That black rubber seal over the crank bearing caps is supposed to be removed and replaced. Most gaskets should have this. Most have a little tab that fits into a notch on the cork so they will seal around each other.

Yep, Thanks for the reply. First time inside an oil pan. The way it was stuck in the bearing cap groove I just figured it was part of the engine. That’s why that gasket never sealed. On the plus side, I’m getting really good at dropping the oil pan. Thanks again
