Ok so it's been raining up here in Calgary last couple of days, and first thing I notice is that morts windshield leaks at the top, of course you can't expect window guys to do a good job installing a window into a brand new frame!

So I'm looking for a product that I can pour I to the gap at the top, and it will flow down into the leaky spots then solidify and still be flexable.

Does anyone know of anything I could use? I don't want to install yet another windshield into mort.

I have seen the glass shops use non harding silacone it is shoft and you can pump it in and when it sets up it seal the gap and it fix.

Picked up all four, for the nice low price of 30 bones!!! A little rusty but I think I can make something to polish it off then soak them in oil!

Headed for the deep snow Dana?

Pookapotamus

Not any time soon, but 3 weeks ago there was 2 feet in the mountains, could have really used them!

No matter what anyone says, chains are great in snow and even better on all fours

Anyone have any tricks to clean the rust off of these?

I have been told diesel fuel.

Install them and drive in sand

Pookapotamus
05-25-2014, 09:35 PM
Yes that would work great! But I need to fit them to my tires, they are made for 31's. Need to add some chain and another cross strap.

If you google ... I think, theres a baking soda and vinegar mix .. or something ... that some use ???

Baking soda and vinegar  Makes lots of bubbles anyway :D

Brasscatz

Can always mix up a solution of CLR to soak them in. Shouldn't take too much of the stuff and would work quite well.

Pookapotamus

I grabbed a jug of metal restore rust remover, will see how it works.

Got busy today and started to work on getting the exhaust around all the suspension and out the back.

4.3LXJ
05-30-2014, 09:33 PM
That has always been a priority with me Dana, exhaust all the way to the back. I hate that fresh exhaust smell.

Pookapotamus
05-30-2014, 09:57 PM
It's really tough with coils and a 4 link in the rear, the long range tank takes up a lot of space too. Ya the wife was complaining that mort stinks, so he goes under the knife again.

4.3LXJ
05-30-2014, 10:02 PM
The space problem has been why I haven't done a four link in the classical way. I have a three inch exhaust system that I like that goes all the way to the back in spite of my large tank. I think I have myself talked into a three link rear. Works well on the front so far

Pookapotamus
05-30-2014, 10:23 PM
3" exhaust, I'm only running 2"

4.3LXJ
05-30-2014, 10:25 PM
I have room with tight bends. You might want to consider oval pipe. It is made for use in tight places. Not cheap, but effective

Pookapotamus
05-31-2014, 07:13 AM
I was considering mounting the rear half of the exhaust directly to the jeep so that it can't rattle against the suspension, and having a flex pipe in there somewhere so the engine can still flex. Good idea or not?

That could be done, however the unibody will turn into a giant speaker for any exhaust noise

Pookapotamus
05-31-2014, 08:59 AM
Well I am fairly well insulated back there, it's just easier to mount it with the clearance issues

4.3LXJ
05-31-2014, 09:05 AM
I totally understand. Exhaust is the one drawback of the four link that everyone is silent on.

I won't give up!

4.3LXJ
05-31-2014, 09:10 AM
Just a suggestion, the one place you can put the exhaust you might not have thought of is down the center next to the drive shaft I think. Then once past the tunnel you can go for the side maybe. Also 2.5" oval pipe is only 2" thick

Pookapotamus
05-31-2014, 10:07 AM
I will be running up the tunnel like you suggest, first I'm tackling the fuel pump http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/05/31/hysamahu.jpg

What shit seals! These are more of an oil scrape than a seal! Can't believe these were even in there! Just the top has any rubber, it's almost paper thin! And is very loose on the valve!

Brasscatz
08-08-2014, 11:00 AM
Can you confirm that you're getting fuel? You had the fuel rail out recently, right? Maybe spray starter fluid in the intake and see if it fires.

4.3LXJ

CPS I think. They can fail and not throw a code

Pookapotamus
08-08-2014, 02:10 PM
Very well could be, I carry a spare, just seems weird with the oil issue?

4.3LXJ
08-08-2014, 03:08 PM
The oil issue is probably caused by an unrelated plug in the vents on top of the valve cover. 4.0s are famous for that

Pookapotamus
08-08-2014, 06:07 PM
So I got mort home, via tow truck, ( so humiliating), then noticed a puddle of oil on the floor from last night, apparently he was leaking last night.

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 10:18 AM
Well lots if oil in the intake, did start for a bit, died again, seems to be shooting lots of air out if the Pcv hole

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 10:19 AM
How are the plugs?

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 10:25 AM
A little wet

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 10:27 AM
Now you know why it died. It burped oil into the intake. So, now you need to find out why. Two things to check. The elbows on the valve cover vents and compression

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 11:51 AM
All time high compression of 70 psi!!!

