I installed a dead pedal in my JK last weekend. (Sorry no pics, imagine a clutch pedal and you are 90% there) I did not think much of it driving around this week but I really came to appreciate it when I hopped in my wife's JK to run to the store.

The past few days I finished up the floor panels, well for now. I got them welded in and painted the underside. But because I'm gonna be cutting into it to do the rocker braces I found no reasonto coat it yet. Why waste such expensive paint... And we all know what time of year it is and around this time the xj gets in the spirit.

So the Wednesday and Friday were used to solely turn it into the polar express. I've got a parade Saturday so i'm cutting it close this year. Still some more to do as well. Added a few new pieces too. Whole jeep shots will be taken tomorrow. :D

Going to do the Cleghorn run on Saturday, December 26. Meeting at the Cleghorn exit off of the 15 Hwy. Leaving from there at 10AM. Trail ends on HWY 138 at Silverwood Lake. After that I am going to take the trail over by the dam and head up to Lake Arrowhead, and then maybe head over to Fawnskin and Big Bear.

Went to the junk yard wednesday looking for a front driveshaft an 95% of the cherokees were 2wd and the other 5% already had the driveshafts removed. :bang:
Went to the yard closest to me today and was able to find one in about 10 minutes and was also able to find the rare center console clip that was intact. New to me driveshaft is in and the clip works wonders. This was better than most of the stuff I got for Christmas. Hopefully if everything works out tonight I'll get to test it all on the trail.

Fun story. A few houses down from me lives a single older lady, probably older seventies. Another family in the neighborhood invited her to spend christmas day with them so she isn't all alone. Christmas morning we woke up to probably 8ish inches of fresh snow (i love me a white Christmas) and there was no way she was going anywhere in her minivan. So my dad volunteered me to take her in the Jeep! We shoveled her walks and brought a step stool so she could get in and motored on down to the family's house. She was absolutely tickled we would help her and was impressed with how the jeep did in the snow. Definitely a fun Christmas memory. :D

On my way to work the bearing in my Idler pulley went bad, causing my serpentine belt to get to hot and snap. Didn't actually hear a snap, but I smelled burning rubber and smoke started to come through the dash... Immediately pulled into a parking lot to assess the damage. Thankfully my Mom works only a couple blocks away from where I parked, she came and got me and I dropped her back off at work and used her car to get replacement pulley and belt. Pulley went on like a piece of cake, the belt though was troublesome. The PO did a dual electric fan swap, so the stock belt size is way too big because there is no fan pulley. Ended up with the right belt the third try... Definitely a new experience, changing the serp belt in a random restaurant parking lot! :) I'm super grateful how it all turned out with my mom working her close job today and my work being chill so I can take a day off without much fuss.

I've been looking at those recently, look really nice. You planning on doing all that work at once or doing one, waiting, then doing another? Really just wondering if you plan on cutting off the portion that goes to where the stock LCA brackets are.

For now, I'm just putting the frame reinforcement plates on. I will cut off the part that goes by the control arm. I will deal with that later once I get my long arm kit. I'm doing this in steps. You take your auger and drill holes as you walk out :-)

Later in the season, in about a week or two, you will be able to drive vehicles out on the ice without too much worry.

This is what pretty much any lake in MN will look like in about a week, on any given night (and yes, that Tahoe is on a road that they plowed to drive across the lake) lol.

If it is a true three link, that is as good as it gets. You can take large bumps at any speed and the steering is much better through the bump, and you don't fel it quite as much. It just feels much smoother

man, I just don't see 2500 in parts there. guess its got everything you'd need. full leaf packs, trackbar and dropped bracket too.

