    Default Locker questions

Hey guys there are alot of locker forums but I can't find what I need help with so my brother doesn't have a xj it's a wj but that's besides the point. He bought the Jeep with an auto locker in the front. It was fine for a long time now when he goes around left handed turns the locker slips and jerks the Jeep all over. Only on left turns tho right turns it has never done it. If anyone can give some insight on what's going on it would be much appreciated.

I was thinking maybe one hub is staying locked in and its making it do that but I'm not really sure.

One of the hub's right? And I'm not sure he bought the Jeep with it in there.

It is not the hubs. You really don't have a classic hub.

So what would be locking up. It has to have hubs to lock it into 4wd and they aren't manual lock hubs

You have unit bearings, not hubs. They are like a hub and bearing combined. What is happening is the ratchet in the locker is locking and letting go. Are you using full time 4WD?

No it happens in 2wd. So is it the locker that's not functioning properly?

In 2wd the locker shouldn't be doing anything, so long as it is operating correctly!! Had a local XJ owner with similar issue.. he thought it was a steering issue or something else, so he replaced the steering gearbox (upgraded to Durango box)... and it helped some, but was still having the same issue, except for his seemed to be locking up in either turn direction... Told him to me it seemed like a locker issue, which he was told by the PO that it had no locker... after he tore the diff cover off, he found out that he had what is called a Volvo locker (apparently out of a few different model Volvo's that have a 8.25 differential).. come to find out it was busted, and so it we locking up whenever it wanted.. so I would think with that one having an auto locker, I'd say pull the diff cover off it, take a look at it and see if you might be able to see any kind of writing or symbol that might help identify what kind it is, to see if there is anything that might look out of place right away... Almost wondering if the springs inside of it, might not be missing or just worn out... fairly easy to get the parts and swap them out..

That's what I was thinking last night I told my brother to just take the diff cover off see if anything looks out of place. It's just weird it only does it one way. Like when he turns right you can hear it ratcheting but left turn it starts to then stops and the pops and let's loose feels like it's gonna rip you off the road. He doesn't really go offroading much so he's saying he gonna take the locker out. I told him to see if something like a spring was missing or worn out like you said. Thanks for the help tho. Much appreciated.

Jack up the front end. Rotate the front tires separately and together and see if you can nail down which side is locking up when it shouldnt. May have one side of it worn and not ratcheting properly.

Id also grab JY spiders to swap in until you get it sorted out. Or you can pull axle shafts to drive it until you get it fixed
