Saturday i got the brackets made (1/8" steel) for the LED bar to mount on the bumper. The light is too deep to mount straight on the top of it, thus the reason for the brackets. Weather is killing my chance at a good finish with the paint so gonna have to hold out for better.

Cut a plate out of 16 gauge sheet metal to cover the useless dash panel that i'm going to make my new switch panel out of. Just rough until i get the switches so i can measure it out.

While i had the dash apart to get that panel out i figured i would replace the second led bulb to start flickering in that spot... must be something about it.

Finally fixed my fuel leak! I've had a leak ever since I got my XJ; always smelled like gas but was such a small leak I couldn't spot it. Couple weeks ago while out wheelin I had it sittin on a pretty good incline nose down while we were eating lunch and lo and behold! I saw the drip! Just a little leaker right where the return line was soldered in the access plate. Found one at the local salvage and switched it out...viola! Course, I had to go out Sunday and find that spot again so I could confirm the repair!!!! (That's my story and I'm stickin to it!) :D

Well, this past couple of weeks has been a productive one for me and my Jeep. Let's see...

First of all, I have decided what I will be doing with my Jeep - it's a project vehicle and now I have definite goals in mind, always happy when that finally settles in my brainpan.

Second, I replaced the driver's seat with a later model seat. The driver's seat was broken in two places along the seat platform and it was making for a very rough ride. So, instead of just going with the same thing to replace it, I found a seat from a few years newer model - with wrap around back and an angled base to give a true "cradled" feel. What a difference that makes!

Third, I've gotten about halfway through my LED domelight upgrade. I've tested it out and now I'm ready to solder and install it when the weather warms up a touch.

Oh...and of course, I had a little fun when the weather decided to turn psychotic on me. :)

We have got over a foot of snow over the past few days, and it has been fun driving in it. First time I was happy to have an XJ for my 20 mile commute, it handled it great. My girlfriends Focus got stuck trying to leave for work yesterday, but I got out without a second thought and hour before parked right next to her.

It stopped being fun this morning though. It was -14 all night, and the Jeep was NOT happy when I started her up this morning. I didn't think it was going to turn over, but after some howling noise from the starter it fired up. Was fine after it got going, until the same thing happened at lunch. It warmed up to -5 by the time I left work and she started up no problem.

I sure do notice the lack of ABS when the entire road is ice, but I have never had ABS so I'm used to dealing with that.

Yesterday: replaced valve cover gasket
Today: tried to install new front speakers
Ran into issue with driver's side not working
thought it was just the stock speaker going bad-NOT THE CASE
Wiring from stock radio wire harness is bad to driver's side speaker
Going to bypass it and run a lead direct to front speakers.
Possibly rewire to rear speaker bar as well

Its a somewhat common problem with the '97+ models, running new wire is the fix.

Iron Rock Front tow bar.

And a 4 ton come along hand winch <---haven't decided yet whether this was a total waste of money. Seemed like a good idea at the time...

Spent a few hours at the junkyard yesterday. Pulled the front coils from a 1997 Grand Cherokee 5.2L V8 and the leaf springs from a 1994 Isuzu Rodeo. Didn't kill myself compressing the coil springs so I consider the trip a complete success. I'm shooting for ~3'' of lift so I will probably pick up some 1.5-2'' spacers to even out the front.

Its been an adventure with my auxiliary lights lately. The day i mock up the lightbar one of the driving lights goes out (just a bulb, replaced Saturday), then a couple days later the driving light (one that was still working) wouldn't come on at all, tapped it and it lit... must be a loose connection somewhere but they're working good now. And Saturday i installed the lightbar to find during wiring it the a-pillar lights aren't working. Haven't had time to diagnose it.

But anyway, the LED lightbar now rides proudly upon my front bumper. 13.5", 5,280 lumens, 72w, 24 LEDs of brightness!!! This little light excites me more than a lot of the mod i've spent more time and money on. And blows away my other lights. For the money i am very pleased.

One of the brackets i made.

Finally mounted and wired.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2014-01-11233348.jpg

And no, my headlights and driving lights aren't that dim and yellow, the LED is just that bright it makes the camera dim.

