock bulbs. Odd thing is prior to the install, the right turn signal worked just fine. I’ll check tonight when it gets dark and try to troubleshoot this weekend. Thanks for the tip.

Digging the pizza oven!!

While doing pre trip inspex on the rig, found this driver upper arm that had seen better days. Went to local yard, wasn't a single XJ left. There was one wrangler that had been stripped and few Grands. So if you've been thinking about hitting up a JY for some cheap parts, call and make sure they have XJs around.

I found the arm on the shelf at O'Reilly's and they had the taillight I needed the next morning.

Can anyone explain the difference between the 4 part time and 4 full time? My 2000 XJ only has the Part Time. Can I simply swap a T-case and get the full time?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

4.3LXJ

The main difference is that the NP242 tcase has a differential in it that allows an additional gear called full time 4WD. It acts like the open differential in your rear end that allows the front and rear axle to be engaged but travel at different speeds. The full time option locks the drive shafts together so that they have to travel at the same speed. Thus you can use the full time option on wet or dry pavement without damage while the part time you cannot without risking damage

weimgl
04-15-2019, 06:25 PM
Thanks for the explanation. So is the additional gear in the T-case or is it in the rear end? Why is it risking damage to the Jeep if you run on pavement with 4WD part time? I thought 4WD was safe to use on wet pavement like in a rain storm. Am I understanding this correctly?

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

4.3LXJ
04-15-2019, 08:00 PM
Not quite. 4WD part time should only be engaged when extra traction is needed, such as off road, snow on the road and other situations where extra traction is needed. If done on dry pavement slight differences in rotation speed from tire wear, turning etc will put tremendous pressure on the drive train. One of two things must happen. The tires have to slip or parts break.

The rain storm conditions where pavement is merely wet is a good place for full time 4WD where the extra differential gears in the transfer case compensate for differences in rotation. However if you are in very bad conditions, such as a mud hole or deep snow etc then you would use the other option of part time 4WD

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkYes you can swap from the 231 to the 242. For a 2000 you'd need to find one from a 97+ with the same transmission. Driveshafts are the same. The reason for the year range and transmission are input spline counts.

If you want the shifter in the Jeep to make sense youll need the shift bezel and shift gate. This isnt absolutely needed but rounds out the swap nicely.

Some also go through the trouble of wiring up the full time light on the dash as well. Again not needed but a nice touch for the swap.

My biggest problem has been finding a 242 locally.

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkYou wont find one in a TJ. They're all 231s with exception of the Rubicons with the 241OR. I believe that ZJ and WJ 242s will swap but youll have to verify input shaft and output shaft spline counts.

You can swap some 242s from the WJ. The input on the ones from a 4.7L V8 are too long, but can be changed out with your old input if you are willing to take them all the way apart and reassemble

Not what you want to see when you park at a store on the way home after a 9 hour training session. Apparently the electric fan was ever so slightly rubbing on the transmission cooler feed line one part of the fan's frame has a break and allows a small amount of movement. Apparently it was just enough to contact that line. It ruptured somewhere betwern I30 and the walmart neighborhood market dumping a gallon of DexIII all over the place.

Luckily the wife was home and came to my rescue so i didnt have to walk all over town. a gallon of DexIII and a line splice later i rolled to the pay and spray and hosed all the trans fluid off the Jeep.

yea it got pretty hairy on some of the steeper trails. Finally had to bail on a trail when it got bad, was popping it into reverse quite a bit to slow it down. It would still stop ok on level ground, but any decline and it just wouldn't stop. Glad it happened later in the day, we hit it up a bunch of trails that had some rough drops.

getting ready for 4 discs as well.

Pulled the tcase and tore it down for a rebuild. Going back together today gotta swing by the parts store and use their pilot bearing puller. There are marks on the inside of the case where the chain was dragging on it.

