Built me a new drive shaft...
So I went to a guy over the week to get my drive shaft shortened a tad since the new axle site closer to the t-case and I took some measurement... apparently again Im an idiot and gave him the wrong information... and I PAID him $40 for getting my drive shaft TOO short soooo NOW what?
well I decided to take what he gave me that he removed as a guide and started looking for a sleeve to lengthen the shaft a little more
This is what I found:
top right is OE drive shaft thickness
lower is part of an old axle tube I had laying around that had a seam in the center
and upper left is some steel pipe I obtained from a job last year that I never used( no seam on the inside)
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG196.jpg
OBVIOUSLY I opted for the seamless pipe cause it was thicker and required the LEAST work
so THEN I cut my drive shaft in half with my chop saw
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG191-1.jpg
and cleaned up the remnants
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG192-1.jpg
the new shaft which was 1.75 inches longer
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG193-1.jpg
dropped the cleaned up portions into the new sleeve
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG194-1.jpg
MORE than a perfect fit!
lined up the other end to be in perfect alignment and sunk the other end into place!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG195.jpg
these fit SO nicely I just had to tap them in very slightly
welded her all up and ground it down to a smooth finish
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG197-1.jpg
Installed into place!

Youll lose a little rear wheel hp with that driveshaft, but should be unbreakable. The only thing I MIGHT be worried about would be the extra weight on the rear output bearing on the tcase.

XJ4IV
04-21-2012, 11:05 PM
not worried TOO much on HP I have the 5.13 gears and probably wont be on the street much and the bearing easy
replacement if it becomes an issue! I definitely could have gone thinner sidewall but I HAD this free and I could weld it up and not worry about blowing through... I know this much will not happen I wont bend it on a rock and I wont twist it when I get stuck!
the overall weight of this shaft is only about 3-5 lbs more MAX over the OE one

Today the new tranny mount was installed (Thanks to BigJim for the work, and thanks to Matt for the use of the shop). Rotated the tires when I got home... I'll know when I drive it some more whether or not the vibes are fixed. Re-installed my front driveshaft and tomorrow I get to figure out why my t/c shifter feels like it's not connected to ANYTHING. Freakin great.

Also.... out of the kindness of my heart I don't have photographic proof ... but sombody may have ridden in and worked on a RED Jeep today.... But we'll just say "pics or it didn't happen" ;)

Yeah good mate ...

Little XJ ran like a charm as usual ... way overdue for a proper tune and stuff ... but still pulling 20mpg on the highway.

Bought some breeding chooks at the poultry sale, saw a nice ol' buick in the carpark, Mates daughter collected her "new", used aussie GM V6 sedan and we all cruised back.

... wonder if she'll notice if I swap the XJs one hole injectors for the Holdens 4 holers .... :D

Positioned the Viair 2.5 gallon tank just behind the transfer case to see how it might fit. It hangs down maybe 1/2" more than the transfer case. I think I'm going to use nutserts to bolt it to the floor. May need to consider some sort of homemade skid for it though.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-6v-04OsC83M/T5W2XOJ3O3I/AAAAAAAACEY/vzpPqaBYb8c/s1024/20120422_202355.jpg

Got the measurements of the washers I'm using to help keep the drop pitman arm wiggling. Hopefully I can get an nice 1/4" thick washer custom made and stop the wiggle.

I found the driver's side wheel was further back than the driver's. Did some measuring and found there was about a 1/4" difference between the two lower control arms. I adjusted it out, so not it matches. I didn't notice any issues driving, only that the tire on the driver's side would rub the inner skirt. We'll see how that goes tomorrow.

Well the wear on your front tires is commonly caused by worn shocks. So might be a good time to replace them anyways.

Shocks were actually fairly new according to the previous owner. I think he just screwed that one up when he put it in. I already tightened it up before and found it was semi-stripped. Oh well.

You remember that metal clinging sound like something was loose? I think I narrowed it down to something inside my brake drums. I'll probably wait until this weekend to check those out.