I did get mine on ebay, from a seller in California. Mine seems to be unique in that the seller stopped doing bids and now only "buy it now"s, perhaps because lights were going for $55. :p Looks like they offer the same light for $87 now.

Worked on the switch panel previously mentioned. Our step drill bit only goes up to 7/8" and i needed 15/16" holes so i had to get the files out to finish them up. Worked pretty good.

Also, i looked into the a-pillar lights not working and pretty quickly realized/remembered there is two fuses on this wiring. Sure enough the other was blown. Replaced and back to working like a charm.

not sure what you're working with, but you could use interior snaps that hold upholstery on. If you don't want it visible, you could hide them behind the panel.

Sikaflex, or a U.S. equivalent ... sticks like shit to a blanket.

Same sorta stuff as what holds the internal plastic liners on the XJs doors, update models anyway,

Better than a hard curing epoxy ...as vibrations wont affect it.

Yesterday, I picked up some spacers and new leaf spring centering pins. Got home and started disassembling my Isuzu leaf packs. Was planning on starting lift assembly this morning but of course the washing machine broke so I spent my morning tracking down the problem and fixing it. Now that that's done, I can finally start assembling the rear lift.

ouch. get a 12 point socket one or two sizes smaller then the one that rounded it off. go to harbor freight or someplace cheap and get a cheap one...then barely heat the bolt. take a hammer while the bolt is hot and tap on the socket..let it cool and then attach your rachet or breakover bar and take it off. done it quite a few times and its worked for me about 4.5 outta 6 times. That is definitely on the to-do list. Next step though is front recovery points and a CB so I can finally go wheeling with the local club. After that is tires, body armor, adjustable lower control arms, and a little more lift.

Here she is this morning. Took her for a quick spin around the neighborhood and I dare say she might drive even better now!

replaced leaky drippy fuel pressure regulator, around 2 drops per second just on top of exhaust pipe. Thought it is too risky, decided not to drive until spare one arrives, ordered new one from rockauto and waited 12 days. o-rings were hardened and o-ring diameters:
old small 11,5mm; new small 13mm
old big 27,0mm; new big 27,5mm

no leak :D me happy and drive tomorrow. After replacing fuel pressure regulator, it seems more stable idling and almost no rich fuel smell in exhaust. Will see mpg for few tanks of fuel.

Just as long as it comes with shocks you should be good to go. The brake lines could get a bit tight on droop, depending on your setup. So, keep an eye on them while flexing to see if you'll need to mod the brackets or get some new ones.

And honestly you probably won't need the t-case drop.

Oh, and congrats on the first new kit!

Oh yeah, i think most of us can relate to that. Lol.

No problem with AAL, its just that the old springs are well, old, so they don't last as long. Also, you shouldn't NEED a new track bar. Not sure if your kit comes with a relocation bracket but they are available... or you can drill a new hole to line up the front axle correctly.

I've come to the conclusion it may have something to do with the lower control arm. My brother has a 3" with swivel lower control arms and the remounting the bracket wasn't enough. He's gotta get new ones to be able to fully droop. I guess its really specific to the vehicle.

Got my oil changed. My 97 has almost 206,000 miles on it. I use Valvoline High Mileage 10w30 and Wix oil filter. Sometimes I use Royal Purple Oil Filters when I'm feeling rich. Also, I am prepping my Dana 44 that I got out of an 89 Cherokee. I pulled it all apart, and i sand blasted it down to bare metal. I need to weld on some new shock tabs that I got from RuffStuff http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/about.html Then it will be powder coated. G2 33 spline axles and a detroit locker with 4.88 gears are going in, and I am adding the G2 disc brake package as well. I am also going to use the RuffStuff Diff Cover. That's it for now.

Hello boys and girls! :smiley-computer005:
Guess who's back??? ME! hahaha....

I missed being here and chatting with all you great XJ minds!
Work was super insane crazy busy:crazy:: working 12 hrs days, 9 hr weekends, deadline after deadlines... Finally took a 3 week Christmas break...So that was that...

