I was looking at a buddy's land cruiser and I have to admit, I'm a bit envious of his tailgate that drops down to sit on. Then I had a thought. "Why can't I fab up some kind of tailgate that drops down after the lift gate is opened?".

Its just a thought in its infancy right now, but I thought I'd see what the rest of the XJ community has come up with.

Something like this? His isn't hinged though, you have to lift if in and out.. but still nice and much easier to make than a hinged tailgate.

Read the whole build... pretty nice rig. I also like his hoist in the attic.

If yoiur handy, you have the right vintage of XJ to do that. All you need is a spare tail gate, one to make the bottom with and one for the top. Get yourself some pickup latches to incorporate into it and you have it all done except weatherization.

I love this guys rig... Would love to learn how to do a 1/4 of the stuff he did, much less the full build... And I really like the attic hoist... I just read through his complete 15 pg thread..

Yeah, he even straightened it out after he rolled it. One thing I would do differently than he did is utilize a pickup tailgate latch instead of fabbing one from scratch.

Hey I guess if you got the knowledge.. you might as well fab it!! I don't like the camper shell looking latch on the top hatch.. but other than that.. it is a pretty cool rig!!
