Turbos
I know there are a few out there for the 4.0L
Was wondering why people tend to skip this option and go for a V8 swap. Any solid reasoning behind skipping a turbo option for a V8? Cost, difficulty of building up the 4.0L for a swap, ect?
As much as I like the sound of a V8, I have to say I love the sound of a turbo spooling even more.

Re: Turbos
I think a supercharger is better on a 4.0L over a turbo, if using as a rock crawler kinda rig.

Re: Turbos
Isn't the price difference pretty steep on them.

Re: Turbos
Well, I would suppose that there's a couple reasons. You can drop the same amount of money on a turbo/supercharger as a v8 swap, but the typical v8 motors that people swap in are lighter than the 4.0. Personally, even if done right, superchargers and turbos can cause a lot of wear on a motor, and I'd rather go with a v8 in that case too.

Re: Turbos
that's a really good point. LS1 does weigh in a little over a 100lbs less. that definitely makes a difference.
still comes in weighing less than the 4bt swap i have in the back of my mind. might actually be able to swap an LS1 and then haul an extra LS1 around in the back for parts at the same weight as the 4bt.

Re: Turbos
Plus turbo's have to spool up to make power, most of our crawling and climbing is done at lower rpm's. It's much better to be able to produce torque in the lower rpm range with more cylinders.

Re: Turbos
After Turboing a Dodge neon I kicked the idea on doing the same to a XJ. It's doable but low boost only since you have no room for a intercooler. And if you work the formula's right you can be boosing at 1300 rpm

Re: Turbos
Looks like you don't have to wait too long for it to spool up though. I like that torque increase at 1800rpm.

Re: Turbos
I had thought about the turboing the XJ when i still had my 98.. Looked online and have seen a few people that have done their own setup, both turbo and supercharged.. But they are all DD and I remember seeing one that removed it and just rebuilt the engine for better HP/Tq. after he tried wheeling it with the turbo and as said above didn't get any real power out of it for the wheeling aspect, only on the road...

Re: Turbos
Personally I would just go the supercharger route. There's several kits out there that are a bolt on affair.
