I installed my new to me sway bar disconnects, thanks Dredwolf. I had to cut the lower bolts off of the old ones, stupid torx bolts. They were a little long so I trimmed them down some. http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z348/4jeep/C6972D9B-528B-4999-B818-31A186EBC381-567-0000017CA5DAFC87.jpg

Get one of those boots to protect the mech from water and rust! I mean if it does keep the water out and not just trap it.

Yeah I've found that they tend to not like you doing that!! Heck if I don't spend the money on parts for the XJ that it wants me to spend it on, it seems to act up as well.. I bought a new CD player, the old one still worked, I just didn't like it... and the water pump went out... Bought a new sub/amp combo for it, and the radiator went out... WTF!! LOL.... Thought I was hooking her up apparently I was only hooking her up how I wanted not how she wanted!! LOL...

Thanks, I've probably only got an inch left before the tire contacts the flare on top. The bumpstops are nowhere near the rear axle so I'll need to extend them, but so much more clearance than before the flares.

Still some debris around the area. Crazy. But we were about 20 miles from Edwards AFB so I bet there are plenty of crash sights around us. I never thought one would be marked. I would have to say that would be awesome to see.. Glad to see that there are still ways of remembrance for these fallen Airmen... There is a marked crash site of one up in NH, up in the mountains, that I would love to get a chance to check out one day... Nothing quite like that nearby me in Dover... I'm sure around Edwards, there are quite a few crash sites that you can find....

Crash sites are tough for me as I've worked recovery on 3 sites while in the Air Force. A fully loaded C5 near Ramstein AB and an F16 that went down in an apartment complex in Frankfort. And a F16 that went down on Edwards. I always treat sites with respect the same as a grave yard. The C5 was really hard. I would hate to work recovery for a pax plane that would kill me.

I was going to say if you were going to be headed back that way if you could replace the US flag and looks like an AF flag that is there, as well as trash cleanup would be awesome... that is the kind of stuff I try to do at small cemetaries and different sites around DE and anywhere else I go if I am able too do some cleanup...

XJ Wheeler

Looks like a nice day with the fam, Tom. Doing some cleanup is a good way to show some respect, and help keep the area nice. I always try and do some when i'm out somewhere like that. Parks too. Helps against greenies as well.

:patriot:Yes it was an Edwards flag of one of the flight wings but it was too torn to see which wing. Also had pard of the Air Forces crest on it. It would be neat to find an Army Air Corps flag and place it there.

bluedragon436
02-03-2013, 09:23 PM
I was trying to research that crash online to see if I can find out what squadron it was with, to see about finding a place to order their flag for it... I can't find anything that mentions what squadron the acft was with.. But apparently it just denigrated in mid air @ 8000'AGL.. But I did find a few pics of the memorial site, that show it with a few US flags and an old style AF crest flag.. With lost of smaller parts of the crash site around it... and of course the "required" garbage!!

http://www.aircraftwrecks.com/images/pages/b24f100/IMG_3299a.jpg

** Well after hitting up all kinds of random accident/aircraft damange sites... I found out that the acft was part of the 421st AAF Base Unit based out of Muroc AAF (now Edwards), it was a new squadron too, was a squadron that had been stood up in April of 44... so not too great of a start to the short lived history of the squadron...

Rayburne
02-03-2013, 10:36 PM
Muroc was a town out here that the base was first named after the town got sucked up by the Army and closed down. Parts of the town are still on the Air Base today but you can't drive out there. The town was named Muroc by the Corum family but when they filled for the name they found out there already was a Corum California so they reversed the spelling. The base was renamed to Edwards when a flying wing or a YB-49 co piloted by a Capt Edwards crashed out here killing the crew.

Here's that story

I drove it to College Station this morning and then back to work... bout 90 miles each way, all highway. Figured I would check my MPG's as its been a while & I know its been REAL bad lately. I did this by filling up before I left, then once I got there and then when I got back. No, I dont have one of those fancy blue tooth android app things like msmooresburg.

I got 12.72 MPG on the way up there.

While waiting in line at the Whataburger for my breakfast taquitos my TPS code tripped and it did its run real cruddy attitude so I pulled into a parking spot and changed out my TPS with a spare I always carry with me.(Ive replaced my TPS half a dozen times if not more)

On the way home, averaging about I got 16.79 MPG :D

EDIT: I mispoke, Last spring I got a speeding ticket for 11 over after i swapped my rear axle. I thought that my Speedo was only off by about 4-5%, maybe as high as 10%, but according to the cop, I was going 66 when my speedo said 55(I tried to explain to him but he said "well I think its your responsibility to have that recalibrated") My speedo used to be off by 34%

With the AX15 in mine, my stock gear ratio's were 3.07. I blew up my t-case and replaced with one from an auto that had 3.55 gears. I can't remember why but I had to reuse my original speedo gear. Also I have 33's on her. I found this out by have my girlfriend follow beside me when my speedo said 55, she said hers was right under 75 so 73-74. My MPH times 1.34 was how fast I was going. At first i made an index card with the actual speed compared to mine in 5 MPH increments and put it on the tach side of the cluster. Then I lost it but knew the conversion by heart.

