So not long after my last post I looked at the weather forecast and remembered we lived in Florida and there is never a time in summer where there is a 8 hour block of time with less than 80% humidity. So we said, "screw it" ran to the store for more beer and started rolling. Here's a few pics.

Don't worry, I had someone inspecting my work and pointing out all the spots I missed sanding.

Now to put everything back together...

That looks awesome Abe! Love the color choice for the tj.

Started building some trail doors. They arent gonna be real pretty but they will help me see better. All i gotta do now is replace all the screws in them with rivets, and bedline the doors.

Thanks Jake! Wish I could take credit for the color choice, but the lady picked it out for her birthday. I prob would have picked something plain, like black. Nobody tell her I said it but I think she was right.:smiley-scared003:

I'm just gonna combine last weeks work to one giant post... :P

I installed the axle shafts back into the housing to install the studs. Pressing the ZJ lug studs into the XJs axles began with much difficultly. I had to put everything i had into turning them into place, and still wouldn't be completely in place. I was using four of the biggest washers i had in surplus with a spare lug nut to tighten down thus pulling the studs into place. After a couple times i had a rediculously hard time trying to get the last washer off the stud each time and realized the stud becomes thicker there and most of my difficulty was apparently from pressing a washer onto the stud. So i found one that had a hole that had already been messed up for the problem. Much easier!

Loaded the new calipers with EBC Greenstuff pads and fitted them to the brackets along with the new rotors.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%20ZJ%20brake%20swap/P12006812.jpg (http://s1108.photobucket.com/user/xj-wheeler/media/Stormy%20ZJ%20brake%20swap/P12006812.jpg.html)

Next i got to install the Riddler diff cover. :D Enjoyed that one, waited too long to do so. Fit well, although the bolt holes may have just barely secured it before they bottomed out. I do want to find a different fill plug as the ones supplied are bare and rust really quickly. Learned that with the front one.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%20ZJ%20brake%20swap/P12007102.jpg (http://s1108.photobucket.com/user/xj-wheeler/media/Stormy%20ZJ%20brake%20swap/P12007102.jpg.html)

And i installed the brake hoses and secured them. I was able to re-use the factory hose bolts for that. But, once i installed and tightened the brake lines into the hoses it became apparent i would be battling leaks. I had tried tightening, loosening and tightening, trying to get the flared tubing to form to the joint. One day I checked it and they were fine at first glance, but i pushed the pedal a few times and i got a small spot on a shop towel pressed against the flare nut where the tubing goes inside. I loosened and tightened as much as i felt comfortable with and still, after the pedal was motioned, showed a small spot of fluid. I was rather disappointed with this, especially since the flares looked decent to my eyes and since i just replaced the lines a few months ago. But quite to my surprise and pleasing me they stopped leaking a couple days after installation. Why, i do not know nor could venture a guess. I will continue to keep an eye on this though, just in case it decides to anonymously leak again.

To finish it off i put the rear back on earth, filled the diff with Mobil 1, and bled the brakes.

The final product of all the hard work put forth by my brother and myself.

I am always cautious (admittedly perhaps a bit too much) when i do brake work. This was more of a job than i had ever done with any braking system so i would surely not be letting down that habit this time. I took it slow around the yard making sure it would still stop at all. ;) Then a bit faster and finally gave it all it had from maybe 10 mph looking for any locking up. No locking, but the front was fighting the battle for traction. Now, i am suppose to be taking it easy on the new parts to break them in but i had to test this to feel comfortable getting out with all these insane people i seem to live by. It passed all the tests i threw at it so i took it around the neighborhood with fine results. No dragging, grinding, pulling, or vibrating. We had to pick up a few supplies cause we're building a deck and instead of using the flatbed to haul such a monstrous load i chose to take the jeep. And after five months my XJ finally hit the road! No problems in any part of the trip so i am calling this one a success!

