What rear end is this?

Hey everyone,

I've gone back and forth with the sticky on rear ends, and am having a hard time deciding which one this is.

I figured I'd check with you more experienced folk for a more solid answer. I THINK (and hope) it's the 8.25 and not the 35. Anyone know for sure?

Chrysler 8.25

The Chrysler has the flat area at the bottom and larger 3" axle tubes.

Yay :) Thank you very much for the verification. I found out the 2000 XJs could have either the 8.25 or D35 stock, so I wanted to make sure mine was at least the 8.25.

If you have anti-lock brakes it's a Dana 35. If not you have a fair chance it's a C 8.25.

Also notice the slightly larger gussets where the differential housing meets the axle tubes on the Dana 35.

Ahh yes, I didn't know to look for that. Your comparision picture makes it perfectly clear :) Very nice, thank you. Mine seems to have a crap load of grease / oil on it. Is that normal?

Probably a seeping diff cover seal. Normal? For it's age probably, but eventually the seal should be changed.

the dana also has NO lip on the cover whereas the Chrysler has a lip on the outer edge

Just to add to the info, the 8.25 has some pegs/prongs on the top of the third member toward the front.

I would say all the grease is either from the gasket, or from the rubber plug. All those damn rubber plugs leak a little oil.

You can use a brass 1/2"NPT pipe plug in place of the rubber ones apparently.
