I don't think Jeep really did much of what we consider good stereo systems until 99. At that point, it was the Infinity system which has its own amp. But in reality my Sony deck puts out as much power to the speakers as that amp. I believe it is a 140 watt unit. It wasn't the type of amp that would run a sub.

A new stereo isn't on my list of things to do in the near future, was just wishful thinking.

although 90% of the factory stereos out there do not have factory pre-amp inputs or outputs.... you CAN run a high to low level converter.
Takes high level signal (deck output) and converts it to low level (pre-amp)
These are super cheap... even the higher end ones that give you signal adjustability (not necessary) are under 10
Easy to hook up too.... lets say you want to run an amp and sub off a stock system.
Tap the rear speaker wires and mate the input wires of the converter to these tap points. Then run your RCA cables from that to your amp.
(Don't forget to keep signal and power runs on opposite sides of the vehicle, otherwise you're likely to get a little of induced noise.)
These units are prone to noise anyways, and often times you may hear turn-on/turn-off thumps, as the signal voltage thru the converter are discharged.
Not anything that would harm your equipment, just a little annoying sometimes. Getting the switched power for the remote turn on would come from either the remote factory turn on wire from the deck or from the power antenna output.... unfortunately using the power antenna output (in some vehicles) means that that wire is no longer hot when any other source other than the radio is on. So in this case, a switch would have to be installed, or you would have to tap the accessory circuit from the ignition. (the ignition lead on the back of the deck could work as well - it draws from the same circuit.)