Got her done tonight :D Pay no attention to the bushing on the left there... that'll be fixed soon too ;)

Checked this bulb and almost everything I know and my hand reach. Recently I had/have headlight flashing issue (after driving 15-20 minutes; turn off and on again 3-5 seconds). What actually inside headlight switch? is it possible to drain current through switch (even in off position)? :bang:

Planning to disassemble whole dash panel this weekend.

Your headlight flashing is it just go dim and bright as your driving with the headlights on? My 2000 did that and found the wire to the alternator was loose the one with the 10mm nut,and my battery wouldn't charge May check it and all your grounds under the Hood

Mine went dead the other day too...had it checked out and everything seemed fine. Then I replaced my power window controls I picked up at the XJ store (JY), my driver side button was snapped. Now my power locks and radio stopped working!!! I'll check it out when she comes back from the shop. Got the final OME stuff...finally (only took a month). So, UP SHE GOES! I wish I had the time and facilities to do it myself...too busy at work...so $1500. outta my pocket. Ouch!!!

Noticed I had spider webs on my tires.. so.. I DROVE IT! just moved it to another spot in the driveway. Gotta give the starter some attention as its slow crank is getting worse. Im thinking its just oil on the solenoid from pre-RMS job. Then I gotta get the new power steering box in. BTW found a refurb on ebay for $40. Thats cheaper than the JY!

Pulled window motors/regulators out of the 2 door. 70 bucks I didn't have before.
Pulled sound bar.

Cleaned 89 out, tried installing sound bar in the dark. I was told there was a harness and it was PNP, it is not...
Drove it.
Was told it can be heard from a mile away and sounds like a tractor... Lol

Will finish cleaning, pack for Jeep blessing tomorrow, and hopefully install the sound bar tonight.

Well that's some dedication there! This answers my question on your other post, about what you were having done.

The thing I have found, sadly, that no matter how good a place is (in my experience) they never NEVER give it the attention I would. Well one exception, Matt's shop, but really it's just a hobby for him.

As much as I dislike getting so hot it drains the energy out of me for a good couple of hours, I know if I want it done right I have to do it myself. It also helps when it isn't done right because you have the knowledge of how it went together and usually how to fix it.

I'll be installing a 4" lift on my wife's TJ this weekend.

Al, glad they got it fixed for ya!

I go back and forth on this debate with myself all the time. For example, I've got a shackle relo kit sitting in my garage thats been there for a few weeks. I'd love to have an extra saturday morning to put them on, but I could also drop the jeep off at a shop on the way to work and likely pick it up that afternoon or the next day. Then spend my Saturday out wheeling it enjoy my newly lifted jeep. Never enough time to get it all done.

Yesterday:

Got the rear end suspension back together. XJ leaf pack + extra XJ main with the eyes cut off + RC long AAL. I also threw on a set of 31's that were on a set of gamblers I bought awhile back.

If the wheelbase was afew inches longer, it'd have a nice rake. I hope to knock out the front tomorrow.

Permanently mounted the CB. I didn't have any spare coax, so I didn't check the SWR.

Drove up to Matt's place yesterday. Replaced the drier and A/C line that has the orifice tube in it. Then did the normal vacuum and recharge. Now the 1999 isn't running at 50 degrees it's running at 40 degrees! (Okay 41)

The battery died, went and had it checked then bought a new one this morning.

This is my oldest daughters daily driver, so I'm glad the battery went South on me while I was driving it and not her.

well yesterday I introduced the jeep to his new brother...Jim
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/IMG008.jpg
So today they went out for a bit and played around
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/DSC00790.jpg
then it was on to spoiling the two of em!!! first the jeep was up for an oil change and coolant flush and get those new shoes!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/DSC00791.jpg
then Jim got an oil change on his foster parents dime!!!
and at the end of a pampering day we headed home...

