Yeah, I feel that my shop organization skills have somehow gone out the window... Even after I put the work into cleaning up... it only seems to last for a short time!!

Received my drivers side windows switch panel, window regulator, Fibertech body repair filler and mixing board I bought, so that I can complete repairs on a few small rust spots in my lower 1/4 panel.

Using the new drivers side window control and drivers side window regulator that I ordered, I continue trouble shooting my random window issue I've been having... Well don't need new control panel, so guess I'll have that as a spare... still don't know if I'll need the new drivers side window regulator, as I believe I've narrowed my issue down to a broken wire in the boot between the drivers door and the body.. Will have to try later and see if I can manage to somehow move the boot either towards the footwell, or more then likely into the drivers door (if that is even possible)... and see if I can find the broken wire... (most likely the common ground that runs through there for the panel, as it seems to be the common culprit other find broken in the boot)... trying to debate if might not just be easier to take this job on one day, start early, and remove the drivers door completely, unplugging the connectors in the drivers kick panel, and then repair any wires that way, where I won't be smashed in that small area between the door and the body trying to access, identify and repair the wires.. or if I might not try and talk to the shop I'm trying to contact now about doing my gears, and see how much they'd charge to take care of the issue with the windows... I'm pretty sure now that it is at least 1 wire that will need to be repaired... I'm thinking that if I do repair it myself, that I will add some extra wire in, that way I can try and keep the splice from being in the boot, as I'm sure that will cause it to come apart again, and if nothing else will put more strain on the other wires in the boot, causing them to separate and causing other issues...

Mine had multiple wires broken in that boot. If i recall correctly, i removed the door speaker and gained easier access to the wiring. I also had to resolder my window switches on the driver and passenger side for an intermittent issue, and that took care of it. You may want to give it a try. Its a cheap (free) fix if you have solder, and it wont hurt anything to try.

Well, I got this far on Sunday....

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG02181_zpsqibqgczd.jpg

... it still uses the gudgeon pin, to fasten the piston to the lever.

I also got the bottom of the shift lever done...

... I just cut a slice off some 200mm x 6mm flat I've purchased to make chassis stiffeners from... and drilled 7 x 10mm holes @ 15mm centres.

All I need to do now, to finish it off, is make the tie rod, I have the ends, and modify the lever on the transfer case. :bacondance:

Were you able to pull the wires through the boot into the door to repair the wires, or was your break there @ the door end of the boot?? I think my break(s) are @ the body side of the boot, at least that's the portion I was messing with (lightly squeezing) when the windows started working... Did you resolder the door switches that were brand new, or were they just used/worn out... like the contact points that usually wear out?? Now that I have found I can pinch the boot, and get it working correctly.. it seems that my only issue will be broken wire(s) *at least I hope so, anyways*

This was the issue with mine. It was inside the boot, and it looked like someone had been in there before. I just put new connectors on and crimped and heat shrunk them.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e124/Rocketryan1/Mobile%20Uploads/20150920_121522_zpsqmufwk6d.jpg (http://s38.photobucket.com/user/Rocketryan1/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150920_121522_zpsqmufwk6d.jpg.html)

As far as the switches, i had another issue when they had stopped working, so i disassembled my factory (252k mile) switches, and re-soldered everything. I read that after a while, the solder will crack and mess things up. After i did that and fixed the wire, all my power locks, and windows, and keyless entry have been working flawlessly.

Been looking at making both of these purchases for my XJ too.. Wishing I had bought the JCR nut plate for my rear bumper install... as all I had was some universal junk.. worked just fine, but would have rather have had the proper stuff... Now I'm just too lazy to remove the rear tire carrier bumper to install them.. But might do so, if I ever get the bumper I purchase a year ago... As far as the console goes... Mine currently is good, and I have a spare plastic assembly... but have been thinking about picking up the metal one from Dirtbound, and just avoid the issue at all.. Look forward to seeing a review on the install and what you think about it..

So over the past week or so...

Got rid of the HCV valve and installed some hoses for a 98. No more worrying about that crap setup failing.

9723

9724

After that, I replaced the distributor with the newer style thinking it may be more efficient than the Renix-style. Found out the electrode tab at the end of the rotor had broken off... couldn't believe it was still running!