The "monstrous load" :D

Wednesday was a great day, my new rough country suspension kit came in, got a new steering stabilizer and a couple tie rod ends to sweeten the deal. Was planning on putting it in my lil brothers shop to have the kit put on, while in the air they were gonna service my differentials, do my front breaks, and get er all cleaned up for me. So on my way too work yesterday.....Boom! My Yokohama blew up, looked like a brisket, so I had to order a budget brand to replace it as quickly as possible. My buddy put it on the jeep for me $150 out the door. Means I can still have the rest done this weekend. Next week is new rubber, I'm thinking Grabber Generals, red letter. That'll give me two decent Yokohama for spares and one budget for spare. My 33s not an easy size to find in my town apparentlyhttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/07/19/y8azygym.jpg

Nothing too major but I sea foamed through the throttle body and replaced spark plugs. Jeep fired right up after that, no starting issues. The real test will come Wednesday. I will let it sit for a few days then go out and give it a cold start and see how she does. Oh and I added a nice Mossy Oak sticker to the back

Funny you should come to this decision.. When we did the engine swap on a co-workers 90 XJ (now my 90XJ).. I fought for 30 minutes trying to get the O2 sensor out of the manifold, so I could put a new one in before it got put onto the "new" engine... Well after I finally gave up, die mainly to no budging, and rounding off the flats on the sensor.. I pulled the IM & EM to swap over to the "new" engine, and come to find out that me ordering a new EM was a good plan, since the PO had wrapped an aluminum can over a pretty substantial hole in one of the primaries, and then band clamped it on... It was so much quiter sounding when we put the new manifold on, I was thinking the exhaust leak sound was probable just a worn out manifold gasket... But yeah, I made sure I coated the threads of the new O2 sensor in anitseize when I installed it.. hopefully that will never be an issue again.. lol

Lol, what would we do without previous owners genius ideas! With the amount of stuck this sensor is i fear breaking it off in the pipe. And that would be an urgent, not very fun matter versus just waiting to easily install it with a new pipe. :D

yea one needed 6oz one side the other 6.35.
the other was 5oz(these 2 were put on the back)
the other 2 were like 3oz's

the guy at the autocraft store helped me(i did them myself) learned how to do valve stems and mount and balance etc. pretty easy.
i think its the wheels. they are non-DOT stock car wheels :smiley-scared003:
but tires sure are out of wack though. paid $300 for them. since they are like brand new still(tread wise) il replace one at a time. they are about $160 a peice new :rolleye0012:
they guy that helped me said one guy demanded wheel to not be replaced(was bent) and had weights all around the rim both sides lol :rolleye0018:

I did that a while back and cleaned out the throttle body as well. I also changed the spark plug, but still have some issues with not starting when cold on first turn. New fan clutch - 240+ after 15 minutes
New gauge temp sensor - 220 at speed but creeping up at idle
New CTS - 220 at speed and idle
New Radiator Cap - 215 at speed and idle

The washer cleared it up better. I had some issues, at first I couldnt go past 45 without some wobble, almost death wobble.

Then after the tracbar replacement and rotating my tires, I was then able to go about 55 miles.

Dont have a pic of the washer, It's just the washer that came with the kit and I just had my friend tac it into place with four tacs.

Before the tacs on the washer, I still had a little wobble, after, all cleared up.

Drove it onto work today,
First road test with the new HD Engineering Shackle Relocation Brackets, and the jeep unloaded.
(I had wheeled it with these on weekend before last - but it was fully loaded then)

http://youtu.be/UAAPhiFjjWU

Needless to say it was bumpy as all hell. Prob the worst ride I've ever had.
I know from the wheeling trip that the shackles are at a little too steep of an angle
(they "bottom out"/bind at a certain point in the suspension travel)
The pic below shows the shackle when the jeep is flexed out pretty good, and stuffed on the one side.
http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h328/jbchill1/Jolly%20Jeepers%202014/20140720_120303.jpg (http://s1104.photobucket.com/user/jbchill1/media/Jolly%20Jeepers%202014/20140720_120303.jpg.html)
.....but I didnt think that it would cause such a bumpy ride when the jeep was unloaded!

jeepin_idaho
07-30-2014, 09:54 AM
Is the plan now to change the angle and see what the ride feels like?

