I have had a couple of questions about the idler pulley and belt routing etc on several forums on this set up. I have never been really happy with the idler I used, but couldn't find one small enough to fit in the place I needed it.

That is until I was working on my Subaru and noticed a really slick idler pulley sitting on the parts counter. Doh, why didn't I remember this. All the Subarus have at least two high quality idlers on them. I have been in them enough I should have remembered. So I went down to the local pick and pull and 7 later I had a nice idler. Here it is beside the old plastic one.

These are about 2" across. The old one worked fine, except it whined like a supercharger and was quite loud. So, I wanted to update it. Glad I did. It cut the cabin noise considerably. Here is a view of the bracket and where the idler attaches. That is aluminum, no apologies for red mud stains on it. This is a Jeep after all.

You can see where I added to it on the left. The idler in place.