It actually looks like the case was rebuilt at somepoint but the chain wasnt replaced.

seems within spec ( Alldata said 120-150 PSI average), but I have a some bump while idling, noticeable vibration when stopped on D, if I shift to N vibration decrease but still there, plus mpg is horrible in city traffic.

1. checked coolant temperature sender on thermostat, values are little below from popular chart of jeep 4.0 temp sender resistance vs. temp
2. exhaust tip is hot, I cannot touch it but, if I spray water, it will not vaporize immediately, just dry out very quick
3. no OBD code other than 55
4. all senders are replaced within 1 year (coolant on thermostat, intake air temp, O2), IAC & TPS, distributor cap, rotor & wires

today replaced old Champion RC12LYC spark plugs with 7252 NGK FR5-1 and PCM resetted, will see

Scooped up some wing windows and a vacuum canister from a parts Jeep today. Vacuum canister is going on the shelf as a spare part and at least the wing window is going on the driver's side. NOt sure what I'll be able to use from the passenger side unit to refresh the driver's side unit.

Anyone know where to get parts for the wing windows? The Passneger side one I got is still tight but could use new seals and the driver's side one needs an overhaul.

Head light upgrade

Hello - I recently installed the headlight harness upgrade kit from K-Suspension on my 2000 XJ and I am running the stock head lights. What kind of headlight upgrade can I get that will work nicely with the harness upgrade? I’ve heard of H4 conversion and silver star but I’m not sure what that is. Can someone give me a suggestion as what direction I should go? It’s a daily driver and is all stock.

Thank you!

Yes, the H$ upgrade is the way to go. You will need to get new housings to do it. I had to enlarge the hole in the housing bucket to do it. Once there there are options. You can go with IPF Fat Boys that will give you lots of light, or HIDs, but you will loose your bright light function. Or you could go with LEDs, but be advised not all LEDs are created equal. You will want the Phillips bulbs for that. They have to have the small chips in the exact same position as the filaments on regular bulbs to work right

What do you mean by I will need to get new housings? Do the IPF Fat Boys plug and play with the new harness? What does H$ mean (I assume harness)?

Right now you have sealed beam headlights. They are the entire bulb. An H4 housing is one that accepts an H4 bulb, which is already brighter than what you have now. The best ones are the Euro style which give you a projector headlight type beam, with a cut off so you don't blind others. One I would recommend and will get myself is the Hella housing. I have some cheaper ones and they need to be replaced. Anyway, once you have the H4 housings, you can go with any of the H4 aftermarket upgrades and yes, your current harness will plug in to those bulbs

H$ = H4 when you hold down the SHIFT key for too long. :p

As Steve said your current headlight is a housing and bulb in one, H4 bulbs are removable from the rear of the housings so you will need the H4 housings for your Jeep should you decide to upgrade to that style of bulb.
I went with LEDs on one of my XJs and the low beams were a vast improvement over stock even with the stock harness, I may go with H4s on my other XJ as the Hella H4 Conversion is about the same cost as the LED headlights I purchased previously.

Replaced the axle shaft seals on the Dana 30. I was starting to leave a small spot of gear oil on the work parking lot every shift. Also knocked out the tire rotation at the same time. Then hung some Jeep propaganda up in the garage. Got a laundry list of stuff on the VSTROM that needs to be knocked out hopefully this week and I really need to get back in business on that GS850G.

oh!! someone with actual wisdom, I should've asked you first. got blisters on my fingers from googling on several forums.

so it sounds like I need to run single piston calipers in rear, 2nd time I'm hearing this. you don't think I could control it enough with a prop valve? I sorta assumed calipers were like dollars and sunsets.

You can run as many pistons as you want. But your brake system needs to be balanced to about 60 - 40 or 70 - 30. The brakes I am using are already balanced so I used those.

Hmm. I just can't wrap my head around brake systems. a 37 is almost 20% taller than a 31. way more rotating mass and rotational leverage working against the brakes (I don't feel like doing all the math) but I'm thinking it's would take almost twice as much braking pressure and volume to stop a rig on 37s.

