Ok so I am doing a motor swap on my XJ and the old motor was already out of it when I go it. However I have no bellhousing bolts or motor mount bolts. I know where I can get them I just don't know what size and I need. I'm pretty sure they are metric. So Please If any one knows I really need to know because my truck has a blown head gasket and I need to get it off the road and the jeep on the road so I can rebuild the truck motor. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't help you with the bolt size, but something you might want to do in the time it takes to install an engine is go to a NAPA store. They have some head gasket sealer that I am told by people I know and trust that it works. It has a $60 price tag on it, but the farmers here use it and swear by it. Then you won't be under so much pressure.

On the bolt size, you can get some cheap plastic calipers or even a good Craftsman adjustable wrench and measure the outside of the threads in the hole. The wrenches are machined not cast like the old ones and are marked in inches on one side and millimeters on the others. I use them all the times to measure bolts. They work well for that and don't spread under pressure.

I am still looking for the different fastener sizes/ specifications which are used on the Jeep Cherokee (it's looking like I may have to just tear my heap down and take the measurements and then put it all back together) but in the mean time these links may get you enough information that you can measure your old fasteners and then get the same or up grade to better ones. Sorry that I don't have specific sizes and spec's yet but when I get them all done I will be posting the info in the Technical area. Until then, I hope the information on these links is of some help.

Well to the junkyard I go to pull all of the bolts I need out of a 4.0 grand. Yay for wallering around in the mud.

I was just about to say it would be a bit of a PITA, but you can hit up the JY.. I have had to do that a few times working on folks vehicles when there is bolts or parts missing...

Or check craigslist for someone parting out an XJ. Odds are they will be selling the engine or trans. Id offer them a six pack of beer for the bolts.

Do grands have aw4's in them

yes... the easiest way to tell is the motor will be a 4.0 and the AW4 will be mated to a NP242 transfercase... and about 3/4 of the ZJ's out there that ARE 4x4 have the 242 t-case another easy way is look at the shifter the 242 shifter will have this order

but an easier note... those bolts should be the same no matter which transmission it came fromremember they almost ALL bolt from the transmission to the motor meaning that all but I think two or three thread into the 4.0 NOT the transmission, but make sure you DO get the starter bolts since those might be a different size

well if you CAN Id just grab ONE and take that sucker to the home depot and match up the rest! that way your not laying in the mud in whats most likely going to be a factory height ZJ... not very high at all!check with MSMoorenburg or bigjim350 but im pretty sure that all the bolts are same length with the exception of the starter ones!

are those guys just like the guru's or something? I was told that they would probably be different lengths and that the top two would be different for sure. Motor mount bolts aren't exactly rocket science, just get something long enough that fits through the holes.

those two have done more motor and transmissions than you or I have brushed our teeth LOL

Alright I will have to talk to one of them. Hopefully one of them is on so I can find out rather quickly. If they are all the same size I could probably go pull what I need on my lunch break tomorrow and then go stop at lowes and pick up the bolts I need. Still need to find an exhaust manifold though. Saw one on amazon for like 90 bucks free shipping with gasket. Doesn't sound bad to me

I just found this today

http://www.geocities.com/JeepI6Power/screws.html

doesn't look like he's listed what you need, but you ought to submit to him when you find out the correct specs.

Be careful buying stuff at lowe's, you need Grade 5 or 8 hardware if SAE and 8.8 or 10.9 if metric (higher numbers = higher strength, always use the same grade as original if you can, higher if you can't) some of the stuff in bins is Grade 2 and is not acceptable anywhere on a vehicle.

good luck!