As far as my XJ goes, I spent a lot of time giving her some love. I replaced all the sensors, changed out the diff. oil, tranny oil & all the typical tune-up stuff. I finally fixed the DW it had. In the last 3 weeks it got progressively worse. I usually drive by about 4 different construction sites in Downtown LA on my way to the office and on several occasions, I would check on the bushings once I had parked, I kept finding chunks missing and broken off. So I finally decided to replace it all! So i've decided to start a resto/mod in earnest. I'm calling it the '88 SPECIAL! I have enough money saved up to really get into it. Last Friday I ordered Rusty's 3.5" advanced lift kit, steering components, motor mounts. I should get it this week Friday.:rolleye0012: I'm hoping to install it soon after. I can't wait! I'm really excited! :xj-blue:
OH! Just this Sunday, I zapped myself with the battery! I felt pretty tingly for a few hours--hahaha

This is what she looks like now::camera:
I'll post a pic once the kit is installed.
Hope everyone had a great holiday season and is having a great year so far!

The sand will go to the roof ~ and there will be no shiny metal (other than the wheels). still pondering before I do the final paint. But I think I'm liking it thus far.

Yeah the dizzy on the bottom of the distributor the camshaft don't move and the gear on the camshaft don't look worn and oil pump seems like it's spinning freely.

4.3LXJ

It sounds like your dizzy is not seated all the way. It is not good to rotate the engine when you remove it. You will have to start with top dead center and stick a shaft down to align the top of the oil pump, which will not work anyway if the dizzy does not turn

Painted (bedliner again..) an old hub and picked up a 5th tire for a spare since the one I had was 2" smaller...
And painted out the black trim line on the driver side because it was JUST BUGGING ME!
Now I know:

and

need black door handles and locks...
have new locks, but they only come in chrome for my year?

Gonna have to pop out the windows and paint the sand under the lip / then I'll be ready to take it over to my friends shop and quick it out with the sand bedliner and touch up the black bedliner sections as well

Some novice who decided to work on Red while it was still my grandparent's Jeep thought it would be a great idea to splice into the ground and completely glue the thing together with rubber cement.

And of course my ignition switch IS bad but there's no way to get it out now short of snipping all of the wires and getting new connectors.:mad0090:

To compliment the 245/70/16 GY Authority tires a 3" rough country coils, rear full length AAL, four Nitro 2.0 shocks, front sway bar end links, new pioneer front speakers and driver door speaker wire repair...still have rough country stabilizer in box as the 13 yr old factory unit would NOT come off for love nor money!!!!! I've actually been thinking about adding a usb charger. Maybe make a new panel where the cig lighter is and have spots for 2 aux plugs and 2 usb's... or 1 aux, 1 110v plug (once i get my inverter installed), and 2 usb's. More to think about i guess.

I may change it over to the panel where the clock doesn't work and ...
Maybe 5 switches (when I do roof lights and such) + the USB in that area.

Eliminated two of the causes of my death wobble last night, replace the track bar bushing and tie rod end. Just in case people need to know, the tie rod end for the Rough Country track back that came with 4.5 inch lifts pre-2012 is ES140R, this was changed sometime between 2012 and 2013, the new track bar calls for ES3096.

I also FINALLY tackled my oil filter adapter o-rings. Unfortunately I'm still plagued by my starter engagement/alignment issues... I will probably just warranty out the starter again now that I've fixed the oil leak directly above it.

If you're gonna start putting huge amounts of inverters and plugs and other various electronics you need to be EXTREMELY careful. The more current draw you have on the factory wiring and wiring harnesses, the more likely you are to set your car on fire even with circuit breakers and fuses. The heat generated from doubling the power draw on your factory lighter socket/plug in, could start a fire WELL BEFORE the fuse blows. We're learning about this in my automotive class and my instructor is a Jeep Technician.

Along the way we found the passenger side axle mount for the upper control arm had collapsed and folded forward. Was able to pry it back into shape with a Porta Power and pry bar, then cut a piece of 1/8 inch scrap to fit and welded it in, achieving a boxed mount, It's so cool I'm gonna do mine just because! :bacondance:

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I'm 99% sure the 96+ XJ has a computer learn process installed. Yeah you can reset your PCM and it will learn for the next 50 starts after the reset. it's actually good to do, especially after any big changes like TB, IM, exhaust, cat, sensor swaps... so the computer will figure out the best air/fuel mixture and such to give for the best operations with the new parts..