Top two rings are stuck in place, don't move,
Never seen this before!

Now what?

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 05:26 PM
Ok so here is what I think went down...

Valve seals leaked from day 1, which lubricated the rings and kept them free and moving, after fixing the valve seals the rings with oil in them basically cooked in place.

Does this sound feasible? Or am I completely out to lunch?

And if I am right, do I just clean everything up reinstall and I'm good? Or will the rings do this again and I should be ordering new rings? Can I shave the rings down somehow?

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 07:28 PM
I would remove the rings first. The question is if they are still springy or if they have become conformed to the smaller shape. If they have, the question is if they were bad to start with or as you say they became stuck. I have never seen this either except in a Jeep I managed to cook the rings and take the temper out of them

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 07:53 PM
They are still springy, but might be better to just replace.

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 09:40 PM
Yes, they will need to reseat so I would suggest replacing. I suppose your theory about the oil getting cooked to varnish might be correct. I have never seen that before either. What kind of oil are you running in Mort

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 09:44 PM
10w 40 rotella, I believe

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 09:47 PM
Rotella is good oil. The whole thing is kinda fishy. I use Valvoline racing oil. It will take more heat and doesn't leave deposits. Might be a suggestion

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 09:58 PM
The rings might be too thick for the groove they are in, I'm a little hesitant to go with new rings as I don't have the proper tool to grind them for a perfect fit/ seal. Whatever that tool is called.

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 10:03 PM
Yes, there is supposed to be some clearance there. Here is a tool you might be interested in

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 10:07 PM
Yup that would help! Any way I can measure the spring force of the rings?

4.3LXJ
08-09-2014, 10:08 PM
I don't know of any. Basically I think the accepted method is to look at the gap when not assembled

Pookapotamus
08-09-2014, 10:43 PM
That would work! I'll grab a pic tomorrow!

I think that is a good idea

Damn, this ruins the magnetic oil filter experiment. Sorry about the Jeep acting up Pook.

This is just one of the joys if owning a jeep! It was actually a good thing for the oil filter experiment, found out the strip magnet is way too weak, have to revamp the idea.

Also this crosses off the last item on my list that was not done by me, and that was not done properly in the first place. If you're going to do something do it you're self so you know it's done right!

4.3LXJ
08-10-2014, 12:57 PM
Someone else do your engine Dana?

Pookapotamus
08-10-2014, 01:05 PM
Yup, had the block bored and built by a reputable engine builder, looks like rings were not properly installed.

Had the head built by a reputable guy, real shitty seals were used.

Had a windshield installed into morts brand new frame, leaked like a sieve, and could see out side where not enough urethane was applied.

3 things built by others In my whole build, 3 things done wrong! It is so hard to find good quality work!

4.3LXJ
08-10-2014, 01:20 PM
That is so true. I don't know who the engine builder was, but in my book anyone that mass produces rebuilds does less than quality work by using blocks and heads that are marginal and offsetting bores for instance and using the cheapest parts possible. Just my 2 cents

Pookapotamus
08-10-2014, 01:24 PM
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/08/11/y5ynebez.jpg

Bad pic, but it's obvious the engine builder just threw a set of rings in and called it good.

4.3LXJ
08-10-2014, 01:31 PM
Compression rings have to have a gap there so they can expand and contract with changes in heat. I think you better rering the whole thing Dana. How are the bearings?

Pookapotamus
08-10-2014, 01:35 PM
Agreed Steve, it's hard to see in the pic but the gap in the ring is huge! But yet they don't fit all the way into the groove in the piston either, I'm thinking they used stock rings, should be fun tracking down a proper set to be used with a .040 bore.

4.3LXJ
08-10-2014, 01:40 PM
Summit Racing might be your friend there. Generally pretty good stuff

Pookapotamus
08-10-2014, 01:44 PM

4.3LXJ
08-10-2014, 02:50 PM
Just a thought, dangerous I know. Your oil rings aren't big enough I think. That would also make it use oil.

Pookapotamus
08-10-2014, 03:02 PM

4.3LXJ

No parts until the 19th!!!! 😢😢😭😭😭😭

Time to pick up some welding gas and find something else to mod!!!😁

Pookapotamus
09-13-2014, 01:17 PM
So... Working on the pistons this morning I buggered one up, which turned out to be a good thing, did some research and found out the pistons were metric and the rings were imperial. Which means these should have never been paired together in the first place. That's why the side clearance was too tight and why the rings failed. So now I'm ordering new pistons, either Keith black or speed pro don't know which is a better piston

Pookapotamus
09-13-2014, 01:39 PM
And now I find out that I can switch to forged pistons and stock 4.0L rods and go to a long rod stroker for around $700.

