OK, I have searched and didn't find an answer. So, I will ask here: I assumed, being a relatively modern (1991, revised in 1996) engine that the 4.0 HO has a roller camshaft. Err...does it? Mine is a 1997.

wow this is a good question. i know that the "V" motors went to roolers in the HO editions. but to the best of my knowledge ( & i have been way wrong before) the jeep straight 6 didnt. however i have heard that the 97 had a different crank than the rest.

they don't come with a roller set up but you can get it. course then you need the roller lifters, shorter push rods, locking nuts for the lifters, girdle for the same.

They did come out with one with roller but it didn't work out and they stopped making it. I read it was becouse the cherokee was a low cost 4x4 and it rased the price abov the target price.

UPDATE! Quaker State has a new oil out, with extra ZDDP for older engines, called QS Defy.

The design of the 4.0 dates back to about 1965 when the first AMC I6 was introduced, so in engine terms it's a dinosaur and it has a hydraulic flat-tappet camshaft. You can convert the 4.0 block to run any one of the range of hydraulic roller camshafts from 505 Performance but it'll cost you over $1000.

http://www.shop.505performance.com/category.sc?categoryId=31

Their kits have everything you need including the cam itself, roller lifters, link bars, chromemoly pushrods, timing set, and valve springs with retainers and keepers.

This was the best I could find, meaning anything. I'll have to look into the WalMart stuff.

Got an oil analysis back from Blackstone Labs on the Defy...I'm sold. Direct quote: "Some of the best wear numbers we have ever seen from a Jeep 4 litre."
