Ihave not look at one when I pulled them but I there is a good chance they are a melling,I have never had a pump go out on me they are pretty reliable if you keep the oil clean. You watch mine will...

Melling,ac clevite are good brands,they are easy to change once the oil pan is off.
Are you sure the oil pump is bad?

That is what I did,got one from a V8 zj along with the tierod which is much beefier than the xj,however I had no ill handling issues,got it because it is an upgrade.

Use a small wooden dowel,if you scratch the crankshaft you will have even bigger issues.

You forgot the upper part correct,because on my 89 the lower part can go on anytime,the top one acts as a shim for the starter also.