I'm going from 2 calipers up front to 4. and likely a single caliper in back. just seems like more pressure would need to be applied (and more volume) but the stock system is ok for it.

I take your word for it, just doesn't make sense to me... I've read a few in depth articles. but at this point just trying to get it back together. Thx buddy.

So since I needed the rod ends same day and NAPA was closed I bit the bullet and went to Autozone which had one Duralast Gold TRE but not the other side so I went to Orileys and got their only avaliable one for the other side which was their house brand. We'll see how long they last. The steering damper I had picked up already before starting the job and just grabbed it from Napa.

Had an issue with blower motor since last winter. 25A fuse, thermal fuse and longest resistor of blower resistor frequently blown. After that I rewired relay and switch directly to blower motor, blowing high speed only.

replaced everything related to blower, blower motor, blower resistor, blower speed switch and mode selector etc, still got fuse blown. in weekend, checked all components by replacing them one by one and later wiggling wires, found that, a green wire at blower resistor short somewhere behind dash panel/glove box. Have to remove dash and check all wires, but it will took whole day, based on youtube videos. Are there any easy way to reveal those wires without removing dash panel?

I have never found the design for the blower circuit to be satisfactory. Draws too much power for the resistor and blows fuses, burns up switches and connections. I would be happier with something else, like a real three speed motor instead of resistors

So, I'm not dead yet, but nothing got done to either the WJ or the XJ. The WJ is still sitting, waiting a solution to finish pulling the front axle to complete front coil bucket repair, and the XJ is still waiting on a decent set of knuckles and a repair to the plastic fuel line.

I've pretty much had it with not having a decent place to work on our vehicles and equipment, and have made it clear I am doing something for a work shelter, even if its a concrete slab and one of the cheap metal carports tall enough to clear the jeeps and the lift I don't have.

I have picked up a new Titanium Flux Core welder to replace the HF Chicago Electric unit, since my savings for the Vulcan Omnipro 220 kept being spent on life's disasters.

So I hope to actually post something being actually being done to one of the Jeeps in the next few months, it would be nice to drive something with A/C, instead of my little Ranger farm truck, which I will admit to driving more and more like the little Renault R5 Jason Statham trashed in the first Transporter movie.

Don't feel bad. I have the shop, but not the money for the extensive project I have planned. Getting the money, but too slow. So I just keep taking mine apart and doing little things that improve it, but not so much you would notice. Pulled my gas tank yesterday so I can put baffles in it. Tired of the gas gauge jumping back and forth when the fuel sloshes.

I hear ya....I used to check out the Garage Journal forum a lot to look for ideas to tame the mess the attached too shallow two car I have, but got tired of seeing all the build threads where they had a ton of money, a ton of spare time, or 15 capable friends to help "throw together" a complete pole barn kit for less that one of the metal carport-style garages.

The XJ and WJ loaded with parts I can't make the time or shelter to install, and ever-so helpful family and "friends" are full of advice about solutions I can't afford.

Hopefully the cooler weather will not turn wet right away.

I built a portable shop. It was a one car garage built on a steel frame. I was living in a mobil home court at the time. It had a steel frame, 2X5 tongue and groove floor on top of that and covered with steel sheet metal on the floor. Steel studs, insulated and particle board on the walls. I made the roof trusses from sheet metal I ripped and bent. You can have this done at a sheet metal shop and screw the pieces together. I was working at an HVAC company at the time. Then insulated the roof too. I salvaged a hotel heat pump, mounted that in the wall. Put an electrical panel in it and wired it all in conduit on the inside of the wall. Lots of lights too. But one of the neatest things in it was a gantry crane I made for it that attached to the trusses near the walls. The day I bought my XJ for a song and a dance, it had a center bolt broken and the axle had shifted. Drove it into the shop, picked the whole rig up with the crane and fixed it in about twenty minutes. :D

When we moved, I loaded the shop on my car trailer and moved it down the street to a new home

That sounds really cool. I'm going to get some prices on the carport solutions. I know everyone talks down on them, and everybody says they blow away all the time, but I own a couple of welders, I can pour concrete and install anchors, I know basic carpentry, and I can run an electrical circuit. I don't foresee a major influx of extra income, so I'm going to make some thing work.

