Hey folks, I want to buy gutter mounts and welcome opinions. From pics I've seen smitybuilt look ok and I like the 90degree angle of them, seems it would take the weight better, suggestions?
I can weld, cut and burn but don't have a pipe bender so I'm thinking of going with square stock with mitred corners. Main purpose is to haul 1 kayak down the road at 65 MPH and at times two from the house to the water(short distance/low speed . I fit my 30 inch spare tire on the factory donut mount but I'm thinking I should build it strong enough for a spare in case I ever go with bigger tires, other wise just needs to hold cargo (tent, gear bags etc). Will 3/4 inch heavy wall square stock work? To light., to heavy? The sides need to be 4 to6 inches high and I can add gussets and bracing as needed. Stuff I build generally weighs twice as much as it needs to and I'd like to avoid over weight/ overbuilt on this project but not have a catostrophic failure.
Any thoughts?
Any engineers.
Thanks
Bryan