If you're upgrading from say a S/A kit, (already have leaves, trackbar, front coils) it probably makes a lot more sense.

also, why is it typical to go from 4 control arms to 3 links? I can't wrap my head around any cons with a 3, seems to locate the axle just fine and provides the most flex, just curious 4 is not the norm

denverd1
01-11-2016, 10:42 AM
watched about 5 minutes of the lucas oil Pro 4 off road series. those trucks were hauling ass and landing hard. front suspension looked like it cycled about 6 inches from max droop to full stuff. I know those trucks are running some bad ass shocks with more money in valving than I've got in my whole rig, but seems like they would want more compression on those hard hits. And "flex" is something they don't really need, they're not hanging a front tire and full stuffing the other side so maybe they don't need much more out of the suspension. I was just surprised to see the front tires with so little travel. any thoughts?

I tow way too much to not have a more capable mule. one thought I had was to buy a classic truck and restore it (found a 1950 F1 for good price), then I don't have to worry about the towing issue ever again. And I don't have to daily my tow rig (10 mpg). No idea what we'll end up with

Yeah, the grands never were really great tow rigs. An f1 does sound awesome. I've always wanted, and still do, an old bull nose medium duty to flatbed. No trailer to hassle with. :D

also, why is it typical to go from 4 control arms to 3 links? I can't wrap my head around any cons with a 3, seems to locate the axle just fine and provides the most flex, just curious 4 is not the norm

It isn't typical, but better. When our four link suspension was designed it was with eight inches of travel or less in mind. On both sides, you have two parallelograms that really are not quite parallel. The top link is shorter. With this much travel, if one side is pushed up and not the other, you can get a difference it what the top and bottom link has to be in order to not cause binding. The rubber bushings as designed are capable of absorbing that difference. However, with twice that much travel, ain't no way. So what happens is that articulation is limited, or something has to break. The same thing happens with a Y link, only worse. You can get away with it with a lift of 4.5" with some limitation of articulation, castor change etc. But to get the full potential, you have to free one side up or a bolt on a top link would pull through the eye for the bushing.

which side do you leave on as the upper? why couldn't I take off an upper arm and get more flex?

I used the driver side. Either side can be used, however I have a disconnect axle and didn't want to involve that joint. You can take one arm off, but I found the stock type bushings will not handle it. I went with a poly bushing on the axle instead. So far I haven't had trouble with that

wife tried to get it inspected... with no headlights/side markers! Fortunately, she called me on the way to the shop and we got her headed back to the house. somehow she checked a curb (or something) and I had a flat pass rear tire when I got home. Funny, I can drive all over Barnwell Mtn with 9 lbs in my tires with no problem. She can't drive a mile and half on pavement without flattening one. hey, I didn't marry her for her Jeep driving skills. But c'mon man!!

Did half a can of Fix a Flat, a little air and a drive around the block and the Jeep's ready to hit trail. Still holding air this morning

This reminds me, it's past time I get my Jeep inspected and get my TX plates. You guys have to do emissions inspections out in Tyler? Have to where I live, I know I'm good on safety hopefully emissions is up to snuff too. Sorta miss Florida, no vehicle inspections of any kind.

Swapped out the beyond rusted and worn out rear brakes.. Got a complete rear brake kit, w/ new drums, wheel cylinders, shoes, and hardware kit for pretty good deal shipped through RockAuto.. She stops much better now... But in the process of doing the brake bleed, I noticed that my upper passenger side shock bolt, that goes through the Bar Pin Eliminator, was missing the nut... so who knows how long I've been driving around without it.. But will have to work on fixing that over the next couple of days.. As well as put a few more things on order for it..

A few things here and there. Finally got the decorations off and put in storage.

Found a spot below the front of the engine. Didn't take long to find the source... lower radiator hose. And wouldn't ya know it, as I was looking at fixing that one I saw the front axle was wet. Tracked it down to the heater control valve. Its less than a year old so I didn't want to replace it but a tightening of the screws seems to have done the trick. A new lower hose fixed the other.

Ordered some edge trim for the 3rd brake light cover. Doesn't fit as well as i'd like but maybe it'll loosen up.

