View Full Version : Gear ratio check?

I would like to check the front and rear axle ratios on my little '92 project before it hits the trails. This particular Jeep has had some very questionable stuff done to it. I figured best to check before blowing up the transfer case.

Does the "one spin of the tire and count drive shaft rotation" apply to both open and limited slip differentials?

Does it matter what position the transfer case is in (2wd-4wd)?

It is one spin of the driveshaft. If you have an open, leave one wheel on the ground and count two tire revolutions and divide by two. If a locker, jack both up and count tire revolutions.

This is what I got today when I checked it again.

Front axel) 1 tire on the ground, 2 rotations of the tire is 4 on the drive shaft.
Rear axel) both tires off ground, 1 rotation 4 turns of the drive shaft) both rear wheels spin in same direction.

Just for giggles I left one front wheel on the ground put the transfer case in 4hi. I turned the rear wheel 1/2 turn and got a 1 full turn of the front.

This whole thing is starting to give me a headache......:bang:

Congrats. You have 4.10s in both ends

Thanks for the info! The difference between the open and limited diff really had me scratching my head. I thought for sure the PO had screwed up yet another part of this little Jeep.

most of the "lucky" folks got 3:73 gears which is a step DOWN from what you have...awesome score on that one!

I guess it kind of makes up for some of the other "issues" that came with it....