9725

9726

I put in the newer style dizzy and rotor and it was backfiring and pinging like crazy. Filled 'er up with a tank of 93 to see if that would make a difference.... no dice. Got a new stator thinking maybe the one I got was bad. Same deal. Put my old dizzy back in with a new stator on IT... STILL running like crap.... this time it was trying to stall out on me when coasting down hill!

What is the deal?!!?

So I decided to check the pressure at the rail. it was barely reading anything. Pulled the FPR and discovered the orings were all chewed up. WEEELLLLLLLL.... no WONDER it's running like crap. Replaced the o-rings and BOOM! Runnin' like a champ! :bacondance:

Yesterday I tore into the power window issue, even more so one, that left me with a dead drivers side window while @ work during light rain... Come to find out it was a common issue... was a split ground wire inside the boot between the body and door... Found two more that were cracked and working on splitting, and then the ground wire that was split through... spliced them all back together and everything works like a champ again.. Drove it tonight to the gym for the first drive in almost two weeks..

I don't think so, unlikely anyways, I mean anything is possible, but I haven't touched the head yet in all this.

UPDATE: Compression test is next, I REALLY wanna make sure the rings are good still (fingers crossed). There is no oil in the water or vice versa, but the oil IS thin and DOES smell horribly of fuel. So there's a possible injector, or vacuum issue I may have to track down as well. I dunno.

I picked up an old SC DOT riding mower that had been sitting in this guys shed for a while, got it up and running... ripped the mow deck off of it, as it was all rusted out anyways... started playing with it and having fun running it like an offloading go cart... Nope. Heater control valve just bypasses the heater core. The blend door is what controls the temperature. Jeeps after 1997 didn't even come with an HCV. If you remove the HCV and install the later year hoses and notice warm air when your AC is on, just adjust the blend door to make sure it's closing all the way. Been workin' just fine in this 100+ heat index - blowin' just as cold as it ever did.

It's alot of fun, good way to get young one's into racing. He won this race last year but there's a dude showing up from out of town with a badass mower that's got all racing go cart stuff under it. Here's Clay at the last race we were at...IN THE ZONE>>>

Clay had a rough day and the out of state mower got him, but not by alot, he took second and had to race his ass off to get that (at one point he was in 5th)...LOL Great day of racing....and Dads a hero because the mower stayed together with no problems all day...:bacondance:

Enjoying driving it to and form work... can't wait even more so to be able to do it once the gears are done.. so I can enjoy it even more.... Got an odd sound from up front, but only seem to hear it when it's in gear... so going to look and see if maybe my mechanical fan is at all hitting the radiator.. If so, I'll go ahead and install my new IronMan4x4Fab motor mounts, which I was putting off until I did the new header & 99+ IM swap...

Took the WJ out to check out a couple of gravel forest roads that normally open in September, decided to chase down a brief mention of an old trail from one of the Overlanding forums.

Have to get the wife to unload the pics from her camera, but we found out the "last half" of the Auger Hole trail that I last ran in a '79 CJ-5 over 20 years ago was still there. Drove the WJ gingerly, with the idea I would turn around as soon as anything looked beyond it's stock setup with M+S tires...made it all the way to the old steel bridge that was literally two I-beams over the river 20 years ago. Can't believe they left the trail there, since they closed half of it to horses, hikers and mountain bikes.

As much as I love my XJ, was floored by what the stock WJ did today, several rutted red clay hill climbs, muddy granite gravel, etc, never had to change a line single time, not certain, but I don't think I ever spun more than half a tire revolution before the WJ found a bite and moved forward. It was nice confirming the transfer case works, and not fretting over the wife's Explorer.

So.....Time for skids, small lift, recovery points, tires... just a few accessories :D

Went to pick n pull yesterday to take advantage of half off weekend. No 703 injectors and all the jeeps were completely gutted. Oh well. I also charged my battery to see if I can find a potential parasitic draw. Reading 12.75 v Freon the battery but when I switch to 10amps and put the meter in series with the negative terminal I get 0. Going to have to try a different meter.

