Finally put my rear end back together after changing the Inner seals. And found a wonderful short in the kicker panel under the dashboard if I hit it right with my leg the whole vehicle dies.

Use that for attempted car jackings! :D

I pulled the drivers door panel apart to diagnose why my power window wouldn't go up. The stupid regulator thing is broken... Again. I somehow got it back together so that it works for the time being. Not ideal but that's better than the $80 for a new one.

I also put in a bit of work to get my storage box and drawers installed. Mostly it was just measuring and visualizing. Maybe I'll more progress in tomorrow.

Picked up some spacers and shackles for cheap and ordered an IRO trackbar and went up to five inches of lift, then got a decent set of 15x10 wheels and got a smokin deal on some 33x12.50 BFGs this last week, so yesterday the Jeep got new shoes, was lookin kinda goofy with all that lift and 31s lol. Probably order some Crown brake lines this week and get ready to cut and fold next weekend.

Well, Mr. DumbA$$ here was wrestling with cutting new u-bolts for the rear springs with my vise and a hacksaw for some stupid reason......:rolleye0012:

Thankfully, my beloved wife comes into the garage and watches me struggle for a few minutes with the first u-bolt, until I realize she is waiting for me to stop...

So I put down the hacksaw and ask the well known question... "Yes dear?"

To which she replies "What are you doing?" "I'm trimming these u-bolts to fit."
"With a hacksaw?" "Yeah, I have a new blade in it.." She takes a long pause, and gives me an odd look...

"With a hacksaw? Are your sure you are thinking right?" It takes me a minute to realize she is giving me the "WTF is wrong with you?" look, and apparently I give her a very befuddled look in return, I did not think I had done anything today to tick her off....

In exasperation, she asks "Why are you using a hacksaw??", to which I apparently give her another befuddled look....
In a very irritated tone, she says "Several thousands of dollars of tools in this garage, and you are using a :sign0055: hacksaw?" She then gestures around the garage....to the mini and full-size chop saws...the portaband...the Oxy-Acetalene torch..the Dewalt sawsalls...and the plasma cutter, rolls her eyes, and goes back inside.

I stood there for a long few minutes, wondering where my brain went.:bang:

ArmyGuy45
06-28-2013, 10:43 AM
I am not to familiar with the fluids that are required for the AW4 but I put Mobile Multi-Vechicle ATF Syntetic Blend that is recommended by ExxonMobil for us in applications requiring: Ford Mercon, Gm Dexron, Dexron IIIH, Dexron IIIG, Dexron IIE, Dexron IID, Dexron II, Jaso 1-A, Volvo 97340/97341

Is this still the wrong stuff?

SteveMongr
06-28-2013, 10:58 AM
I looked at it. It seems confusing with all those applications. But it does say it's Dex V and the AW4 does not like it. It Want's Dex III.
If the tranny is acting funny and all you did was fluid and filter.... than it is confirming it's dislike.
A friend put Type F in his AW4 and lost the first gear. would have to manually shift into and out of first.
I would replace it with something that says on the front label Dexron III. NAPA is good to buy fluids from.

About 1/2 the fluid is retained in the gearbox when you drain from the sump plug.

..... So you may find you need to drain and fill, at least twice, to make a difference.

Well inspection was out on May 31st on the 1998. I like to go have it inspected during work hours since that means I'm less likely to have to wait. My left blinker sometimes works sometimes doesn't. I could hear a sound like dirty contacts make at times so I figured it was the turn signal assembly. I think I'll be getting off early Wednesday, so I'll try to take it then.

I ordered a replacement from RockAuto.com.

Replaced it today, seems to be working well plus it appears to be turning the signal off, when the steering wheel is rotated back, but driving to work tomorrow will tell for sure.

Since the A/C 100% all new, is only running about 58 degrees then warms up to 63 degrees Matt suggested that I pull vacuum on it a few times. Then recharge it. Get any water that might be in the system.

It's pulling it's first 45 minute vacuum now. Hopefully I'll get two in tonight, recharge it and see if that makes any difference in lowering the temp.

I took care of my randomly working/ not working passenger headlight the other day.. I removed the housing and the H4 bulbs, and cleaned all corrosion from the H4 contacts as well as the upgrade harness contacts... I then applied dielectric grease, to hopefully seal out any further moisture from getting in and causing corrosion again.. I'm just hoping this will help the issue I've been having, so I don't get any more freaking tickets for one headlight being out, just to get home and both be on again...

Well I didn't really "do" anything per say, but I repaired a blower motor issue on my 1994 Jeep Cherokee. The original 20 year old STOCK blower motor finally went out and shorted the climate system. So today after braving 115 degrees outside, I finally got to replace it (RIP) but I have all of my climate controls back so I'm a happy man not roasting in my Jeep.