What should I do?

bluedragon436
09-13-2014, 01:55 PM
What will that take it too?? And how is that a long rod if it is stock rods?? Or were you meaning 4.2 rods?? I know I've been looking at collating the parts for doing a budget stroker w/ 4.2L rods & crank... I think a budget stroker build would be nice for sure, especially if ou are going to be hitting up new pistons anyways..

Pookapotamus
09-13-2014, 02:16 PM
It's already a short rod stroker, and from what I can tell is the longer rod does not add that much, only seen in dyno, but it is stronger. So I will probably stick with what I have. I'm still researching so don't have all the answers. The 4.2 rods, the ones I have are shorter than the stock 4.0L.

bluedragon436
09-13-2014, 02:30 PM
Oh ok, that makes sense.. I guess I didn't see that you and the 4.2 rods already... Either way I look forward to seeing the pics of the build up of whatever you choose to run...

Pookapotamus
09-13-2014, 02:47 PM
There really is not that much advantage to the long rod stroker, probably end up staying with what I have.

Pistons are at the border ready for pickup!

Can I just press the wrist pins out? Then press the new ones in? Or am I going to have to build an oven to heat them up to press them off/on?

Pookapotamus
09-20-2014, 06:37 PM
Well I picked up all (well most) of my parts last night and got busy in the garage today. First thing I had to build a press to press the wrist pins out. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/20/f2ca0e0c5d824c24802b647fa59254f2.jpg

Then started grinding rings. http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/20/c0c5450002286611ac1b968bde867161.jpg

Great build!
I was looking at your ring in cylinder shot and could not see any cross hatch...
If you are putting in new rings, it is always a good idea to use even a cheep bottle brush hone to throw some cross hatch into the surface. helps seat the rings quicker and greatly improve oil control. Mind you it just might be a bad angle on the bore so it does not show, I will revisit some of the past engine build picks. again, Great job! I want to find a nice rebuildable block and make a fresh motor for my jeep!

Well the new belt works great, I think I lost 20 lbs this new belt is so short, but with only 4 pulleys that's all it needs any more.

Warmed Mort up, getting ready to break in the ring when I noticed a couple of problems, sparks jumping out of the plug boots, and no heat!!!

Back to the drawing board!

Ok, finished buttoning Mort up, aimed his lights, swapped in the new rear coils, flushed the cooling system among a bunch of other little fixes. Then took him for a boot! Much better! A little more low end torque, don't bottom the rear shocks out on speed bumps. Can't wait to take him to work Monday!

Pookapotamus
10-19-2014, 07:52 PM
Well I feel kinda stupid, Mort was throwing a few engine codes, one was an oxygen sensor that I forgot to plug in, and the other was for the emissions solenoid thingy, tried to clear them a few times and they would not clear. Figured great now I get to live with that and try to solve them later.

Woke up this morning and realized that you can't clear codes with the engine running, cleared them and ran around town all day without them coming back.

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 02:22 PM
Ok, had to go do some welding on bribeguy's jeep, took Mort on the highway for the first time, has no power after 3400 rpm, like he is out of air, or fuel not like when he hits the rev limiter. Not sure if it's because of the cheep plug wires I have, possibly floating the valves or what's happening????

Anyone experience this before? Any suggestions???

4.3LXJ
10-25-2014, 02:29 PM
Mudderoy had the same problem after a rebuild. Can you get it back by going to a higher RPM?

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 02:54 PM
Nope, can't power through it.

4.3LXJ
10-25-2014, 04:36 PM
Might check your TPS. If it doesn't read right it could cause this.

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 04:58 PM
I will look into it, it never ends does it!

4.3LXJ
10-25-2014, 05:08 PM
No, that is for sure. I am thinking that if it doesn't show full throttle or near it then the mixture would lean out and not make RPMs. But it is a start

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 05:34 PM
I have another tps, somewhere, will swap it and see. It has to be a fuel and spark issue. Will redline no prob with no load.

Was even thinking maybe cam, or cam timing, I have the extreme 4x4 cam, was wondering if it would limit the valves at high rpm, but that does not really make sense.

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 05:40 PM
Methinks the shitty wires that are leaking might create too much resistance limiting the spark, and now that I have decent compression, I'm blowing out the spark at high rpm.

????