Took the little tj elk hunting on grizzly island. Guy i was scouting for got a 634 lb on the hoof with a 7 by 6 rack. He has fisical limitations, I scouted, skinned, cleaned, quartered, packed and loaded for him. This was a lottery hunt, so the island is closed to the public. Just us a jeep and a couple of wildlife officers on quads. It was a great weekend.

The wife and i are also on the hunt for a few more Jeep events to go to before winter hits. Im pretty happy with how the Jeep is doing. The AC is working great, and everything else seems to be in good working order, other than i need to find some new 33x12.5s.....

Replaced a lock cylinder, removed and reinstalled a door latch (will be replacing it soon), and fixed a power window switch issue.

The driver's door lock would not turn so I removed the lock cylinder to verify whether it was the lock cylinder or the latch. It was the lock cylinder so I removed the one from my totaled 97 XJ. So I have to carry an extra door key, no biggie that is the way my 93 was. Got everything back together, locked and shut the door and it was able to unlock it..... locked and shut the door again and it unlocked itself, the lock button inside would also not move all the way one direction. I took apart the door again and removed the latch, played with it a bit could kind of see where it was binding up and unlocking. Got it working correctly again, reinstalled everything, tested it and it worked great....once. An back to unlocking itself and the lock button not moving all the way so I will be pulling the latch from the 97 and swapping those out. Would have done it this weekend but I ran out of day light.
While I had the door apart I decided to fix my issue where all the windows will only work from the driver's door switch. I had already researched this to be an issue with two solder joints in the master switch. I pulled the switch and opened it up and sure enough the two solder joints had failed. Warmed up the soldering iron and fixed it up. All door windows operate on their own now. Pretty productive weekend.

It was just a Mcguires car wash soap. It seemed to work pretty well. I may do it again and scrub it down. I'm still working on getting all the iron ore off of it.

Might have to look into this for washing the XJ, Ram and GF's LJ... Not sure if my little ole Harbor Freight pressure washer will do as nice as yours did.. but anything can't hurt... and if it makes it even more fun to wash them... then even better... I prefer leaving the XJ with it's mud.. but occasionally got to clean her up.. Just washed the crap out of it today... 1 to get the mud cleaned up underneath for when I am able to finally get the gears done, don't want to dump mud all over the guy or his garage.. and 2 cause I'm hoping this week to be able to do some minor filling work on some dents, holes and 1 small rust spot.

The funny thing is that i work for a company (Graco) that manufactures all the pumps that they use for painting and spraying undercoating and all that, basically anything that has to do with moving any type of fluid or coating. Maybe i should try to market these things lol.

...said Pa Kettle :D

Well... update on this. The distributor was not exactly the issue. I mean, replacing the rotor with one that was BROKEN helped, but the real issue was the blow out o-ring on the fuel pressure regulator. Replaced the small oring and carefully inserted the FPR and BLAMO!!! Rail pressure back up to 39 PSI, newer style distributor is in and everything is running smoothly. Only thing left is to do is a valve seat job, and to either replace the exhaust manifold or weld the crack in the one that's there. All sensors and ignition parts are brand new now.

In other news, got some tools...

9762

9763

Aaaaand did some not so great things :(

9764

That essentially ended with this:

9765

And an update on this.....

All 860 lbs of what was left fit nicely in my 4x8 trailer.

9794

In other news, I picked up a set of ZJ seats for it. I'm waiting on a set of late-model XJ sliders to be able to fab them into place on my 92 floors.

I also got a set of TyreBeads balancing beads. Haven't put them in yet, hoping to do that tomorrow before the Back The Blue Florida convoy this weekend. Got a lot of road to cover.

9795

Also ordered a set of 4 LED cubes for the roof of my Jeep. I'm making a light bar... oldschool style, just using LED cubes instead of halogens or one long bar. Based on the light output I've seen of the cubes, these will still put out more than the Halogens and will still be more than enough light... and not blinding like what is typical of the long 1-piece bars. Should be here tomorrow.