Drove it Saturday and its got a new hiccup. Low rpms, moving and stationary, its trying to stall. Even dropping down to 3-400 rpms once. But every time it would catch itself and shoot up to 11-1200 and back to normal. Happened 3 or 4 times. Will see what comes of this.

Got the sandblaster going, then the tip broke off. So, after finding a new one i finally got to try it out more than a few seconds. Its small so it takes a bit for a sizable area but will really come in handy for those corners and crevices.

Well this past weekend was full of Jeep parts replacing!
Saturday, i helped a buddy install new hub assemblies in his xj. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160210/08d0e57e67c102645de8a75aa1396740.jpg
He gave me his old one's, timken units too!
After that Saturday afternoon i headed to another friends about a hour drive in Bentonville, he picked up some new Rubicon Express shocks for the front of my xj for $35.00 and i installed them at his shop. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160210/9f11a3ba6a2b88f41e0b306fb2f138df.jpg
Then Sunday morning..
I installed the timken hub assemblies in my xj,along with some zj rotors i had saved from the scrap bin at work and machined them. (I save any and all Jeep related parts) [emoji23]
Then after that i replaced my valve cover gasket finally..
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160210/9d9fc51e430f7b09c2e623ade81feb68.jpg http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160210/f8c6d32394df0abd77b7b9e82a28ba5d.jpg
Monday night after work.
I finally installed my sye and stock front shaft in the rear,
Took about 2.5 hours.

Then tonight,
I fixed a known two door issue, cracking in the door jam ..
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160210/0d81d61bac31e91aa16474073b3f5bd6.jpg welded the cracks up, used some exhaust hangers as gussets and welded them over the welded cracks in hopes it doesn't crack again. Painted it with some bedliner.
My new rear shocks from 4wheel parts should be in tomorrow. Rubicon Express as well.
Then Thursday my new two inch shackles should be here. I'll get those installed after i get home.

Now all i need is to regear. Then my Jeep is done till next year.
Then it may get a longarm upgrade kit! We'll see then..

Starting to think that I can make a decent cowell intake by sourcing parts myself.
Although I LOVE the THOR set-up...at nearly a 1/3 of the price and an opportunity to fab something myself, I think this is the way I'm going to go.
The only other aspect of this unaccounted for is the metal shroud that THOR has that spaces/houses the filter/intake pipe coupler (the part that screws to the firewall) .... I may not need that, but I'm sure I can bend up something that will work if it becomes a necessity.

I will likely do a C.A.D. (Cardboard Aided Design) mock-up of this to get an idea of wether or not this will work (fitment wise) then go from there.

Cleaned it up, brightened up the terminals and contacts, and threw it back in until I can get another cap and rotor. Working better now, but it's definitely a bandaid.

Also have a FPR on the way - fuel pressure is at about 28 constant. And probably going to replace the fuel pump. Have to poor man's prime it to get it to start and when you shut it off, the pressure in the rail drops to 0 within about 2 seconds of shutting it off... lovely check valve is in the fuel pump soooo yay.

TIME FOR AN AIRTEX!!!!! Just kidding.

pulled the leaf pack from the old truck, took them apart and pulled the bottom two leaves (not counting the overload). My old 82 Chevy truck had the 56" long springs vs the 52" long that were an option (my 87 had the 52") The 56" packs are too long for an XJ the 52" packs would have worked better. Of the 56" pack the bottom two leaves are about all that I can use due to length soooo I hope they work.

I also separated the donor axle from it's leaf packs.

Still need to drain and refill the diffs and on the front have to wait for taxes to get the axle seals, hubs, ball joints, etc... but it feels like a step in the right direction since I hadn't been able to work on it in almost a year.

prerunner1982

I forgot to mention, the 56" long springs from a 1/2 ton Chevy are the right length for a MJ. The springs are 2.5" wide which match the XJ leaves.

I also plan on using U bolts from the Chevy... they are twice as thick as the XJ u bolts. Will have to use the larger U bolt plates as well.