Not a thing, I have a lot of things I need to do to it, but I have to work on the damn truck first, since that is the source of my income. I have a sye I installed in a 231 transfer case just waiting to swap it with the 242 that is in it now. And I do have the ARB compressor and switches hooked up ready to put in the air locker. The list of things I need to do seems endless, but it is fun to install them, not like working on the truck, which is just work.

Thanks! Yeah it seems the blower motor was the problem because the moment I replaced it and kicked it back on, all of my climate controls were back. I'm still going to replace the resistor just to be safe and have brand new parts for the blower system. The 20 y/o stock motor was not looking good at all. I checked inside through the vacuum entry hole and there was so much dirt and contaminates in it not to mention all of the copper was RED not the dark orange it should be. That leads me to believe it was pulling so much wattage that it just oxidized the wiring. One of the wires blew too and was just frayed and split in different directions. I'm assuming that's why it kept shorting. It was probably touching somewhere it shouldn't have. Thank goodness for XJTalk or else I would still be a roasting man!

Used the Jeep to pull out a truck today. My niece just turned 16 last weekend, and her parents bought her a 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy diesel truck. Well she decided to take a short cut through my yard and out of all the space there she found the septic tank. So of course the concrete lid on it couldnt handle a truck that heavy and the front axle busted through. She was up to her frame in shit. Ol jeep had to work pretty hard to pull that damn heavy truck out.

Looks cool, but you may catch some flack from your local PD about it. I got several warnings for the blacked out tails on my old Jetta. Their argument was that even though you can see the lights through it, the light itself is no longer reflective and makes it a hazard.

Yea I was worried about that when I first did it, but the cops around my area are pretty chill when it comes to window tint and speeding. They'll give you like 4 warnings until you get a ticket. Unless you're like excessively speeding. And if they do fuss about it, it's no big deal. The plasti dip peals right off :)

More work on the jeep today... Had to bend my fuel rail adaptor back towards the engine a little and add spacers between the rail/adaptor and adaptor/intake. Injectors are pointed straight now and jeep seems happier. Changed the MAP sensor vacuum line to a little bigger one and got rid of a splice I had half way between the intake and sensor, should help with more accurate readings. Next (hopefully) is 2.5" exhaust and bored throttle body, should finally have my fuel trims around "normal" after that. Whoever came up with the idea that Ford 710 injectors were a direct swap for renix needs a kick in the nuts.
Still need to find a way to make an adaptor so I can use a HO intake boot and run a cowl intake.
One step closer to OBA too, added an oil seperator. Still need a check valve, pressure switch, and some other stuff.

If you are referring to the military tank I have in the cab it is too rusty inside for fuel (I don't want crud in my car tank) I use it for looks and coolant. Of course I have cleaned the tank thoroughly. Later I will fill it with clear epoxy to form a skin inside the tank and make a mount that will bolt to the hatch and use it for fuel. :)

Finally figure out why my xj been overheating radiator is clogged up, drained all the antifreeze and flushed, added water only and water wetter stays at 210 now even with AC running. Still going to replace radiator when I get some extra cash.

My neighbor always sees me working on my jeep, so she asks me if I can change her cracked radiator and check the rest of her cooling system... Of course, being the die hard keeper I am, I pulled it in my garage, had the radiator and t-stat housing off in less than 30 minutes... Upon pulling the t-stat housing, I noticed that the entire head doesn't look like it has been wet in a long time... That has me worried... There was maybe a gallon drained, and a huge crack in a 3 month old radiator... Hmm.... Interestinghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/13/ujaru4ep.jpghttp://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/07/13/enenyjud.jpg

2004 grand Cherokee... Anyone have any idea what would cause a crack that big? T-stat seems to be ok... Gonna replace it anyways... Maybe the place that replaced it didn't bleed the air out? Who knows....

Well, upon installation of new radiator, my detective skills led me to the conclusion that the vehicle had been in an accident prior. The holes for the radiator mount bolts didn't line up. When the last guy changed the radiator a few months back, he made the holes line up, causing excessive force on the radiator. This is why it looks like it exploded. I added a 1 inch rubber spacer on passenger side of radiator rather than forcing it in the "right" position. When I aligned the holes, you could see the excessive twist on the lovely plastic radiator... So spacer needed.. all bolted up and put together. Running great:-) I offered to do it for free, but she insisted on paying me $80... Wish I would get paid for working on mine. I would be rich!

Matt made me get the rubber grommets that the pegs on the bottom of the radiator fit into. He said it was especially needed on a 4x4. All that jarring could cause the radiator to fail.

The details you learn. I would never have thought twice about it. Just another thing the factory does without good reason to me. ;)

I started my day by going to Advance Auto Parts and picking up some coolant and ATF so I could replace my radiator. Got home and got to work. Got everything undone and then... this guy

Alright, so after trying a few different methods of removing that trans line, I said screw it and went BACK to Advance Auto and bought the proper tool for it. Also decided to order a new reservoir too since mine just can't get all the gunk out of it. Had to go back a THIRD time to pick it up lol

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/20130713_162113_zps0cbb447c.jpg (http://s356.photobucket.com/user/thestalliontruck/media/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/20130713_162113_zps0cbb447c.jpg.html)

Finally got the new rad in and all buttoned up.

