played with the clutch master cylinder and the hydraulic lines today. To no avail i parked the poor girl contemplating what shall be done.
Maybe a trip to the tranny shop.
Maybe buy a different jeep and start fresh.
Maybe buy the parts needed to convert to 4wd.

Well where to start. A week ago I removed the motor mounts and cut the broken rubber out out of the cage and put poly mounts in :) Then noticed I bent the power steering line and it started to seep when I bent it back so I tried to tighten it :( it broke, ordered both lines and thought damn that radiator hose is so close to the steering lines I'll have to remove it to get to both the lines, I better replace both the rad hoses so ordered those as well with new clamps and coolant might as well do the oil and filter as well. So that was today. All hoses on and oil done and up and running. What fun.

Yes, the glass is still in the door and still holding where they stopped at when I was trying to get them rolled down.

Well as stated above, my jeep has had quite a bit of wrench time lately. Last week I swapped out the AX15 and NP231 from a XJ I found at the LKQ junkyard. The Jeep was actually owned by Matt, Msmoorenburg, and sold to another local guy we know.

Anyways it was at the scrapyard :(, I pulled the bumper and steering box brace for Bear and Matt on the 27th of last month and then the trans and t-case on the 29th. I swapped out the ax15 and np231 on the 29th, then yesterday I swapped out the Exhuast manifold from that same jeep. It was an after market one with the expansion pipe coming from the # 1 and 6 cylinders. Now i get to hear all the squeaks and pops that my jeep has since my exhaust noise doesnt fill the entire cabin. I also pulled the valve cover to replace mblown out gasket... it was REALLY leaky. Put in a new Felpro rubber/metal frame gasket and also a felpro gasket for the manifolds.

Started looking at some new shoes for it... and looked at picking up some tint for the front two windows... Just going to match the factory tint.. either way it's unfortunately illegal here, so will have to remove it for inspection in a few months anyways... so figure might as well do it myself, instead of paying way more money for professional installation, just to remove it for inspection, unless I can manage to register it in SC, where I can have it however dark I want, oh the mods that can then happen legally to the XJ!!!

Today was remove all the stock fender flares. repaired some of the trimming and beating done by the previous owner. I'm thinking maybe changing the right fender but will wait til I have the new flares. Ran to the front door when the fedex truck pulled up thinking yes the new front bumper is here. But no he was delivering a package across the street. Bummer.
Took the jeep for a bath at the local quarter car wash. $4 later it look pretty clean. Preformed a lazy mans drying by taking a 5 minute drive down the freeway and back.
Damn that was a lot of work maybe I can get a nap in before the wife gets home.

If it's anything like Texas' inspection laws, you don't have to have windows to pass inspection... Roll the windows down and remove the fuse or something so they can't get the windows up. If they can't test it, it'll pass. Same with a windshield. You don't have to have a windshield to pass, but you have to have good wiper blades.

The improbable, even near impossible has happened.
.
.
.
.
My fuel tank skid has arrived.

Took two and a half weeks for "in stock" items to arrive. A week and a half after ordering i called to find out what's up, i got the old "its going out later today". Anyway...

WOW, was this thing tossed around. I was APPALLED to see the condition of the package laid upon my walkway, yes right in the middle. Not on the porch, to much trouble to go that extra three feet.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-07180510-1.jpg

I am very surprised it arrived with the few bits of cardboard still dangling from its carcass. I'm still not sure of the whole count of holes in it. But most were approximately a foot in length for reference.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-07181026-1.jpg

And believe me, there was more.

But i did get a pretty big preview before even opening it.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-072020090-1.jpg

I got the Rustys fuel tank skid for '84-'96, as well as the nutstrips they sell. And i have to say it is a beaut'.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-07210025-1.jpg

Yep, 3/16" steel for the bottom that bends up for the front and back, with 1/8" on the side uprights.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-07211423.jpg

Thankfully it has an amazing coating that even after all that abuse it only have a couple very minor chips in the corners.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-07210543.jpg

The nutstrips and hardware.

http://i1108.photobucket.com/albums/h401/xj-wheeler/Stormy%202/2013-01-07214552.jpg

Now i just need that hitch, hopefully they mesh well.

I plan on cleaning up and painting the area during installation, especially since mines prone to rust.

Alright, i am done. You may go back to your lifes now.

Last night I cleaned the sticky stuff from the warranty paper from when I bought it almost four years ago off the passenger rear door.. as well as cleaned the rest of the inside windows and wiped it all down to clean up all the dust and such...