And by donor axles they are a Dana 30/Chry 8.25 out of a 99 XJ with 3.55 gears.
Now you may say great but what about changing the gear ratio? These are replacing the stock axles in my 93 XJ 5 speed... which are 3.07 ratio.
I should be able to run a 33" tire and still maintain near stock performance. Sure I could go 4.10 and get better offroad performance since this isn't currently my DD, but I am doing this on a tight budget. The only new part currently on the list to buy is an IRO double sheer trackbar and it will cost me more than both of the axles did together.

Idles much better now, and actually starts slightly easier. Still dealing with having to poor man's prime and hesitation at around the mid-rpm range.

Ordered an Accell brass-terminal rotor cap and button from Autozone... 17.99 - couldn't believe it. Should be ready for me to pick up today after work.

Getting a fuel pump after that.

ordered a replacement set of amber side marker bulbs. I ordered a set of 4, they came in but can't find them for shit. They're relatively cheap, so after tearing the garage apart several times and this project being completely stalled until I either find them or buy more, I bit the proverbial $6 bullet and bought more. Also found a 10 pack to be cheaper than 2-2 packs. (amazon's crazy like that). I will have a 4 pack of amber bulbs up for grabs if anyone else is wants to go full euro ricer mode with me. :smiley-taunt002:

Had a friend come over and help me check out why I still have a wobble in the front. Found that my new track bar setup is all ready having issues. The bolt on the frame side in the bracket moves. So I'll need to weld the washer and see if that stops that issue. Then he noticed that my TREs need attention, some are bad and one may be going out.

So I need to find a good aftermarket solution for steering.

Seeing as I don't drive the jeep as much during the winter as I do in the summer the past few weekends I've been showing it some love. Every time I started it the battery was almost completely dead. So I would jump it off when it first starts it runs like crap. Would not idle would die which it has never done before. Once I would keep it running keeping my foot on the gas for several minutes it would idle on it's own. So yesterday I decided to pull the battery and get it checked (and it's a pita on a TJ). Sure enough it had a dead cell got a new battery, installed it started right up and idled fine just like it use to. So I guess with low voltage going to the computer is why it would not idle right until it built up voltage. 2 problems solved at one time. Got to love that.

The other day ... Swapped in a new hub on the passenger side. Third hub in two years now. Driver side in perfectly fine in same time frame.
Dropped in a Chromo shaft with 760x while I was at it and took the old hub in for a warranty swap. Probably put that one on the driver side and keep the current one as a spare.
Also installed the TJ front sway bar and JK disco's. Makes her much tighter around town now. Before that she rolled like a wet noodle. Fine for me, not so much for the wife.

Now I just need to source replacement ball studs for the disconnects so I can add a spot to tuck the sway bar out of the way. I think they are BDS.

Of course now my exhaust is falling apart again, yay.

Well... to be honest, this is a little bit of a loaded question. I needed to replace all of my steering and quickly because the steering was so loose I could literally hear the joints clacking around as I was driving down the road.

I wanted all MOOG parts because, well, it's MOOG! BUT, even with getting the parts from RockAuto.com, I couldn't afford the $211 price tag. So unfortunately, I had to cheap out... but I was able to get my steering for $65 shipped. I DO NOT recommend cheaping out. If you're going to upgrade, UPGRADE! If you're in a tight spot, get what ya can and save for better parts (that's what I'm doing, by the way).

With that said, MOOG part #s:

Tie Rod - DS1312 $48.79
Adjusting sleeve - ES2079S $13.22
Tie rod end - ES3096L $23.79
^^^This is what is known as the V8 ZJ Tie rod upgrade... if you want to replace your drag link as well for all new steering, get an additional Tie rod end and the drag link DS1310 ($71.79)... unless the adjusting sleeve on your current drag link is rusted or there's some other problem with it, you should be able to reuse it... these don't really wear out.

When you're searching for these parts, it's a little confusing unless you know what the autoparts stores head them as. The parts stores and websites call all of the above parts (with the exception of the adjusting sleeves) "Tie Rod Ends"... because TECHNICALLY, that's what they are. The rod and end are all one piece so it's really just an extended TRE in their mind.

