I just installed a new stroker motor in my xj and forgot to install the trans dust shield. Is this a necessary part or will it b ok without it? I really hate to break the trans loose again to install it.

I have run rigs without them. Didn't seem to make all that much difference. But if you are going to run in deep mud, I would put it on to keep as much stuff as possible out of that area.
or if you are in very dusty conditions

Aint got no whistle, don't belch out smoke, but my V10 aint no joke !!!
You forgot the upper part correct, because on my 89 the lower part can go on anytime, the top one acts as a shim for the starter also.
Should alway be installed. As stated on early XJs they act as a shim.

I forgot to put on a Ranger onetime, I just took out the bellhousing bolts and pulled the trans back enough to clear the dowel pins and pushed the shield in and bolted it back up.It was a stick though.