Somehow this time after my latest trans and tcase swap my speedo is right on. I was trying to figure it out the day after the swap and looked over at some honda civic or something at nighttime and could read that there digital speedo showed the same as mine.

I will do that tomorrow and report back. I doubled what I needed so hopefully it works. I hope the inverter will run a small electric saw too cause Im tired of driving through lawns when we get bad storms.

Rather disappointing day. I'll start from the beginning.

After thinking of cleaning inside the frame rails, for say rust, i looked along inside them. Left, okay, a little flakes of rust. Right, , apparently a former resident left a few things behind in the hurry of moving.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-02-071453310.jpg

And trust me, that's not all of it. I can't even reach the rest with my homemade coat hanger retrieval tool. It looks to go down with the bend of the frame.

Once the cleanup was done, i sprayed a little paint in the to aid in rust prevention. And finally after a week the tank went back in. I got everything buttoned up and connected. Sure am glad i needed gas.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-02-071659452-1.jpg

Alright, now for the part i should've seen coming. I go to line the skid plate and trailer hitch up and... without delay... :banghead: :bang: :banghead: :bang: They aren't going to work together. Why not, its not like anything else has gone smoothly. The skid plates sides are too wide for the hitches side plates. So, i thought... Hey, i guess i could cut slits in the skid plate so it could slide over the hitch side plates. WRONG! I'm glad i hadn't cut into it by the time i figured out the main tube on the hitch would have contacted the skid plate about 3/4" before it could be bolted up. Open up the mounting holes?... nope, not enough material. And i'm NOT cutting a few inches off this skid plate. Rustys seriously needs to redesign this thing. Oh yeah, and there's no holes for the exhaust hanger to bolt up.

So, i guess I'm in search for a different hitch that measures up right and i can cut the slits in the skid plate to make it fit. I did measure my brothers hitch and IT looks like it would work. But, he's not interested in a trade.

Or... I guess a new bumper with a built in hitch could work. :rolleye0012: But, of course, there's that money thing to deal with.

So, for now i just put the bumper back on so i can drive it.

Whooooo da thunk it

XJ Wheeler

Nah, the only way that would work would be to add maybe 2-3" to bring the skid down and i'm sure that would cause other problems with the shackle and exhaust. Would cut down on clearance too. ;)

Can you weld the skid to the hitch? Very strong that way

In the manner i would have to do that it would completely loose all structure. The big problem is the whole tube contacts the rear of the skid. I would have to cut a few inches of the back of the skid, and i plan on getting a bumper one day with a built in hitch and removing the hitch. So, then i would have a gap. ;)

Thanks for ideas guys, i just don't think its gonna work. I'm usually pretty good at working situations like this out but these two pieces just aren't compatible.

Repaired my Cargo Area Light

1. Bought Radio Shack Switch #275-1555 around $3.00
2. Using fingertips slowly pry and rock light housing out of headliner.
3. Removed power plug from housing (Careful probably brittle, may be burnt)
4. Separate housing from lense clips apparent, (may be brittle)
5. Remove (slide out) old switch .
6. Solder (2) leads. 1 to common (middle lug) from switch and other to #1 or
#3 lug from switch.
7. Light housing has 2 pins solder other ends of leads here.
8. May need washers
9. Put everything back together

Got board and chose to just put the skid on sans hitch. I did have to drill a hole for the exhaust hanger bolt to pass through. It gave us (had my brother help since this behemoth weighs so much) a bit of trouble going on. Ended up having to bolt the exhaust hanger on kinda sideways to keep it off the skid. Overall, i like it. Well, i like the protection, how stout it is, and the finish. And i'm glad Rustys chose to change from the big "Rustys" letters cutout in the back to just the cool "R". Not their r&d that obviously needs a little more work. Holes for the exhaust hanger, a little tighter fitment on the bottom would aid in better ground clearance, and a little more room for the exhaust would be nice. Otherwise, seems good.

Tip: I suggest to anyone doing this to have a floor jack handy, helps save your strength instead of getting dog tired holding this 60-70 lbs chunk of steel up in an awkward position for 10-15 minutes. And wrap the end with a towel if you want to protect the finish, of course, it is a SKID plate.