4.3LXJ
10-25-2014, 05:45 PM
Turn off the lights and rev it up. If you see a light show you will know

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 05:47 PM
Don't need to turn off the lights to see the light show! If summit would hurry and ship me my new wires, I could at least rule out spark as a problem

Pookapotamus
10-25-2014, 06:11 PM
Can you put a set of roller lifters on that cam? Does the cam have to be special?

4.3LXJ
10-25-2014, 06:23 PM
Can you put a set of roller lifters on that cam? Does the cam have to be special?

Hmmm, that is a good question. I don't think you can. I do know the flat tappet cam is a little taller on one side to get the lifter to rotate during the lift to avoid uneven wear. I think, but not sure, that the grind if different due to the roller being a point of lift instead of a flat disk.

So you have done this before? :D

Pookapotamus
10-27-2014, 09:15 AM
Many times Steve!

So more info, did not make it to work this morning, got most of the way there and could not get him to rev above 1k even with no load! Shut him down for a min started back up and was able to limp to work.

So I'm sure it's a fuel problem, now recently I deleted the carbon canister, and ran the tank vent directly to the evp solenoid, thought nothing about it, but pulled the gas cap off today and whoosh sucked in lots of air! So now I'm thinking connecting that the way I had it might be crating too much vacuum in the tank and some how compromising my fuel pressure or vapor licking the rail.

Whatcha think???

4.3LXJ
10-27-2014, 10:34 AM
You might be on to something there. Why done you stuff a rag in the filler and take it for a spin and see what happens

Pookapotamus
10-27-2014, 11:40 AM
I unplugged the vacuum line so the tank is vented to air again. Helped but problem is still there. Was thinking fuel filter but it should be fine, there is one in the tank and one out side, last week when I was in the tank everything looked nice and clean.

Just have to see what the drive home brings I guess.

Pookapotamus
10-27-2014, 04:46 PM
well the drive home went ok, still runs like shit above 3400, but now almost wants to power through it, will have to check fuel pressure when i can.

4.3LXJ
10-27-2014, 05:05 PM
Progress then

Pookapotamus
10-27-2014, 05:37 PM
Yup now to decide what to do, new higher pressure pump? Are the filters bad? Did I bugger up my injectors?

Sigh!

4.3LXJ
10-27-2014, 07:36 PM
Dana, the stock pump puts out plenty of pressure, about 60psi I think or close to it. If it is weak, then a stock replacement should do the trick. However, one thing I would look at is total flow. Try taking your fuel line loose at the rail and flow into a can. It should be a nice steady stream

Pookapotamus
10-27-2014, 08:06 PM
I think it was pushing 65 psi when I first got Mort running and tested everything, really the only reason to go aftermarket is because they are cheaper. Probably just Burt it out trying to overcome the vacuum. This pump came out of an old zj might just be old

4.3LXJ
10-27-2014, 08:50 PM
Could be I suppose

Pookapotamus
11-01-2014, 12:57 PM
Well I pulled the pump and gave the filters a cleaning, and Mort has all his power back. Filters looked nice and clean, but I thing the pump was bottoming out in the tank and limiting suction. No idea but at least he is drive-able again.

4.3LXJ
11-01-2014, 01:53 PM
Hmmmmm. I may need to pull mine too. Not sure where that pump sits in my aftermarket tank. I am thinking it sits too high

Pookapotamus
11-01-2014, 04:54 PM
What style of pump Steve? Mine is from a zj, has the 8" screw on ring and a spring loaded base.

4.3LXJ
11-01-2014, 06:04 PM
I am not really sure. The tank was made here in Chico and came with the sending unit and fuel pump. I got it out of the pick and pull for $45, the price of the sending unit because they had punctured the tank. It is made of heavy steel so I just welded it up and was good to go. But I am not sure it is a stock sending unit. I think it is an aftermarket. No O ring needed with it. It has its own gasket incorporated with it

So I finally took the time to go through all my receipts from building Mort to see exactly what he cost me. I know I am missing a few things here and there but I think this is fairly accurate.

Parts: $32,200
Consumables: $2,200
shipping and labor: $700

This does not include my labor or the tools that I bought to complete Mort, I do know I spent roughly $4,600 on tools but have no idea what labor I put into Mort.

And of course Mort is not yet finished, Doubt he ever will be!

Just Empty Every Pocket!!!

Glad she liked it! Good luck getting more parts approved! Tell her I'll send more pics if she lets you buy the odd thing! 😉

Unfortunately on my wheeling trip sat, at the first obstacle, I slipped and sprained my ankle badly, folded my left foot under me heard a loud snap! Can barely push the clutch in, looks like I get demoted to driving the chev pick up for a while! 😢

Yes and no Steve, I had a girl ask me what I could do to give her jeep some attitude, came up with this.