My revolver shackles were installed backwards for a while (I don't know why) and the ride was horrible and loud. It limited the spring flex was limited and contacting the body just in from of the rear bumper. Stop I flipped them back around and all was well.

Is the plan now to change the angle and see what the ride feels like?
Exactly.
I'll go one hole back until I get the desired results.
I'm expecting a LITTLE bot of a bumpy ride, I mean it IS after all a lifted - leaf sprung vehicle...but still, it shouldn't be as bad as what I experienced yesterday.
In any case, I will report back my findings/experiences in my build thread (which desperately needs to get updated) after I complete the adjustments.

Today, I couldn't be happier to relearn how to drive ol Cheapokee, yesterday I installed the new rough country h/d tie rod and ends, got her some new shoes, (nothing too fancy, but will do the trick), had her aligned, and as you know, recently had a new rough country suspension pack and steering stabilizer put on. Not with stock length lowers. It will push the top too far forward and ruin your castor angle

You need the proper lowers to go with them. Lifting will only make the castor angle worse with them

rabies

so i would need lower control arms that are same extended length as the uppers? like 1/2" longer? i think theres adjustable ones out there.
the reason i bought them and ask. is because taking a look at the oem ones. they could snap any second. very very thin, rusty, and flimsy

Yes not much to them. Most of the forces are pulling forces though, so they don't have to be too tough. But yes, adjustable lower links are the ticket.

Yesterday I put brakes and two new rotors on the old ladys XJ. while I was test driving it her broken drivers seat pissed me off to the point we made a trip to the junk yard. She had a power driver seat that had the front to back motors burned out and the two front seat bolts were pulled out of the seat frame. So on our trip I found a manual slider that had the correct color seat but had one bolt starting to pull free from the seat. So I took her power seat out (For now) took the manual seat apart welded up the hole that was starting to pull thru and put washers over all 4 holes to reinforce them when bolted down to the slider and that was fixed. While at the JY I got a lower dash cluster that had a factory fog light switch for my XJ (mine did'nt come with factory lights) and a few other odds and ends.

Parked next to a guy tonight at a rib fest I went to that had the same year and trim as my Jeep, but with the exact wheels and lift I'm looking at. Just a different color. Told me it was his ELEVENTH Cherokee. Sold them off from everything from needing money for hospital bills, needing something bigger doe his growing kids, wife making him get something else, ect. Said every time he sold one he regretted immediately no matter how good a deal he got. Told me to hold onto mine. After seeing everything he had done to his and picturing how mine is going to look I called the other guy and turned down his offer.

Well, the brown Santa brought me my soft top that I scored for $175. Brand new Best Top "cosmetically damaged" with dinky little scuffs on 2 Windows that you can't tell are there.

Also picked up a brand new Smittybilt bumper for the yj for $100 that I saw on craigslist.

Thanks bro, probably this Saturday. I want to at least pull the carb and stick it in the cleaner, then install the top since I have an old tarp on it now. I would like to find a front bumper for it too, $100 or less.

Meant to post this a while ago.... I was getting worried that without a headlight housing, a rogue stone was going to get kicked up and take out my headlight bulb. I have H4 housings and HIDs so that would have been a tad bit on the expensive side. So I ordered a set of stone guards on eBay for 10 bucks and they arrived a few days later so I threw them on.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-djHEQsEDlLE/U9nWEXrPWfI/AAAAAAAAMQU/uMjUaioEhnw/s800/20140729_134311.jpg

Took the other side's lens off too so it wouldn't look weird having only one lens... plus, the housing was trapping all kinds of dirt and mud in it so this way the rain keeps the clean for me lol

For the price, I couldn't be happier. They're very heavy duty and they're really rigid. Got my finger trapped in one of them when I was putting them on and the bracket grabbed really hard and actually kinda hurt haha. I think later on, I'll take them off, rough up the chrome and bedline them 'cause I know that chrome finish isn't going to last very long.

