Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
In an effort to compile larger threads that include similar information. What are some goodies that XJ owners can pick up at the junk yard aside from replacement parts? I know I'm looking for new front and rear ends. What make, models and years should I be looking at? While looking for these what other goodies are out there for those who look? Please feel free to use this thread for any other items that can be found and used in the Jeep builders place of solace.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
i know steering box off of a dakota will fit and a grand cherokee alternator will give you more amps
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Any Saginaw three or four bolt right hand of the frame steering box will fit the XJ. There is one out of a V8 Dakota that has a larger piston in it and is an upgrade. There are a number of electric fans, some from a Taurus that work well. Ford 8.8" rear ends out of Rangers work well as an upgrade. Brackets off the YJ 4.0 work well to move the alternator up out of the mud. ZJ disc brakes bolt on.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Many newer XJs have the 29 spline 8.25 Chryco rear axles. In fact if you don't mind a little fabbing you can use one from a Libby and you get rear discs too.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Disc brakes from a Dana 35 Grand Cherokee to upgrade your Chrysler 8.25 to disc brakes.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Let's not forget those S10 rear springs
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Ok I need clued in on these S-10 spings? Im getting ready to buy another XJ and need to know what kinda options the S-10 leaves will give me!! Thanks for any info.
I know that you can source a Dana 44 out of an isuzu amigo/trooper,and they have factory disc brakes,4.56 gears, and coil springs if you want to get flexy. The down fall is you have to change wheels to 6 lugs. But thats ok because if you find a front Dana 44 waggy axle it will be 6 lug also..
Maybe a 97+ exhaust manifold..supposed to be less prone to cracking.Good swap for the older cracked manifolds.
Or grab the whole engine as the 96+ is supposed to have a better head on it.
Rubicon edtion TJ's have a factory Dana 44 in the front and rear.
Or how bout the 4 cylinders XJ's had 4:10 gears. Some of the High Pinion 35's had bigger u-joints...drawing a blank on which years..
Chevrolet Vortec v-6/v-8's make good swaps...
How bout swapping seats..I remember my 89' had so wierd rocking style seats..didnt dig those at all. My 99' has some nice seats...
Or how bout swapping steering wheels..ditching the new air bag wheel for an older model..i say this for the trail only rigs..dont want to get flamed for taking away safty stuff..just would hate to had another bag blow up in my face...still have a scar from that..
How bout wheels..I know you may never find bead locks but ranger, mustangs, crown vics, some dodge trucks(early years), dodge rwd cars, toyota 2wd trucks all share the 5x4.5..or 5x114.3 metric bolt pattern..may be able to find some cool wheels..
same goes for the 6 lus..toyota,99 up chevy 1/2 ton trucks(both 2+4wd) chevy trucks from as far back as 47' to present 2+4wd trucks had them until 73 then only the 4wd had 6 lug till 99 to present, Jeep 1/2 tons, all nissan trucks, Mazda trucks till 94', isuzu trucks till they thought they were S-10's.
I think thats all I have for now..

Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Look for the early S10 heavy duty rear spring. You can get 3-4" by substituting the bottom three leaves with the XJ main leaf. Cut the eyes off the S10 main and use it for 5-6" lift.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Nice! what do I look for? You say heavy duty do you look for big arch?
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Three arched leaves and one flat
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Ok. So look for any S-10 that has the 3 main leaves and the over load, so a total of 4 springs. Just wanting to make sure I get the right ones! Thanks again!!
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Ford Bronco II wheels will fit also. My directional mags are off an 86 Bronco II.

Yeah I know they are pointed in different directions. Put best 2 tires on the front before we noticed the wheels.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Those are called blades. I have a set off a Toyota also.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
Hood vents are always a good find. I have LeBaron vents but there are others that will work as well.
Re: Who loves the junk yard? But what can we get there?
I've heard that you can pull the shroud with 2 fans from a 1995-1997 Ford Contour or Mercury Mystique that can be trimmed to fit the XJ radiator. The articles I've read are from dudes who zip tie them on.
How about more suspension stuff. MJ shackles, ZJ parts...?