I have been going through this jeep since I got it about a month ago and after doing all the U-joints (even the Double Cardan) that helped get rid of a ton of racket, kind of like rock crawling only on the freeway? OK Well there was this other weird little noise coming from the front right that kept whispering " I am going to rip this tire off your jeep if you don't replace this dang u-joint at the wheel" Well, I thought, Yeah... That would suck!

So, I pulled the brake caliper, the Unit Bearing and the right front axle and sure enough, that bad boy was dry as corn flakes in the desert! Tap tap tap plop, tap tap plop then again the old U-Joint was exercised from the shaft and a new 1-0279DG was gently c-clamped back in after putting a bit more grease in it,

(Sure they SAY pre-greased, but I don't consider half-dry needle bearings "Greased")

New clips installed, Cleaned mating surfaces for the unit bearing and the Brake shield, tightened the Unit bearing into place with the 3 bolts as evenly as possible until all were snug, then torqued to 35 foot pounds, then 77 foot pounds. putting unequal pressure on unit bearing is a sure fire trip to needing a new Unit bearing!

No more creepy voices, just happy little jeep sounds!

Time? about 2 hours with trip to Auto parts store, lunch and reinstall.

At this point, I think I am about 85% towards my ASE Certification, just on this :xj-blue: !

Ok well it's been raining nonstop for 5 days so...I didn't do anything to Red. I just stared. And this is my view:

So sad but I have no tarp or anything so I have to wait out the rain to do the electrical and the serpentine belt.

But...

California needs the rain,
Thanks for you sacrifice, that even trumps washing your car!
Hope you find some way to have a great weekend!

Well she's been sitting for almost 2 months so I've been trying to get this done. 3 things left: serpentine belt, alternator, ignition switch harness and the switch itself. After that I can FINALLY fire her up and see what happens. Hopefully the Voltage Regulator wasn't messed up and it was just the horrible ignition switch ground that was fried to crispy imperfection...cause if it's the VR, it's in my ECU/PCM and we're gonna have some problems. On the bright side, she did need a wash so, let it rain. We need the rain terribly so I'm not complaining too much especially if it means I get to go mudding afterward :D

I hope it works out to just be the parts you were already looking to replace.. Hope you are able to get her up and running again soon!!

So I was going to find my old post but why when I can make a new one in less time? :P I managed to pull out the old EVAP canister and replaced it with a new OEM version. Can you tell which one is the old one? I'll give you a hint for all you 'older eyes' :D the new one is black. The old one is gray and 21 almost 22 years old and almost as old as me haha It was the original factory installed EVAP canister.

Fair amount of stuff involved actually. Me and the shop cat spent some nice quality time under the Jeep again. This is all stuff that needs to be done before going on.to more intertaining stuff like full width axles and 37s

I'm curious, I think I understand what it means to clock a t-case but what were you going for when you reclocked yours?

Clocking refers to the angle of the drop, or the offset portion. I messaged the floorboard with a BFH when I put it in. But not enough. The
Atlas has enough holes in it to put the mounting studs wherever you want. Currently Mickey's big hand is on the 7 and after beating on th floor some more I will move it up a couple of inches so it doesn't hang down below the cross member. One of those things coming is some armour for it. Not that you could hurt it much.

so you couldn't do this with NP case obviously. At what point in lift does clocking the t-case come in?

I'm sure Steve will have more to add to this, but from what I've read it mostly has to do with tucking your T-Case safely up and out of harms way. Possibly so you can put in a belly pan to make everything smooth under there.