And finally, my radio crapped out. Well, it's been a long time coming. I had a Kenwood KDC somethingerother in it. Nothing wrong with it, worked fine. BUT, it only had 1 set of preamps in the rear and I also wanted bluetooth. Well, okay, it also lacked several other features that I had become accustomed to with Sony units. So, a friend of mine was getting a new CD player and asked if I'd install it for her. Said I could have the old deck if I wanted it, but the faceplate needed work because it would stop working intermittently. So I took her up on the deal and of course, had to re-work my wiring harness for the Sony pigtail. Put the cd player in and no matter what I did to the faceplate (even taking it all the way apart, cleaning it really well, re-flowing the solder, etc) I kep slowly losing functionality. Whatever, I'll run it till it dies and I'll get a new unit. Well, it finally happened. I pulled the fuse for the dome lights because I was working on something and didn't want to kill the battery. When I put the fuse back in, the only thing the radio would do is turn on, change sources, and eject the cd. The preset volume wasn't loud enough to hear ANYTHING over the sound of the engine being on and I couldn't turn it up anymore.

TL;DR - I bought the Sony head unit I've been itching for because mine finally took a dump....

I also look forward to seeing what you think about the balancing beads... Was wanting to get a set when I got my 33's mounted up... but my impatience won, and I went with the normal wheel weights... but with playing and such, I don't want to have to worry about the damage to the tires or my Jeep if/when one or more of the weights are knocked off..... Did it come with new valve cores and everything as a little kit??

Before starting on my non-Jeep wrenching, washed the dust off the WJ from the search for dirt on Friday, and treated some minor surface rust sports with this:
http://www.corroseal.com/
Impressed with it...have used the Permatex converter for years, but thought I would give this a try. Impressed so far, it's a little more $$, but it's thin enough you can spray it. Did a big test patch on a front-end loader bucket, we'll see how it lasts.

Looked under the WJ, found the exhaust heat shield loose, will fix tomorrow.

Took it down to a Jeep event put on by local club(s)... had a pretty decent little obstacle course setup in one of the large arena's @ the fairgrounds... Feel like something is wrong or loose now, but maybe it's just that everything got worked in right.. so going to go out and retorque everything and look it all over, just to make sure it's all still good.. I was pretty happy with how it all worked out though, need to do some more trimming on my front fenders (haven't trimmed anything as of yet)... and can't wait to get the gears in... didn't have any issues running any of the course, but would have been even better with better gears and even more so with some lockers...

I decided to do a tune up today... Needless to say, the plugs I took out were at almost .090!! Wowza, so I replaced them with some champion coppers, gapped at .035, started it up and all went well, and it ran smooth as butter......

I then went to clean the IAC valve, and I ended up breaking it :( Now it won't idle, and won't start unless I give it gas. Even then once it starts, it dies. Ugh, I guess s I'll be picking up a new iac tomorrow.

Have you tried taking it apart and re-soldering the connections? I did that with mine, and then everything started working like a champ, even my keyless entry!

This is the drivers side, for reference. I did the passenger side also, and that is what fixed all the issues I was having.

let me know what you think of the balancing beads .......

Well guys...... the verdict is still out. I really don't quite know what's up with these stupid things. I don't know if it's my tires, or the brand themselves, but these make my Jeep ride WORSE than before sometimes, and then better than it EVER has other times. I can't quite pinpoint what the issue is either. Because temperature doesn't have a bearing on it, terrain doesn't, speed and acceleration doesn't. I just don't get it. I'm having them removed and returning them to the manufacturer though.

I have 2 theories...

#1 the small white (I think they're ceramic) TyreBeads balance beads are not made for off-road tires. Not sure how that would make any difference, but think, these things are small enough to fit down the valve stem... probably about 1/3rd the diameter of the valve stem so... maybe they just don't have enough "mass" to really do any good.

#2 Six months ago when my tire place balanced these, the tire tech said they were out of round. I'm not really sure what that means because all tires are technically out of round, that's why you balance them.

In either case, I can't give an honest review of the product. Sad to say, but I WON'T be doing so either. Friday, I'm going to the tire shop to have the beads removed, the white letters flipped outward (been wanting that done for a while anyway), and the tires balanced conventionally. I've already created a return label for the product through Amazon, and the next time I go with a balance bead, I'm going to take the advice of a fellow member on CF that has had EXCELLENT results with airsoft bb's.

So there ya have it. Perhaps with brand new tires, or just regular car tires, these would work better. But I'm not going to spend anymore time on them myself.

