    I have never seen or heard of one breaking you should be fine long as your not rock bouncing it then you would break ring and pinons carriers and axle shafts lol.. Aussie is a good one, Spartan and lock right are good too just make sure they send you a hardened center pin..sounds like who you talked too was trying to sell you a 1000.00 air locker. They will wear out eventually but takes awhile you may have to replace the springs if it starts acting up not unlocking while in 2wd and turning for example,but there worth the money for light wheelin' under a 33 inch tire 35s and up you will want to upgrade axle shafts in the d30 as the will snap under hard load.
