    Default Removing gas from tank

I need to replace the fuel pump on my 97 XJ 4.0, but of course just filled the tank before it stopped working...what is the easiest way to get the gas out to drop the tank? a regular syphone hose wont work would one of those small diameter pumps get passed the spring thing inside the filler hose?

have you tried pressurizing the tank? Not sure if the pump is positive displacement or not. can fuel get past the pump if its not running....

if so, unhook the fuel line, add pressure through the filler neck and it should all come out.

I have not tried pressurizing the tank...I havn't done anything yet I just know I will have to deal with the fuel in the tank before I deal with the pump...I have heard fuel will not go past the pump when not running, but not sure on that...

then you could stick a random hose in the tank. like 1/2" or so. then pressurize it with air

I've seen it done by using a length of small diameter hose into the tank and then use another short piece of hose and a rag to seal around the edges to blow into the tank to pressurize it and force it out of the longer small diameter hose. Once it starts going, it's good until empty. I'll try to find a video.

I can't get my computer to cooperate right now but google "BleepinJeep 4 siphon techniques". If I remember correctly the last one in the video is the one I'm thinking of.

When I read the title to this thread I thought "just drive it", mine gets such horrible gas mileage it doesn't take long.

Siphoning is about the only method I know. Problem is, getting by the little anti-siphon flap in the filler neck. Pressuring the tank may work you just have to be careful not to blow the tank up. I little pressure goes a long way when your dealing with the volume of a large vessel like a fuel tank.

Thanks guy's...I will give it a shot, sounds like pressurizing the tank will be my best bet.