Here's a link to the product if you guys want more info on it...

Your tires being out of round is a problem.
Your tires should be round, adding weight doesn't negate the "roundness" it negates the imperfections of the mold that was used to form your tire. Better tires have better forms which creates consistency. Which in turns makes a tire easier to balance.

When you get them balanced with conventional tire weights, see if the issues are still there or not.

Agreed, the peculiar thing about it is, it's sporadic. Sometimes they'll ride like it's on a cloud, other times, it's like I have square wheels. Part of me thinks perhaps the TyreBeads are too tiny and thus susceptible to clumping - even though they say they won't clump. I'm going to attempt to remove them today and replace them with solid-core airsoft bb's which was a method originally recommended to me. Although, I think the answer is going to boil down to cheap tires. *sigh* I miss my BFG KMs

Im picking these up on Monday. 33x12.5x15 Duratracs. They have a DOT of 4213, so they are 13 years newer than my current tires. They have 12.7mm (about 14/32nds from my math), and they guy wants $500 for all 5. Im just debating if i need the 5th since i already have a full size spare. Might be nice to have a matching one though.

I just need something that will get me through the MN winters, and deal with the ice on the road, since i lack ABS, but i also want something that will get me through the trails. The Duratracs seem like a nice compromise.

Saturday was spent working on the non-Jeep stuff...brakes on the Ranger and a 7.5" rear axle 1 quart low on gear oil, vent hose needs replacing.

Today I worked on the "hidden" sheet metal damage on the WJ, before installing the header panel I picked up at the local u-pull.

Put the Wife's 2003 Explorer to work being an anchor point for the come-along as I worked on the driver side sheet metal.
http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b605/dredwolf1/2003%20WJ/20160925_120758_zpsux4ozx1g.jpg

A bit of pressure, and a little hammering....more pressure....

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b605/dredwolf1/2003%20WJ/20160925_120735_zpslwcltmwr.jpg

A LOT more hammering and adjustable wrench work.. :bang: Had to get out the ez-up as it climbed into the 90's today, I'll have a shop one day.

As I worked, most of the spot welds popped....but I am flat out of rivet washers...that will be another weekend. Cat in pic was helping hold down the ez-up and chock the tire.

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b605/dredwolf1/2003%20WJ/20160925_171120_zpsfqwb6ipx.jpg

Lower radiator support took a major hit, which I knew...but I did not notice the radiator was only supported on one side :shocker: .....more work with the come-along....making the Explorer creak and groan..hope the wife does not notice :D

http://i1294.photobucket.com/albums/b605/dredwolf1/2003%20WJ/20160925_171112_zpsl9lvvrvt.jpg

And the radiator is at least in the holes for the supports. I'll look for some ideas to make a custom lower support, maybe something out of tube.

But I got everything back together, and added 3 more fasteners to the driver side fender that were unusable before. The sheet metal was too close to that driver side tire before, lots of room now. But I am NOT putting a washer bottle back there.

I want to get/fab a hidden winch mount for this rig since its my DD, so that will help with any lost of strength, least I hope it will.

4. Mounted my CB on the dash (have to make wire connections for power)

Last weekend drove it 1500 miles roundtrip up to Missouri and back for a wedding. The two of us slept in the back of the XJ one of those nights for the first time and it was pretty darn comfortable.

She's running pretty good right now, averaged 18-21mpg going 70mph+ most of the way. It's a good thing too, we have a 1800 mile trip to Colorado coming up in a few weeks.

I'm not going to say that's impossible, but due to these being ceramic, I'm going to say it's highly unlikely... unless there is, in fact, a kiln inside my tires. Though in the Florida summer heat on this hot pavement, it's probably not far off :D

In other news,

My alternator took a crap :turd:. So I upgraded to the 136 amp alternator and upgraded my wiring, provided by a fellow member over on CF. Also ditched the K&N intake in favor of the factory airbox - doing a cowl snorkel soon.

New nuts and washers for the rear shocks. 1 new lugnut to replace the stripped one. I'm going to replace all the nuts when I get my tires. Tomorrow I'm going to get a new valve stem and seer if that's what caused my flat. I know the valve stem was bad and leaked all ready, that may have been the culprit. I also tightened the car seat down properly. Can't have the jeeper bouncing all around.