Finally got the winch fully wired up after forgetting to ground the solenoid box to the motor. Was kind of difficult because my bumper is the "hidden winch" style, so the winch sits contained inside the bumper. Ended up leaving the bumper on and unbolting the winch from the bumper and rotating it inside to get to the grounding point. Was a pain, but a lot easier than removing and re-installing the whole bumper.

Have a big dilemma right now. After shampooing the interior and seeing how nice it is, I'm debating on throwing a rebuilt 327 in it I have laying around. Body wise this one is much better than mine and mine is clean! (For a brine using state) Also would need to try to find a way to title it. I was hoping on just grabbing the roof rack and flipping it, but it is in pretty damn nice shape :(

Spent roughly 5 hours cleaning out the interior of my new Jeep because it was absolutely nasty. at least now it is livable. Whoever the previous owner was his kids needed their asses beat more often. Interior was littered with fast food and candy, trim and seats were stained from food, dropped pops and colored on with crayons.

Ran it through a carwash.... if it rains the same day you buy a carwash, the local car wash here allows you to return within 48 hours and get a free basic wash. Well, I took the van in to get a premium wash with all the bells and whistles and lo and behold, it rained an hour after I brought it home. Brought the jeep and the receipt and got me a free basic wash on the XJ - had to take the antennas and all the crap off the roof, but it was definitely worth it for how it turned out.

Yeah, there's not a lot of XJ's that color... and they didn't roll off the assembly line that color either (at least not to my knowledge).

I always kinda liked that blue-ish grey color on Kubotas. Real nice high-gloss, coats thick, and hard as a rock.

To return to the fabrication i mentioned before...

For the few days leading up to Saturday I had been working on making some way of mounting my 50" LED lightbar I had gotten to celebrate 10 years of owning my jeep. I already had a predetermined idea of how to mount it so I had to see how it would turn out with a template. All went well, slow, but good. So I had gotten some 1/8" steel plate just for this purpose so I went to town cutting, grinding, and bending. Then I had to drill both the brackets and the a-pillars on the jeep, and then tap the pillars. Some paint and then bolted them up. I couldn't get the hardware I wanted to use so I will end up swapping these out later. Also, I haven't wired the lightbar yet. I am trying figure how I want to run it and whether I would want to go through the roof or not. As well as do something to secure it from the ill-minded thieves that seem to be targeting these lights around Houston.

So here it is...

I advocate doing that too. Although I drill a smaller one. It allows it to open a little sooner and helps smooth out the overall temp by allowing warmer coolant to affect it sooner. On the newer generation of Jeep engines, the coolant constantly flows past the stat in a recirculation system.

This is mainly to allow air to escape the block when filling the system i.e. to help burp the air pockets out and to help to bypass coolant before the thermostat opens.

most german, japanese, korean car's thermostat have a jiggle valve. :D

This is mainly to allow air to escape the block when filling the system i.e. to help burp the air pockets out and to help to bypass coolant before the thermostat opens.

most german, japanese, korean car's thermostat have a jiggle valve. :D

... cant remember when I last saw a thermostat down here ... without one.

What breed of thermostat did you fit - that needed drilling ??

Im a t stat driller as well. But if you can live without the a/c in the xj a simple condenser removal kept my 20 year old stock 4.0 below 210 on a 195 stat. It runs at 195 at a light nonkore than 210. I always drilled the stats on my carbed and tb engines.
Didnt do much this week just hit harbor freight for some new tools to operate on her with.

Hit a few local yards found a few small parts but only came across 3 XJ's in 4 different yards most picked clean, got a few hard to replace hoses after making sure no rot was on the rubber ends. got a new fan shround, new center console lid latch and a right sidemarker lens and a few LED 3rd brake light assemblies from some late model S series.
All parts installed at the yard or at home already.

I'm with Carves re the thermostats and the jiggly valve thingo. All the ones I've come across have had 'em. Always fit the thermostat with the valve at the top, obviously.

But, if I think real hard, :rolleye0018: I reckon the thermostats I used in my old xflow 250, in me Cortina, had to be drilled. Before I flicked 'em all together.

I've only used thermostats in computer controled cars.

I'm cheatin here, with a cut-n-paste from another forum:o

I been playin around with the shifter indicator bezels of late.

