I found a set of fairly new 39.5x18 Super Swamper Boggers with rims at a pawn shop for 1500. So I put down the money to hold them. Now does anyone know what size lift I need on the Cherokee to clear them?

I was looking at Rusty's 8" long arm or the Rough Country 6.5 long arm.

I have narrowed my lift choices down to 2. Rusty's and Iron Rock.
Anyone with reviews on either?

Iron Rock

A buddy and I put in an Iron Rock kit on his WJ and it was pretty beefy. He's been running it for about 2 years now without any issues.

I don't think your axles will last very long on those tires.

Yeah I was going to say you probably need something beefier than a D44 up front, and a bigger steering box. Maybe a D44 with chrome molly axles. I'm just going by what I've read. Lord knows I've thought about bigger tires, and it just seemed like I was going to have to rebuild the entire Jeep to do it. :sign0181:

I am looking at a set of Dana 60s cut down to 66" and doing the Durango steering box upgrade.

I have the equivalent of a 5-6" lift. I used waggy leafs up front. I clear 38.5/14.5 TSL SX with very little rubbing. I had to cut out most of my fenders but that was also due to stretching my wheel base 13". Just be prepared to do some cutting and go with as little back spacing as possible on the wheels.

I would also suggest gearing it low. Somewhere between 5.13 and 5.89 would be fine.

If you are going for heavier axles, then go for it. 8" of lift is what you will need for those tires for sure.

i have got 2 projects going now both xj's...the 1 we just had to tear apart & start over... we used the rusty's 8"LA lift & cut the fenders alot to fit the 40's. we blew a ford 9" rear with those tires...scrapped that for a pair of dana 60's shortened to 61" wms to wms disc rear's. they held but the LA lift didnt. going to have to leaf the front. not too mention this thing got us into a good amount of lecturing by the the florida dot cops. told me i would have to build lower bumpers or tow it .

If you still want to stick with a linked front here is one that is heavy duty.

The 60s I was looking at fell thru. After hours and hours of research, reading and talking to my fab guy, I am wondering if a set of 40s with Chrom molly shafts will work? Experts chime in here!

You can do it with the 9" Ford rear and D 44 up front out of a Ford pickup. Nice matched set. With the rear, which will be the most critical, I would suggest at least cryo treating the axles. This will give you 40% more strength and put you in the ball park with D60 35 spline axles. Another option here if you want to spend money is ARBs set up for 35 spline axles and the shafts to with it. Can't go wrong there especially with cryo treating them. Up front you can get bigger inners if you want, but the way to go is with the RCV axles which will be as strong or stronger than D60 front axles. The D44 is much easier to make fit than the 60 due to the size of the pumpkin. If I was doing it, that is the way I would go. I would not want to do 60s unless it was a dedicated rock rig.
