I ran 6.5" front and rear on my 98... They sounded real nice.. Plan on doing the same, along with running all new speaker wires in my 97.. Still got to figure out what head unit I want to run though... Just the few times I've gotten to drive it so far, the one speaker (when it actually works) drives me crazy... and the radio randomly doing whatever it is, that it wants to do...

I continued sending out emails, trying to see if I can't get an appointment setup with one of the few shops that can handle doing an alignment on an OTK steering setup, and LA's... as well as installing my SYE.. Want to make sure it is done right, and hopefully quickly so I can actually enjoy the Jeep this year during the few times I'm @ home...

Started considering what color I'd want to line my XJ in.. Been thinking about dropping it off @ the local school and have their auto body class take care of the surface rust and then repaint it, probably color change at the same time.. But have lately been thinking about Monstalining the exterior of my XJ... to go along with the already planned monstalining of the interior.. I know I'm going to do the interior in black... I requested 5 color samples of the colors I like the best that they have... Figure if I can find a color I like, maybe I'll go ahead and monstaline the exterior as well as the interior.. Not sure if the school would be able to do bedliner instead of paint... I mean if so, then I might have them do the exterior... guess I'll see how the interior process goes for me.. lol

I'm with you on that.. I pulled the liner out of my XJ a few months back when it was still too cold to really mess with it.. Thinking if I get some down time here in the next couple weeks I'll move it over to my storage unit/garage... and start cleaning the factory fabric and backing off of it, and order up some new material for it...

Mine didn't want to come out nice so I ripped it out..... I replaced it with the blue insulation, half inch, you find at Lowes and HD. Works very well and doesn't look half bad... Thinking of putting in 1/4 inch and some wood paneling so I can paint it, just not wanting to deal with the headliner crap anymore.

Nice! Wonder how they hold up to the long legend of the bfg at.

Curious about that as well. The lugs are obviously a bit further apart so they should be awesome in the slick stuff. If they still have decent life it may be THE go to tire for me. BFG ATs never let me down but I didn't really put them to the test. I put a set of street tires through WAY MORE on my 2WD Sequoia. Only got stuck once.

Still on the fence about the KO2s. I don't see near enough trail miles to compromise the life of BFGs AT in effort to find better offroad performance. This rig will see a lot of DD miles and a few hunting trips on well drained dirt roads. Hmmmmmm...... decisions. KO2 just looks so good to me!! I may go fingerjam the lugs around to see how stiff they are compared to AT lug and tread pattern and make my decision from there. I wouldn't mind a little more road noise either! Although the wife has taken a liking to the WK so she'll put majority of miles on it. She probably won't agree with me on the road noise, but what she doesn't know can't hurt her! :smiley-taunt002:

I do think they'll be an improvement over the old design. Especially the side tread. Just gotta keep the longevity they were famous for.

Just tell the wife, that's the sound of awesome. And the louder it is, the more awesome she gets to drive. :D

Just got my trans temp gauge in for the Grand. Accurate system info [emoji106] me likey.
As for the Grand, I spent 2 hours trying to suspend the framework and cycle rear suspension to get rear coils out so i could install air bags to level me out when towing. What a huge cluster ****. Things came to a head when I tried using a pry bar to work the still-loaded spring free. My bar slipped and my right ring finger came down with much force to meet the rear brake disc. Incessant bleeding and cussing ensued. Probably need a stitch but leaking stopped. I wrapped it and reassembled things. Shitty day in the garage, but I'll be back. Or Mlmaybe I should buy a for sale sign and stick it in the window. .. undecided

I've looked at that HF Storehouse a few times... Wasn't sure how much of it would be useful for the automotive side!! Maybe I'll pick one up and pull the spools that aren't useful for that side and replace them with useful stuff... and if it might be useful for other uses later, I'll put em to the side!!

This is in quotes, 'cause I copied it from my build thread on CF. HOWEVER, after posting this, I came to the realization that I was doing it wrong. A couple of guys on CF gave me some friendly advice and after hearing what they had to say, I decided to put that project on hold and wait for some leaf spring liners. One of the guys on there uses leaf spring liners and coated his springs with Slip Plate, but I think mine will be fine with just the liners.

SO, I'm gonna sand down the paint I already put on them - probably wet-sand - and them put a light coat of paint on the others and wet-sand them and then get the liners, put the packs back together and THEN paint them all with the finish coat of hammertone.

I hate waiting though once I start a project so this is going to be a little difficult for me.

Cheapo from eBay. Figured i would give it shot.

The bar on my bumper is ebay, and I have a few others. All seem fine.