Since fitting the update console, I haven't had an update auto bezel and been making do with the pre update one floating around the shifter.
Also, the light on the 4x4 bezel, kept falling out, ??? excuse for LED retrofit...

So, I got hold of a auto bezel, that needed some work, and I got a 5 metre roll of LEDs, for $12 delivered off eBay, a little while ago.

Started with the 4x4 bezel. I carefully pried the light housing from the bezel.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04241_zps0a2b83b2.jpg

Then cut the lower portion off to level the bottom.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04251_zpsdfa387fa.jpg

I got a run of 6 LEDs in there. Stuck it in with the double sided tape.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04281_zps6abdcb95.jpg

Then, I glued the light housing and indicator back onto the bezel. I don't have a pic yet...

Then I moved onto the auto bezel.
The indicator had to be replaced on the update bezel, and the white rear housing also had some cracking.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04101_zps968fdd76.jpg

I decided to cut both bezels to pieces and use the best bits to make 1 good one.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04291_zps2e457004.jpg

I had to use the light housing for the update, as they are a different shape between pre update/update. The updates is shallower and flatter.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04301_zpsfdb00e87.jpg

I also learned why the light was so bright before. There was no diffuser, so the light was shining full brightness through the indicator.

I used small screws to fix the bottom housing back to the bezel. Both are now ready to fit back in the car...

...and to answer any questions as to why the pre-update/update thing, I've swapped an update console into my early '97. CUPHOLDERS:bacondance::bacondance:

It's not so much a difficult job, just tedious. No mounts line up. No biggy though. And the hand brake lever has to be modified or replaced with an update lever, which mounts differently too btw , and the air ducting needs modifying too, by using both pre-update and update ducts and cut and shut. I haven't done this yet.
Then you only need to tidy the gap between the console and dash to finish it off. I'll be fabbing up a power panel, eventually. Ciggy and merit outlets, USB, switches etc.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG0115_zps021c50f1.jpg

... this is just after install. The lid was yuk and a sock was handy, so I slipped it on...

Then I recovered the lid...
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG0273_zps31d6ae83.jpg

... this is the pre-update bezel I was using. It worked, but it looked bogan.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG0274_zpsb73e3712.jpg

... and here is the new bezel with LED technology.
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m596/bruggz351/JEEP/IMAG04311_zps549591d7.jpg

... maybe a bit bright on the 4x4 indicator... . I need to dim it without dimming the rest of the lighting. ???

cheers

The WJ ones dont fit the stock frame mounts. The sales rep recommended the moog due to fitment. I still might have to change out the lca mounts at the frame. The dr side lca is straight hammered. I cant even replace the bushing its that smashed. This fix is to get back on the road before winter. I am off during the winter and im going to be upgrading and replacing ALOT on it.

yesterday, pulled the CPS and started a wiring repair. Splices I made previously (about 5yrs ago) were fine however found a spot very close to the plug where a wire had been rubbed half way through. Not enough wire there to cut/splice it out so will throw some solder on it and hope it gets me by until I can get a new CPS.

the frame side is the issue but can be modified with the front mounts being installed. Im unable to stick weld never learned but can mig but mig wont work for this anyways a good bud is doing it at his shop while im at work, he is going to get the new LCA's in at the frame first since he thinks thats what will take the most time. I dont need any new hardware the LCAM's arrived a few minutes ago and came with the 4 slotted washers I needed(for $40 bucks shipped I cannot complain, kinda happy as the description stated nothing about em neither did the tech rep at 4WD). Ive seen people trim them but bushings dont like the heat of the saw blade, A guy in australia spread his mounts front and rear and drew them back with the LCA installed. I ordered the GC ones im not sure why they used a stock pic instead of the actual part. If its not the right ones I will return em and get the right ones, I am eager to get the tire clearance on turn.

... I didnt get home till well after dark coz we had to wait for emergency services and the helicopter ... to stop taking up space on the highway.

Saw lotsa skippies tonight ..

