Can any one tell me what trans and rear axle came in a 96 from the factory? I just talked to the guy I got mine from today and he was telling me that it has a dana 35 in the rear. I was under the impression that a 96 came with a 8.25 29 spline. So I assume either someone replaced it and didn't know what they were doing or this guy has no idea what he is talking about. I'm sure some one here knows, so help me out guys.

I believe 97 was the change over year. 97+ was either a C8.25 or Dana 35. If you had anti-lock brakes it was a Dana 35.

Seems like 96 they used parts either from 96 or 97, depending on when it was put together. 96's can have a mix of those year's parts.

They could have had either if it did not have ABS, only the Dana 35 if it had ABS.
As far as trans, if it's auto then it is the AW4 if it is manual it is the AX15.

Have you crawled under there and looked at it?? That would be step 1 for me.

Is it an automatic? AW4

5 speed? AX15

Is there something wrong with it? Why do you think they didn't know what they were doing?

Just contact Jeep and get a build sheet. That will tell you what it left the factory with.

More information here... :link: (http://www.xjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=493)

if the bottom of the "pumkin" on the axle looks rounded then it's a dana 35.
if it is shaped like a stop sign then it's the 8.25

lol no help at all!

1991–1996: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts.
Late 1996–2001: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 29-spline axleshafts.

So basically it depends on when your 1996 was built.

Have you tried requesting the build sheet yet?

Hmmm so we still have no idea about the C8.25 spline count.

1984–1996: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 27-spline axleshafts (1989 – 1995 : with ABS used 5-297x universal joints, non-ABS had 5-260x universal joints. Certain XJ models were produced with constant-velocity joints instead of universal joints.)
1996–1999: Dana 30, High Pinion, Reverse Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.
2000–2001: Dana 30, Low Pinion, Standard Cut, 297x/760 universal joint, 27-spline axleshafts.
1985–2001: Straight non-driven front axle for two-wheel drive only.

[edit] Rear Axle

1984–1989: Dana 35, non c-clip, with anti-lock braking system (ABS) or non-ABS.
1990–1996: Dana 35, c-clip, ABS or non-ABS.
1997–2001: Dana 35, c-clip, ABS.
1991–1996: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 27-spline axleshafts.
Late 1996–2001: Chrysler 8.25", c-clip, non-ABS, 29-spline axleshafts.
1987–1990: Dana 44, non-abs, 30-spline axleshafts.

[edit] Axle Gear Ratios

Jeep XJs came in several standard gearing ratios:

3.07:1, manual transmission, I6 engine.
3.54:1, automatic transmission, I6 engine with Dana 44 rear differential.
3.54:1, manual transmission, I4 diesel engine with Dana 35 rear differential.
3.55:1, automatic transmission, I6, V6 engines; manual transmission, I4 engine.

isnt there a tag on the axle? it should tell you the gear ratio & spline count? unless someone didnt put it back on after a service. that happens.

It was actually really easy. A good battery powered drill with a phillips bit will get you most of the way. Rear seat belts are like T40 or T50 torx that was the hardest thing for me was finding one of those. Luckily my dad had one. The "Oh Shit!" handles take a T25 torx. 15 screws hold all of the trim panels on that need removed the one by the dash on the DR side is a SOB to get with a drill so grab a screwdriver just for that one. After you get your trim loose and out of the way just find another set of hands so you don't break it pulling it out. I thought I had fixed my sweating problem by taking the headliner out and drying it. :bang: Not so much. It's not as bad as it was but still sweating, so I will be pulling the carpet next. Any one with any info please feel free to leave it. Do they seats and console have to come out?

UHCOSTUH
01-20-2012, 01:14 AM
oh and do be gentle with it, they are very easily broken. also grab a smaller flat screwdriver to remove the dome light and don't forget about the visors. I almost did.:D