Sounds good. I definitely want to do it eventually and most likely will do it myself. So I have learning to do. Good time to go disc in the rear. :D I need/want to do some brake too. Finish up the ebrakes and swap in a dual diaphragm booster/master cylinder I picked off a 95-96.

I got the Double Shear TB from IRO, and it is definitely pretty beefy... Have seen a few other folks that have similar setup.. but so far definitely love the look and beefiness of this one.. I have seen and installed one just like the one you have there.. and it definitely looks good.. and seems to perform pretty well even compared to similar setups from other brands..

Ok, over the weekend, I put a new AC pump in my xj. And last week, I put a new clock spring in after destroying it while replacing the dash after install of new evaporator and heater core. This next weekend, pump up the A/C to see if it works! got my fingers crossed.

Mounted my tow bar brackets. Dont really like how it turned out. Only place available on my winch bumper was on the bottom. They are kinda close together and hang under the bumper. Gonna be buying the tow bar d-ring adapters pretty soon instead. Also some stray cats have infiltrated my shop and were living in my xj. Damn thing was full of fleas. So I ripped out the carpet. Needed to go anyways.

Day 5 of 5 day vacation = day 5 of working on the jeep.
Driver side ball joints are in, upper control arm is out, wish I could say the same for the axle bushing. The ball joint press I rented didn't have anything close enough to work (missing parts) and the tool I cobbled together that worked great for the pass side just didn't cut it.

Ordered from Chapman Dodge/Jeep here in Scottsdale, it came from LA. It was right around $300. You can find some Mopar dealers selling them on Amazon.

Having tried the CSF 3 row and other radiators, I decided to give this one a shot.

ouch! Tetanus time!

Nah... wasn't rusty. Although last time I stepped on a nail, it was a 12 penny... in a rotten deck board.... at the dump... went through the bottom of my nasty old sweaty shoe and sock.... touched my heal bone... yeah - got a staph infection and ruined my whole summer. 7 day stint in the hospital, followed by 3 months of IV antibiotics through a PIC line. So I was a little paranoid when I stepped on this one. Been well over a week though and everything is good.

I got tired of the stock horns so I replaced both of them with the horns from my old fleetwood. Oddly enough Cadillac had a sound more befitting an XJ than Jeep.

Cadillac 4 note horn is great! Closest thing to a train horn without actually getting air horns.

It was interesting. I haven't come across anything like it. Iv'e seen flogged out bushes etc, but a broken casing...

When it happened it felt like the front wheel fell off! There was only the faintest thud. The car just wanted to steer itself!! Accellerating wasn't too bad, but all hell broke loose once I let off the throttle!!

It's our daily too. And never leaves the black-top. Has never been flogged. I inherited it from my grandfather, whom had from new. It's an '82 model, btw.

Well I have to wait til Thursday before I can jack the engine up to get my oil pan out. while it is up I figured I would check the front brakes. Have not checked them out since I bought it a year ago. First had to beat the wheels off with a sledge hammer!! Then, what I saw was quite scary. I took the caliper off and started beating the rotor up. Will continue to pound on that bas**** tonight. Its coming off. It does not have any say in the matter!!

So i finally got that friggin oil pan out. Had to jack the engine up to do it. So i am replacing the piston rings and honing the cylinders. Need advice on the rod and main bearings. I am right there, is there any reason why i should not change them at this point? I have 200000 miles.....

You might as well, but keep track of where and how they go. They only go one place and way. Also put some vacuum tubing over the rod bolts. If the threads hit the polished surface of the crank they will scar it

Maybe i belong in a different thread here but just looking for advice. So a few know that i overheated cracked and warped head and am oveehauling many things. I am honing cylinders and reringing pistons. My buddy who is an old deisel mechanic told me i should do rod bearings and main bearings since the oil pan is out and they are right there. He said he never did a ring job without replacing those bearings and doing that would be like replacing a head gasket without getting cylinder head machined before putting it back on. I am scared to death of creating a problem that did not exist by swapping these out. Would you guys recommend swapping them out? My jeep did not have any real knocking sounds before overheating and i did not run it but a ten minute idle a couple days after the overheating before starting this process. uust need morw thoughts on this.

denverd1
06-04-2015, 01:16 PM
you really should. crank bearing (main) caps will all the right there and connecting rods as well. you're taking the rod bearings off anyway, might as well replace them.

internal engine "bearings" are more like straps that go between the rod or main and the block or crank. they're basically oil galleys and are unlike any other bearing you've ever seen. they have to be aligned and oriented a specific way, but are very easy to do.

OGCollard
06-04-2015, 03:29 PM
If they are not damaged and i swap them out, think i can forego the crankshaft machining? It is not really an option.....