Actually, you can clock a NP case. Advance Adapters makes a clocking ring. Ut it is not an issue until the front drive line can no longer make the bend to hook up. What I am doing is strictly for better clearance

You CAN clock the OEM T-case in any jeep... the process typically involves buying a jig that bolts up to the existing mounting locations on the back of the tranny that the T-case would bolt to, and provides guides for you to drill new holes to "clock" the t-case into a moar flat position. I have looked, and for the life of me, cant find that jig anywhere (although I remember seeing it not all that long ago)....
Here's a write up I found in my searches that may help describe the process in better detail:
http://www.bsfab.net/?p=23

There are also "clocking rings" or "index rings" that would provid NEW mounting locations once bolted up. This however does require you to sacrifice SOME (not much - but still) engagement of the input shaft.
This one is for sale on E-bay for $55

I also started with a manual tcase crossmember, but it cracked and couldnt find a replacement, I used a auto cross member but had to put a 1 inch tcase drop on it so that the tcasewould sit in the same position.

Finally got my Daystar motor mounts in. What a PITA! Should have gone with the IronMan set but I am by nature impatient; hate waitin for stuff. Looks like they will do the trick tho and they are WAAAAAAY better than the hashed out OEMs that I replaced. Also resealed my Oil Filter adapter, did a full Accel tune up and installed my JY spare tire rack and bumper. Course my spare won't fit it! Looks nice tho! Will probably have to find a wheel with more backspacing or less width. Details, details, always with the details. Great big ol bonus was the new bumper is chrome which looks much better on my Green Jeep than the red one did! LOL

Motor mounts are on the list once I get back home, and in my research I've found out about the great design of having to remove the oil filter adapter to get that bolt out. Can you put the motor mount bolt back in the opposite side so its not a problem the next time?

I used a dremmel to cut the bolt head off ... installed the new mount ... and the bolt is no issue going the other way.
I thought some tard put the bolt in backward after an engine rebuild

jimmixj
02-14-2014, 07:28 AM
I could not, the alternator is in the way. Tell you the truth the O rings on that adapter should probably be changed about as often as the mounts so it works out. The passenger side doesn't wear as much anyway, (at least mine didn't), so I don't anticipate having to do that job again until I'm pulling the motor for a rebuild. I'm at 244k now and showing signs of old age!

Yeah that is a big PITA to do any of the mounts on that thing, but especially that passenger side... Took me a bit to pull that bolt, and reinstall it when we did an engine swap in a co-workers Jeep..

Threw some sta-bil in the tank and parked it. Have a feeling its gonna parked for a while now. Not to try to sound like im a badass or anything, but my jeep built they way it is, it makes the trails around here a little too easy for me. Now that I have two ATV's me and the wife can go riding together. Have had one for a while, but have just used it as a utility vehicle. But today me and the wife took both out to some local trails, and I had way more fun than ive had in a while with the XJ. Not to mention its way easier to find other ATV wheeling buddies. But I will take the XJ to the good places when other buddies plan trips, just not the local places.

I own the XJ for the last 10 years... I decided that now would be a great time to replace the original Radio Tape :)
I bought a 1 din adapter from eBay, but they sent the wrong one, so I had to make one myself:

FINALLY finished the ignition switch service haul-out lol Took me a LOT longer than normal because of the super rain we had for the past month. Not to mention there's plenty of headroom in the seats but not under the dash :smiley-gen165:

I really didn't want to stay under there very long :D

Before (Original Mickey Mouse'd switch):

Yes that's gasket sealer if you didn't know. Whoever did that thought it would be a great idea since they stuck the ground (brown wire) upside down and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't stay in. Solution was to permanently seal it in I suppose without figuring out what would have to be done if it fried lol That last pic was after I removed everything by breaking all the connections off so I could examine the ground and that's what's left of the Mickey'd ground.

This is after:

4575

4576

Honestly, I think it looks way cleaner and nicer since I tried to use the same color wires as well. I even went out and spent money to get the same gauge and color as the pre-existing ones (although I didn't necessarily have to). I figured it would be easier to identify later.

Now on to the Alternator and Serpentine Belt in the next few days. I'll try to fire her up and see if cleaning the grounds for the on-board computer, alternator, starter, battery, A/C compressor (since it's on the same ground bolt as the alternator and starter, factory style), replacing the alternator, starter and the belt had a difference and she actually runs instead of sitting there idling at a barely audible run sequence. If it still doesn't work...new computer lol. But 50 bucks is nothing compared to what I've spent on her already. Wish me luck!!!

You're certainly covering all the bases.