Today I'm working on a deal with a guy up in PA to pick up a HP30/Chr.8.25 w/ 4.56's & a set of 16" rims w/ rock rings on them... I'm hoping I can pick up both of these.. but either one of them would be a nice addition to the XJ... and a nice step towards what I want her to be!! and having spare axle parts won't hurt either!! LOL

Well there was no wear on the water pump and I'm thinking this was done at the factory to provide clearance between the #1 cylinder and the water pump.

Yeah, that was my first thought. I didn't want to have to search for hardware. And the shipping wasn't cheap, almost $50. I tried that tip of calling Rustys to try and get cheaper shipping (read it worked) but no go.

The tires came on the Ghia when I bought it but they rubbed a bit on the rear. When I put the car back together, I put some 185's all around on the stock chrome rims. The Dunlops on Empi's are just taking up room in my shop. I'll take $400 for all. There's not much VW crowd around here. I can send you some pics if you like.

So tomorrow I need to buy a new puller when in town. I'm thinking I may buy a new gearbox in case. I can always return it later and save a drive of 50 miles when I break an ear off the pump or break an easyout.

Can you borrow a puller at a parts store? And if you are going to buy a new box, the larger box off a heavier rig, like a V8 Durango will bolt in and give you about 40% extra push on that drag link

Got the vacuum bottle/little black bomb to the pax side near the firewall but on the wheelwell. Then got the 2 holes ground out that are half blocked by the swaybar bracket inside the frame. Now just awaiting the gearbox spacer. Then everything can go back together. I did get a Durango steering box plus I got the bolt out of the old gearbox, means I've got spare. :)

Here's what worked for me...I first disconnected the negative side of the battery (this is necessary, so I've heard, so the computer would "reset"). Remove the Air Intake, Remove the throttle body linkage, Unplug the IAC and TPS, Then remove the throttle body...very simple (I also purchased a new TB gasket beforehand). Then, removed the IAC and TPS (much easier when the TB is removed first). Used THROTTLE BODY cleaner with a toothbrush on every part of the TB, in and out until spotless...then GENTLY scrubbed the IAC with a toothbrush until spotless also cleaning the TPS as well. Re-Installed the IAC and TPS onto the shiney TB and re-installed the TB with a new gasket. While I was at it, cleaned the negative post on the battery as well as the cable end. Put her all back together and started her up...Purrfect! Runs great again, and feels better when I mash the throttle...total cost about $5! Only took about an hour.

Lol, few reasons for that. Matt's shop is about an hour away, plus I had to take Patrick home after his broke :P The other reason is that my fuel gauge is off. Says 1/8 tank when it's 1/2 empty. I don't mind, because it feels better on my wallet to fill up half a tank at a time ;)

Did a rotation today to try and cure my wobble/shimmy, but i didn't have time to test it. Fun doing that with two jack stands. Checked out the front end parts by trying to move the front tires while i had then off the ground, seemed fine. Axle u-joints too.

Might have to plan one of those wrenching parties, the rear brakes are a bit worse than i had thought. Planned on doing the disc swap anyway, just didn't imagine it would be this soon.

Looked at a couple threads on cutting the lower rear quarter panels to match the fenders but didn't get the grinder out
bought some black paint for the fenders where rust is creeping in
looked for shackles for rear bumper, no luck yet.
greased all the zerks on the front DS while I had it off. I'll prolly paint it black later

Also measured out and started planning out a storage drawer setup for the back of my XJ, to remedy my foot locker that takes up way too much space right now.. that way I can still store camping gear on top of it and other stuff I want to haul... instead of having to take the foot locker out of the back like I have to do now, if I want to carry anything back there... to include my MT. bike...

Also, got to drive it today for first time after rotation. It is better. Still getting a little something but not feeling it in the wheel anymore. Thinking its probably just the wear pattern on the tires. Time will tell.

Oh oh oh, and i figured out i can plug my phone into my radio (i have a cord that connects to the radios aux inputs and has a speaker jack on the other end to plug into the phone/mp3/whatever that i used for music) and make calls. The in coming plays over the speakers and the other caller can still hear me. Sorry, it just astonishes me that it worked without having to have something else like Bluetooth. For the first time in about 2 weeks, I drove the XJ. I can't believe how much I actually miss it. The Rodeo is a more comfortable ride, but you just can't beat the obnoxiousness of the XJ. It also gets better fuel mileage than my Rodeo. Those 3.07 gears sure do help out compared to the 4.30's the Rodeo has. If the Rodeo keeps giving me issues, I may just sell it to fund better things for the XJ. Who knows...

Did not have the time intended, but primed and painted the JCR nutstrips, and got out the inspection camera to check out the inside of the unibody tubes.

Tried to get plenty of PB Blaster on the front leaf spring bolts inside the unibody tubes, and gave each a good solid pounding with a Engineer's sledge for 60 seconds, soaked again, pound again.