Got new valve stems for the canyon. Looked up some youtube videos on bead breaking and came across a video with this crazy contraption.

A floor jack, couple 2x4s, and a ratchet strap got that bead off in about 30 seconds.

Replaced the stem with the handy valve stem tool and filled her up. The bead seated as easily as it came loose.

Tried to put the wheel back on only to realize several lugs were stripped and cross threaded. Back to the store I went for new 1 piece lugs.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160930/df99e0b6a677cc0ecdb138008b5ffdea.jpg

Shiney! All is good except for that top one is cross thread and stuck on there. Not sure hope to get it off. The good thing about the crummy stock lugs is they stripped instead of the wheel studs. Provided it was just the valve stem and no other leaks here's another project done. Well it will be once I get that last stud off and replaced.

Wish I would have caught that process a couple years back... I had a hell of a time attempting to pull a tire off ~ and then just took them to the local shop for $10 ea.

~ Just yesterday, I caught a Harbor Freight add that had a Tire Changer in it for like $45
= http://www.harborfreight.com/manual-tire-changer-62317.html
Would have been a break even on those 4 tires, but the next time it would have been free....
But I don't change tires often enough to want to buy something else to find a place to store it.

Wish I would have caught that process a couple years back... I had a hell of a time attempting to pull a tire off ~ and then just took them to the local shop for $10 ea.

~ Just yesterday, I caught a Harbor Freight add that had a Tire Changer in it for like $45

Drove it to the gym... got right around the corner from my house and she decided to stall out and die on me... so I put her in neutral and started right up... but shuttered a bit... so I fought with her all the way to the gym... and then once I was there I plugged in my OBDII scanner and had three faults.. 1 for O2 sensor (nothing new there), 1 for a transmission sensor (MMMKAY>>>) and 1 for TPS sensor (which is what I figured was the issue to begin with).... so drove it over to the shop (storage unit) and pulled 1 off my spare engine, and drove her home no issues... so she seems to be good to go for now... just need to order new down pipe, and new O2 sensors... since the upstream sensor being seized into the downpipe is the reason why I keep getting the O2 sensor fault and am not surprised when I see the CEL pop up... really wanting to replace/upgrade the header when I do the downpipe... and with that do my 99+ IM swap... and heck, might as well run a new exhaust too... darn vicious cycle... lol

Backed in to it with the wife's kia. Went to do an oil change for the wife. There's no where to put the jack that won't destroy that whole thing. There's a skid plate the covers the entire underside that you need to remove. I took 1 look and said f this and told her to take it to jiffy lube or whatever then backed in to the jeep trying to get it out of the garage. I've never hated a car I've owned but I absolutely hate that car. I don't even care about the dent and scrap in it, it deserves it. My poor jeep on the other hand. It only scraped the paint on the bumper end.

He just wants a more capable off road rig, no risk of breaking, and no nonsense. But with only running 37s, he didnt want the 60. I believe hes asking like $2k for the stock axles.

He always does things big lol. He had an H1 for a while, and he had (2) WRX STi's (because the dealer had 2, and he looked at it as a good investment), and most recently he had a '13 JKU, but he recently got rid of that for the new one.

Just seems like a lot of money to spend for the 4:1 T-case and not much else different from the base model(at least from what he's keeping). But I guess he's not hard up for cash either, so more power to him I guess.

I'd love to get my hands on a matching set of Rubicon axles for my XJ, but I think a junkyard 8.8 is more in line with my finances lol.

That is darn close to my situation. Got the O2 sensor, but it won't budge so I want to replace the downpipe. And why not go 2.5", which no one seems to make. Then you know the header is old and cruddy, need one of those... My cats' front flange is rusted through... I'll take one of those... I have a '01 intake, bored throttle body, and 703 injectors but if I've got to replace the manifold gasket, the header has to come off anyway... and if I'm removing all that I might as well replace the head gasket, and of course I had that lifter tick a couple years ago so new lifters and pushrods... and those roller rockers would be nice... new cam of course... then it's not much more to rebuild the block... and now stroking it is completely feasible... but wait, turbo............................................. ......................................

