Default Gas smell, and it wasn't the dog

I have recently noticed a raw gasoline smell when first running my 2000 xj. It seems to disapate slightly after warm up but never goes away. Driving with windows down only causes a draw from vents and makes it worse. I took a look at my fuel line up to fuel bar and no leaks. Stumped and throwing this out there. Help me Roy, Big Jim!

IIRC there is a vent line that comes forward to the engine compartment. It is probably loose or broken. You can follow it forward from the tank. Another possibility is a leak at the fuel rail

once I had a similar issue for almost an year. Dropped skidplate and it was pinhole on bottom of tank. Dropped tank, tilted, dried and used 2 part epoxy glue as sealant. So far, so good.