Yesterday morning I got to install the latest round of doo-dads on ol' Country Crock. It got new hood latches (one of the old ones was broken and they were both rusty)

Old and busted:

Then I replaced the tailgate latch handle because it was broken too.

Well, I have been sitting on a Chrysler 8.25 rear end for dear ol booger butt for about 6 months and well the seals in the Dana 35 were giving up all the oil I could pour... So now I have A Chrysler 8.25 on the back but not yet pushing the beasty. So now I got to find a used 3.55:1 ring & pinion set to pop in. There was a guy in Arizona that had one, I should see if he still does & if so, put some money in his hand...

Dear God I hurt in places I didn't know I still had!

Now to make the Anti-lock brakes work in a Chrysler 8.25, I have a few ideas, Will share once I got the bumps rounded over on it!

Well the end of another day and I can no longer call my jeep a "front wheel drive"!
Mind you the 3.07:1 rear end with 32 inch tires is going to make a less gutsy yet better gas mileage commuter. I think the steering feels lighter to boot!
As I use it to commute 2,400 miles a month, I could use the better gas mileage.

Ah there ever present hobby of JEEP!:xj-black:

I dropped my front D30 off at a local driveline shop for a replacement set of 4.56 ring and pinion gears and a Detroit locker. My Spartan Locker of the pat 4.5 years finally disintegrated and destroyed my gear set.

I also bought new bump stops and steering damper in anticipation of getting this thing back together this weekend.

Well I installed new rear shocks. All 4 bolts came out without breaking! Put BPE, s on as well. I would have bet money on all 4 breaking, but maybe the jeep karma is starting to work. I also reinstalled my rear carpet, washed it with the power washer and some scrubbing yesterday.I also put peel and seal all over the floor and rear wheel wells. Front shocks tomorrow.

Only managed to get 1 lca and mount installed. Was at the welder for 4 days with near zero progress. Paid 125 for 1 side only. I used rubicon express lca mounts which are a beefy1/4" plate and moog oem replacement arms for the grand cherokee. Xj meow pulls to the right...... its alot stronger then stock and even with toasted shocks the ride has improved. Unsure on the weld looks like a baby laid the bead. Guess since my bday is in 7 days I might start howling for a mig welder even louder til she gets the hint. Gonna spend some time with the xj today been too long since we hung out together

If you are going to get that welder, I have been doing segments lately on the xjtalk pod cast on welding. I cover what to get and how to weld. The next Jeep Garage segment will be on doing vertical and overhead welds with a MIG

Wire brush and primer, then paint?
Clean well and use quicksteel type putty with steel net?
Weld a sheet metal?

I am far away from POR-15 thing.

Do you have access to a MIG Od?

nope, stick only :(

I know few welding shops, they have a MIG/TIG etc. no idea about cost. Is it safe near fuel tank?

It is best to put a shield between the weld area and tank. Preferably pull it. You can also replace the metal in the area after cleaning and treating for rust using a pop riveter and calking. That might be the best if you cannot access a MIG where you can have some time to work on it

I was just thinking that if you were able to cut out the too damaged spots, and clean up the rest of the rust, you could throw up some sheet metal from underneath with rivets like Steve said, then bed line the rear or heck the whole floor front to back... that way you won't have anything for items, clothing or yourself to get caught on when pulling stuff out of the back or when climbing in or out of the back of the Jeep if the need arises.. Could probably find some old lisc. plates or even street signs in the JY or other places to use as cheap metal, or heck could pick up some fairly cheap metal for that use @ TSC, HD or Lowes...

Had to replace water pump on daughters G.C.. she said low coolant light came on and when i went to look found puddle of antifreeze on ground.looked like it was coming from back of WP.so i fired it up for a sec..sounded like rocks in a dryer:o .I told her and she looked at me and said "My baby is sick"..that's my girl. went and got it ,started to replace it and of course a storm blew up when i only had two bolts and the hoses to go. Wasn't raining bad so i figured i'd keep going..then it started pouring.I refused to retreat and finished up.Ended up with a happy daughter and a mad wife because of the puddle in the kitchen when i walked in .Was worth it