I would check them for wear and if they look good, put them back. If the bottom end didn't have a problem before you'll probably get another 100k out of what you have. Replacing the bearings without sizing cleaning up the crank and then plastigauging it could cause problems down the road, literally.

On my recent rebuild we didn't even remove the crank. Replaced rod bearings, rings and honed the cylinders after checking them for a ridge. Head went to the machine shop.

New oil melling oil pump, lifters.

Just to make sure i am understanding correctly Musderoy. If main crank bearings look fine leave them be but do go ahead and replace the rod bearings since they are coming half off? That sounds more practical to me actually.

Considering how little I do - to the little red shopping trolley,

... you blokes must be getting real slack with your XJs,

... if I can manage two posts in a row .. :p .. :D

Anyways ...

Today consisted of about 5hrs of roadtripping and dodging Kangaroos.

As well as that - there was about 5hrs of hardcore wheeling in various shopping centre carparks,

Ohhhhh ... and some pretty harsh applications of the stop and go pedals,

... until I remembered, that the steel posts with coloured lights ... were not ... leftover xmas decorations .. :o .. :D

... also bought it a 10mm hex socket ... so I can tickle its tummy with something better than a, almost fits, torx socket, when doing the t'fer case oil .. :D

phewwww .... was almost as exhilarating as going to a texas offroad park .. :rolleye0012:

That's what we did on mine. I believe Matt said if the bottom end wasn't a problem at 175k miles don't touch it. My next question was how long should I expect to get out of this engine doing this, he estimated another 200k miles.

I'm sure there are different thoughts about this, but this is what we did with mine.

Funny guy at time it oil change noticed it was 4x4 and starts selling me tcase, front and rear diff service. $300 bucks for all 3, but he'll make me a deal at 250. Politely asked him to do oil and trans, thanks.

Would normally do trans fluid but was pressed for time. Still have to pull pan and do filter. Will put a few miles and see.

Instead, they changed the trans fluid and engine oil to whatever they chose to put in it. Nothing wrong with starting her off right with the SYE and driveline.. Never needed it with my old 98, she did well with only TC drop.. But went ahead and started this one planning on doing the SYE this time around.. Got the SYE, just need to order up the new rear shaft.. I'll probably just throw in a stock front shaft for a bit, just to get me by till I get the new aftermarket shaft in, if the front length won't work for my lift..

Yeah she's slowly getting there.. Got the front bumper & sliders that I need to get stripped down and recoated.. and as soon as the rear bumper finally comes in, it'll need coating as well.. then install them.. Got SYE in the back of the XJ to install, some lights a few of which are on order right now, get the toe adjusted and some more interior work and I'll be happy with her.. at least until the rough start to life she had gets the better of her and the engine gives up the ghost.. but hopefully that'll be a ways down the road... at least far enough for me to save up for either a small stroker to install or a full diesel conversion!! Figure might as well build her up not just replace w/ stock if I can help it...

I have not gotten to drive it yet, due to the toe still not being adjusted correctly, and unfortunately the gearbox is pretty much shot.. Going to order up a new gearbox when I'll be on my way back stateside from my 3 month out of country time.. I'm just trying to figure out if I want to go with the Durango upgrade or a stock box.. So since I got put on this last minute deployment, I won't have a chance to take care of the gearbox before heading out, but will get it ordered so hopefully it'll be ready for pickup when I get home in 3 months, then I'll install it, and get the XJ over to a shop in MD to have them do the adjustment and alignment for the OTK and the caster on the LA! Can't wait to see how it performs.. I can only imagine it'll be far better then stock that is for sure... I also go to figure out something as far as a dampener, as I don't currently have one for it..

I also found something interesting... I picked up (2) 3/4" D-rings from Tractor Supply for my bumpers.. and I ordered (4) 3/4" D-rings from Smittybuilt so that I'll have matching D-rings for the front and the back bumpers.. While I was moving stuff around yesterday in my garage I happened to notice embossments on the D-rings.. the one from:

TSC says WLL 6 1/2T
Smittybuilt says WLL 4 3/4T

I'm just posting to give a heads up to anyone wanting to purchase D-rings for their rigs, you can pick up rings for pretty much the same price @ TSC and not have to wait for shipping time and they are rated at a far higher tonnage over the Smittybuilt... thought it was kind of interesting..

I'll be running 33's from TreadWright.. They're retreads and they're only 11.5" instead of 12.5".. but for the price.. I'll run em for a bit until I can afford some much more expensive tires.. Then again if I'm happy with how they perform and how they look.. I'll run em again!! So far I already like they way they look and can't wait to get them on the XJ and hit up some off the paved road time!!