I got my Xj all washed and waxed, and we went to the Jeep show for Eppilepsy. They had some nice rigs there, along with the guys from Iron Rock and Dirt bound. Momma and little man and I had a great time!

I found a deal on a bumper that I couldn't pass up.... The guys from dirt bound said I could have this DIY bumper that was already tacked together for a whopping $200! We decided it was too good to pass up, so tomorrow and during the week, I'll be finishing up the welds, and bending a stinger for it.

I also taped on my flares to see how they will sit once relocated. It was dark so i couldnt really see what i was doing lol. This confirms that i definitely think it looks better with the flares.

I'm working on my son's XJ. Today I replaced the door jam switch(NAPA Echlin DJ6330) It was $13.70 out the door. I was impressed. the switch was made in the USA. I also installed a rear dome light. His 99 does not have one. I found one with wiring harness in the JY for $5.00. For those who might be in the dark, the dome light harness attaches to the main harness behind the rear passenger side trim panel directly across from where the spare tire mounts. I found that out because the trim panel on the donor vehicle was missing and I unplugged the harness in order to remove it from the vehicle.

Thanks for that information.. Will be keeping my eye out in the only 1 local PNP we have, for a 98+ rear dome light the one where you can tap the "lens" and it turns on... so I can convert from the 96- version my 97 was stuck with from the factory...

To mount the light I got, I screwed the light to a piece of scrap wood using #6 screws and 2 3/8 nuts for spacers. If you just screw the light to the board you can't "tap" the lens. Then I used Gorilla construction adhesive in a tube to glue the board to the ceiling.

I haven't shared this before but some of you may have the same problem and it might make you feel a little better knowing it's a shared thing.

For about 12 years now I've had a hard time getting things done outside of work. I get extremely sleepy usually after eating. I'll take a nap that is four hours long. By that time most of the day (or evening after work) is gone.

I would like to go places but I'm concerned that once I get their I'll be so tired that I won't be able to stay awake or enjoy what I'm doing. My other concern is about driving back.

What really sucks is I have all these Jeep parts to put on my Jeep and I'm usually too sleepy to go work on the Jeep.

I was really happy this Saturday that I had about 8 hours of sleep (2am to 6am) then up then back to bed (8am to 11:30am). I didn't feel tired, so about 3pm I headed out to the garage to try and find the exhaust leak and to check the fluid level in the transfer case.

Even though I didn't resolve the exhaust leaked I checked many things and tighten all the intake/exhaust bolts.

Hell I even got the C8.25 RuffStuff diff cover primered and painted! I was going to go Sunday to Ace hardware to get the longer bolts but after 6 hours in the garage I decide to chill.

I air hammered the fill plug out. Added maybe 1/2 a quart.

I also removed the front drive shaft so now I can work on the u-joints as I have time without needing to crawl under the Jeep.

All in all a good day of accomplishments.

I am beat everyday after work. I have found as I get older it gets harder to find energy and time to finish all the projects that are flying around in my head. Plus balancing family responsibilities. That's why I faced the facts when it came time to putting a new engine in my xj. I can eithier work on the swap for months or I can have it done by a professional that I trust and get my xj back on the trail and using it. Which brings me back to the post "what did you do on your jeep today" my freshly rebuilt aw4 came in today and it was installed behind my new atk motor.

Replaced the ignition lock cylinder($135 at the dealer). They keyed it to match the key I had. Two suggestions to those who may have this problem in the future(my key would go in but would not turn) Try taking the cylinder out and cleaning it good and get new keys made and use them instead of worn keys. The new keys worked well but the wife did not want to be late to appointments or get stranded so we bought the new cylinder. The dealer did not charge extra for the keying.

There is a 3.5mm jack for audio in, on the back of the unit. If you get a 3.5 mm jack cord and a double female you could put it somewhere on the outside to plug in another cord for any media device.

I just continue to enjoy driving her every day... Still waiting to get her into the shop to have the gears installed... and while waiting... more and more parts are collecting up to cost me more to have installed while everything is pulled apart for the gears. Going to try and get all new wheel bearings, new ball joints & u-joints.. so the front axle will be all new and hopefully good to go once the gears are done, then I can really enjoy her with peace of mind... well at least as far as the suspension and axles go anyways...