My opinion of those $800 car ports is that with some extra bracing and metal sheeting on the side they could be made to take some wind

From the ones I have seen where someone thought it through, that does seem to be the trick that makes them viable. Solidly anchored to the ground, properly braced, insulated against the condensation, and thinking though how to avoid water seeping in around the base.

Found the idler pulley squeaking when cold.* Also has some.wobble to it.* Ordered a new one

Was getting a gas smell and found a very small leak at the fuel pressure regulator. pulled it out and the original 25 year old orings finally gave up the ghost.* Im guessing our recent spat of cold weather finally did them in. Found an oring in my parts pile to replace the outer o ring which stopped the leak but didnt have the inner oring so my fuel system wont hold pressure when the engine is off. Ordered a new Delphi branded unit*

Changed oil 300 miles early cause i had the time.* Rotella T4 10w30 and a mopar filter.*

Put a new spherical bearing and spring in the front drive shaft.

Put a new PL259 connector on my radio's coax

Installed caster adjustment shims on the lower control arms in an attempt to track down my front driveline vibes

New drain plug w O ring. Seals up like a dream. Fluid back in.

Had a leaky lower rad hose last weekend. Now the rad is leaking on pass side from top of rad? Ran it for a bit and seemed like it stopped leaking. Cleaned and filled rad reservoir last wknd. Got new lower hose delivered and will probably replace for good measure, but the wandering coolant leak continues. Popped the cap off, seemed like it had some pressure. Only ran for 2 to 3 minutes but seemed like it was hot in a couple places. New water pump about a year ago. Not sure what's up.

Worked on oil filter adapter with my special T55 on a nut tool. But to no avail. Anybody got an idea on removing filter adapter?

Yesterday, I took my XJ to my buddy's shop so he could help fix up a few things. He is an old body man so it was easier for him to take my doors apart, clean, lube and adjust all my door latches. They work like new now. I also replaced the rear wiper motor, arm and blade. I works to wash but not on wipe. I'll have to look into that later. At least it works, kind of. I had to replace the heater motor resistor again. That's twice in a year.

My old stock radiator leaked few points, around filler neck, around radiator input and output.
Decided to upgrade radiator, good aluminum ones are crazy expensive, affordable ones are mostly having negative reviews.
After some googling, ordered Spectra Premium CU1193 Complete Radiator with 16lbs Stant 10230 Radiator Cap.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j2KYZQKsZjI/XkNos4dMOAI/AAAAAAAAIRo/pdg9AF8e2z8Vom5SmVuKxu2qINypCISpQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/01.PNG

They arrived and installation is straight forward. After filling with coolant, it seems volume is lower than stock one, but after few days it almost emptied overflow bottle, needs adding some more coolant.

A/C radiator and hoses were removed, because it lost refrigerant within weeks after filling and now also finding R12 is very difficult nowadays.

Result:
1. got a some space in front of radiator and
2. no air blockage, means better cooling :D
3. installed temperature probe sensor (capillary tube?) of thermal fan switch installed through radiator, between radiator fins, near to upper hose, fan starts and go off nicely
4. thought about onboard air compressor conversion :D

Sometimes front windshield washer motor is not working and wiggling the wires helps. Checked all wires carefully, they are all normal. Suspecting module itself and decided to open and check. Drilled out 4 rivets and opened it.
Yeah, reason was there, solder of leftmost contact is cracked, the pin can move freely up and down.