Now... if you need to replace your steering and there really is just no way for you to afford the good stuff.... Ultrapower is the brand I used... all the same part numbers.

OH! And by the way... Rock Auto sends out regular discount codes and encourages you to share them with as many people as you'd like!.... So with that said - everybody enjoy 5% off!

Getting the donor tranny out was a big pain because the passenger side E12 was torqued on too tight and the head was rounded. After I tried for almost an entire day and then an experienced friend came over and tried for a couple of hours, we gave up the ghost and I went and grabbed his engine hoist and hoisted the motor and tranny out of the Jeep. Once it was out, I ground the head off the e12 and presto! Motor and tranny separation.

After that, everything else went pretty smoothly. I'll tell ya this much, things go a lot quicker with proper floor jacks, air tools, and a friend to help you. I was doing everything myself with the screw-type bottle jacks that come with the Jeeps and hand tools.

Only "snag" I ran into after that was the speedo not working... but it didn't take me long to figure out I just needed to swap out the sender units. The 96+ trans case uses a 3 wire unit and my 92 tranny uses a 2 wire. But they both fit in the same hole without any issue... good stuff.

I run a MagnaFlow. It's not loud really, maybe a bit more than stock but nothing like my brothers Flowmaster 44. Although mine sounds like a diesel and his a v8...

Right there with ya, brosef. Got the thrush turbo under mine right now. Sounds great. I have a FM muffler that I snagged off this parts jeep that I might throw under it after my floors are all done... but I'm really kinda diggin' the Thrush Turbo. Nice growly idle and a real mellow tone on accel with no drone at cruising speed

tried to figure out what I'm going to do with this tire situation. Can't get a replacement as they were discontinued by treadwright. Can't buy 1 off the shelf as it won't be the same size.. Don't want/need a full set. Firemanray and I put about 8 plugs in this one and got it back on the trailer. its holding air, but I don't trust it

guess I could run a slightly different sized tire in the front. until I put the front locker in, of course. not sure what to do. Goodyear MTRs are a different tread pattern. Gonna look at Maxxis buckshots

Take a look at different tires true tire size. (Not the advertised but the true size) plus or minus 1/2 inch won't be bad. Now if you're talking over an inch, then it will be noticeable.

While not exactly the same, the tread looks similar to a Maxxis Buckshot, a Dunlop Mudrover, or if you're looking for a cheap alternative -

When I did that, I used natural rubber agricultural tubes. Natural rubber flexes better. I commonly ran my sand tires at 2.5 and 5 psi for several days. These were bias ply ag tires also. One took a big enough hit to deform an 8" section of the rim, which I took home and beat back out and reused. As far as I know, you have to use radial tubes in radial tires. Not sure why

Is there a heavy equipment shop around? They might be able to vulcanize a patch on the inside of your tire.

Maybe so they flex similarly?? Grasping for straws here. One definite concern I have is running low pressure and the tube shifting around inside the tire.

Nope... wheel liners take care of that. Snake bite is when the tube gets pinched between the bead portion of the tire and the ply portion of the tire when hitting a rock, root, stump, etc... it's not anything sharp that punctures the tube per se, it's more pressure that does it. They call it "snake bite" because it pokes a hole on two sides of the tube

Imagine there being a tube in the tire in this pic...

That's tough. Get two new tires and run them on the same axle, which gives you a spare. I'm assuming you can get a tire diameter that is close enough not to cause an issue when you're in 4x4.

edit: other ETXJC rides: Moab, Beach trip (topless day, I'd assume), Arbuckle OK as well as High Water Mark in Arkansas. Got some some great leadership this year and I plan to start killing it offroad

Also moved the tow hooks back a hole to keep 'em from getting snagged on stuff. Probably won't make a humongous difference, but they really didn't need to be out that far anyway. They were kinda putting a little too much leverage on the bracket anway with how far out they were.

lol... yeah Abe, that's my friend Travis Mattson. He cut the roof off a long time ago, and then removed the doors. His son was driving one day when they were out wheeling and he snagged the passenger quarter on a tree or something and just totally mangled that corner. So Travis just cut it flush with the floor and fender.