Spent the weekend working on the project XJ. Yanked the rear axle out, built a budget boost using a leaf from an 82 Chevy halfton truck, and installed an axle from a 99 XJ. Snapped a ujoint bolt on the pinion yoke so looks like I am drilling that out and going with ubolts for the ujoints.

Got 3" of lift from the single Chevy truck leaf, will need shackle relocation boxes which will give me another 1" of lift.

The tires in the picture are 245/75/16 so they are 30.5" tall. I have another leaf I can put in If I need more lift though concerned it might be too stiff. Will lift the front and see where it sits.

Didn't break any shock bolts though.

Yes sir. The only reason I parked the Black 2 door was because the front end was getting worn out and I had the blue 4 door (purchased for $500, got totaled in front end collision). Going to pull the engine from the blue 4 door to put into the black 2 door, have an extra rear axle, seats, center console, etc to swap to the black 2 door or to my "new" red 4 door. I had always intended to build the black 2 door after I parked it just hadn't had a lot of time to put towards it.

Did an oil change and tried to figure out why my steering is so ****ed. I checked the wheel bearing by moving the tires up and down. No noise, no movement at all. When I move them side to side there's a click sound and a little movement when I push on the side of the tire nearest the center of the jeep. That would indicate ball joints. The don't look terrible.

I don't want to keep throwing money at this and be wrong but it's at the point of not really safe to drive. It pulls bet hard to the right. Sometimes at speed out well start veering left. Any bump creates significant bump steer.

Matt, why don't you have somebody watch what moves while you try to move the tire. Also have that person saw the steering wheel back and forth while you look. That can do a lot of diagnosing and take the guess work out in just about a minute and a half

Forgot to mention, did that. The stabalizer was moving slightly on the axle side. I tightened that up. took a test drive, still a clicking when I turn and still hard pulling to the right. I didn't see any movement in the ball joints put anything else.

In preparation of getting the Jeep back on the road so I can carry a ladder for work, Matt generously donated his birthday and helped me replace the badly leaking heater core, evap core and swap e-brake handles and replace brake shoes and drum hardware. Got to drive it from his shop to his house (AWESOME driving that thing again after two years) and we'll bleed the brakes, flush coolant, vacuum and charge a/c. Then it'll be off for inspection and registration!

Last weekend I picked up a 8.8 with discs and 4.10 gears from the jy. Thanks Jake for helping me move this heavy axle. http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z348/4jeep/48E664E3-2B4A-48F7-8B82-AE96A40E92DE.jpg (http://s1185.photobucket.com/user/4jeep/media/48E664E3-2B4A-48F7-8B82-AE96A40E92DE.jpg.html)

Yup. Haven't had time to finish it yet. Hoping if I wait long enough, the wife will let me keep it :rolleye0012:

swapped out a tire and added pressure to the rest. all are cracked and dry rotted, will be replacing soon it looks like. although I've beat on that set pretty hard with low pressure. but they're just done. cracking in between tread blocks and chunking pretty bad.

looked at my steering gear and how much its moving, scratched my head on how to brace it better. Got an idea but need a bigger welder.

Yeah the cut n fold on the rear is on the list. Next weekend I am going hunting for my bastard pack rear leaf donor and ordering my 5x4.5-5x5 adapters for the JK wheels and tires I picked up for $250 for all 5

I brought the Xj out to go check the ice thickness on the lake. It already had enough ice to support my big ass, so ice fishing will be happening soon!!

And we got a good 6" on Saturday and Sunday, the Xj crawled through it in 2WD with no issues. Im really happy with the duratracs so far.

pics of my tires. These are treadwright retreads. I could run a little more pressure and try to get a few more rides out of them.

how quick would you guys jump to replace these? they're almost 5 years old and have seen some rocks. the cracking between tread blocks is what's making me nervous. gashed a sidewall last time out and with front locker going in soon, I'm going to be pushing them a little harder. no road miles, trail only.

If they're only being used on the trail, I'd just keep using them until they don't hold air at all anymore or become too much of a pain in the ass. But then again, I'm a cheap-ass so you might not want to do what I would do. :smiley-scared003:
