Are you asking what the differences are???????????
The parts inside are interchangeable so I would thing all aspects of them are interchangeable too.
If you are looking for an indestructible T-case then neither one of these are.

I think I read somewhere that the 231amc was built before chrysler bought out amc,and afterwards it was called 231j.I think the 231 amc case will have21spline input and the 231j might have a 23spline input shaft.HTH
This is a direct quote from the Novak web site but sums it up pretty well ,
"The Jeep NP 231 transfer case was introduced in the 1988 model year. Jeep's YJ Wrangler and the XJ / MJ Cherokees with the Command Trac option were the first models to feature it. The 231 was initially tagged as the 231AMC, and as ownership of AMC was taken over by Chrysler, it was later designated as the 231J. This transfer case was later to be called the NVG (New Venture Gear) 231J. Despite the different nomenclature, they are essentially the same transfer case, with the bulk of their parts interchanging. "

As long as the splnes are the same all should be fine as for the sye... Should be no problem

All AMC 231s were 21 splines and the 231J can be either 21 or 23 spline depending upon which year Jeep it is from.