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/20130713_141630_zpsa9c0f5d6.jpg (http://s356.photobucket.com/user/thestalliontruck/media/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/20130713_141630_zpsa9c0f5d6.jpg.html)

Since I got the same radiator that Mudderoy got, I couldn't use several pieces on this new rad, but I was able to put the support bracket on top that holds it to the condenser and then the main top support on top of that keeps it nicely in place. I didn't have to grind my own bolts because of this :D

Now, letting it idle, it would be fine in my driveway. Moved it to my garage while I looked for steering issues and the high point was...

http://i356.photobucket.com/albums/oo7/thestalliontruck/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/Screenshot_2013-07-13-17-21-41_zpsdc14b1c9.png (http://s356.photobucket.com/user/thestalliontruck/media/Red%20Bandit%20XJ/Screenshot_2013-07-13-17-21-41_zpsdc14b1c9.png.html)

After checking my steering, I found the source of my popping to be the track bar where it attaches to the axle, and that bolt wasn't quite tight enough. Got it as tight as I could and the popping seems gone, BUT the grinding noise that I took a video is still there :(

Anyways, I took the Jeep on the highway for a good 20 minutes at 70 mph WITH the ac on (the ac usually got me up to 240* or so on the highway) and this is where it stood...

Ahhh great news.

Let me try to understand what you said. You didn't use the rubber blocks that have the bolts that stick up through the panel that covers and helps keep the radiator in place? If that's correct I would be concerned about it tilting and getting chewed up by the fan.

Actually, I did use them. BUT, I left them on the bracket that goes across the top of the rad, but the new rad didn't have the 2 bolt holes for that bracket to be held to the rad, so I put it on top with the main support bracket holding it down. Worked great and the sucker doesn't move

That bracket that I'm talking about actually has the holes on each side for the condenser to poke up through. I should've taken more pics, but filthy hands and nice new white Samsung Galaxy S4's don't mix very well :D

I finally got my 600 watt power inverter permanently installed! The inverter is hidden under the back seat and wired to outlets that are easily accessed on that space between the seat bottom cushion and the floor.

Then I remotely wired the power switch to the dash. I'm not totally sold on where to mount the switch though so that may still change but I really wanted to get this project finished before this weekend.

Oh and I melted the stupid harbor freight soldering gun just 20 min of unwrapping the package. News flash: you get what you what for.

Cork gone bad!
...so I swapped out the valve cover gasket to fix a suspected leak.
Used a little red gasket goo to hold it in place and ....

Don't know where I went wrong. It popped out the front corner and cracked!
Tightened too much?
Just a touch more than finger tight!

Filled her up yesterday 15 gal. @ 3.89/gal. Not the cheapest gas I could have gotten in town but the only one that would accept gift cards from Visa.

In other news, she hadn't been driven in a week since I had just gotten back from Tahoe on Friday night. Drove her around and it felt great to be back in a car I knew and enjoyed.

No major problems to report. Get my settlement money by August, will fix all the things wrong with her soon.:D

Well, it's been a week since I've had the pleasure of driving her, I'm excited to give the new radiator a true test this week at work! I need to check the oil and coolant levels, and let her run for a while today so I can check the tranny fluid. Fingers crossed for this week!

Do yourself a favor. Spend the extra and buy the Felpro permaseal gasket. It will not leak and is reusable.

I drive mine daily or I don't go anywhere. MJ needs a battery and tags. Z71 is a real gas hog so it is XJ or walk.

Ordered a new set of Rubicon Express 4.5" rear springs and they are projected to arrive on Monday so I have that afternoon job. Hope it rides as well as my 3.5" ones have.

Well it was Saturday, not today....but determined that the Warrior Products Rock bars, can only take so much abuse, before they end up folding under pressure.

Most likely going to have to take it into a body shop, have the pinch seam pulled back out, and obviously, the rock bars, are going to get replaced with something a little more beefy.
Funny thing is, I have put the jeep on a rock with these bars before....never had an issue.

Wow, yep it bent that rocker. I'd be pissed if I had sliders that let the rocker get damaged.

I've always liked those steps, but looking at it I wonder if the weak spot created by the fancy stuff caused it to bend.

Good question, I have sometimes questioned the integrity of these, but I HAVE really put them thru their paces. They have held up thru a TON of abuse. Just this time I think the force of coming down hard (real hard) with all the weight of the rig proved to be too much.
I MAY see if I can bend this back out, then reinforce them some how....because I DO really like the looks of the steps.

If you can get it straightened out you could weld some plate on the bottom or angle iron to the inside that would add a good bit of strength i would think.

Radiator Test day 1:
Highway with a/c = 210*
Sitting in the drive thru with a/c = 228*
Sitting in the drive thru with a/c off = 210*

I can live with that for now ;) We'll see the rest of the week
