Clack Clack Clack
I am back for more troubleshooting. Since my last post I have changed my tres and upgraded to zj v8 tie rods thanks to info on here, I have diagnosed some idle issues and seemed to have solved them by cleaning my tb and iac, again thanks to stuff i found searching. But, I have an issue I can't find from searching!
My issue is, a "clack clack clack" sound coming from the front end when I accelerate and when I slow down. The clacking sound accompanies the movement of the vehicle. As in, it starts slow as a speed up then the clacking gets faster until I can't really hear it anymore or its just a blur of clacks. Then as I slow down to a stop the same thing in reverse. Clack clack clack, so annoying.
I am new to solid axles, and I know a lot needs done on my d30 anyways. My diff is weeping and the pinion seal is gone, but I already have the seal and will service my diff next time I'm in the garage. What other maintenance should I attack first that might stop this awful clacking?
Thanks in advance, I know someone here will have some experience I can learn from.

Re: Clack Clack Clack
Yup, take a peek at those axle U joints, they work your way up to the transfer case

Does the noise change while turning?

Re: Clack Clack Clack
It's not the driveshaft, as I pulled that off and i still get the noise driving without the ds. Will put it back on when I get things serviced and taken care of on the front axle.
I was kind of thinking axle ujoints, but when I jack it up and tug at the front wheels, there really isn't any play at all, though the whole hub assembly does look pretty rusty.
I get a clunk when turning sometimes that is louder than the clacking, but similar. Usually happens on really tight turns, thought it might be just cause I need an alignment done.
Thanks for the video, will give those a watch.

Re: Clack Clack Clack
Sounds like a front axle CV joint. My drivers side sounded like that and the one on the passenger side had a ripped boot and slung all the grease out. Replaced both for around 130.00

Sorry thought you had a Grand. But that was the sound my CV joint made.

Re: Clack Clack Clack
I hate to ask this, but there isn't a rock in your tire tread, is there?
Also check your calipers and make sure they're tight

Re: Clack Clack Clack
Glad its not cv's, I am so sick of cv's from my other rig (an isuzu).
One of the reasons I got the XJ was to be free of them.
Also, not crazy to ask about rocks Brass, my first instinct was to look at that and make sure no lug nuts were loose, but the sound is pretty metallic sounding, so no such luck. Calipers could be loose I guess, but weren't after I changed the pads. I will check when I have the wheels off again.

Re: Clack Clack Clack
That's what i was getting at. If the noise changes while turning it narrows it down a bit. U-joints and hub assemblies.

Re: Clack Clack Clack
Front wheel bearing or front axle u joints ,(my uneducated guess) pulling on the tire wont always tell ya if there bad , need to look at them and the caps for wear. I would highly recommend running it up in the air so you can get under it and pinpoint the issue before you spend a lot shot gunning it.
