    Default Starting blower?

Another dumb newbie question. Is there a blower that runs for a short while after an XJ starts up? It sounds like two things running for a short time and then one ceases after a little time.

Not a dumb question. The answer is yes. It is the radiator efan

The supplemental fan? The main fan is on all the time, but what I'm hearing turns itself off after a minute, or at least quiets down enough to sound off.

Pop the hood next time and see if it is the efan that is making the noise.

Efan shouldn't come on at all when you start it unless your engine temp is at 210 or higher. And the efan is louder then a blower motor sound. If the efan is kicking on you need to replace your temp sensor on the tstat housing.

I still need to start it up from cold, while watching it, and maybe record it.

The best way I can describe it is like the sound of two fans/blowers running until I get up to the top of our street, about 200 yards. Once I get that far, one of those sounds dies off and all is as it should be.

Nope. Not really been cold enough here for that yet.

Today I started the Jeep without the usual tap of the gas pedal. The volt gauge showed 0, and the wheel felt odd to turn. Additionally, the extra blowing sounds from the original post where there. Once I gassed it up and headed up the hill, the blowing sounds finished, the volts came up to the normal 14 reading, and the vehicle was fine.

It's been running great actually, on the whole. I did change the sepentine belt recently, and it is appropriately tight.

So now I need to figure out if the alternator is bad, or the belt is slipping.