That seems to be a common occurrence... I'm assuming it's due to having a nice full pressure flow through the radiator that makes whatever weak spot in it start leaking?!! Cause mine started doing the same shortly after I replaced the water pump..

I put bar soap on the belt and it would be quiet for a couple miles and then start squealing again.

I sprayed white lithium grease on it and it would be quiet for 5-7 miles and then start squealing again.

I sprayed down the front of the engine thinking there may have been crap on the belt/pulleys from swapping the water pump. Still squealing.

I had an old worn belt in the shed so I put it on and no squeal... let it run for awhile and still nothing. Put the good belt back on and weeeeeeeeeeeeeee weeeeeeeeeeeeee.

It was a fairly new belt, I tried to adjust the pulleys but if I tightened it, it would squeal worse if I loosened it it would get better but not completely go away and the belt was so loose it made me really nervous.

I put a new belt on and that little piggy went home. I think something got on the belt. It didn't do it until after I swapped out the water pump. I may try to scrub it down but will at least keep it as a spare.

No, I WILL have to ream them out though for the larger TRE's.

Looked good, didn't see anything bad. Found 2 possible spots where water could've been getting in through a bad seal job though. I couldn't stay and watch, I had to get back to work and let him do his thing.

Today, I went and picked up a steering stabilizer for $10. Got home to put it on.... the bolt that goes through mine into the tie rod won't come off my original stabilizer. The guy told me he'd mail the hardware to me so I didn't have to drive back out there.

I also noticed that the little adjuster on my new-to-me adjustable track bar was loose, so I got her tightened back up again. Feels like it may be stripped though, so I'll keep an eye on it.

Next, I flushed my coolant again. Still getting lots of muddy/rusty water. I think I need a new reservoir since I can't get mine cleaned out all the way even with a pressure washer.

And then...... A-Pillar lights! I got the holes drilled, the mounts test fitted, but wiring will have to come tomorrow.

Got the rest of the tint off, and got frustrated trying to get the leftover glue off. I tried the rubbing alcohol, Goo Gone, and steam from the iron. But... A thought popped in my mind about what light abrasive i could try. So i grabbed an S.O.S. pad and tried it in a hidden area. For this it performs PERFECT. I used it lightly, just in case, but took the glue right off without damage. Then, i ran out of time. But while working i did have time to slam my head into the liftgate again. :banghead:

I took mine up to the one and only exhaust shop to get a quote on having the cat replaced... since the PO apparently thought anti-seize was optional when he installed the current O2 sensor, and the cat was rusted a bit... so when I went to replace the O2 sensor last night in the middle of a rain storm... the O2 bung just decided to spin with the socket... so now I have a leak from that area on my cat, still got a CEL due to a bad O2 sensor, got a new O2 sensor just chilling waiting for a new home... and on top of that I got my damn O2 sensor socket stuck on the old O2 sensor... So got a quote to have the cat replaced, the new O2 sensor thrown in, having the tail pipe welded (finally) to the muffler, the pre cat exhaust hanger tweaked a bit so my exhaust won't rattle on the trans crossmember... and removal and return of my O2 socket... Man there goes money that was going to go into other (wanted/needed) things for the XJ...

Also figured out what is making the chirping noise coming from my electric fan - it seems the part that goes into the support at the bottom squeaks. Glad to know it's not the fan itsself, but now I need to fix that annoying squeak. Also, WD-40'd my driver's side door hinge, helped a bit, and tried to WD-40 the rear leafs, but didn't do it very thoroughly... probably wait until the weekend for that.

I tried yet again to install the steering stabilizer I bought off craigslist. The guy sent me the hardware for it finally. My issue is that the bushing is too thick to fit into the bracket, on top of the fact that the bolt that goes through the tie rod is about an inch higher in angle. Anybody have any thoughts? He had a pre-97 2-door that this came off of... is the stuff that different from mine??? I'm thinking that I may hold on to this and have some of the guys look at it when we meet up, but I have a feeling that I'll have to purchase a new OEM one instead of this $10 upgraded one.

I just installed my steering stabilizer this morning. Like you, I thiught I was going to have to cut the bolt and replace it with another, going in from the other side. But, I took a large screw driver and gently pried down on the drag link and the bolt came out went back in with ease.

I think the angle is wrong on mine though. I put the bolt through the tie rod and I would have to bend the shaft of the dampener to line it up with the bracket. :( I tried putting the other end in the bracket first, and it won't even go in because the bushing is too thick.

I think the angle is wrong on mine though. I put the bolt through the tie rod and I would have to bend the shaft of the dampener to line it up with the bracket. :( I tried putting the other end in the bracket first, and it won't even go in because the bushing is too thick.

Sounds like something is not right with your stabilizer!