Yeah, i like those. Especially the ones like you have that resemble the old mtr. But they don't make a 33 with a 15" wheel, and i don't want to change wheels. Its a shame really, they're even local to me so i could go to the factory and save on shipping and i believe one of our local jeep club is sponsored by them so we get a discount.

Yeah that is the reason I picked up the 16" rims for my 98 was so I'd be able to order up a set of the 33's, before they went to the new MTR style tread pattern.. But now that I got the 97, and even more so that they went to that new MTR pattern.. I was more then happy to run them on the 16's I still had in the garage from the 98... But yeah, I know I sent them a few messages, as well as a few other folks locally to me... and have seen many folks that said they sent messages to them about them not carrying the 33's in 15" rim format.. Said they couldn't source enough useable carcasses to make it worth them doing, but the last time I talked to them about it, when I ordered the set for my 16's I have now.. they said they are starting to seriously look into it..

Yeah I have seen the Teraflex hi-steer kit... and was stuck between getting it and the IRO OTK kit... I chose the IRO OTK kit only cause I was able to snag it for a great deal from a local Jeeper.. and so far I am not at all sad about that choice.. it is a pretty beefy design that is for sure..

Well not today, but yesterday... I finally got a chance to do an oil change on her, and swap out the plugs all of which I've had the parts for sitting in my garage since the weekend after buying the XJ.. So far seems to run smoother, and definitely doesn't have the hesitation it had before I changed out the plugs... Going to go out in just a few minutes and try a "cold start" as that is usually when I noticed the biggest issue with slow to start..

That looks good.. How much did it set you back having it done?? And is that just a stock front shaft or one that was ordered w/ measurements after the SYE was installed?? I'd say wipe up the fluid, and see if anymore appears.. but if everything else seem clean and dry, was probably just residual that was missed in cleanup!!

Complete custom measurement. With the transfer case rebuild it was 1700 bucks. New chain, bearings, seals, and the sye with driveline. Imho, expensive, but the peace of mind is worth it.

I'll be checking on the fluid every couple of days. So far the trans is plumb full, just like when I dropped it off.

Toledo...if the jeep aint lifted you are going to have to undo the motor mounts and jack the engine up to get that oil pan out. We tried several methods for several days and that was the only thing that worked.jack engine up, rotate back of pan to the passenger side and it will drop right out.

It wasn't too bad to take out , the exhaust was in the way but got around it . I jacked the front up till tires were off the ground and with my 3 inch lift had good room . I'm really surprised the bottom of motor seems very clean ,no sludge or junk except a little on bottom of pan . Hopefully tomorrow will go good had to break it up into 2 days because it's too hard to lay under the Jeep too long for me and been fighting some bronchitis on top of that .

I changed a gas tank strap. Yes was very fun, why no way to empty fuel tank before dropping? Found more rust and looks like where the J-bolt on the drivers side lives has a crack in it. I could be an a-hole and make this 99 as pretty as possible and sell it, but I'm really thinking it becomes a partscar.

You talking to me?? If so, I do plan on doing something with the fenders.. Going to get the front end aligned and the bumpers/sliders on and see how the 33's fit on there.. But do plan on replacing the flares with something that'll allow me to cut out the fenders some for some room to get as much travel as I can out of the setup.. Can't wait to see what that is!! But yeah, figure the back has some nice clearance since it is sitting a bit higher then the front.. and will be adding some small coil spacers once I get the bumpers and such on, and get the settling to figure out what I need to level it all out... then I can figure out what kind of clearancing I need to do..

working on my 97 XJ. upper and lower ball joints and right wheel hub and u-joint. Fun times. the u-joint should have taken 15 minutes, ended up being a 2 hour job. Two end caps broke off while trying to press it out. Was a factory original spicer part. 18 years old and 217,000 miles on it, same for the hub. I had just done the driver side about 2 months ago. Thought for sure I was going to crack an ear, but I didn't. All done and back together. I replaced it with a Super Strength greaseable u-joint. Ball Joints are all Moog parts with grease fittings.

Yeah, looks brutal. My driverside ujoint had frozen up not long ago, but it came out ok. One other thing, on my 97 XJ, the lower ball joint nut should have been a 32 mm. It was not. I checked my new parts, and even looked at a 96 lower balljoint. I guess someone on the factory line thought it would be fun to put a 29mm nut on there. So I now have 29, 30 and 32mm sockets in my tool box.

Lower ball joints went in fine. The uppers gave me trouble due to the slight angle. OTC makes a balljoint kit for the Jeeps, but a friend of mine had already made his own tools, so I borrowed his.