He liked the roof being gone, but said it was just too hot in Florida to wheel with the sun beating down on you, so he cut the roof off that parts Jeep I have and bolted it to the roll cage and remaining front roof section on his. So he actually has an XJ with a removable hard top

I told him to take that quarter panel and sail panel, but he said he just wanted the roof. I think I'm gonna cut it out and stick it in his shop... he'll put it on there eventually.

changed the oil in my wife's 01. I used one of the 24 NAPA gold 1515 filters I purchased recently in the annual customer appreciation sale. this year they were $3.60 each. last year they were $3.46 each. Regular price $6.52 each.

you spent 83 dollars saving $2.92. :bang:

Nah, he spent $3.60 each this year and $3.46 each last year for oil filters that normally cost $6.52. So he spent $86.40 this year and $83.04 last year to save a total of $143.52 in oil filters over only two years time!

I wish I was as good with my money as he is.

Also moved the tow hooks back a notch so they're not sticking out and getting snagged on things. I'd like to change the hooks out for the d-ring mounts I've seen... seems like those have better clearance than the hooks.

Then, yesterday I got it stuck... forgot to upload pics to share. I'd seen that hole for years and figured since I was 4wd now, I'd try it out.... shoulda known it had no bottom to it - stupid thing is always wet even in a drought.

Oh yeah.... and I toasted my HF grinder cutting up the parts Jeep lol. People can say what they want about them, I paid 10 bucks for it and it lasted me a year. I found a Black and Decker with a little more powerful motor and a couple of other features along with a 2 year warranty for 30... but I would have bought another one from HF in a heartbeat. After a year of use and abuse, that thing doesn't owe me a dime.

I was informed by my "rescuers" that if I had been over the to driver's side about 6 inches, it would have taken a very large truck to get me out. I should have known... that spot is always wet... even in the middle of a drought.

In other news... I was attempting to cut some more sheet metal off the parts Jeep and burned up my HF grinder lol... can't get mad about it being as I spent 10 bucks on it a year ago. I did end up purchasing a little bit better one though. B&D 6 amp w/ a 2 year warranty for 30 bucks. The HF one had a 90 day warranty and only had a 4.3 amp motor.

Felt a small clunking while drive straight forward very very slow

Checked play at drive shaft u-joints, there was no movement. But when rotating, both front and rear propeller shafts rotate around a half inch. Is it bad t-case chain or ring pinion issue? mine is 27 spline C 8.25, driver side rear tire have 1/4" movement inward/outward, passenger side almost no movement. what you guys suggest to check?

Meh... I guess maybe. It's a little too aggressive for AT status. Definitely more of an MT, but it's a good all-around tire.

http://images.stylintrucks.com/product_images/350x350/multi-mile_tires/WildCountryMTX_23740.jpg

FYI for anyone that's a brand snob, it's basically a Cooper Mud Claw.

http://www.gatewaytirecenter.org/285_70_17_Cooper_Mud_Claw2.jpg

From NTW's website:

"The Mud Claw is a premium mud traction tire with a deep, aggressive, high void tread design that works great in both loose dirt and deep mud but still behaves well on the highway. Built by Cooper Tire, these tires are marketed as a private brand tire under the Mud Claw name.

-Self Cleaning Interlocking Tread Lugs For Outstanding Traction In Mud And Soft Soil
-Alternating Lug Dimensions For Increased Lateral Stability And Bi-Directional Traction
-Staggered Shoulder Blocks For Enhanced Off-Road Grip Pinned For Studs For Improved Winter Traction"

I don't have them anymore, I'm running the Mudstars. I like these, but I'd like a set of the Mud Claws