Yeah, at least with the new one I bought. Sucks that I have to remove the skid and the old stabilizer to find this stuff out. This is the second time I've removed it just to reinstall it! Getting tired of that.

Did my transmission pan gasket and filter today. Not to bad. The hardest part was getting the filler tube off.

Probably should have posted this day by day but here it goes.

For the last few days (4 out of 5 to be exact) I've been trying to mesh a reluctant skid plate and trailer hitch together, and had a few hiccups while dealing with it. This hitch seems to be made a bit different than the others I've seen. Instead of the mounts turning to the inside they extend to the outside, making it wider. Because of this i didn't need to cut the notches in the skid but did create a few other issues. I noticed "Drawtite" made into the end.

I had to open up the mounting holes about 1/4" to slide the hitch rearward to keep it off the skid. Took a while, did it mostly with a round file.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-031709350-1.jpg

Since I've had so many issues arise i thought it best to test fit the hitch. This delayed me a bit.

First i had to cut about half off the exhaust hanger just to get it in place. Once i had it in place i saw how much the side plate was gonna be in the way. It basically encloses the mounting bolts in between the skid and hitch plate, with the tailpipe just below.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-01013133.jpg

I decided to cut down the exhaust hanger to just a tab remaining on the tailpipe, so i could get most of it out of the way and then drill it for a "new" hanger. Next, i made a L bracket to bolt up to the side plate on the hitch. With a piece of rubber from the old hangers remnants to make an isolator. Don't worry, i'll clean up the rubber piece.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-02201310-1.jpg

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-031626010.jpg

Another thing popped up that was pretty apparent i needed to deal with.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-031530080-1.jpg

So i cut those down. You can also see the tab for the hanger in this pic.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-031625260.jpg

And to make a little more room for the tip, i cut about 3/8" off the bottom of the portion just above the tip. You can see the tight tolerances i'm dealing with, only approximately 1/4" from the tailpipe to the skid, leaf spring, and hitch.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-03150943.jpg

I was running out of time at this point but did want to chop off the corners of a brace. Just to add a little better look, and they added no strength.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-03-031709120.jpg

Today, i got it back off and cleaned off the (most) rust. Was a wee bit more rust than first anticipated. And wrapped it in a coat of black, of the satin variety. Too late for pics, dark out.

Add another injury to the list. Is it just me, or do others have this problem?

Hopefully the final hitch install 2.0 goes uneventfully.

Jake glad to see it coming together.

Got my tire deflators set just right. Then I took it for a drive! Seems the new CV joint in the front DS and the sloppy ujoint straps were actually the cause of the vibes. No vibes now!! Woohoo!! Also picked up a few parts (relays, fuse holders) to get my new lights up and running.

Thanks, bud. Good to see you got the vibes are under control as well. Vibes are almost as bad as overheating, as far as tracking down.

Finally retired my worn out Moutaincats, put on a decent set of Toyo A/Ts for now. I really didn't want to run A/Ts since I'm planning on going to Browns Camp OHV at the end of the month, but I really needed new rubber, and I got these for a really good price. Planning on donating my old Cepeks to a good friend of mine that I recently talked into joining the XJ world.

Removed the factory fog light relay a few days back so I can make use of the low and high beams without having the high beams remaining on... Plan on do perm. fix once the weather warms up...

Yesterday I used Tony's writeup/video to adj my rear hatch, so now I don't have to push on the license plate to get the hatch to open as I pull up on the handle.. (unfortunately I broke one of the holders that hold the clips to the hatch panel, so now it rattles.. will have to do something with that shortly)

Today I got the hardware from RC for my steering dampener that I ordered when I got the shocks for my lift over a year ago, and for some reason it came with no hardware.. I have to stop by AZ tomorrow to pick up another set of bushings for the other end of the dampener and I'll be ready to throw it in... Can't wait to feel the difference, as I know the stocker is shot... and def not up to the task of keeping up with the 33's... So hopefully tomorrow after work I'll be able to throw it in...

While under my XJ today looking to see how bad the leak is around the O2 sensor on the cat, I saw that my TC is leaking, I believe around the speed sensor, which sucks cause I just replaced that O-ring when I did the speedo gear... , also noticed my rear main seal is leaking, so guess while I'm at AZ I'll see about picking up that seal and the oil pan gasket, so I can get it done as long as the weather stays nice before I head out on my next mission... guess I'll go ahead and hit up an oil change since I have to drain it all anyways... Also noticed my front pinion seal is leaking now... guess I'll be pushing the re-gear to happen as soon as I can (along with some other upgrades while I'm there)... I think my trans lines may even be leaking now as well... but going to check the connection @ the rad, as I did just have the radiator replaced...
