I'm working on re-sealing my snorkel that's coming out of the cowl. I need something that can be sprayed around the 3" pvc that will foam up and seal all cracks to prevent leaks again. It has to be durable and long lasting and also endure exposure to the elements.
Anyone know of any kind of sealant I can use?
I don't know of anything that will foam, I use Marine Goop. It seals great and is weatherproof. It comes in a squeeze tube, don't know if it would help for you or not.
Chris, I think I would use two products. First, polyurethane foam. It will expand and then fill the entire thing. Then trim it back to where you want and then use butyl rubber caulk, which remains flexible over that to seal it.
Maybe you need a rubber gasket that fits the pipe. I recently had to climb up on the roof to seal a rubber gasket that goes between the roof and one of those sewer exhaust pipes that stick out. It wasn't installed correctly and it was letting raid water run down the pipe into the house.
I'd look at one of those seals.
What a pool noodle wont do the job....dang thought they could be used everywhere!! :)

I used to have two rubber hoses wrapped around the hole in the cowl to fit the pvc nice and snug. The pvc was not attached to anything which caused it to move around when I removed the cap to put the winter cover on it. It eventually worked it's way loose and the seal failed causing water to go down the outside of the pvc and leak right into the cabin intake that's inside the cowl, right below the pvc fitting. You can see the cowl intake hole in the first picture. It's the hole inside the hole I cut on the outside.
Sooo after getting a few recommendations, I decided to use Great Stuff foam sealer and silicone sealant. I also made 3 "L" brackets to attach the pvc to the cowl to support it this time. I filled the gaps with the great stuff which exploded all over. Once that dried I cut it down so it was inside around the snorkel and filling the gap and enough to be a bonding surface for the silicone. I put two layers of silicone sealant on it, smoothed it out, and everything came out perfect. I can now grab the snorkel and shake the entire jeep with it. It's not going anywhere this time. :) The best part is you can't even see the three brackets I used to support the snorkel.
It was too dark to take finished pix of it but I'll get some up tomorrow.
I have the same set up without the thing coming up thru.....never a water issue.
