I dont get much time to get up to the mountains, seems like once a year. Well I,m going camping June 10th 11th and returning home on the 12th. I am going to stay at Low Gap Creek in Helen:

    CAMPGROUND NAME: Low Gap Creek

    VISIT DATE: 04/04/2000

    UPDATE DATE: 11/8/2009

    STATE: Georgia

    REGION: Southern

    RANGER DISTRICT: Chattooga River

    NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Helen

    RESERVATIONS: No

    DIRECTIONS:
From Helen, GA, take State Rt. 17/75 north 0.8 miles to State Rt. 75 Alt.
Turn left onto Rt. 75 Alt and then turn right almost immediately onto Poplar
Stump Rd. Go 4.3 miles to campground.

NOTE: Poplar Stump Rd. changes to gravel in 1.6 miles and becomes River
Rd. (Forest Rt. 44) in 2.2 miles. At this point, the road continues as gravel
and becomes single-lane, rough and winding.

    GENERAL COMMENTS:
    The elevation is 1,800 ft.

The campground, located adjacent to Low Gap Creek, is comprised of White
pine, rhododendron and Mountain Laurel. The creek bisects the campground
    - accessing sites 8 through 13 requires fording the creek and driving over a
low water bridge. The campground is a favorite location for anglers fishing
the Low Gap Creek. Each campsite has a lantern post.

Tentative plans are June 1st and 2nd camping and trail ride. I do this every year in June this will be the 3rd year. Not sure on the camp area yet do to everything being closed. We usually camp at Wildcat creek, as time gets closer I will post were we will be camping. We (my cousin and I) trout fish on Friday and ride most of the day on sat, and leave on Sunday morning. We will ride some of the following: Hightower , Bell mt. Trey mt., River Road 44,maybe even War Woman area. Of course we will be open to any other areas too. Here is the camping areas I would like to stay, we tried this one last year and it was closed due to the tornado that went through:

    CAMPGROUND NAME: Upper Chattahoochee River

    VISIT DATE: 05/12/1997

    UPDATE DATE: 11/8/2009

    STATE: Georgia

    REGION: Southern

    RANGER DISTRICT: Chattooga River

    NEAREST CITY/TOWN: Helen

    RESERVATIONS: No

    DIRECTIONS:
From Helen, GA, take State Rt. 17/75 north for 8.6 miles to Upper
Chattahoochee River sign (River Road 44 - Mark Trail Wilderness).
Turn left onto River Road 44 and go 4.6 miles to campground.

NOTE: River Road 44 is gravel, single lane with turnouts. It is
also steep in places with some switchbacks.

    GENERAL COMMENTS:
    The elevation is 2,260 ft.

The campground is very picturesque and is situated along Upper
Chattahoochee River in tall, mature mixed woods. Excellent
campground for relaxing, fishing, enjoying the scenery and
visiting Helen. There is also dispersed camping along River
Road 44 all the way down to Helen.

The German alpine-designed village of Helen is a neat place to
visit, walk around, shop and eat. The town was a classic example
of a failing "Small-Town USA." In the early 1970s, some town
business people got together and came up with the idea of
redeveloping Helen as a Bavarian village. This was accomplished
with surprising authenticity. The town seems to be prospering
now with many tourists enjoying this quaint "Bavarian village."

When visiting Helen, suggest continuing down River Road 44 to
the town (rather then going back up to State Rt. 17/75). The drive
meanders alongside and over the river and is very scenic. This is
especially true when the rhododendrons are blooming in June.

This is bear country; practice safe food storage techniques.