Am I right that those front spring bolts are 21mm? I found out that all I have 21mm in is deep impact and wrenches. And my son found out that Dad is right when he says "wait a minute" when you try to use an impact socket and 6" impact extension with a big breaker bar, you end up with a twisted extension.:bang:

The install wasn't to bad either, I got comfortable operating the cut off saw, here's a pic from a different angle. http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z348/4jeep/C6ACC739-CAE2-4B05-91D4-A495AFBCA305-147-0000001B7C14ADB9.jpg

Congratulations, Jim! I know that's been a thorn in your side for some time.

I myself was less fruitful. The afternoon showers kept me from painting, and due to my excess time i am now second guessing the color for the hitch.

Thanks bro. Why are you second guessing the color?

Just on how much i want it to be seen. Gloss black, satin black, and if i really wanted it to show up, the same grey on the lower body?

I'm a fan of satin black... don't suppose you'd paint it red anyways ;) Gray would hide it better, but personally I like stuff to stand out. Of course a coat of bedliner will keep it nicer longer

Finished up the bushwacker flat flare install, I'm liking the new look and the much needed tire clearance.

The only red on it shall be the tail lights. :p I like satin black too, and its easier to fix a scratch/scrape in case i drag the rear offroad.

Wheeled it Friday AND Saturday! Minor rub on control arms and frame at full turn with the 33's and a tad on the inner fender when flexed. I'm guessing a need some spacers for the wheels. Also the tranny is getting HOT. So much so that when I put a finger in 4x4 shifter I can't stand touching any metal in there for more than 5 seconds. I know I've got a small crimp in the hard lines going up to the cooler so I'll patch those up and see if it helps. It was just really nice to get out and throw a little mud around.

Well, I swapped out my IAC (tried cleaning it first)...my 92 keeps doing this weird idle thing...almost stalls, then revs up to about 1200rpm, in park/drive. I've gone thru the whole TB removal/cleaning, disconnect neg...etc. Guess I'm on to the TPS next...this is a real PITA! Anybody else run into this problem...any input would be appreciated! I've recently installed a Magnaflow cat and DynoMax cat-back...think maybe I need more air? Cold air intake? Just started a few weeks ago when the weather temp dropped.

Dont think its your exhaust. Ive ran mine with no cat and a very free flowing muffler and it didnt do anything like that. I would assume IAC or TPS. Also use some wd40 and look for vaccum leaks.

Didn't PLAN on doing anything to it today, but my dumb butt didn't test drive it yesterday after hooking up my transfer case linkage, I only shifted through all the positions. Well, this morning, I pull out of the garage and when I turned the wheel.... I was in 4 wheel drive. Crap. Tried shifting through positions again, same thing. Time to go under the Jeep again and be late for work ;) Finally got it adjusted enough from underneath to be in 2wd. It's not adjusted correctly because my lever is off, but it works for now until I have more time to mess with it.

That's no fun... Although might've been quicker to just find and alternative route to work. ;) Seriously though, you've had enough trouble with that thing. Hope its fixed easier next time.

Thanks bro. The thought crossed my mind to just drive, but I'm pretty sure it was in part time and its more than 20 miles to my first stop. With my luck it would've been the end of my transfer case. Now if there was a mud trail to take up there... ;)

This sounds familiar... didn't we have the same issue when we tried to adjust mine? Maybe we should have a transfer case linkage adjusting party soon (mine still doesn't feel right either).

agreed. if you're exhaust was restricted it might cause problems. opening it up just lets her breathe a bit better :rolleye0012:

Had CLehman (http://www.xjtalk.com/member.php?u=2598) and a couple other buddies over on Sunday, finally got my fenders cut and my bumper on that I bought last fall.

I left the lights off, just mocked them up to see how they'd look. I think I'm gonna need to relocate some light tabs first. But first I need a couple more inches of lift, 3 inches isn't enough (that's what she said lol)!

Started the process of installing the fuel tank skid and trailer hitch. Got the bumper and old hitch off, as well as got the "new" hitch into a nice coat of satin black.

Bumper came off easy since i had replaced it a few years ago, but... The hitch was a (rhymes with hitch). Took over an hour just for those six bolts. Broke 4, cut off 1, and the last one creaked with every turn.

Looking and measuring it looks as though the new, bigger hitch will be just over 1" lower than the old one. This appears as though it will interfere with my exhaust. Guess i'll have to deal with that later.

You brought back memories I thought I suppressed. I think next time I need to remove my hitch I will just eat ramen for a couple months and get one of those bumpers with a receiver and more importantly RECOVERY POINTS built in.
