What's the procedure for removing an alternator from a 98 XJ?

I know it's out there, but I'm too lazy to look. Does the bracket have to come off the block?

on the 99 which I imagine may be the same
1. disconnect battery
2. remove belt
3. maybe remove battery for more room to play
4. remove wires going into alternator
5. remove bolts going into alternator, look at new one to figure out where they may be
6. remove alternator
7. open beer and look at a job well done

looked at mine looks like bracket can stay on there

Thanks, I think I have a bad alternator along with a bad battery (atleast that's under warranty). Thinking I might as well take the alternator from the parts jeep and have it tested.

When I went to UTI we spent 2 days learning how to test and rebuild alternators and starters, wish the parts store sold those kits...

I hear ya. Denso makes a 170a alternator that is a direct fit for an XJ. I'd love to get mine rebuilt with those parts. But they are nearly $500.

Not 100% but I think the 98 Grand Cherokee came with a 140a

Any clue what vehicle that alternator you speak of comes in?

I couldn't find it listed for a 98 Cherokee, but could for a 97 SE. Me thinks this is for police jeeps.

Loosen the belt,by loosening the powersteering pump adjuster
remove the battery to be able to reach the bolt
remove the bolt nut and remove the alt from the bracker
remove the wires and reverse order for installation.

the Alt you should have is probably the 136 amp model but if you can afford it that 170 would be sweet to have for any future light or stereo plans you might have.

Alternator was a 2 minute removal in the parts Jeep. 15mm socket, 15mm socket or wrench, 10mm socket, and a 7mm socket.

Ofcourse the belt was off, the grill, ac condensor, radiator, battery, battery tray, bumper and compressor had already been removed.

FYI, the alternator was so bad, that it blew the circuit breaker that the tester was on at the parts store.

Ok, my voltage is still dropping, so I think it's time for an alternator. I was shopping around and found this. 136 amp alternator for $87.16 + $5.49 in shipping.

Part number is MPA 13746. O'Reilly's has this same alternator for $142.