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/DSC00794.jpg
once they realized the fun day was over the jeep threw a temper tantrum and got all messed up!
http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/m590/XJ4IV/DSC00795.jpg

Jeep got a little upset once I started laying into him and blew a power steering line but we got all straightened out! (I really need the front drive shaft)

yesterday:
bought front driveshaft
bought new bolts to MOUNT said driveshaft
bought strap kit for front axle
found out that FORD is GAY... the cannot stick to the norm when it comes to sizes on ANYTHING the 85 rear axle is one size u-joint... the front is a different size... which is BIGGER though a smaller axle... not to mention the stupid lug pattern HAS to be different than chevy and dodge... ALSO at one point some IDIOT decided that it would be a cool idea to do a 7 lug pattern... for REAL ford pull yer head out of yer arse and get with the program... no wonder ford has more issues over the years than dodge or chevy! they made a GREAT motor 7.3 lasts 1/2 million miles on average but THEN the decide to put it on the chopping block for just about the WORST motor theyve built the 6.0... then they bombed THAT one and built the 6.7... which they are in the works on re-vamping that one as well... and thats just ONE vehicle they bombed!

We work on them daily, your right the 6.0 can be built to be a decent rig but the cost is horrific we do the studs, oil cooler upgrade and the bulletproof egr cooler, the 7,3 is by far the best diesel ford has made , jury still out on the 6.7 as I am not to keen on the variable twin turbine idea but we will see.

Drove it to the shop yesterday so they can hopefully track down this annoying randomly overheating issue I have been having... If my wife has anything to say about it today and tomorrow might be spent looking for a replacement for the XJ!! But I am still more than happy with it, and will continue to build it and take any issues in stride... all things considered it has been a pretty decent vehicle for being almost 14 years old... I honestly think my random overheat issue is the radiator being clogged or something... guess we'll see what their diagnosis is after they look at it and hopefully fix it tomorrow..

It's kind of a "love/hate" relationship! It's a pain in the hind-quarters to try and track down the problem, but at the same time, it's so satisfying when you get it fixed.

So.... replacement? As in, a new daily but still keeping the Jeep? I'm planning on doing that in the fall. Gonna get a gas-sipper to drive for work. Gotta admit... the Cruz Eco is a sweet car (Turbo charged, I believe). Drove a brand new Cruz 1LT for a week in Austin on business. That's what I'm eye-balling

Well if I have anything to say about it, it will be just a replacement DD, and keeping the XJ for fun times... But if she has anything to say about it... it will be a complete replacement for the XJ all together!!

While I was painting the diamond plate to go on the side of the Jeep I went ahead and painted the aluminum diamond plate transitions.

Funny how that happens! I think I've convinced mine to let me keep the Jeep. Otherwise no deal!! Now, convincing her to let me spend money on the Jeep when it's retired to "toy" status will be another challenge!!

was laid to rest and NOT a problem!

I was worried that I wouldnt have much up travel when the differential housing meets the trac bar mount... I seem to have enough room to stuff fairly good!

as I said videos are taking forever to upload so I will post those few tomorrow!

Finally got to go home for a while so i cranked it up. The battery was near flatlined, after seven years i think the optima is finally dying. Anyways i jumped it with the broncos battery and it ran great.

Also tracked down a coolant leak to a flushing tee fitting i had put in the heater hose.

put an extended idle switch on my 99 today. It took about 15 minutes total. Use Pin12 on the ECM.

The same thing that came standard on police model XJ's. It bumps the idle up a 100 or so rpm's at idle.

For everyone else that still didn't know why this would be a good thing (I know I didn't...)

When the ECU sees the signal, the ECU increases IAC motor to maintain 1000 rpm, but only IF the transmission is in N or P.

the 1000 rpm setting is ideal for extended idle in high heat conditions with a/c running and alternator pulling power for radios and high output lights, to avoid depleting the battery, and serve mainly to increase coolant flow through radiator and fan speed to cool things off.

There used to be trails that we would ride our quads on all in the woods around my house. I think the Paper Co. owns/d all of it and then put a stop to it. There were some Great trails out there.

I dont remember the drop, is that where the boat was that we moved? I know we went up like a rock ledge on the side of the creek, and then you came back down it, is that the ledge to which you are referring?
